It was Josh Green who was pushing to open up and didn’t see a problem with just doing random 2nd test instead of requiring a second test as all the mayor’s wanted.
Thanks for the updates. We are planning a trip to Hawaii on December 30 from WIsconsin. I do hope they change the 72 hour window. That time frame is impossible for us to get a test back from Walgreens. We are not able to rest with any of the other mandatory testers due to our location. I’m on my third HI trip since Safe Travels started, and it’s been fun to keep up with the rules as they change on the islands. I have to give credit to Alaska Airlines for their rapid testing pop-up partnerships in west coast gateway cities. They’ve kept their website info up to date and have been very accommodating if travel changes are needed. They’ve made it significantly less tedious.
I’ve taken voluntary post-arrival tests each time just in case.
The politicians are just using this for their own benefit. This is not the way to bring tourist back to the islands. This is really complicated and tourists have other options to travel to like Aruba, Cancun, Costa Rica. They actually hurting the economy more with these unnecessary changes.
Another words…don’t come here. We don’t know what we’re doing but we are dragging our feet until world govt takes over. Oh and please come for a relaxing vacation in prison. And we need Fed Govt money because the virus did it to us
Thank you so much for your thorough reporting. It really puts a lot of doubt and fear in me regarding the governments ability to effectively and safely govern. The fact that we still can fly having tested and following all the safe travel to hawaii guidelines, yet sit a few feet away from someone who did not test, is crazy to me. I understand that there are federal guidelines, however what I don’t understand is why an airline can’t make up their own rules. For example no shoes no shirt no service, why can’t one airline or to require testing and proof of a negative test in order to board the plane? Think of how much relieved that would give to passengers flying over. And then if for some reason they don’t have their test results, because of processing times, then they quarantine until they can prove their negative result. The fact that our government is allowing different counties to do different things is so disappointing. My vote as such will be with Josh Greene who seems to be the only one who is thinking clearly and logically, keeping in mind what’s good for the people, not his own political agenda.

Thank you. This isn’t about federal government guidelines. It is solely within the purview of the federal government to require testing for flights. We aren’t experts, but that much is definite. The airlines can’t do that.

This is such a smart idea! I love how protective they are of their people. I think this is making people feel much more safe about flying to Hawaii because all you have to do I get a COVID test, and they’ve made it easy if you do forget. I’m in my 20’s and likely would be largely asymptomatic, but I’m afraid to get COVID since it can cause residual lung damage or latent effects (like teeth falling out!). I’m so impressed with Hawaii’s response to COVID

Extended lung problems is rare of your an average healthy person. As far as teeth falling out … that hasn’t been proven at all. That’s just another scare tactic by our very dishonest media, Covid is extremely hyped up. We know so much more about Covid now and currently, there are so many treatments that we didn’t have 8 months ago. It’s the flu! relax a bit and don’t be fearful.

Where are you getting this information from? here’s what I know:
1. Today (Thurs) alone there were over 100K hospitalizations for COVID.
2. Also today about 2875 people died from COVID. That’s about 2 per minute
3. Our hospitals are beginning to be strained to their limits. The problem isn’t so much beds, but enough staff.
This doesn’t sound like the “flu” to me … and we need to take it seriously.
I agree. It is mostly political driven. They should have never shut down inter island travel. It would have help the economy. Stop playing with such much change and confusion. We are the laughingstock of the country.

I grew up on Maui. My family is still there. I live in Oregon. You know what I miss most about the islands? People don’t just think about Money, and they don’t automatically act like spoiled brats if they can’t get their way. It’s not Hawaii’s fault that the mainland cant get organized enough to follow basic safety protocols. Other countries were Strict, like New Zealand and South Korea. They effectively stopped the threat. If I can’t see my mom this year and get a break from all this mainland fighting, I will be heartbroken. But I will get over it. Why be so Selfish?

Some states don’t have the covid19 NAAT testing, so what do we do??? We can get a covid 19 test but not the-NAAT TEST. Plus the 72hr.pre travel to short
Me and my extended family (total of 7) just visited Hawaii last week. We used Vault which is one of the approved tests by Hawaii. It’s a mail in service. You order the test, conduct the test via Zoom, mail it back and you have your results within 24 hours of Vault receiving the test. It gets mailed back UPS. All the postage is included in the cost of the price. We did our tests on a Wednesday morning and took to UPS as soon as we were done. We all had results by Friday morning. Worked like a charm. I would highly recommend them.
By the way … mark the inside and outside package “STAT HAWAII”. Vault told 6 of us to do that but forgot to tell one person. We already knew and marked it. Vault says that they pull the Hawaii tests out and they get priority. Just remember not to test more than 72 hours prior to the time your flight takes off.
I am encouraged to hear about your good Vault Health home saliva test experience. I will be Vault testing via a Zoom video observation from the remote part of southern Oregon on the morning of Monday, December 7, hoping to receive my good (negative) results before my Thursday, December 10 departure from Sacramento, California (400 miles away). I will be certain to mark my samples with “Stat Hawaii” to get my test results back quickly – thank you for the tip!
Unless you have family, a condo or home in Hawaii I would advise not coming to the Islands for a vacation until we have a vaccine.
I don’t understand why they don’t handle the documented negative test result like a passport. If you are flying to, say, Europe, if you don’t have your passport you can’t get on the airplane. It should be the same with the COVID Test: if you don’t have the negative test result and the Safe Travels paperwork in hand you can’t board the plane.
The 96 hour rule is much more practical. The test only shows that you were COVID free when you took the test, nothing more. They need to have an instant test prior to boarding the aircraft. Clearly there are logistic issues here, but the probability of landing on the island with COVID is significantly reduced.
We fly to Kaua’i in March. We fly from MSP to SEA and then to Kaua’i the next day. Right now our plan is take the COVID test at SEA after arrival. We also plan to take the optional post-arrival test on Kaua’i. I estimate that it will cost us an additional $700 for the testing. I really hope there will be more reliable instant testing before then.
If we are really lucky, we are in the over 65 category, we will be vaccinated by March.
Let’s hope getting the vaccine will not make a positive test result. False positive!
One of the biggest issues for the past few weeks is the “Testing Partners” completing the tests have been overwhelmed by those needing tests in the 72 hour timeframe. CVS recently pulled out of the program making 1 less provider. Many of those arriving in Hawaii without results is because the results weren’t received in time, not that they didn’t test. Changing to the 96 hour testing requirements is to help the providers & travelers not get jammed up into a Covid Hotel.

I went to the mainland over Thanksgiving to take my oldest daughter to visit colleges in Southern California. Retested Friday morning at 10 AM at a CVS in Fontana California, and got her results back by 10 PM on Saturday. Just in time for our 3:00 PM departure from LAX. We used CVS, booked the appointment online, showed up at our appointment time, and myself, both my daughters and myself all had success and are back to normal lives here in Maui. That being said, I don’t believe CVS has pulled out. Where did you see otherwise?

As a former resident of Hawaii and a travel agent who loves to come home as much as possible, I simply have no desire to return to my home at this time. What a convoluted mess. No one can safely book Hawaii and be assured that they will actually get to go. I traveled to Tahiti this summer when they opened up and they are the most efficient. It’s very simple. No negative Covid test? no get on the plane. Retesting four days after arrival. They welcome visitors with open arms and have had very few new cases…The only visitor who brought it was able to be isolated. Their testing system is working. Traveled to Alaska two months ago. More Covid testing. Other places are doing it. Hawaii has seemed to take the stance of keep everybody out. It’s not that difficult. It requires diligence and commitment to testing and follow up testing. I guess it’s easier to do nothing. In the meantime your new cases are coming from your own residents and the economy is choking people literally to death. I am 100% for always wearing a mask when you’re around other people and socially distancing. It’s not a perfect solution but neither is just shutting the door and keeping everybody away. Somehow I suspect that even when they get a vaccine Hawaii will not except proof of vaccination. It seems to be there is something more going on here.
Don’t bother making plans to Hawaii. You will not get in. after a month of planning. And taking the test.(Vault $120) Which ended up not showing up on time as I planned for the 72-hour departure time period. This is an almost impossible goal. Put your energy elsewhere. Tourist industry will continue to suffer.
Bryan, I’m curious how long it took for you to get your Vault test results? My husband and I are taking it tomorrow with the hopes of getting our results in time to fly to Hawaii on Saturday. We are also taking one at Walgreens. Our fingers are crossed we get one of them back in time.

Doing one test for travel when the country is facing a shortage of testing is one thing.Taking two, is down right insulting to people who might have been exposed for virus at no fault of their own and may have trouble locating a test because of your selfish need to travel during a pandemic and not have to quarantine.
I’m not telling you not to travel, not telling not to test but telling you to think about the larger community around you in this county and world. I’ve seen many comments on BOH from people voicing their opinions about the rights/wrongs of people traveling to Hawaii, but since you have directed your opinions at me, I feel the need to let you know my situation. My husband and I are not traveling to Hawaii for a vacation, to lay on the beach for a week and do nothing but relax. My son is serving his country (as well as yours!) and is stationed in Honolulu. We have not seen him or our grandchildren in almost a year. My son is out to sea for months at a time and this trip was planned and airline tickets purchased over 6 months ago. We are simply trying to take advantage of a small window of time before he goes back out to sea to see them. Thanks to BOH for the helpful information.

We are scheduled to go to Maui in January after having to cancel a September 2020 trip.
Give us one reasonable standard, not multiple tests at multiple prices. Tell your testing partners they will deliver results on time or they will not be paid.
Having a 96 hr window for results is reasonable and gives testing partners some breathing room. Anything more restricted will kill Hawaii.
Remember we turists are your economic life blood. We want to come to paradise and we will wear masks and social distance. Any one not following those reasonable rules should be deported at their own expense.
Everyone needs to bE reasonable to save Hawaii.

The mental health effects are horrible on the young people who are being forced to lockdown even though they have almost zero risk of dying from Covid. The CDC reported in June that over 25% of 18-24 year olds have considered suicide. Protect the vulnerable over 70 and let those at minimal risk live their lives. Young people are being sacrificed and it is wrong. Question government employees that are still collecting full pay and benefits.
Please, tell that to my sister who is 27, in amazing shape, perfect health and is still sick and struggling with symptoms after testing positive over two months ago. She and thousands like her would disagree with your “young people are being sacrificed” nonsense. This virus doesn’t discriminate on anything. There is no other way to protect EVERYONE ON KAUAI, young, old, and everything in between! The CDC also tells you how you can slow the spread: Wear a mask, don’t travel or gather, wash your hands…………

I suggest you read the Civil Beat article dated May 15,2020, “Suicides of 4 young men in a week raise alarm on Kauai.” The article details four young men in Kauai who all died from hanging within 7 days in May 2020. For perspective, Kauai has had only 1 death from Covid. The lockdowns and quarantine cause despair and economic destruction that will kill many people for years to come. Wearing a mask, washing your hands and social distancing do nothing to address the terrible tragedies caused by the government ordered lockdowns.

Oh boy do I agree with everything you said! I read the Civil Beat article you’re referring to along with many others on the mainland. Yes … those that are comprised either by age or health issues probably need to practice greater protection against Covid. However, the rest must be allowed to live life! I personally had Covid in October along with my spouse. We were mostly tired with only a low grade fever and headache for only 1 day. After that we were tired but that was it! We’ve had many friends that tested positive and have had little or even no symptoms. We are in the 60 year old we bracket. Yes we’re healthy, but that’s why we didn’t stay home. We still work and choose to live life. People are really more afraid of this virus than they should be. The mortality rate is very low. Yes this virus can be very serious but so can the annual flu. The mental repercussions of forced quarantine is just as serious as the virus. People are committing suicide, children are being abused, drug use and overdose has doubled during forced home quarantine. Those that want to stay home have every right to do so. But those of us that choose to live our life also have that right. Government overreach is running rampant! If we had people in our government that had a backbone they would stop the controlling Governors from doing this. Truly government overreach! People have lost jobs, businesses, homes and even their lives over this! It’s time to stop!

In a future article, please tell us why Covid related public policy in Hawaii is not actively being debated in our State Legislature (and please don’t say ‘because the legislature is not in session’). Legislators write the laws, and administrative rules, which reinforce the laws they’ve passed. And the legislators are accountable to the public who votes them into their privileged offices. Under the current ‘Executive Orders – till Tier 4’, Executives are making all Decisions . . . who are the Executives accountable to – globalist, elitist, deep state corruption (hint: billion- dollar-a-mile Rail)? Honestly, we want to know; let’s be transparent (and blunt) about it so we can get on with our futures, families, and communities. It’s high time for an adult conversation about the elephant in the room who seems to be bargaining with the keys to paradise.

Anyone that is willing to submit to imprisonment at the Timber’s Resort for a paltry $874.00 per night and monitored with an ankle bracelet like a criminal must be insane! Personally, I can’t imagine there will be too many takers. Kauai is amazingly beautiful but I would rather stay at a motel 6 in the middle of a homeless encampment than pay to wear an ankle bracelet in Kauai.
This whole mess just continues to gets worse and worse. Even after this most recent bazaar requirement is lifted, visitors will not trust Kauai enough to chance spending money to visit this island. I guess the Mayor of Kauai won’t quit until the economy of this beautiful island is completely decimated.
Covid is 99 to 99.5% survivable. The flu kills thousands every year. I understand that it’s more contagious than the normal flu, but it’s extremely survivable. I know because I had it in October. For us, it was nothing more than a one day headache and a 100.5 fever for 24 hours. After that the only sign was fatigue. We have had influenza that was 20 times worse than Covid. Again, I’m not making light of it but the majority do very well at home. The fake news doesn’t any longer report the fatality rate of Covid and when they do they include the deaths from the time it first hit the U. S. We are over 60 so it’s not like we are in the extremely young age group. If anyone reading this post happens to get it please don’t panic. Odds are that you will be just fine and no hospitalization.

I totally agree with a 96 HR pre-travel timing for test results to be completed. Some of your required labs takes up to 5 days to come back.
And why make the people pay for the post travel test.????
The economy and our pockets are pretty much depleted of funds to throw away.

My family and I recently visited Maui. While stressful, the covid testing was actually easy. I never once saw a politician during the process. The only problem we encountered was on the island with the locals. Many locals still refuse to wear a mask and we witnessed numerous large gatherings of locals at the beaches.
It’s funny really. Many locals don’t want to wear masks, don’t want to go to work, and don’t want tourists. But want tourist money.

Yes, you can, by getting federal and state money for unemployment, which pays better than working in may cases. Another 6 months of government cheese, please!
Doesn’t help business owners, although the owners who got in on the CARES act money at least have that. It also won’t help landlords, because once you’ve quit paying rent for 8-9 months, why bother to start back up, especially sine you can’t be evicted, and ultimately government will bail you out, just like the people who quit paying mortgages back in 2008-09. Hawaii did pump $50M of CARES money into landlords by directly paying rent for up to three months for a lot of people. But, that was in the past.
Regarding your (and other commenters’) preoccupation about “locals” not wearing masks, I am confident they would tell you to go home (less nicely than how I just said it). This is an insular place on many levels, and many feel the only reason they have to be burdened with sweaty face diapers that immediately become wet and useless as any sort of filter is to please tourists. And Mayor Anger Management (I’m going to steal that) just confirmed to the entire island of Kauai that stopping the 14 day healthy quarantine caused the virus to come back to the island. Not everyone is happy about the shut down, but a lot of people are just fine with it. I’d say pretty much everyone not dependent on tourists is very happy to not have them. Lots of old, sacred, financially comfortable people around here.
I have to admit, the part of me that drives the roads and walks/jogs on the beach are looking forward to having Kauai clear back out over the next week or two. We all can be selfish.
All of this means there’s no chance on earth I’m coming. Arizona is sounding pretty good right now for this winter!
One thing to look into is I live on Maui but work on Lanai so as it is now I have to take a test on Maui then same day take a test on Lanai to return after 72 hours of work. I work 3 days on Lanai. Out of my own pocket 150 per test. It makes no sence if it takes 14 days for justation of the virus. SO give free tests to those who have jobs. Im also masked up with a shield and stay inside a room for 3 days and dont go out on the town. Look into a solution, 1200. dollars a month and 16 covid tests later thats too much.
Wow, Molly, that is absolutely the most ridiculous story I have heard. I feel for you. Are you an “essential worker”… someone deemed necessary to work during this pandemic? If so, you should be able to qualify for the travel exemption.
Why would a second test be necessary? If you want all those tests, then Hawaii should pay for them.

Just cancelled a highly anticipated vacation to Kauai with my wife for her 55th birthday in January. Disappointed at the over reaction to this virus, that we have gotten over with a few sniffles (both in our 50s). Keep your 75 to 100 year old and immuno-compromised Hawaiian residents quarantined and let the rest of us live our lives and help your economy that will now continue to be decimated leading to homelessness and poverty in the months and years to come!
I absolutely agree! Let people make their own decisions. If they choose to stay home that is certainly their right. But, if we decide to live life as we chose then that is also our right.

Mark, great points and factual representation of the Covid Pandemic. Major overreaction by politicians and frightened liberals. The number of deaths are exaggerated and inflated. I live in So Cal and if anyone dies in a car accident, parachute malfunction or drowning, but had the virus, cause of death is “CV-19.” Ridiculous! You won’t change the minds of liberals or native Hawaiians, they want the Hawaiian economy to suffer and thus receive welfare for the next twenty years.
We have followed a similar plan successfully in Ketchikan Alaska. A negative test preflight, a 2nd test upon arrival at the airport, or within 7-10 days of arrival, during which time, you limit your activity & socially distance. It’s somewhat of a bet but got great cancellation policies and an amazing rate on both the condo and airfare….so hoping this will get a little easier to manage before then! I have only been to Hawai’i 7 times and am heartbroken to cancel my trip at the end of January 2021. The clincher for me was a 30 minute video I watched a week or two ago by a young Hawaiian on the Big Island, Joshua Lanakila Mangauil, and he illustrates many of the inequalities facing Hawaiians and locals vs. tourism. He made several important points on his rant on Facebook November 21st, but the most compelling was when he talked about how there used to be millions of Hawaiians in the islands until they were drastically reduced in numbers by invaders/explorers/colonizers/missionary types, whatever you want to call us mostly white people, who brought disease and epidemics. And now in 2020, it’s the same thing, we are bringing a pandemic to the islands. I will not go back until it is safe for Hawaiians. Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders are more susceptible to the virus than we are. What more convincing argument to stay home? If you love Hawai’i, your conscience should tell you that it’s totally irresponsible to travel during a pandemic…. Travel is how we got here in the first place (pandemic wise). Stay safe.

There were 683,000 Native Hawaiians on the island in 1778, when British explorer Capt. James Cook arrived. That’s on the higher range of the highly disputed historical estimates. Whenever an area is exposed to a population with different bacterial and viral loads, then transmission goes unchecked until herd immunity develops. It is exactly why the COVID-19 virus from China is running thru the USA, while Asia has decreasing infection rates. That is the science. Don’t fall for internet lies, politicians with agendas, or fear mongers. Get COVID and recover, or isolate until vaccine is available. Wash your hands and wear your mask.

We had our test but the homeless is awful instead of fighting each other why not find a way to help the homeless. As female it did not feel safe to out at night due to all the homeless men. It was pretty there and the hotel was great and close to the beach There was homeless everywhere so you couldn’t enjoy it and money you spend to get there and the money you spend while there. This is really sad
Your smarter than most tourists I saw. I was in Maui a couple of weeks ago. Homeless people using and selling drugs and “anything else I wanted” right on the sidewalk in front of the police, and my wife, and 11 yr old daughter. In my youth I never gave it a second thought. But now, with a wife and daughter, I don’t recommend going out after dark in Hawaii. Unless it’s to a well lit and well policed area. Good luck finding that on Maui. Thanks to Maui, my 11 yr old daughter now has a better understanding of prostitutes, drug dealers, drug use, and the homeless. Beautiful sunrise on Haleakala, though.
