  1. We are planning a trip to Maui in June and we would like to take our Granddaughter with us. As of now what are the requirements for kids. She is 14 years old.

    Thank You

  2. Is it true that FEMA healthcare workers, including doctors and nurses, are not required to be vaccinated but Hawaii has dismissed (fired?) all Hawaiian healthcare workers who did not follow The Mandate to get vaccinated? If yes,how do residents feel about having all their professional medical healthcare Hawaiian residents being dropped out of work but allowing Federal FEMA employees, vaxed & non-vaxed to take over the already limited island’s employment and have no Mandate on them?

    5
    1. This literally makes no sense since it’s federally required for federal employees to be vaccinated. One simple Google search proved you wrong. Stop spreading lies.

      4
        1. No, they’re doing the classic “just asking questions” tactic to get away with putting misinformation out there. And how is asking questions in a comment section of a blog better than Google? Google is a tool not a source of information. Learn proper search utility and a wealth of accurate information is at your fingertips.

  3. Hi Rob and Jeff. When is this new mandate on having a booster going into effect? And if a person doesn’t have the booster shot, is the 72 hour covid negative test then the step to take in order to fly to Kauai?y friend is traveling March 2-9 and I am asking for her. Mahalo.

  4. In the past couple of days the MSM, CDC and St. Anthony have all finally acknowledged what many have known for quite some time based on studies and observations around the world- the latest variant is far less dangerous than its predecessors. This house of cards is ready to fall.

So why are our always-behind-the-curve authorities raising the ante now by requiring yet another shot to go about life?

Thanks again BOH for the best updates anywhere.

    1. I’m afraid that you might be claiming victory in the grasp of defeat. Those same virologists and epidemiologists that you cite warn that just because a virus mutates, spreads more easily with milder cases, doesn’t mean that it simply fades away. Though we don’t know how future variants may mutate, there’s a reason scientists call this a “novel” coronavirus. Millions hospitalized and 800,000 of our brothers and sisters dead makes assumptions about the future is a fool’s game.

  5. Aloha Jeff and Rob, Mahalo for keeping us informed! 🙂

Some posters talk about boycotting Hawaii due to the vaccination requirements. Why? No vax + no booster= No entry. Perhaps with an exception to those who carry a valid HI DL or ID-OK with the test. If you own a second home in the islands, you know as I do, that their medical system is nothing compared to the Mainland. If you love Hawaii, get vaxxed & support their economy. We’re booked for April, May, Sept, and Dec. 2022. See you soon!

  6. Dear BoH,I still don’t understand why all arrivals are’nt required to test negative 72 hours prior to departure vaccinated or not! Thank you

    2
    1. Hi Scott.

It is complicated. Our understanding is that the state did not feel it could require testing at this time.

      Aloha.

      2
      1. They require vaccines why not testing??? The vaccine is obviously not preventing covid in Hawaii, not complicated…test them all!

        5
  7. Dear Governor:

Are you crazy? Don’t you see what’s happening with Omicron and the vaccination status of recent Covid cases? 75% are vaccinated with booster yet we still get Covid. It doesn’t seem to be working. Why are you doubling down? Is this politics?

    23
    1. The vaccination and booster shots have never guaranteed you won’t get COVID, but the severity of your illness may be less, and you could be kept out of the hospital if you get a vaccine.

      7
  8. I’m sorry the rules keep changing and I can’t keep up. Can someone please tell me if you are triple vaxed do you have to get a negative Covid test to travel from Florida to Maui? Do you have to be tested to return? I know this question must be asked a million times but I appreciate any guidance. Thanks

    1
    1. Hi Michelle.

The requirement is either testing or vaccination, not both. Nothing should be required in the opposite direction.

      Aloha.

    2. My question is why would anyone want to travel from Florida to Maui!! In Flordia you are free and not restricted to all these crazy non effective rules and mandates. I had a trip planned from Arizona to Maui next week but canceled. It’s clear to me they we aren’t wanted in Hawaii.

      15
      1. Aloha! I have spent a lot of time in Kauai since covid presented itself in 2020. Everyone worked together to stay safe and it was working. If people chose not to comply with the state of Hawaii’s rules they should definitely take their business to a state like Florida. States rights!

        6
      2. LOL no its clear that this island is a spec in the middle of the pacific ocean 3000 miles away from the nearest land with another hospital. Good I am glad you are not going. Funny how we have become such an entitled society. There have always been rules to follow. Dont like the rules dont go! It is clear they do want us in hawaii they just want us to do the right thing and be vaccinated. I will take your trip to Maui and gladly follow ANY and all rules.

        1
  9. Thanks again BOH.

I have to get 21 people. Most have never traveled and, even though they may be delayed upon arrival, I’d rather be able to have them bypass Safe Travels if they don’t want to deal with it.

    That’s ok, right?

    Mahalo,
    Rod

    1
    1. Hi Rod.

The state’s website says for example, “The negative test result must be uploaded onto Safe Travels or printed out prior to departure and hard copy in hand when arriving in Hawaii.”

So it appears exemption proof can just be presented on arrival. Do check the state website or contact their help desk if needed be. https://hawaiicovid19.com/travel/.

Should anything go wrong doing it this way however it would result in a quarantine mess.

      Aloha.

  10. The Honorable Governor Ige:

“You can bail water 24/7, and no matter how good you are at not sinking, you still have a hole in your boat.”
― Kelli Jae Baeli, Crossing Paths

    Thank you.

    11
    1. And as on who obviously doesn’t believe in the Gov. putting safety and his residents paramount in his decisions:

“To argue with a person who has renounced the use of reason is like administering medicine to the dead” – Thomas Paine

      4
      1. I certainly make no comment regarding whether Governor Ige puts the safety of his residents in his decisions or not. I assume he does.

I merely point out that his decisions, whether they put safety and his residents as paramount or otherwise, do not appear to be working out very well.
As we write, COVID remains uncontrolled. Boosters are not proving to assist in the effort.

But in that he is a politician, I fully understand the imperative he be viewed as solving the problem.

        5
        1. That is not the message in the rest of the world. I live in Canada. We listen to US coverage of the pandemic and are appalled at what the American public is being told. There is a reason you have the highest case and death rate. It is because politics and public health issues are confused. How is wearing a mask a political issue? Are wearing pants in public a political issue? Is wearing a seat belt? No just common sense. Your anecdotal evidence doesn’t invalidate the science no matter how much

          6
          1. Good Day PETER W

I think some of the answer to your post lies with that despite what the media may convey, Americans at the grassroots level still have a bit of independence in their spirit. Deep down many of us chaff a tad being mandated to do anything. Even science, and especially the conflicting science of COVID, must bend to this.

Experience tells us the quickest way to dissuade a free man from doing something is to demand he do it. Sadly, our politicians seemingly forgot this.

            9
          2. Peter could have also mentioned the requirements for all U.S. citizens during WW II when we had a very visible enemy. Americans were asked to conserve, to grow their own vegetables, to restrain from using metals vital to the war effort, and on the west coast to black cloth their windows at night to prevent enemy targeting.

In this battle with a microscopic enemy too much to follow basic public health advice. Indeed the country has morphed from the Greatest Generation to the Whining Generation

            2
          3. That is true HAYWARD, that independent streak can be a good thing or it can also be a willingness to “cut of your nose to spite your face”. I’m guessing America’s ‘greatest generations would not have politicized this the way we have. Of course they didn’t have the Internet to spread misinformation so who knows?

            4
          4. Good Day JOHNW

            Yes indeed.

A true sword has two sharp edges. One faces the foe; the other faces oneself.

As to the greatest generation’s response? I cannot say with certainty. But I do know well the nature my parents and their peers who were of that generation. From that knowledge I believe they would be appalled by the actions of our government and certain members of our citizenry as regards Covid. I recall them more akin a pride of lions than a herd of sheep.

            2
          5. HEYWARD, It’s an interesting speculation as to what the Greatest Generation would have done with the Internet. There probably would have been Facebook pages saying Pearl Harbor was staged!…. to your point about sheep, there’s always going to be people following some conspiracy theorists…as we have seen.

            1
        2. Well you’re right HeyWard, more people should be getting boosted…sad how misinformation and political theater has tossed a roadblock on that… but the simple fact that Hawaii has had so many fewer deaths per capita then other states pretty much proves that Hawaii’s policies saved a lot of lives. Dying or losing a loved one is a big deal. It’s really all that counts.

          2
          1. The states that had the highest death rates had the highest levels of unvaccinated and elderly. Add to that the fact that winter weather drives everyone indoors to spread/share their germs and you can understand why places with temperate or tropical climates do better. It has very little to do with Hawaii’s policies and more to do with luck and good weather.

      2. Fair amount of misinformation and conjecture here about the vaccination’s. The hospitalizations are being particularly misrepresented. The vast majority of serious COVID cases are unvaxxed. The vaxxed in the hospitals are often there for other reasons and have tested positive. The very rare vaxxed death has other contributing factors. By and large vaxxed cases are way less serious then unvaxxed cases. No frontline medical worker (hero) will dispute any of this.

        6
  11. “Double vaxxed and boosted”… I’m double vaxxed -but not due for my booster till March (6 months after last vax). I’m assuming I don’t need a booster to travel to the islands before my booster is due? Or has Omicron changed all that… ? Thanks for clarifying.

    3
  12. OMG the sky is falling! I was working on Oahu as a travel nurse when the initial Covid wave hit. I have also worked in Ketchikan (also an island)…only 1 critical access hospital on the whole island (4 ICU beds). At least Hawaii has access to many hospitals within a 30-45 minute flight. I also just got off a cruise that visited 4 island nations whose leaders have more sense than Ige. Now, I am scheduled to fly into Kona on the 23 to begin working at KCH. Looks like I won’t be vaxed in time.

    9
  13. The vaccines are junk, most everyone I know who’s sick with covid are double vac’d or vac’d with a booster. Some vac’d are very sick like they’ve never been vac’d where others I know who are not vac’d have no symptoms at all.

The government is so heavily invested in protecting big pharma that they cannot come out and tell us the truth or big pharma would go bankrupt.

Requiring a booster is just another ploy to get federal dollars and another attempt to limit travel to the islands.

    32
    1. The vaccines were never made to stop you getting sick. They were made to reduce the risk of being hospitalized or dying. How this is not known to some after 2 years is beyond me.

      5
      1. Peter W. That’s absolutely not true. There are many, many clips of Biden, the CDC director and Kamala stating, “The vaccine WILL protect you from getting the virus”. It only changed after so many vaccinated people were getting sick. There is also nothing proving the vaccinated have reduced symptoms. So far, everyone I know who’s been vaccinated who caught the virus have said they have never been so sick. On the flip side, those I know who aren’t vaccinated have all said it’s mild.

        19
        1. Kimberly, I’m surprised to read your entry, as my experience has been the exact opposite of yours. Every single person I know who’s been vaccinated has not gotten the virus (including me). The only friends I know who caught Covid were unvaxxed. Thankfully, all have pulled through it. Many of them now say they wish they had gotten the vaccine.

          6
          1. Exactly my experience too Trasea and many others. Simple fact is the vast majority of deaths now are unvaccinated, the few vaccinated that are being hospitalized are experiencing shorter stays in the hospital and generally not advancing to the ICU.
The vaccines work very well at reducing the severity of Covid. Somehow people have taken the few severe breakthrough cases that are severe and tried to say they are the norm. It’s simply not true.

            7
          2. Over the Christmas Holiday my Daughter and Son in-law both double vac’d both caught covid. She was very ill he had no symptoms.

Nurse customer of ours was in yesterday her favorite uncle passed two weeks ago with covid. He was double vac’d with booster, but was over weight, diabetic, smoker fighting cancel.

So what really killed him was his lifestyle covid just pushed him over the edge.

            5
          3. That’s absolutely not true Trasea. Those stories that hospitals are filled with unvaxxed Covid patients are exactly that: STORIES. Finally the CDC published the truth about who is getting sick: everyone.

            4
          4. MJ, what I stated above was my experience, and yes, it is absolutely true. Everyone I know that’s been vaxed, has not gotten Covid. (I also know some unvaxed who’ve not gotten Covid.) But all those I know who got Covid, were not vaxed! Every single one. Sorry if that disrupts your paradigm.

        2. Kimberly with all due respect No one has ever said you CANNOT get the virus if you get vaccinated. Not one. Funny part about Fox news? 100% compliance with their mandatory vaccination to work.
There is absolutely tons of proof that those vaccinated who have gotten a break thru infection are not dying nor suffering terrible sickness. Again follow real science.

          3
          1. BTW Supreme Court just ruled against employers requiring Covid vaccination in order to work, except for healthcare workers. That sends a clear message about overreach. The pyramid is starting to fall…

            7
      2. Probably because of the following statement by the President on national television:

“If you’re vaccinated, you’re not going to be hospitalized, you’re not going to be in an ICU unit, and you are not going to die.

the various shots that people are getting now cover that. You’re OK. You’re not going to — you’re not going to get COVID if you have these vaccinations.”

        – CNN Town Hall, July 21, 2021.

        12
        1. see the context
          Context
During the same public appearance, Biden also stated, accurately, that vaccinated people are less likely to catch the virus than unvaccinated people and, if they do catch it, are less likely to get sick.

          1
  14. The vax does nothing to stop omicron. Nothing. In fact after a couple weeks it has negative efficacy. So how is forcing a third shot going to help with hospital overcrowding? It won’t. If they would allow early therapeutics that have been proven it would be a big help. And in any case hospitalizations are way down with omicron.

    37
    1. Carl
That’s because COVID patients only go when the hospital is the last resort. By then it’s too late. My brother runs a large respiratory therapy department at a major California hospital verifies this. Those who come in early are treated with those other options

      8
  15. Hi,

    It’s getting confusing.

So, I have to send a (civilian) crew to Oahu next month to do a service on the military bases there.

Do they have to be vaccinated? Or is there some kind of test that can be done instead?
We can deal with any quarantines.

    Thank you,
    Rod

    1
      1. Thank you BOH.

I should have asked – Is going through the Portal required or can they just show up at the airport, with Vac card or timely PCR?

        Thank you,
        Rod

        1
        1. Hi Rod.

By all means, do the state’s Hawaii Safe Travels website, and upload your documents. You’ll save yourself a lot of trouble and may even find a Pre-Clear bracelet from the airline to let you skip the lines on arrival.

          2
    1. You run a business and you don’t know the answers to this? I am going to guess that on base your going to have to go thru strict testing daily if not vaccinated. Here is not the place you should be asking this question

  16. Our family is triple unvaxxed. We will be traveling to another state that isn’t misguided. Sad to see what has happened to Hawaii – maybe people will vote the “right” way with this next election.

    37
    1. Know what lady? I deleted most of my comment. Please do stay away from Hawaii. You do realize it’s a spec in the middle of the ocean 3000 miles away from the next closest hospitals? You are sadly the misguided one. It will catch up to you at some point so I hope you change your un triple vaccinated mind and do the right thing

      15
      1. What that means to me JW is the tourists that lean to self righteous fingerpointing may be staying away. That’s a good thing. I don’t think anyone here has a problem with a larger percentage of respectful understanding tourists coming here and the angry complainers going elsewhere. Most of Hawaii doesn’t want a reboot of last summer. Hawaii is still the land of Aloha, if you know how to find it.

        8
    2. Jennifer. if you feel that way you probably wouldn’t enjoy Hawaii anyway. If you knew the historical significance of being proud about not being vaccinated and coming to Hawaii perhaps you would feel different. Hawaii is still a wonderful place for the folks who respect us enough to do what they can not to bring Covid here and care enough about others to be vaccinated.

      6
      1. JohnW;
I am a resident of Oahu. Still unvaccinated, still covid free. You’re shaming someone for not wanting to do something to their own body. Saying it saves lives or its to protect others has proven to be a losing argument. You’re either going to get a virus or you’re not and its no ones fault if you do. It just is what it is. Just because the government pits us against each other it doesn’t make it okay to treat others like they are less than. We have to be better than that.

        17
        1. You are simply wrong if you don’t think the vaccine has saved numerous lives and greatly enhances your ability to fight the virus.
Most of the deaths now are the unvaccinated. The breakthrough cases have other problems contributing to their death. That comes from people in the medical field who actually know. One person not getting Covid is hardly a lesson that applies to what is best for all. Take good care Kimberley, I don’t wish anyone to suffer from Covid.

          7
          1. I dunno, John. The US Supreme Court just said employers can’t mandate the vaccine. What does that tell you about a house of cards quickly falling?

            1
          2. My understanding is the Federal Govt cannot tell company’s what to do?
My first reaction is that makes sense. Leave it up to each company to decide what is best for their situation. I’m pro vax obviously, but there is a limit to what you can legislate.

            3
          3. Give it up JohnW. Though I tire as well correcting the committed, K is a committed anti-vaxer. Take a look at the daily numbers on Oahu. Just a matter of time K. Have you read the accounts of multiple “fully retired” anti-vaxers and aficionados finding out the real difference between getting CV-19 un-vaxed is being on the other side of the grass?

            2
        2. Kimberly. Your attitude that I know better than Science is the fatal flaw so many in our country have taken on.
Saying it saves lives has proven to be a losing argument? Really? We were at one point having 2000 citizens dying daily.

          2
        3. Good Day KIMBERLY

“Just because the government pits us against each other it doesn’t make it okay to treat others like they are less than. We have to be better than that.”

          Indeed, Kimberly. Indeed.

“Raising fingers at each other will leave everyone without hands.”
          ― Abhijit Naskar

          2
          1. The original “government” in the early days of the pandemic made statements like: “We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. We have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.” or “Now, the virus — you know, a lot of people think that goes away in April with the heat — as the heat comes in. Typically, that will go away in April. We’re in great shape though. We have 12 cases — 11 cases, and many of them are in good shape now.”

Is that the government you mentione

          2. Rod W
The US government didn’t get the vaccine in record time. Oxford Astra zenica was first. US would only give EUA to Pfizer and Moderna more protectionism I assume.

          3. Sorry Rob W. Pfizer and Moderna developed their vaccines independent of any “government mandate”. No taxpayer funds were used by the most popular vaccine manufacturers, and J&J, which did receive some funding, has proven less effective anyway. Try again later.

        4. Hi Kimberly
You are right Kimberly here are some studies that prove your point.
Stay strong. PS I am not mad at anyone, we also chose to go unvaxxed caught it (Delta) then used the FLCCC protocol which includes the drug no one can mention, good to go in a week. We also have had a ton of friends in Kauai ask for it.
          Love you Hawaii

  17. I assume if you are not boosted, but have had 2 jabs, and are not eligible for a booster yet, that the governor (in all his non-wisdom) says you are not vaccinated and therefore have to have a negative test result before arrival in order to avoid quarantine?

I got my booster back in the first part of October, so I will be past the 10 weeks where the FDA says the booster starts waning when we arrive in 2 weeks. What about me governor???

    What a mess.

    8
  18. Thank you for keeping us up to date! Is there any mention of an age requirement for vaccination? We are traveling to Maui later this year. Both my wife and I are fully vaccinated with booster. The grandkids have both shots but, no booster. Thanks again.

    1. Dear Bethany, Right now it stands if not vaccinated then yes you have to test. Have a safe & fun trip whenever you do go! 🌺 🥥🍍🌈✈🌏📅🏖

    2. I’m sorry the rules change so much I can’t keep up and stopped paying attention. can someone please tell me if you are triple vaccinated, do you also need a negative test prior to travel to avoid quarantine from Florida to Maui? Thanks so much!

      1. Hi Bethany.

At this time the quarantine exemption is either based on vaccination or on testing. You do not need to have both.

        Aloha.

  19. Good! Everyone must get vaccinated or just stay home period. I just had a close contact test positive for Covid. Had a meeting with her on Monday fortunately I am fully vaxxed including the booster shot. It just doesnt pay to not be safe and responsible. Do the right thing

    2
    1. Was she vaccinated? Everyone vaccinated or not should be practicing safety and not doing non essential tasks or trips. Like maybe not going to Hawaii until this thing is over. I lived there almost 20 years and would visit many times a year. Why anyone would put themselves thru this is beyond me but hey it’s a free country used to be anyway do what you want if it makes you happy.

      2
    2. I think you’re joking. You’re joking, right? You can’t possibly think you’re protected from COVID if you’re triple vaxxed. How can anyone still be so misguided?

      14
      1. Here’s a few answers: vaccination + booster reduces the chance that you become sick, put an additional strain on hospitals, or die; the un-vaccinated are still the predominant visitors to hospitals and suffer through the longest stays if they live; finally, why be a wuss? It’s a jab that you don’t even feel, except for that feeling of I am doing all i can to keep other people safe.

        3
        1. Yeah I don’t know anyone that did it for anyone but themselves and now they are all ticked off because they have to still wear a mask. So let’s get over the whole I did this for someone else’s benefit. If people were really concerned they would t be flying to Hawaii. If you want to be vaxxed and boosted cool. But let’s not spin it like you are doing anyone a favor. If anything it’s the pandemic of the vaccinated.

          3
          1. Everyone I know got vaccinated to save the vulnerable. Our parents, grandparents, immune compromised. And yes ourselves. Must be a sad it’s all about me world you live in. Sorry pal.

            2
          2. Personally I did do it for others. I have many immune compromised people in my life and I always do whats best for them and to protect myself as well.
Even the brief time we were able to take our masks off I still kept wearing (as did most people) in stores and crowded areas. I have ZERO problem wearing a mask in fact I actually enjoy it.
The pandemic of the vaccinated? What does that even mean?

            2
        2. Sorry to burst your bubble but hospital Omicron is about 50-50…in other word Omicron doesn’t care if your vaxed or not. Also most people do live through a Covid infection.

          5
          1. Citation please. In the real world, the effects on survival without complications very much depends on vaccination status. Actual reporting shows that the severe cases are almost 90% un-vaxed. We have no idea of the long-term consequences of staying un-vaccinated, infected, hospitalized and still having long-haul symptoms for more than a year now in some cases. Stay in the lane you have chosen, but leave your unfounded analysis at the door or pony up.

            4
          2. James B…how about the CDC website? Good enough citation for you? You should apply the words to yourself as well. Instead, you jump down the throat of anyone that disagrees with you.

            3
          3. The hospitalization rate per million among unvaccinated people stands at 532.7; it’s 105.9 for folks vaccinated with at least two doses. This means that the reduction of hospitalization risk for those inoculated with at least two doses is 80.1 percent.

The ICU occupancy rate per million is 135.6 for unvaccinated people and just 9.2 for those who have gotten two doses of COVID-19 vaccines. So vaccination reduces the ICU risk by 93.2 percent.

            For your edification.

            5
          4. Thanks James.Great info clearly stated. Unfortunately naysayers won’t get it. Still no cure for that.

            2
          5. Chris, that’s simply false. It does not say that on the CDC website, not even close. Why do you spread misinformation like that when some vulnerable people could make a choice not to be vaccinated as a result of misinformation and then possibly die as a result? If you don’t want to get vaccinated that’s your choice, why try to talk others out of it?

            1
          6. John, taken from a headline in December…”CDC Announces 79% of All US Omicron Cases Have Occurred in Vaccinated Individuals”. And, for your information, I AM vaccinated. It was my choice as it should be…not a government mandate. I personally think the vaccine is very effective against the original and the delta variant…I’m just stating that the vaccine is NOT effective against the Omicron variant.

            2
          7. Chris. I just did a deep dive into the CDC website and no where can I find any indication that 79% of vaccinated individuals have contracted omicron. Stop Chris.

    1. You are put with the other deplorables and forced to watch CNN non-stop (Clockwork Orange style). Sure, the CNN part violates the 8th Amendment, but we’re all in this together.

      9
      1. Kathy asked: “What is the current requirement for those not vaccinated or boosted?”

        I answered her question.

        It’s all right there.

  20. Hi again – I’m a bit Nervous Nelly, but I’m a little confused. I input my info on the Safe Travels site, uploaded my vaccine card (triple vaxxed), and immediately received an email with the QR code. But underneath the QR code on my phone (not in the email) is a red X and “Screened: No”. Does this just mean I’ve yet to have my documentation screened at the airport? Or have I missed something?

Also, is it mandatory to upload the Aloha Safe Alert app? Thanks so much for your help!

    1
    1. Hi Glenna.

You’re correct in your interpretation that you are simply pending verification screening. No, you do not need to upload the Aloha Safe app.

      Aloha.

      2
  21. What if I got my QR code but it is yellow, not green? Is there a way to get the wrist band in Salt Lake (my connecting flight to Maui)? I’d rather not wait in line once I get to Maui airport if I don’t need to.

    1. Ginger M – Not sure why yours is yellow instead of green. I would think as long as you receive the QR code, you’re good to go and just need to get screened in order to get the green check mark by the “Screened” section either at your departure airport for a wristband or upon arrival in Hawaii in case you can’t pre-screen. What does your Safe Travels account indicate? Just need screening?

  22. Not interested in this mess that is called Hawaii. You could be compliant with all their ever changing rules when you take off from the mainland but be out of compliance when you land. No thanks.

    8
    1. Exactly! I had Covid a year ago December and I still tested positive for Covid Antibodies a year after I had the virus. None of these mandates acknowledge those of us with Natural Immunity. I have 3 timeshares in Hawaii but it’s going to be a long time before I will visit them as long as these ever changing, discriminatory mandates exist.

      8
  23. I just listened to Dr. Robert Malone, pioneer of mRNA vaccine technology, say that the more vaxx and boosters that a person has, the more likely they are to get omicron!! But keep it up Hawaii, this is a good thing for you to do. You have a couple of tough months ahead of you, but by March, 2022, everyone there will have had it and you can stop this nonsense, much to your dismay…

    11
    1. I heard the same thing from him and other virologists and I handle COVID cases. It’s true – I’ve seen it. My own daughter is a nurse, triple vaxxed and is COVID +. She’s the sickest one in her household by far. Her unvaxxed husband and children barely felt sick. This is the first year in the previous 16 years that we will be giving our travel funds to a state without these restrictions. Trust me – we spend money even we travel. So sad that Hawaii is so misguided.

      9
      1. There’s a reason they call individual tales “anecdotes”. A pinpoint in time never equates to actual surveillance data. Nice try though, having supposed medical professionals in your anecdote. Your taking the word of a paid “expert” over actual epidemiologists does speak volumes about your trusted channels for information. Read my original post. The man is no different from “America’s Frontline Doctors”.

        3
    2. So if you are listening to a 60-year-old telling his tale about “inventing” mRNA technology when he was 28, then we know which channels you prefer. He’s been on all the sub-reddits, Bannon’s podcast, Carlson, and every wacko podcast and YouTube channel that pays him.

      3
  24. Thank you for staying on top of this subject. We travel to HI in 5 weeks and have not gotten the booster since it does not help with the variants. We will schedule it now and get it done.

Thanks again for all your help!

      1. Because it’s not very effective against Omicron. Also, I’m not eligible for a booster until March but wouldn’t get one anyway. I had covid after Christmas.

        6
      2. Why would you? I know many people who got the initial 2 jabs and now are like booster ain’t happening. Most responded with yeah only reason I got the jabs was to not wear a mask and that was a bunch of bs. Cdc, fauci, who have zero credibility left. They blew it.

        10
      3. Paul, The original vaccines are effective against the Alpha COVID variant (original form of COVID). They do not prevent variants. In fact, the variants have figured out how to alter so that they infect vaccinated people. Thus the current vaccines do not prevent the variants. Not trying to scare anyone just stating facts which are not published by the media.

Peter McCollough is an excellent source if you can find his documentation. And no he’s not a quack.

        2
        1. I can’t speak for Paul, but your information, while somewhat correct, is not the reason to remain unvaccinated. By prevention I assume you mean that the vaccine makes one immune to CV-19 and its variants. Your premise misses the mark. By far, noting hospitalization and ICU differences between the vaxed/unvaxed, you are putting yourself, family and contacts at risk for a unnecessary hospital stay or demise.

          1
  25. I recently read about Aloha Safe phone app and was led to believe it is required/still required. Yet, I have not read anything within your email writings or anywhere else. Didnt see anything on SafeTravels.

What is the status of this contact tracing app and whether out remains mandated?

    1. Hi Craig.

We have not heard a word about its use for months. So as far as we know or anyone has commented, it does not appear to be required. In fact, based on what others have said, we aren’t sure it ever was.

      Aloha.

      1. I downloaded the Aloha Safe Alert app many months ago. Periodically my phone alerts me that it’s “checking exposures”. (Not much good since you need to be in close contact with someone who has the app, who tested positive, and whose result is reflected in the app.) With Omicron, it’s outdated. But…the app has links to copious information & statistics about Hawaii cases, trends, vaccinations, etc., statewide and island-by-island – quite useful and interesting.

    2. On our last trip to Maui, no one checked to see if we had the Aloha Safe app. Not sure why the county website said it was mandatory.

We’ll be on Maui in 2 weeks. I never deleted the app from my phone, so I guess I’m still “legal” for Maui.

    3. I have been to Maui many times during COVID as my family lives there. Nobody has ever asked about the tracking app although from what I read, They make is sound like it I s required.

  26. Anyone know if United, in Denver, has resumed giving out wrist bands? And if so where are they available in the airport? At the gate, etc? I transfer in Denver for my flight to Maui. Thanks in advance.

  27. Where I live in CA, there are many positive cases of Covid, but the number needing to be hospitalized is small. This conforms to virus behavior….each mutation is more contagious but less deadly. There are many cases of fully vaccinated and boostered people getting the virus. The rules here for people who might have gotten exposed are strict so many healthy hospital workers can’t go to work. I’m guessing that’s true in Hawaii as well. We need herd immunity!

    16
  28. I’m getting my booster 1-29-22. We arrive in Kauai on 2-8-22. I have searched many sites and can’t find the answer to my question so I’m really hoping someone here can help 😁 is there a timeframe after vaccination before being considered fully vaccinated?! Is 10 days enough?!

    1. I think it is 14 days, so you need to get it 15 days in advance of traveling. There may be a grace period from the time it goes into effect to accommodate those arriving around the time the new rules take effect.

    2. Found this on the Kauai COVID page which is before this latest booster rule, but gives you an idea how many days are needed.

Travelers are considered fully vaccinated on the 15th day after their second dose in a 2-dose series, like the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or on the 15th day after a single-dose vaccine, like Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine.

    3. hawaiicovid19.com/travel website indicates 14 days. “Individuals arriving from the U.S. or its Territories who are fully vaccinated may enter Hawaiʻi without pre-travel testing/quarantine starting the 14th day after the completion of their vaccination.”

      1
      1. I believe (hope) that the “after 14 days” refers to the original shot(s) as opposed to so-called booster shots, since that was written prior to booster shots being required.

Is there supposed to be some sort of “only effective after” date of these shot(s)?

We’re scheduled to arrive Kauai on the 28th, and may may need to move that date up a day or two, depending on when Ige makes this effective.

  29. regarding the new booster requirement: is this to be able to fly/arrive in Hawaii or to partake in indoor activities? What if the time lapse between 2nd shot and booster hasn’t elapsed yet? For example, 2nd shot on January 14, then flying to Hawaii in February? Currently supposed to wait 5 months to get a booster after your 2nd shot.

    1
    1. I have this same question. 1 family member got their 2nd dose in July and was told can get the booster after 6-7+ months after. Another family member just got his second dose yesterday. Trip is in a few weeks?

  30. Could you please tell me — if a tourist becomes covid-positive during their stay, where does the 5-10 day isolation take place? We have a trip planned for Jan 28 – one week Maui and one week Big Island. Becoming covid-positive while there is by far my biggest concern. Our group is triple-vaxxed, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get covid! Thank you!

    3
    1. Hi Glenna.

It is our understanding that it is self isolation nowadays rather than early in Covid when there were specific properties.

      Aloha.

      1
    2. That pretty much cuts to the chase on this whole issue doesn’t it? You’re triple vaxxed so you are realistically safe from getting sick, at worst mild symptoms and yet you do have a chance of testing positive if you get tested. Clearly don’t get tested if you don’t have symptoms.

      17
  31. Just learned a new tip for getting the wrist band. Been flying HA and they’ve been great doing it at the gate, turns out you can get the wrist band at the front counter as well as at the departure gate, potentially saving you some time if they are short staffed at the gate. This was in SEA

    1. Per latest email from Victoria at HawaiiGuide, the booster shot is not required to travel to Maui, but to get into restaurants and bars.

Copied from the email I received: Effective on Maui beginning January 8, 2022, the definition of ‘fully vaccinated’ will now include getting a booster shot to further increase immunity against COVID-19. This change primarily affects bars, restaurants, and gyms. To the best of our knowledge, this rule change does NOT affect Safe Travels to Maui at this time.

      1
  32. I am on the mainland and coming home latter this month. I dont have the booster. However I did get the two doses of moderna in Maui.

To fly to Maui do I now need to get the test from a “trusted partner”?

I just am not clear on it.

    1
  33. I’m on the Safe Travels site and it’s making me upload CommomPass, which then is requiring me to complete the Travel and Health form. I thought I could skip all of that? Where can I just upload my vaccination information ? Thanks!

    1. Hi Jennifer.

There is no requirement for CommonPass. This is where you need to go. Should be simple as widely reported, especially since the elimination of the health questionnaire and the immediate generation of the needed QR code. https://travel.hawaii.gov/#/.

      Aloha.

      1
      1. Do people need to upload their cdc vaccine card to the safe travels website what
If its already on the safe travels website from the trip before
        Thank you
