  1. I will receive the first vaccine before traveling to Maui in January but will not have received my second dose at time of travel. Any info on whether I’ll still need a covid test after one vaccination?

  2. Hi there,
When I first read this article, it sounded like it was saying that vaccinations would be a requirement to come to Hawaii starting February 1. When I read it again, I think what it’s saying is that other requirements wouldn’t be necessary with vaccinations, such as quarantining. (I’m coming to Maui January 24 for a couple weeks and wondering if there’s a mandatory quarantine there now?)
Anyway, I have a couple friends who are also concerned about whether vaccines will be mandatory to come to Hawaii anytime in the near future. Considering they haven’t been proven safe or for that matter even necessarily effective, that does not sound like a sound policy.
Appreciate you educating us on this.
    Thank you,
    Kathleen

    1. Hi Kathleen.

Lt. Gov. Green said they will not be mandatory. That is all that we have heard.

      Aloha.

  3. How many times is this going to be revised? What if the vaccine does nothing to prevent people
From getting COVID? How easy it will
Be to forge the card…”lol. Another joke that will continue tourism decline… but that is the end game isn’t it… no more tourists… except the 1% ers… Larry Ellison and friends… no more riff raff

  4. Aloha Roy & Jerry

(Rob & Jeff I didn’t want to use your real names government might be tracking you)

Why does everything these days have to be a government conspiracy?

To the I don’t want the government tracking me crowd here on BOH if you’re so concerned about being tracked then why are you posting comments here from your smart phone, laptop or god forbid a PC.

    Not a very smart move.

On the subject at hand you know that this going to get screwed up and get revised 20 times before it’s rolled out and the rules will change again almost daily and be different for evry major, so expect the worse and hope for the best

      1. Interesting that Hawai’i is going to promote widespread vaccination and use it to bypass quarantine given that 1. The vaccine is not FDA approved for general use. Emergency use authorization is not approval and the vaccine has not gone through the safety and efficacy testing required to get a drug approved. Emergency use is supposed to be only for the most at risk populations (which is not the vacst majority) and 2. This vaccine has never been tested for whether it prevents colonization and transmission and indeed it is theorized that it does not. In other words, it may prevent You from getting the disease but does nothing to prevent you from spreading it around to others and may in fact make that highly likely as you won’t experience the symptoms to know you are sick and should not travel. Hawai’i is just shilling for Big Pharma, not doing what is in the best interest of people.

  5. Thank you for keeping us informed. Here’s the dilemma on vaccinated people vs unvaccinated – 1) the shot is only 94% effective so 6 out every 100 people who get the shot could still get the virus and pass it on to HI. 2) Why dont people who can show they had the virus and now have antibodies skip quarantine upon arrival? I don’t think authorities have considered all the facts and allowing people a”I was vaccinated” as a free pass to enter is not fair to others who have antibodies but are going to skip the vaccination because its not recommended for them to have. We really want to vacation in HI but your regs are too fluid and ever changing to feel comfortable planning a trip.

      1. This sounds like communism to me. Tracking our health status, making us get medical procedures so we can travel and carrying a card to prove it. If we let this happen the government tyranny won’t stop and soon we will all be prisoners in the name of safety.

Also, none of these vaccines are approved. They are still in trials. They’ve been approved for emergency use so everyone who gets it is basically a part of a large scale trial. Read Pfizer and Moderna’s own fact sheets. We have no idea what side effects could pop up. We need to stop freaking out and standing up for our rights.

        1. This sounds like communism to me…and we will all be prisoners in the name of safety – aka asking the public to support measures to protect the communal spread of a deadly disease, and prevent our fellow citizens from Dying.

We should all ‘stop freaking out’ – aka as of 12/30, 1.7m+ deaths globally, 340k in the US (even with severe lockdowns and partially adhered to guidelines).

COVID deniers and those against communal efforts to stop the disease should just come out and say their truth – I’m selfish, don’t care about others dying and don’t want to be told what to do if it inconveniences me at all.

  6. Does this mean Kauai will remain on the “14 day quarantine” until Feb.? We have plans for mid January and were hoping things might open up.It seems more likely thgat we will have to cancel those plans.

    1. Kauai isn’t going to let anyone in as soon as three weeks. Go to Maui or Big Island instead (Big Island has the best testing system).

    2. Elizabeth,

      A few things:

Currently, Kauai’s current incoming travel quarantine is 10 days rather than 14. This change become effective on 12/17 along with the rest of the state.

Even with Lt Governor’s Green Vaccination Passport program approval by Governor Ige, counties such as Kauai can still choose to opt out of the program much like Mayor Kawakami choose do for Kauai now.

With regards to Kauai rejoining the current safe travels program or the the vaccination travel program, anyone’s guess is is good as the next person’s. Mayor Kawakami hasn’t given any info or hints as to when he plans to re-open the island minus when the cases on the mainland decrease or he gets the Governor to approve a two test quarantine system. And neither of those are likely to happen before February.

So here is my advice with regards to your February travel plans to Kauai. Change them now if you don’t want to live with uncertainty of what Kauai’s Mayor might choose to do with regards to opting back into the safe travels program. Maui, Oahu and Hawaii island are still part of the safe travels program if you are insistent on going on a Hawaiian vacation during a pandemic!

  7. Covid19 a influenza virus to mandate to be vaccinated to be able to fly and on top of it you still have to wear a mask???that is absolutely nonsense.there will be covid 21 22 etc.nobody ever can cure a influenza virus at all.we have to live with it.sorry to say this but it is a political power trip
To control humans in a communistic way.

  8. Aloha Guys,

Reading this brings some concerns for the potential encroachment on individual liberties/rights.

“Last week the US Dept. of Defense revealed its new Covid-19 vaccination record card which it called the “simplest” method of tracking vaccinations…The government said, “Everyone will be issued a written card that they can put in their wallet that will tell them what they had and when their next dose is due. Let’s do the simple, easy thing first. Everyone’s going to get that.”
…Why does the Department of Defense need to track your Vaccination? I guess HIPAA doesn’t really protect your Medical Records privacy after all.

“Google Play Store and the Apple App Store wants become a global standard”
…aaaannnnd Big Tech perfectly positioned to make even Bigger money…Shocker?…Not!🙄

When vaccinations become a requirement to travel to another state in the US, there will be Civil Rights law suits, this I am sure of.

    Thanks for the info guys!

  9. Aloha everyone at BoH and Mele Kalikimaka…
Mahalo again for all the various updates…and I read today about the possibility of vaccination clearance for arrivals in Hawai’i and that one of the possible airlines to be considered is Virgin Atlantic. I usually use Virgin for the first lego of my travels to the Islands – most times having to overnight in L.A. Would proof of a vaccination here in Europe (Ireland or U.K) allow me to make my customary trips to Hawai’i? Is the ban on European travellers to the U.S.A.lifted or be lifted anytime soon? I’m hoping to get to Maui in May (after many reschedulings) so any information and advice would be great.
Again, many thanks and Blessings for the Christmas Season

    1. Hi Michael.

Happy holidays! We sure don’t know, but it would seem that your thinking and the lifting of the international travel bans together with standards for globally proving vaccination will happen sooner than later.

      ALoha.

  10. Anything from the wef is a nonstarter. Rt has already done a story on this card and there are massive privacy and health info concerns. The government needs to operate a secure website that confirms to hoiaa.

  11. Hawaii and entire world needs to read what this doc and others with him from Oxford and Harvard have to say before we start this vaccine and passport nonsense!

    lifesitenews.com/opinion/we-have-to-fight-back-doctor-lays-out-sensible-anti-covid-strategy?

  12. I will be among the first in line to receive the covid vaccine. However, I find it odd that politicians led by VP Elect Harris, who said that “I will not be getting the Trump vaccine anytime soon” and NY Gov. Cuomo who had doubted the efficacy of the vaccine are now lining up to receive it(cameras present of course).

Thank you again to BOH for your valuable website. I don’t make any Hawaii travel plans without checking with you guys first.

    1. Cuomo and Gavin are like a lot of polititians are hypocrats.they know the vaccine is not curing anything.but it can like any vaccines have severe side effects.the politicians are not getting one.Maby a placebo.its lies people waking up every day.

  13. Wow Did anyone read this? The Dept of Defense is going to issue a tracking card?, kind of scary , but does anyone else see an element of government tracking and control coming soon?
    Aloha

  14. Thanks so much for your updates. From some of the comments I’m guessing when we return there won’t be as many “tourons” (tourist morons) when we return. Pity.
Keep up the good work. Stay safe. Live aloha.

  15. mahalo!

seems pretty short-sighted policy considering at this time it has not been determined that vaccines will do anything to prevent people from getting and spreading covid.

    1. Lol. People get upset about nothing. How is this different than showing your kids shot records before they are allowed to enroll in school?
You’re free not to get a shot. But states are also free to respond how they see fit during a world-wide issue.

      1. Hi Bryon B
Because It hasn’t been comprehensively tested for efficacy, it obviously hasn’t been tested for long-term health effects, it hasn’t gone through the normal scientific testing routines, and most damningly, the manufacturer is not liable for any adverse effects. And it’s being relentlessly pushed by a group of people who very publicly advocate lowering the global population. Also we have lived with corona (no shutdowns) it has moved through and everyone is fine. 99.97% chance of survival holds true here.
Merry Christmas to you and yours.

  16. Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.
So sad to read about this requirement. Looks like we may not be visiting in 2021 after all. Mahalo to BOH for keeping us informed. Be well.

    1. Hi David.

Thanks. This is not a new requirement, but rather is optional as stated in the article by Josh Green.

      Aloha.

  17. What about those of us who have had Covid and recovered so we have the natural antibodies? We don’t need the vaccine but will there be a way for us to upload “proof” of our antibodies?

    1. Hi Darla.

There is already a procedure in place.

“If I have recovered from COVID-19 but still test positive for the virus do I still have to quarantine?
In order to qualify for a COVID-19 exemption to the 10-day quarantine, you must submit the following two pieces of information and receive approval prior to arrival:

A copy of a positive molecular COVID-19 test (NAAT or PCR) from a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) certified laboratory taken no more than 90 days and no less than 11 days prior to your departure date.
A signed letter from a medical provider stating that you have not exhibited symptoms and are fully recovered – this letter must be signed at least 10 days after your positive test and no more than 14 days from your departure date.
To request an exemption, go to ag.hawaii.gov/travelexemption. Please allow a week for processing.”

      Aloha.

  18. Thank you for this update!
As we have planned our April 2021 Maui trip to our home timeshare back in 2019, we just booked our Awards Travel with 2 airlines, are looking forward to receiving our vaccines.

  19. Meanwhile, the Hawaii AG would sue the US for not allowing illegal aliens in the country without proper immunizations against small pox, measles, mumps, rubella, polio and the rest of the diseases that plague the third world.

  20. Great news from the Lt. Gov. If the Gov. approves eliminating testing, and accepting the “vaccination passport” it should help the Hawaii economy recover and help my friends and extended Ohana economically.
The pretesting has been problematic and the post arrival testing on the Big Island has reportedly led to many cancellations(including my cancellations).
    Thanks for the update

  21. Spending Christmas week in Cabo instead of Maui. Bummed to be missing the islands. Everyone here wears a mask, but I didn’t have to spend another grand on COVID tests for the group. Get it together Hawaii in time for my 10 day trip in April, or don’t and we will take our $$$ elsewhere.

    1. Hi Jared,

Hawaii has it more together than other states which is why it’s consistently one of the two preforming state’s with regards to COVID-19 rates. So so sorry you don’t share that opinion and don’t want to spend the 1,000 dollars to continue to help keep Hawaii safe but I hear Mexico is also lovely in April!

  22. Going to give “show me your papers” a whole new meaning so now effectively you can throw HIPPA out the window with this stunt and while I had a vaccination record while actually serving last I checked not everyone will be serving and be required to have this so medical privacy appears to be sacrificed if you want to travel. And anyone that believes that there will be any sense of security in how the records of this will ne maintained then just look at how wonderfully several of the US departments were not able to keep hackers out! If producing a shot record and masking while in the Islands will be the new norm then I guess I will be done with contributing to Hawaii’s economic recovery in the future after having done so for 30 straight years.

    1. Hippa protects you from medical professionals from disclosure your personal medical history. You voluntarily showing your shot records has noting to do with Hippa.

      1. Aloha Byron,

The operative word in your comment is “voluntarily”. What’s to keep it from progressing to “mandatory”? 🤷‍♂️

  23. Thank you for the continual updates! That is great news for those who plan to travel to the islands in mid-2021 like myself. This poses a new question for me though…

The two proposed vaccines are only for people aged 16 & 18+. What does that mean for children that will be accompanying their parents to the Islands? Some articles I have read state that a vaccine for kids may not even be able until August of 2021. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    1. Hi Jeremy.

Yes, you’re the second person to point that out. No word on that but the alternative to vaccine will likely remain testing, and that is required starting at age 5.

      Aloha.

  24. Vaccines in my state will likely not be available for me until summer. Since a vaccine is not a requirement, will HI still accept a negative COVID test result to avoid quarantine?

  25. If Hawaii is going to mandate vaccination before traveling to a state.. in the United States… good luck with that! Hawaii will lose an entire family who has traveled to the islands for over 30 years.. I will never vaccinate, and is a constitutional problem.

    Thank you!

    J.Little

  26. Are you kidding me?? I thought having papers to travel was only done in communist Russia not in an American state?? Unreal!!

  27. The only thing I would add is when you get the vaccination card is “take a picture of the card, save it somewhere and then put the card in your wallet”

  28. We don’t need a vaccine when this virus has 99.97% recovery rate. Why don’t you look at real deadly diseases like cancer which not have a 99.97% recovery rate. Please use the brain God gave you.

    1. 99.97% recovery rate is inaccurate. That math suggests only 100k deaths result if every man woman and child in the U.S. contracts COVID. We already have over 300k deaths. This type of misinformation doesn’t help.

  29. This jab is incredibly dangerous and down right reckless. childrenshealthdefense.org/protecting-our-future/covid-vaccine-safety-concerns/#facts

  30. So are you saying you will be required to be vacinated in order to go to Hawaii, a state that is part of the United States, the land of the free the home of the brave? Hawaii is going to see their $$ from tourism go way down. I plan on going to Mexico instead. They talk about the heard immunity, but how is that supposed to happen when you are requiring mask, and all the other crap. Sorry Hawaii, but you are going to lose millions of dollars.

  31. My guess is that if the future is anything like the past, The Hawaii Government will manage to screw this up also!

    1. Hi Mounque.

Kauai will undoubtedly be rejoining the Safe Travel program soon. At that point, all the rules are statewide.

      Aloha.

  32. Thanks.
Since children are not being vaccinated for covid, how will travel to Hawaii look if parents are vaccinated?

    1. Hi Brody.

Good question. We have not seen anything recently. It is set to be months before children will be vaccinated. Hawaii’s current testing rules are all set around those 5 years and above.

      Aloha.
