Anyone have any recent experience with the “check out” from KOA airport with these recent changes? If you have to take a post-landing test at KOA and get pick up a rental car, how long is that taking people after landing? (heard car rental lines can be brutal). Are the vaccinated who don’t have to test saving much time? Do you have to wait at the airport for the test results before you are allowed to leave?
Roy H
Daniel,
Currently, there are no changes in the covid testing since October. You will need to have a pre arrival covid test from one of the safe travels partners 72 hours before your last leg. Upon getting to the Big Island maybe 30% of the people off the plane will have to take a second rapid test. That testing takes approximately 30-40 minutes. At the car rental you will need to show a negative test, either the 72 hour test or the airport test. The vaccine passport that is being talked about so far has not happened. You need to go by the old guidelines. There may be new guidelines starting May 1st or June 1st.

Daniel – we arrived 4/17 at KOA. We had pre-check wristbands from United and I had a vaccination certificate (second dose on 3/18). The authorities at KOA simply took the first 15 or so rows of passengers off the plane for secondary testing with no exceptions for people with vaccination certificates. It took over an hour. Also, the car rental shuttle would only allow primary drivers only to board (the person who made the booking). They don’t accept photos of additional drivers (even if your spouse) so you then need to drive back to the terminal, pick up said spouse, and go back to the rental office and wait for another hour because the lines are so long.
Or, in our case, we’ll go back in a couple of days in the hope that the lines won’t be so long.
Joerg H.
David S.,
What rental car company did you use?
Sarah
I wouldn’t go through that much work to go on “vacation”. Only worth it if you are staying for a month. I doubt most people are.
Joerg H
Sarah,
Sorry to disappoint you, but Hawaii travel in April was around 70% of pre-COVID numbers. Even at 70%, some places are getting crowded again. Personally, I don’t find the hoops all that onerous, and well worth it in order for me to travel to Hawaii. Your mileage may vary, and that’s fine.
sean
if it stays 70%, mainlanders should be able to get some available houses soon
Gail M.
Flew back to LAX from Maui last night. Kahului airport was so busy. Long lines through security and also on arriving visitors waiting to jump through the covid hoops. The tourists are back! I can’t imagine how the airports will be able to handle the summer crowds unless the governor takes immediate action.
The approved covid test sights are a scam – $175 each from Ventura plus $125 each in Hilo to fly interisland. Why can’t the free test sights be accepted?
Lastly, we had a wonderful trip, worth every hassle and expense.
JohnW
Amazing that it’s a big deal if the state says you can can skip the testing requirements if you have been vaccinated. How could this additional option be a problem? The sooner they implement it the better. Seems like the perfect balance of public safety and supporting tourism. Keep in mind many people are already enjoying Hawaii rather then banging away on their keyboards how unfair it is they have to make compromises to travel during these times.
The pragmatic caring tourists are returning without complaint, let’s hope that trend continues.
Hawaii’s biggest problem is not when will tourism return, the danger it is dealing with is more tourism then it can comfortably handle.
Gloria G
I’m not sure people are not complaining. I know a family that just spent $160 PP for a family of four for the test prior to leaving San Diego. I understand why, just saying that is a lot of $$ on top of what you are already spending.
Jim
It would seem that the Hawaii state government could form (or should have formed) a representative commission (11 people?) that has the final authority for the entire state, without exception, to establish a set of rules for this particular situation. The commission would take input from the health establishment, residents, elected individuals, career state employees, mayors, business representatives, education representatives, law enforcement, etc. Have a comment period from them, maybe a week, then, at maximum, have a decision and publish the rules. The commission would be responsible for adjusting rules as the situation evolves, not individual reactions or proclamations. Maybe something like this would stabilize the volatility of Hawaii’s situation.

Thank you Mychal for bring a voice of reason on these comments.

Seems like the usual confusion. In his video, Green did indicate that Maui was not going to do a second test because they had better things to do with the money. Green also said he was working Ige. That made me hopeful for some unity in the decision making process. Green also said that Clear Pass was going to be looking at the CDC vaccine cards on the Hawaii Safe Travels site for validity. Surely hope that everyone can get on the same page soon. Most likely we will see some interesting things happen when the state of Hawaii gets to a 50/60% vaccine rate.
Aloha Guys

Hi Roy.
Yes, the usual confusion, as you said. Have a good weekend.

Aloha BOH,
I just returned home from 4 days on Honolulu and 7 days in Princeville. I’ll admit I was anxious about all the hoops, testing, vaccines, and details for Safe Travels. But you should all be aware that all of that is being way overblown. There are a few hiccups in the process, but it seems rather minor now. The $150 tests in HNL were expensive in order to fly over to Kauai but the rest was inexpensive and easy. Free vaccines (Pfiser) with no side- or after-effects. Free COVID19 testing at Walgreens in my home state (test results made it to my home computer before I made it home) and even the uploading Safe Travels was somewhat easy for an old guy.
Most Hawaiians were outgoing and happy people, but, of course, one will run into a few grumpy people as we always have on 3 previous trips. The weather was beautiful, the lush landscaping looked great this time of year, the mai tais at Dukes were perfect as usual, Bubba’s and Lapperts were still open and delicious, the fresh fish at the Dolphin were just as I remember. I am sad to report the Wake-Up Cafe in Hanalei, with the best Mac-Nut Cinnamon rolls, is no more.
United flights were perfect! The Southwest flight from HNL to LIH was perfect. In fact, all flights left on-time and the flight home was about 37 minutes early landing, even in 5″ of snow.
So, all of you people posting criticisms, COVID theories, fear and politics can save time and quit filling up this travel blog with your unfounded thoughts and statements. Be supportive of Hawaii and enjoy, and if you can’t do that, just stay home and off of this site.
Thank you Hawaii for sharing your beautiful islands with us once again.
Beat of Hawaii
Hi KC.
Thanks so much for your recent trip report. Good to hear.
Aloha.
Andrea B
Dear KC, amen! I agree with you. I’m planning my life long dream vacation trip to Oahu next year & I’m getting very excited ♡♡ I can’t wait & for me it will be well worth it!! Going to Pearl Harbor to pay my respects is #1 on my itinerary because I’ve always wanted to do this. My Grandfather was in the Navy & in Pearl Harbor.
Curtis C.
BOH said it all in the headline: Confusion Reigns. Thanks again to you guys for keeping us updated.
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Curtis.
Thanks. LOL.
Aloha.

I don’t know how long passengers are delayed, now, when waiting for testing, etc. at the airport in Kona, esp. during busy times. The summer, most likely, will be pretty busy and there is the Ironman Marathon scheduled in October, both times bring many people to the Big Island, I would think, that they’d have to have everything worked out in anticipation of large amounts of people .That airport is very small, where would backed up lines of passengers have to wait for health”clearance ?”
sean
At this point only an idiot would expect anything else…
CDC, “vaccinated travel is safe…” IGE, “oh that’s not the answer we were looking for”
Apparently Hawaii has a lot of idiots
Steve D
Ditto that
Don K.
Hawaii’s leaders from the top on down appear to be the most disorganized bunch of clowns on planet earth, so much so that it is not even close to being funny, just plain sad more appropriately sums it up. Why little IGGY allows the county mayors to dictate their own personal travel policies escapes any and all logic! It is like Hawaii has a Supreme ruler surrounded by little fifedoms that get to do whatever they want whenever they want. And the LG that apparently wants to be the heir apparent is no better. It would be laughable if so many individuals personal lives and businesses were not destroyed in the chaos!
Anonymouse
As opposed to what desantis on Florida who by executive fiat has decided he alone is the dictator not allowing counties amd local municipalities to come up with their own rules? Dont like how Hawaii is doing it then just stay away
James B
Funny anonymous! Was thinking the same thing.
Kimberly T
Anonymous, odd how you call someone who is protecting the inalienable rights of others a dictator.
Anonymouse
How is he protecting their inalienable rights? What by throwing caution to the wind and now Florida is coronavirus central.
Please elaborate on these inalienable rights he is supposedly protecting.
sean
By letting people make their own decisions.
Do you really need to be told to wash your hands or wear a mask if you are scared?
Wait don’t answer.
I have homes in Hawaii and Florida. Florida is better. That is unless you like watching your neighnors going broke and being depressed from restrictions and mandates.
In Florida I was quoted an hour wait at a chain restaurant last week. So i went ro the next place, no phone numbers given, no restrictions, no nonsense. Enjoy being told what to do.
Bahhhhhhh Bahhhhhh
Ed. C
@Sean and @Kimberly T – no sense in engaging someone like Anonymouse and James B.
I’ll just keep on silently laughing and shaking my head every time they make one of their ridiculous statements.
And enjoying my freedom.

The way Hawaii is doing it is keeping good tourists away. Own a place, visit few times a year but no Aloha any more for any visitors.
George P
I live in the USA. I should not have to have a vaccine card to travel in the US. I do believe Hawaii is the US. Being told I have to take a vaccine that has not proven to Stop Covid and now blood clots and causing death. Some of the earlier two shots needed, are having to retake. Just insane. Once proven it’s Safe , it still should be our choice and not be penalized if we don’t
So guess Kauai is off my list .. oh well
Mychal
Did you read the article? Hawaii is not requiring you to get vaccinated. It is only being considered as an alternative to pre-testing for the COVID virus. Your choice, no penalty.
Bryon B
You don’t have to provide a vaccine card to travel. It’s completely voluntary. Don’t want to do it. Then just take the test. What’s with the outrage?
Ryan M
Take the test (3 days before travel). I, for one think the option of showing a valid vaccination card (and a stiff penalty for forgeries) is the best way to open Hawaii to full tourism again.
Roy H
George, the state of Hawaii is only hoping not to contribute to the already dead half million plus dead people who praised from covid. You don’t need a vaccine card for travel to Hawaii.
Janes B
Gee George. I’m soooo happy that you won’t be coming to our beautiful, safe state. Aloha also means goodbye.
Beth B
I hope visitors will choose to go to Big Island instead of Maui. We are being overrun with tourists!
Ed D.
I hope most people don’t go to Hawaii at all. That way we could see people like you beg for people to come because your main source of income has left you high and dry!
Anonymouse
Well your hope won’t happen because unlike you and others here there are the rest of us who love Hawaii and are willing to jump thru any hoop to get there why are you in this site anyway? Bye Felicia
Steven S
In other words, our April 22nd arrival plans are unchanged. We have an appointment at Walgreens in NJ well within the 72-hour window and we have a photocopy of our CDC Vaccination Cards.
Kristy
Why do you need a vaccination for for something that is 99.98% survival rate? This is considered experimental and therefore if I die within 12 months of taking it, my life insurance will not pay, my health insurance could be cancelled also. I know 2 people who ended up in the hospital within 2 weeks after the second dose, and my niece had a miscarriage after her second dose. Please do your research, they can only administer it on an emergency basis, that is why they want to keep states locked down.
Mychal
You are not required to get a vaccine. This subject of this thread is about not require folks with a vaccine to get a pre-test. If you don’t want to get the vaccine, get a COVID test. Not that complicated. Your anecdotal stories aside, most folks that get the vaccination find that the extremely low risk of serious vaccine side effects is worth it given the higher risk of contracting COVID and potentially dying from it.
Paulc
Finally a voice of reason. What we need is vaccinated flights to Hawaii
Ed D.
So you are saying that if someone close to you died after receiving the vaccine, you would be okay with that? Right? I’d bet you would have a different opinion about the vaccine if that happened to one of your loved ones! Playing “Russian Roulette” with an “unproven” vaccine should not be acceptable to anyone!
Mychal
Ed, There have been over 200,000,000 doses of COVID vaccine given out in the U.S. alone. At this point no deaths have been tied to the vaccine except for a few deaths related to blood clotting with the J&J vaccine. While tragic, the deaths from J&J were literally 1 in a million. I do know people that have died – from COVID, not the vaccine. The odds of dying from COVID are 7000 times greater than dying from the J&J vaccine in my age group. Modern a and Pfizer will be applying for full approval in a month. What proof are you waiting for?
Joerg H
I agree completely, and they have not yet tied the J&J vaccine directly to the blood clots. Correlation does not prove causality. So just because someone get sick or does after getting the vaccine doesn’t mean that it’s the vaccine that caused it.
Shelia T
Agree with you 100%. Not proven it works.
Sorry for your issues.
Steve D
So true.
Kimberly T
Does anyone know why they are pushing so hard for these vaccines? Fauci’s words; “They don’t protect you from getting OR spreading the virus.”!They only, “supposedly” lessen the symptoms, which there are prescription, as well as over the counter meds to do just that. They have no idea the long term ramifications from the vaccine. Many have contracted the virus after vaccination and several have even died. So, what’s the purpose, the goal? I can’t seem to find anyone, including Fauci, who can answer that question.
Mychal
First, Fauci did not say that the vaccine does not protect your against the COVID virus (see link politifact.com/factchecks/2021/mar/08/instagram-posts/misleading-video-suggests-dr-anthony-fauci-said-va/)
Second, the vaccines have shown in studies and in real world (see Israel) to limit severe impact and death from COVID to near zero levels. If there were an over the meds that could do that don’t you think the nearly 600,000 folks that died of COVID in the U.S. would have taken them?
Third, of course some folks that are vaccinated are still going to contract COVID. It is not 100%. You can’t make decisions based on managing everything to zero.
Kimberly T
Mychal, hmmm. I see what you are saying, however I need to correct you; yes, Fauci did say you can still get and give covid after taking the vaccine. Granted, the guy changes his story each time he’s on TV, but I assure you, he said it. As for alternative treatments, they absolutely exist and have been successful. The majority of people who have died from ONLY Covid, which does not nearly reach the 500k reported, died due to intubation. Intubation is not how severe cold viruses are treated. But, setting aside all of the this and that, my question is STILL why the heavy handed push to take this vaccine? We have had many severe/deadly flu viruses (I actually know a young, healthy airline pilot who suddenly died from the flu 6 years ago; but I don’t know anyone who’s had an actual diagnosed case of covid) with vaccines, yet we were never coerced or forced by proxy (i.e access to entertainment, business, vacations, etc) to get a vaccine. So, I just want to know… why now? Why this virus?
Anonymouse
Who is forcing you to get a vaccine? Answer no one. Should you? Absolutely but it’s not mandatory for anyone. So please just stop.
Mychal
Kimberly, you originally said that Fauci stated that “vaccines don’t protect you from getting the virus”. Now you are saying that he stated “you can still get the virus after taking the vaccine”. Two completely different statements. Words matter. Of course you can still get the virus after taking the vaccine. Studies and real world data are showing an efficacy rate of around 95% so 5% of folks may still catch the virus.
There is legitimate debate as to whether or not ventilation helps in treating the COVID virus but to say that intubation (ventilation) is the cause of a significant number of the COVID deaths is wholly unsupported and irresponsible.
Why are folks being encouraged to take the COVID vaccine? Because it works. Israel, which haa over 60% of its population fully vaccinated has seen its COVID cases decrease from 12,000 persons per day back in January to about 150 per day currently.
In the US, the 65+ age group (our most vaccinated population) accounted for over 50% of all COVID cases back in January. Now they are less than 25% of the total cases and account for fewer cases than the 50-64 and 18-49 age groups.
Or maybe it is just the government just trying to put 5G in everyone’s arms.
Pick one.
James B
Did you read the Politifact article? Would you rather the word of a grifter over a guy who beat the scourge of HIV? Contrary to your numbers supposition, the 600k lost souls is most likely an undercount as an unknown number died at home or on the streets. Those suffering intubation because the cytokines left little lung capacity would probably disagree with your outrageous assumptions of a worldwide pandemic.
JohnW
Kimberly, why do you think because you don’t know anyone who has died from Covid that makes it not serious?
Millions of people have in fact have known someone who has died from Covid.
We are recovering (hopefully)from leadership in this country that was the epitome of narcissism and self above all else. Total lack of empathy for others. It has effected a lot of people and as result this pandemic has become politicized beyond all reason.
You ask why this virus? Because there is not a single reputable Doctor that would deny it’s far worse then a normal flu.
We’re close to putting this behind us and the biggest obstacle is the people spreading lies about a very effective and safe vaccine
that has already saved the lives of many thousands of people.
Stay healthy and get vaccinated and you are light years ahead of those less fortunate.
Kimberly T
JohnW, I disagree with you. How do you know covid is worse than the flu? What flu? Oh, the one that Fauci got a patent on and can call it whatever he wants, such as oh, I don’t know, maybe Covid? There are a lot of doctors who have said Covid is similar to the flu, unfortunately they are silenced. You’ll see, it may be 5 years from now, but you’ll see. I’m 100% confident of that.
Joerg H
What if you’re wrong? The consequences would be tragic.
Anonymouse
Why are you here spreading these lies anyway? What do you have against science? Why attack everything Fauci does or does not say?
NO there are NOT a lot of doctors who have said that Covid is similar to the flu and if they have they should immediately lose their licenses.
The only ones silenced are those spreading lies and conspiracy theories for political gain.
Joerg H
Reduce the symptoms, as in keep you off a ventilator and out of the morgue. Nothing over the counter will do that. Ask the 1/2 million dead if they would have preferred the vaccine.
Kimberly T
Joerg, 1) unless you have some other medical condition, such as heart disease, lung disease, cancer, etc.., its highly unlikely you’ll end up in the morgue due to covid. 2) the ventilators are what caused most of the deaths outside of #1 and 3) what do you think doctors were telling their Covid patients? “Go home, get rest and take an over the counter pain reliever or cough medicine.”
My goodness. People have been so brainwashed. You must actually believe that a covid diagnosis automatically means a hospital stay, ventilation and then death. How many people have survived the virus in comparison to those who’ve died? Millions!!! Many millions!!!
Joerg H
Kimberly, Again you are ignoring the 1/2 million who have died. This isn’t just a flu, and so many people pretending that it is has meant that some of those 1/2 million died needlessly.
Anonymouse
Kimberly 99.99999 % of scientists and doctors know this is a very dangerous virus. “what do you think doctors were telling their Covid patients? “Go home, get rest and take an over the counter pain reliever or cough medicine.”” What specific doctor says this. I want names.
LOL um no one ever said that a positive means and automatic hospital stay. Funny though here you are blaming supposedly the ventilators then you say oh it really doesnt happen!
I have had several close friends contract it and pass away. I have a number of friends who got it and have recovered however they have lingering conditions in one case almost a year later.
How many have survived? Since when do we calculate results of a virus or sickness by whom survives? Would you prefer 50% of people die? Would you then take it more seriously?
If 10,000 people were dying of plane crashes a month you can count on it that the airlines would be shut down.
I do sincerely hope one day you will educate yourself and stop spreading lies and misinformation on the interwebs.
But your one of those people when local officials say there is a huge storm, flood etc please stay inside your the one who runs out screaming But my freedoms.
Please please stay away from Hawaii.

We are traveling to Kauai on May 17th..as I understand it we need a negative covid test uploaded to the Safe Travels site to board our flight from San Francisco it has to be from a trusted partner. No older than 72 hours. Is that correct?
Robert B
Vaccine Passports are Unconstitutional, especially since the CV19 Vaccines are NOT Approved by the FDA. Vaccines are only have Emergency Authorization.

ok so when they are officially approved then what will your complaint be? The Supreme court has ruled any number of times that local state and federal officials are well within their rights to put down whatever rules and regulations needed to ” What does the phrase general welfare mean?
The concern of the government for the health, peace, morality, and safety of its citizens. Providing for the welfare of the general public is a basic goal of government. The preamble to the U.S. Constitution cites promotion of the general welfare as a primary reason for the creation of the Constitution.

After a year of nonsense and incompetence from the state of Hawaii it’s finally dawned on me what we’re dealing with. Remember the old Andy Griffith Show? Ige = Goober. Green = Barney. Hara = Gomer. Not an Andy in sight, unfortunately.
James B
Funny. To me Florida Man = DeSatan = Alfred E. Newman (what me worry?, just like Donald) comes to mind.
Gloria G.
If this is the case, then if we are vaccinated Do we have to have a test prior to arrival?: CDC announced last week that fully vaccinated people could travel within the United States without getting tested for COVID before traveling or quarantining after travel. Mask wearing and social distancing guidelines, however, are to remain in effect for all.
THANKS in advance for your answer.
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Gloria.
Yes you do at this time.
Aloha.

My family will not be returning to Hawaii as long as Hawaii requires proof of vaccination in order to practice free will.
Mychal
Hawaii is not requiring a vaccination. If you choose not to get vaccinated you can bypass a quarantine with a COVID pre-test.
Also, trust me when I tell you that Hawaii is not worried about getting enough tourists to come back. If you are bitter about Hawaii, an isolated island with limited medical facilities, trying to protect itself from a COVID outbreak, then please stay on the mainland.
Bryon B
What part of “not required” do you not understand. . The state of Hawaii has said it is not required. Don’t want to provide a shot recorded, then take a test.
Andrea B
Dear Bryon, thank you! Hawaii has stated vaccine not a requirement just an option. I’m planning my life long dream vacation trip to Oahu next year & I’m getting very excited♡♡ I can’t wait.:)
Karen K
For travel to Kauai now my understanding is to have a negative Covid test uploaded to Safe Travels within 72 hours of arriving. Is this still correct? Karen
Darleen L
How much does it cost to use Clear Health Pass? Who pays for it?
Sarah
So what is the point of not testing vaccinated people? They can still get covid and spread covid to others. It has not been proved that the vaccine prevents you from getting covid. I will vacation in places that don’t require testing. Hawaii is too expensive right now anyway.
Stephen H.
“…Governor Ige declined to approve…”
“…Lt. Gov. Green retracted his vaccination plan schedule…”
“…Hawaii Emergency Management Director Kenneth Hara appeared to take the reigns of Hawaii travel plans…”
Who’s in charge? Having an oh-so-weak governor is creating unnecessary confusion, annoyance, and anger.
“…Passports aren’t ready, according to the state leaders. In the interim, a photo of travelers’ vaccination cards will be required, according to Green. Those will be uploaded to the Hawaii Safe Travels website.” Yes, that makes a lot of sense…but, go to the Safe Travels site and try to figure out how to upload a copy of your vaccination card. There’s no mention of even the existence of such a card on that site (maybe I’m jummping the gun there, but shouldn’t that have been added as soon as the cards began to be issued?).
Bottom line: THIS is supposed to be an effective state government? HA!!!

Dearest Rob and Jeff.
Again, mahalo for your reporting and they way you keep it light and refreshing.

Thomas Sowell said “It is hard to imagine a more stupid or more dangerous way of making decisions than by putting those decisions in the hands of people who pay no price for being wrong”
I don’t know one of these bumbling fools overseeing the lockdown of the states economy who has ever owned a business!
Cut all state and local officials pay by 50% until the economy (tourism) opens up, and you will see the problems solved very quickly.
Shame on every one of the political hacks for the untold damage done to so many Hawaiians!
Lee S
Well–we’re both vaccinated, our adult kids here are vaccinated, our kids in Hawaii are vaccinated–so we’re coming in June, no matter what the Governor and his minions decide. The idea of delaying making a decision because some people might misplace their CDC cards is a real stretch. It seems to me if people don’t safeguard their cards, that’s their problem, not Hawaii’s. That may sound harsh, but really, stop with the “what if” scenarios, and make a decision so people can plan.
Mahalo to you for keeping us up to date on this comedy of errors. It must make you as crazy as it does your readers.
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Lee.
Thanks again. Yes, it sure does. We think that if it is hard for us to keep it all straight and find confirmation on official websites, what is it like for visitors.
Aloha.
J.T.
Lee,
You’re absolutely correct. State officials should have had a few plans in place ready to execute once they got the CDC’s guidelines. Instead, they continue to kick the can down the road with constant excuses and delays. Just goes to show how incompetent the government in Hawaii is. In the meantime, the State continues to suffer an economic disaster.
J.B.
So.. if I’m planning a trip from the mainland to Maui in May.. although I was vaccinated more than a month ago..
Under the current rules I will still be required to get a COVID test from an approved partner, within 72 hours of takeoff of the last leg of my flight to Maui.. and must make sure that negative test result is uploaded to Safe Travel Hawaii before I get on the plane..right?
And if Maui County imposes on-arrival testing I MIGHT be required to undergo a second test when I land on Maui.. even though I’ve been vaccinated. Or might not. Right?
Thanks for keeping us informed and sorting through the confusion. Health and safety of Hawaii’s citizens is of primary importance. Aloha!
Beat of Hawaii
Hi J.B.
Right for now, but Maui hasn’t announced exactly how it will work. So stay tuned for that first.

Interisland resident travelers have been held hostage for too long—end the expensive covid tests, and the oppressive; intimidating scrutiny at outer island airports and allow vaccinated residents to travel freely without restrictions between islands.

I arrive on the Big Island May 6th. I’ll have my vaccine cards with me and still plan on testing the Monday before we leave. It would be nice to save the testing $, but it’s ok. Hopefully when we come back in October we won’t have to test but I’m beginning to understand that nobody knows 🙂 Regardless, I’m excited. Aloha 🏝
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Jo.
B.I. plans to end testing by the end of April. Of course that could change. But best to assume testing will still be required before flying from the mainland. Yes, nobody knows is right.
Aloha.
Paul M
@BeatOfHawaii – the regulations that are in place are confusing enough, but the real culprits of mass confusion are the government officials from different islands and agencies who SPECULATE what the next changes might be and when the changes will be effective. You and your website are not to blame (you’re the messengers), you are the voices of clarity in the midst of government chaos!
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Paul.
Thanks. It is hard to feel like any voice of clarity in this situation. The lack of clear and consistent messaging from the counties and the state are challenging.
Aloha.
JO M
Thanks for the clarification. I thought just the second tests were ending not the first. That’s cutting things close for me, but I have a preferred testing lab in town with a quick turn around so even they change again I’m good. Thank you.
Tommy S
Clear as mud, I don’t really see a vaccine exemption if you still have to pre test
David B
“Last October, Governor Ige declined to approve a pilot program proffered by Kauai that to mandate trans-Pacific travelers have a second COVID-19 test after arrival. As a result, Kauai withdrew from the Safe Travel program entirely, approved by the governor. Go figure…”
Maybe I am misremembering, but didn’t Kawakami want to require 3 days quarantine before the second test? And also, I believe Kawakami wanted visitors to pay for it, but the county would pay for returning residents.
Anyway, Big Island suddenly gets sane. Good for them.

So for the Big Island, it refers to 2nd test? For a vaccinated traveler, are they still required a negative test 72 hours prior to arrival, or is the vaccination card sufficient for non-quarantened arrival or allowable entry on Big Island?
I’m ready to go, just want to double check.
Andy M
Looks like according to the article you have to have been fully vaccinated 14 days prior to travel.
MiKE M
Sorry, I misplaced my manners,
Thank for any guidance, although I do understand this is a “work in progress”
Thank you!
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Mike.
Yes at this time you still need an approved trusted partner test within 72 hours of departure from the mainland to Hawaii.
Scott
Don’t trust anything the State tells you right now. They can’t agree on anything.
Plan your HI vacation for Q4 2021 at the earliest.
Paulc
Nope! We are locked in for June 4-14 and I’ll swim if I have to to get there. I’m prepared to jump thru any hoop they put up
Jeff S
Thank you for keeping us updated on the news for Hawaii travel. Unfortunately, the news yesterday was more of the same. Basically, if there’s a hurdle to be thrown in front of those that have done the right things, the Hawaiian government will find a way to do it. Now they’re worried about lost cards. With some, there’s always a “what if”. We’ll wait for the “official” update they claim will come next week, but if it’s in line with what was said today, then Hawaii will be out for us. After saving for almost a decade to splurge on what we consider a very lavish vacation, two years in a row of being pushed off is enough to sour the Hawaiian mystique…too bad, always heard Hawaii was a nice place to visit and the Hawaiian people were extraordinarily welcoming and gracious.
Paulc
Jeff come on man. I’ve been put off for a year too but we are booked for ten glorious days on Oahu. I plan to spend my money as local as possible and I will jump they any hoop I have to ti get there. If you are willing and really want to go just do it my friend.
Amy J
Hello,
Just wondering if there has been any news? I thought an announcement was suppose to happen yesterday (Wednesday), but I didn’t hear of any updates either here or through the news. Any idea what happened? Thanks! I appreciate it. Also, I love this website you guys provide great information! 🙂
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Amy.
Gen. Hara said he would provide an update yesterday, and you’ve got it, there has been nothing thus far.
Aloha.
Tommy S
Waiting for vaccination passport approval before I book my trip, I live too far away from any trusted partners testing for that to work
Andrea B
Dear Tommy, that is exactly why I’m planning my life long dream vacation trip to Oahu next year!! My travel partner is saving $$ now. Hopefully next year things will be calmed down…lol!#
Tonya
I’m with Tommy S. I live too far on mainland from a trusted partner (a four-hour round trip to a trusted partner site three days before leaving doesn’t sound too fun) and the typical trip we take involves Hawai’i Island for four nights, Oahu for two nights then back to Hawai’i Island for 10 days. Three tests with two of them while *on* vacation and one needs to be taken while we’re off the grid in Puna area. Geesh, this is going to be too complicated. Keeping our October reservations at this point and crossing our fingers our vaccines (taken back in April) will still be accepted rather than testing…
Roy H
Yes, I watched Josh Green’s video two days ago. Green said he was working with Ige on a Vaccine passport. You will need to upload your CDC vaccine card to Hawaii Safe Travels. There’s a dropdown page you will also need to fill out. Clear Health Pass comes in and verifies the info on your Hawaii Safe Travels site. Green said he was hoping to have inter island up and running May 1st and trans pacific runnin June 1st. Surely hope this works.
Aloha Guys

Just changed to mid May for Hawaii residents and mainland mud to late June. Announcement next week (they said that before). Exhausting.
Jan
Truth. Its also discrimination. This whole thing stinks to high heaven. It has from the beginning.
CF
Yes

The Hawaiian people are very gracious and Hawaii is beautiful we’ve been a couple times we planned again last year but obviously had to change plans, now they throw this at us, it’s definitely over kill on the Mayors part! We have everything booked however might cancel and head on over to Cabo where they are welcoming without all the chaos.
Kris D
The state of Hawaii has only had s year to come up with a plan. They may come up with a plan in the next couple of years. The clowns can’t agree on anything.

Daniel,
Currently, there are no changes in the covid testing since October.
Aloha Roy
David S.,
What rental car company did you use?
I wouldn’t go through that much work to go on “vacation”. Only worth it if you are staying for a month. I doubt most people are.
Sarah,
Sorry to disappoint you, but Hawaii travel in April was around 70% of pre-COVID numbers. Even at 70%, some places are getting crowded again. Personally, I don’t find the hoops all that onerous, and well worth it in order for me to travel to Hawaii. Your mileage may vary, and that’s fine.
if it stays 70%, mainlanders should be able to get some available houses soon
Flew back to LAX from Maui last night. Kahului airport was so busy. Long lines through security and also on arriving visitors waiting to jump through the covid hoops. The tourists are back! I can’t imagine how the airports will be able to handle the summer crowds unless the governor takes immediate action.
The approved covid test sights are a scam – $175 each from Ventura plus $125 each in Hilo to fly interisland. Why can’t the free test sights be accepted?
Lastly, we had a wonderful trip, worth every hassle and expense.
I’m not sure people are not complaining. I know a family that just spent $160 PP for a family of four for the test prior to leaving San Diego. I understand why, just saying that is a lot of $$ on top of what you are already spending.
The Supreme Court For Covid-19.
Aloha.
Aloha BOH,
I just returned home from 4 days on Honolulu and 7 days in Princeville.
Hi KC.
Thanks so much for your recent trip report. Good to hear.
Aloha.
BOH said it all in the headline: Confusion Reigns. Thanks again to you guys for keeping us updated.
Hi Curtis.
Thanks. LOL.
At this point only an idiot would expect anything else…
CDC, “vaccinated travel is safe…” IGE, “oh that’s not the answer we were looking for”
Apparently Hawaii has a lot of idiots
Ditto that
Hawaii’s leaders from the top on down appear to be the most disorganized bunch of clowns on planet earth, so much so that it is not even close to being funny, just plain sad more appropriately sums it up.
As opposed to what desantis on Florida who by executive fiat has decided he alone is the dictator not allowing counties amd local municipalities to come up with their own rules? Dont like how Hawaii is doing it then just stay away
Funny anonymous! Was thinking the same thing.
Anonymous, odd how you call someone who is protecting the inalienable rights of others a dictator.
How is he protecting their inalienable rights? What by throwing caution to the wind and now Florida is coronavirus central.
Please elaborate on these inalienable rights he is supposedly protecting.
@Sean and @Kimberly T – no sense in engaging someone like Anonymouse and James B.
I’ll just keep on silently laughing and shaking my head every time they make one of their ridiculous statements.
And enjoying my freedom.
The way Hawaii is doing it is keeping good tourists away. Own a place, visit few times a year but no Aloha any more for any visitors.
So guess Kauai is off my list .. oh well
Did you read the article? Hawaii is not requiring you to get vaccinated. It is only being considered as an alternative to pre-testing for the COVID virus. Your choice, no penalty.
You don’t have to provide a vaccine card to travel. It’s completely voluntary. Don’t want to do it. Then just take the test. What’s with the outrage?
Take the test (3 days before travel). I, for one think the option of showing a valid vaccination card (and a stiff penalty for forgeries) is the best way to open Hawaii to full tourism again.
George, the state of Hawaii is only hoping not to contribute to the already dead half million plus dead people who praised from covid. You don’t need a vaccine card for travel to Hawaii.
Gee George. I’m soooo happy that you won’t be coming to our beautiful, safe state. Aloha also means goodbye.
I hope visitors will choose to go to Big Island instead of Maui. We are being overrun with tourists!
I hope most people don’t go to Hawaii at all. That way we could see people like you beg for people to come because your main source of income has left you high and dry!
Well your hope won’t happen because unlike you and others here there are the rest of us who love Hawaii and are willing to jump thru any hoop to get there why are you in this site anyway? Bye Felicia
In other words, our April 22nd arrival plans are unchanged. We have an appointment at Walgreens in NJ well within the 72-hour window and we have a photocopy of our CDC Vaccination Cards.
Finally a voice of reason. What we need is vaccinated flights to Hawaii
I agree completely, and they have not yet tied the J&J vaccine directly to the blood clots. Correlation does not prove causality. So just because someone get sick or does after getting the vaccine doesn’t mean that it’s the vaccine that caused it.
Agree with you 100%. Not proven it works.
Sorry for your issues.
So true.
Who is forcing you to get a vaccine? Answer no one. Should you? Absolutely but it’s not mandatory for anyone. So please just stop.
Pick one.
What if you’re wrong? The consequences would be tragic.
Reduce the symptoms, as in keep you off a ventilator and out of the morgue. Nothing over the counter will do that. Ask the 1/2 million dead if they would have preferred the vaccine.
Kimberly, Again you are ignoring the 1/2 million who have died. This isn’t just a flu, and so many people pretending that it is has meant that some of those 1/2 million died needlessly.
Vaccine Passports are Unconstitutional, especially since the CV19 Vaccines are NOT Approved by the FDA. Vaccines are only have Emergency Authorization.
Lmao ok
Did you read the article? Vaccination passports are not required. You can take a Covid test. There is so much misinformation out there (like this), so I appreciate the clear reporting and commentary by the operators of this blog.
Hi Matt.
Thanks for that, and for your first comment.
Aloha.
ok so when they are officially approved then what will your complaint be? The Supreme court has ruled any number of times that local state and federal officials are well within their rights to put down whatever rules and regulations needed to ” What does the phrase general welfare mean?
The concern of the government for the health, peace, morality, and safety of its citizens. Providing for the welfare of the general public is a basic goal of government. The preamble to the U.S. Constitution cites promotion of the general welfare as a primary reason for the creation of the Constitution.
Please get a copy of the constitution and read it and understand it.
Please… im still confused!
Thank you.
Hi Timmie.
If there’s something you think we or others can help with, just let us know.
Aloha.
After a year of nonsense and incompetence from the state of Hawaii it’s finally dawned on me what we’re dealing with. Remember the old Andy Griffith Show? Ige = Goober. Green = Barney. Hara = Gomer. Not an Andy in sight, unfortunately.
Funny. To me Florida Man = DeSatan = Alfred E. Newman (what me worry?, just like Donald) comes to mind.
Hi Gloria.
Yes you do at this time.
Aloha.
My family will not be returning to Hawaii as long as Hawaii requires proof of vaccination in order to practice free will.
What part of “not required” do you not understand. . The state of Hawaii has said it is not required. Don’t want to provide a shot recorded, then take a test.
Dear Bryon, thank you! Hawaii has stated vaccine not a requirement just an option. I’m planning my life long dream vacation trip to Oahu next year & I’m getting very excited♡♡ I can’t wait.:)
For travel to Kauai now my understanding is to have a negative Covid test uploaded to Safe Travels within 72 hours of arriving. Is this still correct? Karen
How much does it cost to use Clear Health Pass? Who pays for it?
So what is the point of not testing vaccinated people? They can still get covid and spread covid to others. It has not been proved that the vaccine prevents you from getting covid. I will vacation in places that don’t require testing. Hawaii is too expensive right now anyway.
That being said, I wish you guys could go to the Capital building and teach a course on being clear, concise, and coordinated to all of the political, and appointed “officials” involved. Because, DANG!!
Stay blessed everyone. “We’re gonna need a bigger boat”
Aloha 🌺
Hi Pam.
Thanks so much. Laughing with you about the light and refreshing part. What else can we do? It’s like reading a novel.
Aloha.
Hi Lee.
Thanks again. Yes, it sure does. We think that if it is hard for us to keep it all straight and find confirmation on official websites, what is it like for visitors.
Aloha.
Lee,
You’re absolutely correct. State officials should have had a few plans in place ready to execute once they got the CDC’s guidelines. Instead, they continue to kick the can down the road with constant excuses and delays. Just goes to show how incompetent the government in Hawaii is. In the meantime, the State continues to suffer an economic disaster.
So.. if I’m planning a trip from the mainland to Maui in May.. although I was vaccinated more than a month ago..
Aloha!
Hi J.B.
Right for now, but Maui hasn’t announced exactly how it will work. So stay tuned for that first.
Aloha.
Interisland resident travelers have been held hostage for too long—end the expensive covid tests, and the oppressive; intimidating scrutiny at outer island airports and allow vaccinated residents to travel freely without restrictions between islands.
Come on knock it off
I arrive on the Big Island May 6th. Aloha 🏝
Hi Jo.
B.I. plans to end testing by the end of April. Of course that could change. But best to assume testing will still be required before flying from the mainland. Yes, nobody knows is right.
Aloha.
Hi Paul.
Thanks. It is hard to feel like any voice of clarity in this situation. The lack of clear and consistent messaging from the counties and the state are challenging.
Aloha.
Thanks for the clarification. I thought just the second tests were ending not the first. That’s cutting things close for me, but I have a preferred testing lab in town with a quick turn around so even they change again I’m good. Thank you.
Clear as mud, I don’t really see a vaccine exemption if you still have to pre test
Hi David.
Yes thanks for that. You’re now quoted.
Aloha.
Another fail idea in a string of failures in Hawaii over the past two years.
Trollers gotta troll. Still can’t figure why you are here besides ti trash Hawaii at every turn
I get updates in my inbox. If i find the information unacceptable and confusing then i can only imagine what visitors and residents there must think. Anonymouse.
Easy solution to your condition. Uncheck to box requesting notifications.
SO you can’t handle anyone questioning the insane requirements? What happened to free speech?
So for the Big Island, it refers to 2nd test? For a vaccinated traveler, are they still required a negative test 72 hours prior to arrival, or is the vaccination card sufficient for non-quarantened arrival or allowable entry on Big Island?
I’m ready to go, just want to double check.
Looks like according to the article you have to have been fully vaccinated 14 days prior to travel.
Sorry, I misplaced my manners,
Thank for any guidance, although I do understand this is a “work in progress”
Thank you!
Hi Mike.
Yes at this time you still need an approved trusted partner test within 72 hours of departure from the mainland to Hawaii.
Don’t trust anything the State tells you right now. They can’t agree on anything.
Plan your HI vacation for Q4 2021 at the earliest.
Nope! We are locked in for June 4-14 and I’ll swim if I have to to get there. I’m prepared to jump thru any hoop they put up
Thank you for keeping us updated on the news for Hawaii travel.
Jeff come on man. I’ve been put off for a year too but we are booked for ten glorious days on Oahu. I plan to spend my money as local as possible and I will jump they any hoop I have to ti get there. If you are willing and really want to go just do it my friend.
Hello,
Just wondering if there has been any news? I thought an announcement was suppose to happen yesterday (Wednesday), but I didn’t hear of any updates either here or through the news. Any idea what happened? Thanks! I appreciate it. Also, I love this website you guys provide great information! 🙂
Hi Amy.
Gen. Hara said he would provide an update yesterday, and you’ve got it, there has been nothing thus far.
Aloha.
Waiting for vaccination passport approval before I book my trip, I live too far away from any trusted partners testing for that to work
Dear Tommy, that is exactly why I’m planning my life long dream vacation trip to Oahu next year!! My travel partner is saving $$ now. Hopefully next year things will be calmed down…lol!#
Exhausting.
Truth. Its also discrimination. This whole thing stinks to high heaven. It has from the beginning.
The state of Hawaii has only had s year to come up with a plan. They may come up with a plan in the next couple of years. The clowns can’t agree on anything.
