  1. Thanks for the update. I am assuming the vaccination card ok to enter HI would only be after the second shot has been given as the first shot only protects you up to 50% after 10 days and the second shot up to 90% after 10 days. Will the travelers who have proof they already had Covid but no vaccine shot still follow the pre flight testing protocol? What about people who cant get the vaccine at all due to severe allergic reactions or other health issues? how does the data base for airlines to access vaccine info on passengers not violate HIPAA regulations? So many questions still to be answered.

  2. All these changes. It just was more than we could deal with

We have cancelled our month in Hawaii next month!

Here’s to 2022…which will make it 3 years (our last trip was in 2019) before we see our condo again!

  3. Traveling February 10, 2021 to HNL from MCO to visit my son.
I have had my first covid vaccine January 10 & scheduled for my second Moderna vaccine February 7. Will I still be required to obtain a COVID-19 negative test, if so where & at what cost? If vaccine is sufficient, will the government issued vaccination card be proof enough? If not, please advise complete instructions. My flight is in 4 weeks, thank you,
    Scott D.

    1. Hi Scott.

Nothing has been announced officially yet by the state in terms of travel for those who have had a vaccination.

      Aloha.

  4. I cannot wait to get jabbed. It’s about time we turn the tideand kick this virus to the curb.

For those with conspiracy and privacy concerns, just don’t heaven to Hawaii until it’s all clear, whatever that means. Life’s too short to stress over this. BTW, if you use any free software nowadays, like gmail, Facebook, etc, your info is already out there, likely already in the dark web. You really should go worry about THAT. I am very familiar with information security, this is exactly one of the things what keeps me up at night.

  5. I just want my immunity passport. I got the negative test in November for Kona and a negative test yesterday for Maui… and a positive test in between for Christmas.

Hawaii should be like Iceland and consider me as good as vaccinated.

  6. Aloha and Mahalo for the updated information!
February 1st is around the corner and who knows what will happen by April 15, 2021??? Since our trip is scheduled for April 22-29, 2021, we are surely hoping that not only will be be double-vaccinated (we’re in NJ, group 1-C as we’re 61 with pre-existing conditions), but the rules for flying into California and Hawaii will change as more people are vaccinated and positive cases drop by mid-April. One can only hope!

  7. Aloha,
Is there any info on requirements for children? Obviously they cannot get the vaccine, but are they then required to have a negative test? Traveling to Maui this summer, hopefully this will all blow over by then!
    Mahalo!

      1. Thank you for the information. We can’t wait to go back and visit, and I completely understand trying to keep the islands safe. Some tourists are just too selfish. Love your newsletters!
        Mahalo

  8. Aloha! I made it back to Asia safely. Thanks for your help figuring things out!! Crazy times!! It would take a book to explain the crazy requirements, ignorance, quarantines, 5 tests, etc. that I encountered. Luckily my 4 grandchildren are adorable. When living overseas travel is necessary. Yes it was inconvenient. But I had the choice. Mandatory vaccinations are a loss of freedom to make choices over our bodies. I want to see people remain safe. I want to see our economy recover. As it stands the safety of these vaccines is in question. If you haven’t read about the deaths and side effects people have experienced recently, then you need to research further than Main Stream Media or Google. I am not against vaccines but they must prove that they are safe. I will not take one just because it is convenient. Making it a requirement to travel is the beginning of the end of our personal freedoms. This is more serious than convenience! Don’t acquiesce quickly!
For the sake of our children! Mahalo for allowing me to share my opinion.

    1. Hi Nancy.

Do you have plans to come back to Hawaii at any point soon? That sounded like one heck of a trip. Thanks for your nearly 50 comments.

      Aloha.

  9. I’ve vacationed in the islands many times, but I won’t see Hawaii again, if proof of vaccination is required. I refuse the vaccine. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Without proof of vaccination “papers” we will be subject to all kinds of restrictions. The era of the deep state is here. It has knocked on the door, criminals let it in and now it is trying to control us and take away our freedoms!! Stop watching mainstream media! Wake up America!

    1. We won’t miss you in Hawaii. Being anti-science will kill you! Do you wear a mask? My father had COVID the week of Thanksgiving and almost died. Does your family love you? Don’t be selfish!! This isn’t a political issue but a health issue. The facts are that the vaccine was being researched for 10 years as a treatment for SARS (remember SARS, Bird Flu, Ebola?) and was tweaked for COVID. It’s safe for 99% of the general population.

    2. Kinda reminds one of the old black and white movies where you had to ‘show your papers’ everywhere you went. Gives me the creeps.

  10. We’re already to visit in February, after finally finding an approved Covid testing site that will get results to us on timely basis. This was hard enough to guarantee we get to visit after planning for one year. Now we might have to get the vaccine when they’ve just reached the 1A group for the covid vaccine. Does Hawai’i not want visitor’s, because it seems they’re making it harder & harder. I hope not.

    1. You will soon be microchipped like a dog. All info, medical and otherwise will be in that scannable chip. No paper card to get lost

    2. Aloha Linda
Question…. where did you go to get your covid testing and did it cost money? I will be going to Maui on February 2. My daughter lives there. I’m running into all kinds of problems finding testing and the results within 72 hrs of travel. I’m flying out of Chicago to Seattle to Maui. CVS can’t guarantee results within 72hrs. I’m going to see what Walgreens says. Also was your test free or did you have to pay out of pocket. I’m told insurance won’t cover it because it’s for travel. The test could be several hundred dollars up front. Also which test is acceptable? Rapids to…. so many hurdles to go. Can you please give me advice? Thank you!

      1. Tammy T.

I responded to your question but forgot to mention, the only way I know it’s FREE is through Kaiser Permanente but you have to take test & then ask for reimbursement from Kaiser.
Again, hope you get to Hawai’i.

      1. Hello Yvonne,
When you read the “test won’t be required” I believe the person was talking specifically about residents on the “islands”.

The entire article is talking about REQUIRED Covid-19 Vaccine for those person traveling to the Hawaiian Islands, making it more difficult for people to visit since vaccine stages aren’t providing vaccines to just anyone at this moment in time. Plus, some people don’t want to take the vaccine.

  11. Finally! Proof of vaccination will be enough. The current card is issued by the CDC (not DOD) and has the dates, vaccine type and serial number as well as the place of vaccination. It’s a little large to fit in a wallet but folded it’s OK. I can’t believe how many people came to our clinic for the second shot and said “I lost my card”. Really?? Keep it. It’s like gold. Treat it as such and don’t lose it.

  12. I’m wondering how the vaccine passport will work for kids under 18, when they aren’t offering the vaccine to kids.

  13. So if I am not going to get the vaccine-for various existing health reasons- do I now have to say good bye to visiting the islands? Or will a negative test result be acceptable. It seems to me that within the last few years do much of the information we have been given is inaccurate initially or partially true etc.
I guess we will be waiting for herd immunity-if ever any official agency would agree to a standard definition. So sad today – we would have been walking the beach at Kitchens and enjoying a hot tub at Kauai Beach Resort – maybe next year.

      1. What do you call a Driver’s License then? Besides, unless even that “paper” is Gold Star Compliant, effective October 1, 2021, that won’t get you on an airplane either!

  14. Made reservations today from Phoenix to Lihue, directly.
Will have both doses of vaccine before travel date. There is NO way we will be quarantined for any amount of days.
Hawaii: get your act together! And do it SOON.
Beginning to think the $$$$$ we spend to stay a month can be easily applied to a different state with beaches!!

  15. Doesn’t mean he won’t shut things down again…. Just hope your not in the middle of a vacation so it’s ruined a d costly.

  16. So if we don’t get the vaccine we won’t have the freedom to travel? This is ridiculous 🙄 I’m hoping they still allow a negative test result for those that wish not to get the vaccine.

    1. Aloha Erica,

At this point they will be allowing travel to Hawaii without a vaccine, but with test in hand; however, who know how long that will be. The good thing (and the current reality) is that Hawaii can’t afford to risk the loss of capitol (at this point, at least) that would incur, if they insist people have to take the covid vaccine to visit the islands.

  17. I’m told fake vaccination cards are already available for purchase in the US, and good quality fake negative test results have been available for months now. Without use of a single central US Gov’t database to scan and verify, people waving either their Vaccination Cards or their Negative Test results still won’t mean too much in most places. As Hawaii uses testing partners, they likely have the best chance of catching any of those fake negative tests, but sadly I’m told that for $495 you can buy a neg test result that will get you on a plane to about anyplace else globally.

    1. Yes, fake vaccination cards will be a problem. And also apps like Commonpass. Do we really want the government and corporations know our health records? What is next? A chip in the arm? Please do not misunderstand me, I am not an anti-vaccine person. I get the flu vaccines annually and my child is fully vaccinated. I also take the virus very seriously. But I do not want to live in a world where there is no privacy left. I grew up in a country where the government had a file on every citizen. That is not a way of life. This is not only going to be a Hawaii travel issue, but a much broader one.

      1. This is also my concern, Niki S. Do not like the direction we are heading, possibly using COVID as an excuse to roll out these programs.

    2. So the vaccination is free. And it protects you. Why get a Fake? Get the Vaccination. What You can’t handle a sore arm for 24 hours? That’s it. For most people (and we vaccinate 500 a day) only a sore arm. A little more sore for the second shot.

      1. The same COVIDIOTS who refuse a vaccine because they don’t “know what’s in it” are just too happy to order food from fast food restaurant where nobody knows what’s inside the food, or eat a hot dog made with the worse parts of an animal (yes, I’ve seen what goes into a hot dog).

      2. And take a chance on long term side effects?
And lose the right to freedom of choice on what to do with our bodies??!!
No thanks. This vaccine may not be the magic bullet you think it is…but not my right to tell You what to do either.

  18. What a waste of time. Just because you get the shot doesn’t mean you can’t be a carrier. Just because I get a flu shot doesn’t mean I can’t get the flu. Not exactly sure how this makes things safer. No one knows how effective this will be (how many times do we get the flu shot and oops sorry only 10% effective). Not a big fan of being forced to get something that may cause me more harm than if I didn’t get it. Still have to wear a mask? How about just bubble wrapping everyone in their seat. So now we have the vaccination card, 3 day test and masks. This will be a mess. Just keep it the way it is, less confusion. having been a Hawaii resident for almost 20 years last thing needed is more complexity.

    1. Definitely would be the case for myself but to each their own. Interesting how I cannot create my own initial post on this site.

  19. I’m not getting vaccinated, and there are many who will not, but I have respect for those who do or who may disagree. So those who don’t will probably have to take another covid test before arriving, and that’s fine to me. I’d rather get covid than the vaccination that’s causing adverse in effects in some, albeit a tiny part of the population.

  20. Cancelled our March trip, and made new reservations for mid-June. Hope to be vaccinated during the coming weeks, and hope the “passport” plans will be firmly in place and working by that time. Really want to see our kids, and really don’t want to have to change our trip plans for the 4th time. What do you think the chances of that are?

Thank you BOH for keeping us up to date on the ever changing rules for travel to HI.

    1. Hi Lee.

It certainly seems likely that will be in place far before mid-June. From what we heard from the Lt. Gov. yesterday, at least.

      Aloha.

  21. My wife & I have had the 1st dose of the vaccines (we’re in medicine). We get the 2nd dose shortly and the will wait 2 weeks for full efficacy. We expect the acceptance of vaccines to roll out slowly but plan to be in Princeville in 6 weeks. I hope CommonPass has become more common soon.

    1. Thank you Jim for stating that you will wait the two weeks after your second dose for efficacy as all people should do. I would like to add that despite after this period, mask should still be used and social distancing and good hand washing be continued until herd immunity is acquired. Thank you to all our residents and tourist for practicing our state’s mandate. 😷

  22. Thanks! Now that the vaccine is coming out many people (who werent going to die) are now going to die cause of this, thats wonderful! Oh how nice it is to see a world filled with zombies taking their zombie medications!! Good for you, this world is doomed.

    1. Please people…please wake up to this madness of vaccines. We don’t need a vaccine for a virus that has a 99.97% recovery rate. This virus is totally manageable and treatable. You may not even get it.

    2. Please, Lashaya, try not to use unfounded hysteria as fact in your post. Zombies? Doomed? Anyway, mahalo to BOH for keeping us informed. Aloha!

    3. The vaccine hasn’t proven itself free of side effects, safe for all, or even it’s efficacy.
      Hold your horses people!!
There’s no proven panacea to COVID-19.
This rush to vaccinate is scary.
Aloha and mahalo Beat of Hawai’i. You guys are the best!!

  23. Mahalo. Although LT. Gov is going to work it out the pass for vaccinated people, where will Kauai’s crazy mayor with a bubble brain stand on vaccinated people. Will he go along or find a way to do more harm to his island.

  24. Thanks for this info. Do you have an official government source for this, other than quoting what he said? Is there a Hawai’i website that explains the vaccine passport? February 1st is coming up soon. And what about people who don’t vaccinate due to religious reasons? Will exemptions be accepted?

    1. Hi Renee. It was a Facebook video that he did. We do expect something more official at any point now. It will be vaccination, testing, or quarantine, and religious reasons won’t exempt you from one of those.

      Aloha.

  25. How about people who can prove antibodies and may not be able to access a vaccine by February? We have family coming to Kauai in February and they will not be able to access vaccine by then due to ages and the order Indiana gives access.

  26. Hi, my wife and I will have both doses of the vaccine before our planned trip in April. We have a 1.5 year old who will not have the vaccine. Do you know if we will still need to quarantine or if that info will be released in the update next week? Thank you!

    1. Hi Charles.

That will be fine. The current minimum age requirement for testing is 5 years.

      Aloha.

  27. I received my 1st dose 12/30/2020 and will not be scheduled for my second dose until 1/27/2021. I will be traveling to the mainland on 1/26/2021 and returning on 2/9/2021. Will I be able to return with just the one shot or should I try for the second dose while on the mainland.
    Thanking you in advance.

    1. Hi Dennis.

Good question. The state hasn’t provided any details yet of travel regulations for those who have had 1 or 2 vaccine doses. That should be forthcoming in the next week, hopefully, since it is planned to start early in February.

      Aloha.

    2. Second shot – the 27th (which takes an additional 2-3 weeks to gain efficacy)and books a flight one day before then (not having yet completed the vaccination process) and then wants to know if he can get his second shot in Hawaii? Well, I’d say its possible if the people giving them want to come to your hotel where you should be quarantining for the first full week of your visit? Jeez…

  28. Hi BOH,

First off, I want to say how your blogs and writing are well written, thoughtful, fair and allow all viewpoints to be expressed. I have much respect for your writing on your replies to blog comments. All are respectful.

I am a health care worker and am waiting for my lottery pick to be vaccinated – then it will take another 21 days (if Pfizer) to have my 2nd vaccine. No new updates since this original post on if we have to have wait 1 week after our 2nd dose to be able to come and be able to bypass the testing?

I commented on the most recent Kauai post, that I may have a new demanding job coming up in Feb, and wanted to go to Kauai ASAP, even if I have to do testing, but would love to bypass if on 2/1/21, I can.

    Warmly,
    Helen

    1. Hi Helen.

Thank you. Someone else just asked the same thing. Since Lt. Gov. Green stated that vaccine travel will take effect in early February, we hope to learn in the next week or so just what that means. There was no mention by him of one dose travel. Stay tuned.

      Aloha.

  29. So starting February 1
People from the mainland to Honolulu with the covid19 vaccine can avoid the 10 day quarantine
    Thank you

    1. Keep me updated if people with the covid19 vaccine be available to avoid the 10 day quarantine
      If it starts February 2021
      Thank you

  30. How is October 2021 for Hawaii
I hope tourists can go and avoid the 10 day quarantine with the covid19 vaccine

  31. Any suggestions/recommendations on getting the covid19 testing done with results in time for those that will be flying out on a Monday morning?
or When should they take the test to get the results in time for Monday morning flight to Ohau? Thank you for your time.

    1. Hi Sophan.

Where are you flying from? That’s one part. Also Vault says that you should not use their by-mail tests for Tuesday/Wedesday travel. So that option is good from anywhere in the US.

      Aloha.

  32. Nobody can mandate the vaccines without liability (meaning one cannot sue for the injury or the death caused by the vaccines). That’s against our constitution.

    42 U.S. Code § 300aa–22 – Standards of responsibility

    1. Nobody is mandating the vaccine. But if you choose to get one, you may be able to avoid some testing requirements in connection with travel.

    2. For me, it’s easy: avoid all the testing hassle by taking the vaccine. Our next trip includes some interisland travel, which requires _two_ tests, one for the Pacific travel and another one for the interisland travel. And if the interisland one is positive, there’s quarantine.

    3. Well for those who are ok with the vaccinations, we welcome the change, but for those who are against it then just do the 72 hour before your final leg in, and hope it comes back in time or you can spend $10,000 to sit in a room all day. I am excited to visit Hawaii and being in healthcare am happy to have had both shots with ZERO side effects

  33. I have a question about the Safe Travels site. It says you have to check in DAILY online. Really? So once you’ve jumped through all the hoops you still have to check in? Not that it would take long but I’d just as soon relax and not have to do yet something else.

    1. That is only if you are ordered to quarantine. There is no requirement to “check in” if you qualify to avoid quarantine or otherwise after you do your 10 days’ Hard Time.

      1. Who do these people think they are to order anyone to do anything? I did not give this government permission to be my boss. This entire covid-19 is nothing more than the NWO turning America into a communistic country and we Americans are not going to stand for it.

  34. Hello BOH, I read this morning that Kīlauea erupted last night. Do know what the impact on tourism of such eruptions was in the past?
