  1. I’m very late to this discussion. But I have a good friend who’s a captain at HA. He said the 8L rehabilitation is because it was in terrible condition. In fact, if you glance at a Jeppesen chart from 2022 or prior, it lists 8L as “Fair – Poor Condition.” That is likely the main reason for the reconstruction, not a handful of jumbo flights.

  2. Aloha, Hello! We always read your newsletter & appreciate your reporting. Never done this before, but wanted to let you know that my husband & I visited just recently via Southwest Airline, traveled inter island, & flew home Sunday, December 4, 2022 without incident & no delays. With the help of your website, we came prepared, got there early, loaded up on snacks, and all went well. It was so helpful to get your perspective, experience and advice & we had a great flying experience. Thanks for your updates.

  3. Aloha Beat of Hawai’i. Just a few things to point out from your story:

Runway 8R is open for all operations, arrivals and departures.

Runway 8L is open but is limited to departures only and those departures are small aircraft or 717s, 737s and similar aircraft with reduced loads.

8L and 8R, along with 4R can all handle CL VI aircraft. I have seen 744s 748s and A380s use all three. Maybe they are just improving what they had already but the only runways that those aircraft could not use were 4L, 4W/22W and 8W/26W.

  4. Hi guys, Well like you said, Avoid Honolulu at all cost. Fly nonstop to your island of choice. May cost a bit more but worth it in the long run. No headaches and waiting around when you could be lying on the beach with a cold one in your hand. Looks like it will be this way for quite awhile as we know how long construction and maintenance workers take to build/repair something. Hey I d take my time too if that was my job. Great pay, overtime, benefits and hangin’ loose in Hawaii. Sweet!!! Take care you two. Warmest regards as always.

  5. Tourism in Hawai’i revolves around the asian tourists…..which is a huge mistake! And it is horrible! They continue to cater to the Asian community who like during 9/11 and Covid19 were ghosts! Hawaii call themselves and International destination, yet, they probably mean, Asian International! And why is this? I believe this needs to change….

    1. Blatant asian racism needs to be called out. One of the many things that makes Hawaii truly special is the melting pot of people living and visiting here. Sadly, we have seen a downside to the recent explosion of mainland only tourism that has an ugly side to it. More people that want Hawaii to be just another mainland tourist destination like Florida or Las Vegas. I hope more people from around the world continue to discover Hawaii. The Aloha spirit doesn’t discriminate.
