One Kauai state park is closed, and another is taking its campground offline until spring 2027. For visitors who planned around Polihale or Kokee, that means two of the island’s most remote outdoor experiences now need a backup plan.
Visitors plan both day visits and overnight trips around these iconic Kauai parks, and those plans are often key to westside or canyon-focused visits. When both go offline at once, it forces a reset.
Polihale is the end of the road on Kauai’s west side and offers a long stretch of exquisite beach. But it takes effort to reach even in good conditions. You commit to the drive, deal with the rough access, and you are rewarded by something that feels completely removed from the rest of the island. Nothing else on Kauai even comes close.
Kokee is the highest elevation on Kauai that visitors can reach by car, with cooler air, canyon lookouts, popular hiking trails, and access to the island’s interior forest. The campground is how some people experience that part of the island overnight, away from the coast. Without that, the visit for some will change. It is still accessible to day visitors or those staying in cabins.
Polihale is closed with no timeline.
Polihale State Park and camping are closed until further notice due to mud and debris removal, according to Hawaii State Parks. There is no reopening date, and both visitors and residents tend to hope that such closures clear quickly once the weather improves, as it already has. That is not how this is playing out so far.
Access to Polihale is already limited under normal conditions. The final stretch requires driving several miles on an unpaved road that can get rough, potholed, and uneven. Most rental car agreements prohibit driving on unpaved roads entirely, regardless of conditions. Add storm damage, debris, and ongoing cleanup, and access becomes unrealistic.
Camping there is off the table, and facilities are not available. There is no clear indication of partial reopening or day-use access, and until something changes, this is a full stop for anyone who had Polihale on their Kauai vacation list.
Kokee campground will be offline for over a year.
Camping at Kokee State Park will close starting in May 2026 for campground improvements, with construction expected to run through spring 2027, according to the Division of State Parks. This is not a short maintenance closure. It removes the main overnight option in that area for a full year, covering summer, fall, and winter travel periods.
When we went to the camping reservation site, however, we could book a campsite at Kokee until July 23, 2026.
Visitors who have already secured camping permits need to contact the Department of Land and Natural Resources to determine refund or transfer options. Communication about closures and permits can be uneven, so confirm directly rather than assuming DLNR will handle anything automatically.
What you can do instead.
Day access to Kokee and Waimea Canyon remains unaffected. Salt Pond near Hanapepe offers oceanfront camping on the west side, but does not replace the remoteness or scale of Polihale. Another option is to reserve a Kokee State Park cabin.

Thanks for the heads up, BOH. Your posts are much appreciated. I’m planning my next trip to Kauai in the fall and will be bringing a friend who has never been to Hawaii. The #1 thing on my list of places to show her is my favorite beach, Polihale. 🙁 Hopefully it will be open by then. Please keep us updated. Mahalo nui.
DLNR told me 2 weeks ago that Polihale was opening in 2 weeks.
