  1. Also not a fan of SWA but this is indeed an industry that affects customers in a very personal way and management needs to keep planes flying. But that being said, MANDATORY overtime should come at a premium – say double pay and some realistic limit on those hours.

  2. Hey there. I usually appreciate the reporting here, but you are omitting a lot of pertinent information here. All Southwest employees are unionized, and mando is in the contract. There is no comparison between Rob’s retail experience and this because Southwest employees agree to the terms of the contract when they join the company. Also, the company arranges for employees to see a doctor if they require a doctor’s note. I’m sure it’s no fun when the holidays roll around, but employees work there and accept the contract of their own free will.

    1. John H. I had wondered if they were unionized but simply went with the story as written. I have worked where mandatory overtime was part of the culture, it was typically seasonal and didn’t last too long. It was Industry Wide and never lasted more than 6 or 8 weeks.

I’ve worked at jobs that had MANDO policies (not in aviation, but in health insurance call centers and it was usually 10-15 hrs/week, and voluntarily doing more was okay by them) and I came to the conclusion that, while the extra money help me immensely in funding my retirement funds, the cost to my health was not worth it in the end. If you’re demanding your employees work 80 hrs/week, you may soon find them coming to the same conclusions.

I’m a fan of SWA and have been for about 16 years – that said, I’m disappointed by the memo posted & sadly I’ve worked for employers just like this when I worked exclusively in the hospitality industry (restaurants & resorts). It sucks, big time, but honestly we all knew what we were getting into when we accepted the jobs. Of course the customer is the one that will feel the brunt (second only to the employees), and that’s not cool either. I support the employee side 100%, in 2022 (nearly 2023) no one should be treated this way, whether they signed up for it or not.

  5. Hmmm! I live in the Denver area; yes, it is frigid here, and yes, we are all expected to bundle up and go to work, from medical, railroad, highway, etc. We are expected to show a Dr note, (Urgent Care is always open if 1 can’t get to the regular Dr). Too many people are guilty of abusing the system.
    This report angers me. We All suffer something sometimes. Man up!!

  6. I’ve ridden SWA in the past, but 3 flights to complete a trans-con finished them with me. Best of luck to those working for them.

  7. Sorry, not a fan of Southwest. I don’t like the cattle herd approach of boarding. I want to be able to pick my seat in advance. For a short inter Island flight I might consider them, but certainly not to and from the mainland .
