  1. Aloha,

Hawaii car rental prices certainly border on gouging but I think you have misrepresented the percentage increase. In your example, the rental price went from $500 to $1, 249. That is a 150% increase, not 250%. Still extremely painful but not quite as bad as you described. I suggest your clarify for your readers.

    Mahalo,

    Gary C

    1. Hi Gary.

Thanks. We reworded that part to reflect that prices are now as much as 250% of what they were earlier in the crisis.

      Aloha.

  2. It is difficult to understand why people are so desperate to go to Hawaii right now. The islands aren’t going anywhere. Things will eventually settle down and this “new normal” will go back to the “old normal”. Try wait.

  3. Hello I enjoy reading your information about Hawaii. I am planning a September vacation and in April I booked a rental with Hertz thru Rental Cars of Hawaii. It is for 9 days at a total of $771. I was really bummed at the time but it looks golden right now. Have you heard of rental companies not honoring these prebooked contracts?
Keep up the good work and information.

    1. Hi Bill.

We have heard only a couple of times about reservations not being honored. I’m sure people will add to this if that was their experience. So we do assume, overall, that is not the case.

      Aloha.

  4. Thanks for the updated information on rentals. We had a family trip planned and paid for late May and early June with a great price on a car. I canceled our trip when the Covid rules kept changing with the tide. I had hoped to reschedule this fall, but if car rentals continue to be difficult and expensive I suspect I will continue to delay our trip. I will keep my eye on rentals and hope that more become available, if not I am sad to say our vacation dollars will go elsewhere again. Someday we will get back to Hawaii. Thanks again for your updates.

    1. Hi Tammy.

You’re most welcome and thank you for your many comments. We hope you can return again soon.

      Aloha.

  5. Greed rules with this pandemic crap. We see it in many things. Very sad the world gets this. It is totally greed. Nothing else.

  6. I remember years ago that there were a number of alternative rental car players, Tropical Rent-a-Car was one that comes to mind. Whatever happened to them? The big players better be careful; this is a perfect opportunity for a startup to fulfill a supply and pricing need. O’m guessing there will be new players in a year.

  7. Love your blog. Very helpful.
We leave for Honolulu next Monday with kids and grandkids. We have a minivan reservation for a week for $800 with Enterprise at an off airport site. This morning I checked to see if there were any better rates and wasn’t fully awake when I saw $750 on airport. I clicked through and saw that it was the daily rate and the total was over $5700. I laughed and felt lucky to have my cheap $800 rental which I have just reconfirmed. Thanks for all the good info.

    1. Hi Randy.

Thanks. That quite a difference $800 a day vs. $800 a week. Glad you got a relatively good rate and have a great time on Oahu.

      Aloha.

  8. We’re planning on a possible trip in January. Taking your suggestions I checked the rates from Costco and AARP.
    1/2 – 1/9 to ogg.
Costco was 427.00 total for a Maxima or similar
    AARP was 900.00 more!!!!
    Definitely do your homework.
    HUGE difference.
    Mahalo

  9. For my month long stay on Maui this summer, I got an full size thru Budget via Costco for $1,500 — I think I booked it back in March so I consider myself lucky!!!

    1. Dear Brian, I hope that you had a wonderful time in Hawaii on your vacation! 🏝 I’m planning my life long dream vacation trip to Oahu next year & I’m getting very excited & can’t wait♡♡ God bless you always….Psalms 91:11

    2. I made a reservation for three months next winter on the Big Island through Costco. Glad I did; the rates through Costco are now $2,500 higher than what I booked.

  10. We made car arrangement for 7 days with a reputable rental company at the Kona Airport several months ago at a reasonable rate for a trip in late August. Do you think the agency will honor the reservation?
