Today, United Airlines announced details of significant expansion from North America for this summer. So, where did Hawaii fit into the announcement? Let’s say in a big way.
The Hawaii-centric airline is adding “100 new flights to cities in the U.S. and Canada this summer.” See press release below. They’re focusing on “travelers wanting to get outdoors and explore scenic destinations…We know people want to get outdoors this summer, and United is making it easier than ever to get to fun destinations across North America.”
Canada and Alaska both ranked highly in United’s plans, indicating that’s where visitors will be heading from a variety of United’s North American hubs.
The only nonstop additions will be from Los Angeles and San Francisco.
While United flies to Hawaii, including Honolulu, Maui, Big Island, and Kauai, there is limited expansion to the islands. The company said, “United is adding ten new summer flights with service out of Los Angeles International Airport. The airline will add more flights to Hawaiian destinations like Honolulu and Kauai…”
Six United flights from Los Angeles to Honolulu, plus neighbor islands.
Los Angeles will get up to six daily nonstop flights to Honolulu this summer, whereas right now, there are typically three.
Kauai will see daily flights resumed from Los Angeles in May. Those are currently just once a week on Saturdays. And by summer, those will be twice daily.
Daily flights from Los Angeles to Kona will increase from daily to double daily this summer.
To Maui, the expansion is even more dramatic. The airline will triple its flights from Los Angeles to Maui this summer from one to three. That’s interesting given that their flight from Chicago to Maui will remain stuck at once weekly.
Six United Hawaii flights daily from San Francisco to Honolulu.
San Francisco will get one more nonstop to Honolulu this summer, bringing the total number of United nonstops to six.
San Francisco to Maui will get one more daily flight, bringing the total to three. There will be no additions to flights between San Francisco and either Kauai or Kona.
United’s summer Hawaii expansion far exceeds Hawaiian Airlines.
As we reported recently, bellwether Hawaiian Airlines will boost summer flights between Honolulu and Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Boston, Austin, and American Samoa. There were, however, no Hawaiian Airlines flights added to the neighbor islands of Big Island, Kauai, and Maui, as well as no added flights from other gateways, including San Diego, Long Beach, New York, Ontario, Phoenix, San Jose, Oakland, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle.
Domestically, Hawaiian Airlines will add a 4th daily LAX-HNL flight for summer. They’ll also increase Las Vegas from 4 flights weekly to daily. Boston will get one more flight, bringing it to five flights weekly, while Austin will get one more weekly, bringing that to 4 each week.
