Why 35% Off At Grand Hyatt Kauai Feels Like A Lot Less

The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa announced its 35th anniversary with a 35 percent discount on fall stays. At first glance, this seems like a chance to experience one of Kauai’s top luxury resorts for less. However, as with many Hawaiian resort promotions, the savings may not be as significant as they first appear.

Luxury hotels frequently use percentage-based discounts to make a deal sound better than it is. With high base rates, additional fees, and strict cancellation policies, this offer raises questions about whether it provides value. Looking beyond the advertised discount, here is what travelers should know before booking.

The 35th anniversary deal at Grand Hyatt Kauai.

The discount applies to reservations made over the next 35 days between March 1 and April 5, 2025, for stays between November 15 and December 20, 2025.

Guests booking through the resort’s website must select the “Kauai 35th Anniversary” rate, exclusive to World of Hyatt members (a free program to join). Non-members can still book the deal under the “35 Years of Aloha” rate.

While Hyatt presents this as an anniversary celebration, the timing of the discount is strategic. The travel period falls just before the peak holiday season, when Hawaii hotels typically need lower rates to attract guests. Many Kauai resorts offer seasonal discounts during this window, making the 35 percent off deal significantly less unique than it appears.

How much do guests really save?

As you’ll see on the chart below, the Kauai 35th Anniversary Rate for Hyatt members was $667 and for non-members $679 booking “35 Years of Aloha.” On further examination, when you select a rate to see policies, the $679 rate reduced the $55 daily resort fee to $35 while the $667 rate did not. World of Hyatt members would actually end up paying more.

Looking further, these two promotional rates compete with Book Now and Save 15%, which is $871 nightly and can be cancelled with at least 7 days notice before your stay. That is also the same cancellation as the standard nightly rate of $1015. So while the deal is 35% off the rack rate, it’s just 22% off the $871 rate and not quite the savings imagined with more restrictive cancel policy.

At least $1,100 in additional cost.

Hawaii’s accommodation taxes of 18%, there’s the $35-$55 nightly resort fee, and a $40 valet charge (although self-parking is free) that all together significantly increase the cost. These mandatory fees add up fast for a one-week stay before even considering food, activities, or additional charges like Anara Spa treatments.

The cancellation policy limits flexibility.

This deal also comes with strict cancellation terms that travelers should consider before booking. The “Kauai 35th Anniversary” rate requires a 50 percent deposit at the time of reservation. The full deposit is forfeited if a guest cancels within 30 days of arrival.

Many other hotels offer more flexible cancellation policies, allowing guests to cancel closer to their check-in date with a full refund. This strict policy adds risk, particularly for travelers whose plans are not finalized and may be traveling without trip insurance.

Architectural design and inspiration.

The Grand Hyatt Kauai opened in 1990 and was designed to reflect traditional Hawaiian architecture while incorporating modern luxury and eco-friendly elements. The vision behind the resort’s design was architect Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo (WATG), renowned for their world-class resort design expertise.

The resort’s design embraces Hawaiian cultural elements, blending seamlessly with the island’s lush landscapes. Some of the key design features include:

  • Low-Rise, Sprawling Layout – Unlike high-rise hotels in other destinations, the Grand Hyatt Kauai was built to flow with the natural topography, featuring open-air walkways, terraced gardens, and cascading water features.
  • Hawaiian Plantation-Style Aesthetic – The resort’s architecture draws inspiration from Hawaiian plantation-era homes, with open lanais (balconies), wooden accents, and tropical motifs.
  • Lush Tropical Gardens & Lagoon – The landscape was designed to reflect Kauai’s lush, tropical rainforest, featuring over 50 acres of gardens, koi ponds, waterfalls, and a saltwater lagoon.
  • Sustainability & Eco-Friendly Practices – In recent years, the resort has integrated solar panels, water conservation initiatives, and energy-efficient systems to reduce its environmental impact while preserving the island’s pristine beauty.

Is the Grand Hyatt Kauai worth it?

The Grand Hyatt Kauai is a highly rated resort with well-maintained grounds, a prime beachfront location on Shipwreck Beach, and extensive amenities. It can be a worthwhile splurge for those who enjoy spending most of their vacation on the property or with bucks to spare. The 45,000-square-foot Anara Spa is also included in the daily resort fee. Beat of Hawaii editors are former members of the Anara Spa and can attest to its good quality.

While the Grand Hyatt Kauai offers a luxurious experience, the 35 percent discount may not be the savings it promises, and 22% off feels more accurate. As with any travel promotion, examining different rates to calculate the true savings is a good idea.

  1. PSA – use your Hyatt or Chase Ultimate Reward points. Off-peak dates, which includes many of the dates in this promo, are 25,000 points/night. All in, no resort fees. Hyatt is upping the hotel category on 3/26/25, so off-peak rate will bump up to 35,000. We’ve got a couple nights booked in August for our first stay, looking forward to enjoying what sounds like an awesome property.

  2. We usually stay at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa a couple of nights every trip after two weeks at our Princeville timeshare. This is a beautiful resort like no other. We’ve come to know many of the staff through the years. However since Covid rates are now in the $1000 per night range most of the year. As a World of Hyatt member and credit card holder, I have found that using Hyatt points is one of the most valuable ways to reserve at this iconic aspirational property. You even avoid the $55 daily resort fee which is waved on all rewards stays and includes free self parking.

  3. I get really good rates for GHK through my travel agency that I own. It is one of my favorite properties to stay at and send clients to. This resort is one we get some of the best rates with the “in house promos”. I love your eye for detail and looking at all the added fees, to find the total rate- good job educating your readers!
