  1. We hope to make it back for a third early December visit to Princeville. We have to book our timeshare no earlier than 6 months out, so we still have a little time. I think we’re not alone in hoping and praying for better days for all of us.

    Mahalo and be well.

  2. Hello was in hawaii before this vi rus was still in China all was great then it moved out of China to the rest of world. It was like somebody added instant ahole to maui…people very rude so lost all thoughts of ever going back. All they want is the money.

    1. @Brad – you may be a bit harsh but yeah, the old time aloha seems to have taken a big hit. But that’s been going on slowly for a long time. On the other hand, Rhode Island is now stopping people from NY at the border. And Mexicans are trying to stop Americans from coming into Mexico to spread the vi rus. Can’t blame people for wanting to protect themselves, I guess.

  3. I do live here in Hawaii a place called paradise island, in order for Hawaii to be the first to recover, government should implement 5he strict possible laws for all the people of Hawaii to follow. Helping one another hand in hand we can do it and the government of Hawaii should help their constituents no matter what it is and help each and everyone the most possible they can be. Let’s help each other as a community of state of Hawaii, people, community leaders, and state of Hawaii let’s do it make Hawaii the first states to be the first to recover with every one’s help and determination. May God bless us I know we can do it.

  4. I have reservations to fly from Florida to Honolulu on April 25. I plan on changing plans as date gets nearer. I’m hoping to get to come in November or December. My daughter lives there and this will be my first trip there.

  5. We have a 2 week vacation set for October/Nov, I’m sure it will be fine by then. I ( we) all need something to look forward to!

  6. We volunteered to work at the Ironman Championship in October in Kailua-Kona. Still following the Ironman site to see if it is going to happen. Haven’t made flight reservations yet…

  7. We are coming to Hawaii in October 2020 so I think that should be plenty of time for everything to return to normal.

  8. Aloha,

Thank you for keeping us informed of everything going on!

We have a trip planned leaving May 15 on southwest Airlines from Phila to Kauai.
And returning on May 31 on Hawaiian Airlines from Honolulu to JFK
So far, these flights have not been cancelled.

If we do have to postpone our trip, we were thinking December or January but are concerned that the weather may not be as good as in May. or should we wait until May 2021?

    Thank you very much!
    Cathy

    1. @Cathy,
Every year can be different. Sometimes May is too hot, sometimes it rains too much, sometimes it’s perfect. Dec Jan is pretty nice – but more popular time to go, so rates are higher and maybe more crowded. It’s all good.

    2. HELLO,
Can you please tell me what is your opinion of rescheduling our May 2020 vacation to late December/early January or wait until May 2021? My concern is the weather and being able to swim in the ocean.

      Thank you,
      Cathy

      1. Hi Cathy.

Both are good, and they are different. December, from mid-month through early January is high season. Typically quite crowded and much more expensive. May is low season, set between spring break and summer. As far as weather goes, it is different from year to year, and so it is hard to say one is guaranteed to be better than the other. May is of course warmer and the days are longer.

        Aloha.

  9. We have condo reservations for the end of August. If this does not happen we will definitely reschedule when Hawaiian Air is in business again!

  10. It would be great to know “when?”. Kailua Kona under “stay home order” and without the tourists is no fun whatsoever. It is just simply dead, you can’t access your favorite beach spot without thinking twice, and you never knew how much life quality here really depended on your local coffee shop and all the friends there. That said…

Dr. Fauci also said, ‘You don’t make the timeline. The vi rus makes the timeline’. We just completed our first rounds of Covid testing; 200 people were tested in Kailua Kona, for example. But then we were told that we would not get the results FOR 2 ENTIRE WEEKS. They said something about having to send our test samples to state authorities in Honolulu first, and of having to coordinate with CDC. How crazy is that? No wonder we have only 5 “official” cases. We here on the Big Island have no idea how far this has spread in our communities. Making a timeline, under these conditions, seems kinda risky.

  11. We will be coming to Oahu, June 18th on Hawaiian Airlines staying at a Marriott Property. Hopefully, we can still come.

  12. We are scheduled to return home via SEA to LIH April 20 on Alaska Airlines. We are travelling with a large dog. I just called Alaska and they said our flight is not (as of yet) cancelled and right now they are expecting it to fly. Are they just lying to us? Do to the complications of flying with our dog we would like to know ahead of time. Anyone have any guidance?

    1. Alaska is still flying.
My husband commutes from cali every month normally Hawaiian airlines but is flying home In may with Alaska.
      You should be ok.

    2. I am sure you are stressed about the schedule and your dog. I would call the Vet that is planning on meeting you and your dog upon arrival and talk them about your situation. They might be able to offer some reassurance that all will be fine should your flight have to delayed. I think the most important thing is that you have all your other ducks in a row with your paperwork and they have all the paperwork in hand on their end.

  13. Our May 19 trip is cancelled. We were able to get our hotel credit and are waiting for Hawaiian Air to refund our fares.

We plan to travel to Maui in May 2021 – it will be our 40th wedding anniversary.

Looking forward to reading about life in Hawaii during the quar antine. Stay well.

Mahalo and much Aloha to you and all the wonderful people of Hawaii.

  14. We have a 2 week Oahu/Maui trip planned beginning May 30th. We plan to wait until the end of April to see whether we will be able to go or have to cancel. If we have to cancel, planning to reschedule for December.

  15. Have flights for Kauai and Hawaii for 6/6/2020 and 6/13/2020 that have not been cancelled and reservation that are still good. Al long as flights are not cancelled and Hawaii lifts the 14 day quar antine we will be there in June. Absolutely love Hawaii and come every couple years (6-13 people at a time!!). Aloha

  16. Hoping you and Rob and all Islanders remain healthy. “This, too, shall pass.” We have trip planned to B.I.in early 2021. Hoping all is well by then.

  17. We’re currently booked for travel from Houston to Maui on May 9th, so obviously, we will have to postpone. This article is the first place I’ve seen a date in writing. “Beat of Hawaii: Travel to Hawaii is now on hold at least through May 20.” Waaaahhhhh!

    1. Hi Liz.

Thanks for all your comments over the years! We know that Hawaiian did not pull that date out of a hat. It would appear to us that is the soonest possible that travel could resume. One thing for sure, when it opens safely, we will all be ready for it.

      Aloha.

  18. Trip planned to Maui planned for late April/early May. This week Southwest Airlines cancelled our departing flight, but I still have a return flight booked (strange). The Marriott property we are staying at called us yesterday to inform the hotel will be closed and will be cancelling our reservation. They mentioned they are taking reservations for arrivals arrival dates in mid/late May. Need to figure out how to get back later in the year.

  19. Hi We had flights and a very nice condo scheduled flight was May 1st. We have obviously had to put that off but as soon as these restrictions are off we are definitely planning to come! Hopefully it wont be that long! We have been looking forward to this trip to the islands for quite awhile now! This wont stop us from traveling!

  20. We are planning to come to the big island in November for the Kona Coffee Fest. The Hawaiian people are wonderful, and we can’t til this all passes. Aloha!

  21. We booked a trip to the Kohala Coast for late July. We visit Hawaii every year and hope beautiful Hawaii rebounds soon without too many cases of this virus.

Mahalo for your daily updates! I’m a long time reader but first time commenter.

  22. We still have standing reservations to fly out on June 7th for the Big Island. Praying everything is lifted by then and we can enjoy our two weeks in Paradise!

  23. Aloha.
I had booked to travel from Ireland to Hawai’i in May but between lockdowns here at home and various travel restrictions that trip will not happen. Never mind. It’s more important that people stay well. Nonetheless, I’m hoping to get to Paradise come September.
Mahalo for all the updates and warmest alohas to the peoples of the Islands and fellow travellers.

    1. We are hoping to travel to the Big Island in July for our 20th anniversary. We are already booked and ready we just need this virus to go away. If we have to postpone we will come as soon as we can. Hawaii is our relaxation.

  24. We plan to be in Kauai late Sept. to mid-Oct. We hope the people of Hawaii are able to push through these challenging times. I couldn’t think of a better place to stranded. Mahalo

  25. Aloha Beat of Hawaii!!! We canceled our three week trip for this June, but rebooked for November, and then again in June 2021. Mahalo for all you do! Stay safe!

  26. Our son had signed up to run the Honolulu Half Marathon on April 5th, but that was postponed until a later date. So we cancelled our trip which would have been our 10th time to Hawaii! We will return in the late fall since our credit on Hawaiian Airlines expires at the end of this year.

    Aloha!

  27. Here’s my only concern as a Hawaii resident, even though our vacation rental condo and our business will suffer. Fauci and other epidemiologists expect at least three waves of the pandemic before there is enough “herd immunity” and a viable vaccine. Unless there is mandatory test for ALL visitors at least 14 days prior to their arrival and screening upon arrival at departure and arrival airport locations, there is no way of knowing whether we are importing the infected.

    1. Well, sadly we will NEVER visit Hawaii again. Having been there MANY times over the last 40 years, we were extremely disappointed in the LACK of Aloha spirit when our virus-free cruise ship wanted to disembark. Yet, the Norwegian Jewel was allowed in after us with twice as many passengers. As far as we’re concerned, Hawaii can have it’s ownership back, that was sold by your ancestors, and stop receiving funds from the U.S. Aloha.

  28. We are booked for Oct 28th to Nov 11th had to cancel our trip for May, feel badly for the great staff at the Kaanapali Alii.

  29. We were supposed to fly over to HI on May 31st on SWA. I do not feel confident that this will happen. I’m not concerned about changing our air travel, but I am concerned that we will lose out on our timeshare week.

  30. My husband and I had just made an all expenses paid trip to Italy, Greece and Spain for September 2020 when this started to spread. Since then we have come to the conclusion that this trip will probably be rescheduled for 2021 and have discussed alternate plans such as Hawaii. It seems to be the perfect destination for us Californians. We hope that The USA, including the beautiful state of Hawaii, will rebound soon.
    .

  31. I think it will between 3-6 months. It could be irresponsible to resume too soon. We don’t want to repeat this! I hope to return to Kauai within the year-we come every year & stay for a month. We love her people

  32. I hope we will be allowed to travel in June. My twin grandsons live in Maui and they are sad I missed their 5th birthday.
