Will Hawaii Health Dept. Official Be Fired: Recommended Horse Wormer for Covid?

Things continue to get weirder here in Hawaii, although we honestly look to come around this curve again and are starting to see rays of light at the end of this second dark Covid tunnel.

The state health department’s senior medical advisor on Maui has recommended the primarily horse worming purposed drug Ivermectin and the anti-malarial hydroxychloroquine as treatments and for prevention for Covid, and as viable alternatives to vaccination.

The Hawaii senator from Maui, Rosalyn Baker, however, has asked that Dr. Lorrin Pang be fired or resign immediately. This is being brought to discussion on the state senate floor today. In addition, she has called for the revocation of his medical license as a result.

Baker said, “if he (Dr. Pang) is recommending that people take things that the FDA has said are potentially lethal if you ingest them, and that are not efficacious in treating Covid-19, then he should not be practicing medicine. He should not be representing the Department of Health. He should not be stationed in Maui.”

The chief of the Hawaii Department of Health, Dr. Libby Char, also castigated Pang and the Pono Coalition group he founded for perpetuating misinformation. Char didn’t go so far as to say he will be fired yet. She said last night, “The Pono Coalition for Informed Consent is spreading misinformation about these lifesaving vaccines. This is dangerous. The Coalition proliferates misinformation about the severity of the disease and the safety of the vaccines.”

Dr. Char emphasized that hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin should not be used to treat Covid-19 and that their use can cause serious harm.

Meanwhile, Dr. Pang confirmed to news sources that he does, in fact, support the drugs (Ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine) to treat and prevent Covid. However, he indicated that he doesn’t necessarily support all the views of his organization, which included claims that the vaccines can cause miscarriages.

This week, it is being reported that poison control centers nationally are receiving a huge uptick in ivermectin-related poisoning. However, it should be noted that the NIH is funding a trial of multiple drugs for the treatment of Covid, which does include ivermectin.

“You are not a horse. You are not a cow. Seriously y’all. Stop it.” — FDA Twitter.

https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/why-you-should-not-use-ivermectin-treat-or-prevent-covid-19. There are human uses for Ivermectin, but Covid is not among them. See this NIH study.

Lieutenant Governor Green.

Josh Green, MD, in a statement, indicated he is troubled by Pang. Green said, “I have deep concerns about what the Maui district health officer said… because we have to follow science and be supportive of science.”

  1. I prefer the politicians not getting into my medicine chest. Let the medical doctors explore viable treatments as they are the ones who should be giving us options. Good doctors explore ALL methods of prevention and treatment. Politicians should stick to what they do worst. Attempting to govern. If the doctor has an opinion, we are all big boys and girls and should be able to hear it and research it and (OMG) make a decision for ourselves. Like in the good old days when personal responsibility was esteemed and not chastised.

  2. Why isn’t Dr. Pang fired immediately? Why is this tolerated without swift and decisive action by those in power in Maui?

  3. Wow BOH! Well let me tell you my personal experience with HCQ. Both my husband and I were prescribed HCQ after testing positive with Covid. We are extremely grateful to have had a doctor prescribe HCQ to us which has been around for years. We both recovered within 2 weeks. We did not need to be hospitalized but could recover from home. Currently we have several friends taking either Ivermectin or HCQ for either prophylactic reasons or for treating Covid. Believe it or not, there are physicians all over the country prescribing either Ivermectin or HCQ as treatment for Covid with positive results and are being threatened and silenced over a treatment that is making people recover. This whole scenario you wrote about screams politics.

    1. I became skeptical of politicians and media as soon as they went against Hydroxychloroquine.

So the head of Maui Department of Health, with a long list of credentials far exceeding Green or Baker, offers more than just ” get vaxed or else” and he gets calls for his job.

Remember when getting 2nd opinions was considered a good thing? Not anymore. It’s all settled science..except.. get your booster at months now.

  4. Directly from the CDC website….” ivermectin should be administered together with a topical agent. Oral ivermectin (200µg/kg/dose) should be taken with food. Depending on infection severity, ivermectin should be taken in three doses (approximately days 1, 2, and 8), five doses (approximately days 1, 2, 8, 9, and 15), or seven doses (approximately days 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 22, and 29).”

This is a protocol for scabies. It Iis NOT harmful to humans in the right dose. If it helps with COVID (many studies have proven that) I say go for it! Big Pharm want’s to cash in folks. Ivermectin is relatively inexpensive and has been around for ages. The CDC even has protocols for it even though the FDA says stay away from it. Explain that! PS…I have been vaccinated and I will take Ivermectin to keep COVID away as the efficacy wears off, and if I get Covid, to minimize symptoms. It’s a choice folks. Choose to, or choose not to. I support your decision.

    1. Ummm…did you know that Ivermectin is produced by the Big Pharma company, Merck? Did you also know that Merck has come out with their own officially statement saying that their drug, Ivermectin, has NOT been proven to help treat COVID? Taken directly from their statement:

“It is important to note that, to-date, our analysis has identified:
      -No scientific basis for a potential therapeutic effect against COVID-19 from pre-clinical studies;

      -No meaningful evidence for clinical activity or clinical efficacy in patients with COVID-19 disease, and;

-A concerning lack of safety data in the majority of studies.”

  5. That’s funny, the fda tests on rats and other animals. I worked at Genentech and was in one of the testing buildings before. It’s horrific. You can hear animals scream sometimes and the smell is a punch in the face before even opening a door.
The fda itself is not moral or compassionate. Nor does it have integrity or sensibility. This must be understood.

There are many ways to skin a cat but most people are like the stereos echoing what is said into the mic (cdc/media/gov).

I’m not saying the vaccine is necessarily bad just very new and to jump on it with reckless abandon just shows people’s true colors of fear, need for control and desire for pleasure.
Their compassion disappears for the unvaccinated regardless of reasons.

It’s not something you can force upon another. Just the attempt shows the violent nature of people. That force has alienated a part of society and now we are in a bad situation.

Responsibility is how one responds not react. Don’t be a slave to your mind and make the right choice for yourself.

I will still be going to Hawaii early to mid October since prices dropped and got some sweet deals but if things look rough I don’t mind staying home either.

  6. Regardless of dosage or past usage, Covid is not a parasite, it is a virus. Seems as though this not an appropriate recommendation from a public health person and they should be relieved of their job.

    1. Many drugs are found to have applications not originally planned or researched for!
Rograine. Developed for high blood pressure and now used for hair loss
AZT. Developed for Leukemia and now treats AIDS
Tamoxifen. developed for anti fertility and now used for breast cancer
Iproniazidn. Developed for tuberculosis and found it effective for treating depression.
Cisplatin. Developed for E. coli now used for testicular and bladder cancer

The fact that it was not made as a “anti-viral” drug has no bearing on what it can possibly do.

      5
      1. There are many drugs that are may be classified for unlabeled uses but considered effective. I am a nurse and am well aware of this

    1. I mean, at first, this seems mildly comical. Until, you consider the latest push of the now “FDA approved COVID vaccine.” The smear job against those who now “have no excuse to get jabbed.” Yet, as it relates to my time in Hawai’i, look at the deep ties that the FDA has had with Monsanto. Now look at the bill that was passed by Maui County voters, while I lived there, in 2014….banning GMO crops until they were properly studied. Which, when Monsanto, who was always accustomed to being able to have their way with the islands(and who had spent untold amounts of money in an attempt to sway voters)lost and then cried foul in court, the then Maui mayor tucked tail and refused his responsibility(as leader of the county) to defend the implementation of said bill.
This isn’t the forum to type a treatise on what Monsanto is about. But, if anyone has actually lived in the islands, loved the islands, then you know.
And now the FDA is telling me to take this vaccine? Healthy?
      Nah. 🏃🏃🏃
      Sad comedy indeed. 😥

  7. Aloha guys.
This is a witch hunt. That drug has been used in humans for a long time at the correct dosage. Lots of people I respect have taken it safely as a treatment for covid. I don’t know if I would but….this is a knee jerk reaction…throw the baby out with the bath water. Do some research. you will find out like it did that is it not the horror that the media is proposing..it is how it is being used.
    Thanks

  8. Once again, here we go, politics over reality. Medical doctors no less arguing what is right and what is wrong. I applaud Dr Pang for his boldness in declaring his views. The fact that he did so, should have caused further, SERIOUS discussion about efficacy and FACTS on both perspectives. Instead Hawaii’s politicians are quick to condemn anything and anyone that contradicts their ‘opinions’. Make quick unjustifiable decisions that brings continued confusion, pain to Hawaii’s citizens and ohana ande visitors. Just goes to show how far we have come as a people and country not willing to argue points in a safe environment. I support Dr Pang’s view and THANK YOU for your courage.

If anyone should be removed it’s Gov. Ige!!!

  9. As noted in several comments below, allow one, rogue “medical professional” to spout anti-vax rhetoric, then recommend two dangerous drugs for humans as a palliative, and this sets off those who would recommend a drug when used by humans to treat parasites (lice, river blindness, etc.)

Ivermectin is not and never will be useful against a virus. Parasites – Viruses. Two totally different organisms.

Please not that even the BOH boys stated their reluctance to treat their horse with Ivermectin.

    1. The FDA will never Admit that it is useful to fight Covid. I have first-hand proof that it Does work. I’m disappointed that you think your only hope is big government and big Pharma pushing this vaccine as the Only way to combat and prevent Covid.

      2
      1. You should know that Ivermectin is as big a Big Pharma drug (Merck) as it gets. If Merck were interested in profit, don’t you think that they would be pushing their drug as a Covid treatment? Here’s what they said about Ivermectin:

        “No scientific basis for a potential therapeutic effect against COVID-19 from pre-clinical studies;

        No meaningful evidence for clinical activity or clinical efficacy in patients with COVID-19 disease, and;

A concerning lack of safety data in the majority of studies.

We do not believe that the data available support the safety and efficacy of ivermectin beyond the doses and populations indicated in the regulatory agency-approved prescribing information.

If you are also against taking a drug (mRNA or J&J) that was on EUA, why on god’s green earth would you go off-approval to take a drug intended to treat parasites?

So now, do you believe the company that produced the drug?

        1. its been off patent for decades. theres no money to be made by merck, the majority of it is manufactured in china and india and the pills sell for literally pennies

the vaxxes fetch upwards of $30 each

          1. So, now I assume that you must be Big Pharma expert, have inside information about which Big Pharma drug is profitable, how much the R&D recovery costs might be, what the margins for Big Pharma drugs say about which are profitable and which are not.

You seem to be responding to anything that makes your argument against getting vaccinated valid, no matter how twisted the pretzel.

  10. Aloha,

I love you guys and eagerly await each day’s BOH update. Many times they have helped me negotiate these crazy times while traveling back and forth from the mainland to our beloved Big Island home.

That’s why I am so disappointed to read today’s missive denigrating ivermectin as simply a “horse wormer”. Since I have read this same description on several highly-biased sites it is even more saddening.

Simply stating facts without getting political, ivermectin has been used by many, many millions of people (not horses) around the globe for decades as a safe, effective anti-parasitic drug. It is also a component of protocols recommended by highly decorated and respected physicians for other uses.

Certainly no one should use the veterinary version of this medication. I doubt that is what Dr. Pang is suggesting. Josh Green as an ER physician is no doubt capable of truly “following the science” so one must wonder….

    1
    1. Hi Mike.

We too look forward to you guys commenting. As you might know, BOH has a real mascot horse and we are cautious about even giving her Ivermectin. In any event, the reaction of multiple officials in the state, and the CDC statement on it in relation to Covid was clear and it is on that we are reporting. We know there are human uses for correct dosage of the drug as an anti-parasitic, rather than for this application. We added references to that in the post, as a result of your comment.

      Aloha.

    2. YES, YES YES!!

It is baffling to me how many people jump on the bandwagon and beat this guy up because they think he’s recommending the veterinary drug. They make it for humans too, people!!

      2
  11. Stop sensationalizing and labeling Ivermectin as only a Horse Dewormer. At the correct dose it has been used on humans for decades and is FDA approved for multiple treatments.

    2
    1. Thank you JM for the short and succinct and truthful explanation – Ivermectin has been used world over on humans – the FDA has approved it for use on humans – it is strange that now FDA is trying to ridicule its use – “thou dost protest too much” – Personally I applaud Pang for stepping up and giving alternatives( the best form of science by the way) – there is no “one way” in this particular ‘experiment’ – – there is much more than meets the eye here and we should be open to alternatives and other perspectives.

      1
      1. Science? Where is the peer-reviewed, or even prepublication of a study on the efficacy of ivermectin on Covid-19?

    2. I’ll stop sensationalizing as soon as comments like yours are finally put to bed> Once again to quote the FDA(for all to see in the story): “You are not a horse. You are not a cow. Seriously y’all. Stop it.” — FDA Twitter.

If you had actually completed your claim, you would have said that lower doses are used to treat worms, lice, and river blindness. It is used to treat PARASITES. It is not an anti-viral drug.

      1. That tweet was probably from some intern at the FDA. Do your own research. Google Ivermectin and Covid-19. You’ll find plenty of supporting evidence that it works. I know it works firsthand. My wife treated herself with it and felt much better within 90 minutes of taking it and was pretty much symptom-free after about 5 days. I took Ivermectin as a prophylactic and never got Covid. The key to it is getting the right dosage for your weight…which safe levels of Ivermectin can be found on mayoclinic.org.

        1. Read my comment regarding your earlier rant about “Big Pharma”. Tell all of us what Merck said about their own drug, Ivermectin, as a treatment for Covid. Please stop posting baseless, non-science supported, anecdotal comments about a drug with dangerous side effects when not used for its intended purpose.

  12. The problem is that people are self-administering ivermectin at doses suitable for horses. Normal dosage for humans is just fine. And evidence is piling up on the efficacy of ivermectin, with some 24 well-designed studies.

    1
    1. Millions of people world wide, have safely been administered a proven aid for deterring Sars2 CoV19. It’s free, effective, and at least in our country, EASY to find.

What could possibly be the inspiration to go down the ivermectin path?

(Edited – warning on not adhering to https://beatofhawaii.com/comment-policy/).

    2. Perhaps you don’t trust the FDA. Read the story.

Human dosage Ivermectin treats PARASITES. It never has been nor ever will be effective against a virus.

      1. Perhaps we don’t trust the FDA? You could say that. Even a cursory censored Google search will turn up countless examples of blunders by this compromised behemoth.

Pointing out the obvious, that a virus is not a parasite, proves nothing and does not preclude a compound working against both. As others have stated, in countries not burdened by censorship, corporate dominance and political complicity, this medication has been used successfully (at the right time with the right dosage).

        1. Then show me either your medical license or double blind studies that prove your point. You won’t be able to, and I doubt your medical credentials.

To illustrate the dangerous point of any medical person recommending horse parasitic medicine, your post and others could have influenced my immuno-compromised friend who went to our local clinic after contacted by her doctor that she had potentially been exposed to CV-19. There, citing the same point of this article about Pang, he prescribed Ivermectin. She was not even proven infected by the virus, and he was willing to expose her to disastrous results.

Please quit listening to the echo chamber that created injected bleach, ultraviolet light, Hydrocloroquine and Invermectin. If you have followed recent results from mostly the southern states, callers in Louisiana and Mississippi in particular have flooded the poison control hotlines, and doctors are begging people not to listen to these unfounded claims.

          1. James B

My husband and I were prescribed HCQ after testing positive for covid-19. We are forever grateful for the doctor who treated us. We recovered within 2 weeks, completely! My personal experience.

          2. And Lisa, I am thrilled that you and your husband recovered. Most, ~97-99% recover because their body’s immune response is stronger than the viral load. Just because there was a simultaneity between your diagnosis, taking HCQ, and your recovery, there is no way you nor your doctor can ascribed a causal relationship between HCQ and Covid recovery.

Please tell us. Were you/are you reluctant to take a now fully approved vaccine that has reams of research data about its efficacy? If so, then why are you so eager to take a dangerous medicine when used off-label and against FDA and CDC data?
