We have traveled to Hawaii 23 times. The prices are now going up ridiculously. We recently traveled to Mexico, a much cheaper alternative with less travel time. The weather is comparable to Kauai. We also get the impression that Kauain residents aren’t too fond of tourists any longer. Our future trips will be minimal due to the above.
One of the biggest differences between Hawaii and Mexico is that in Hawaii I’m not really concerned about being kidnaped. Mexico, not so much… the state department has issued a level 4: Do Not Travel warning for 4 Mexican sates for this exact problem. So, stick to the seriously tourist destinations, don’t drive cross country, and stick close to your resort and you should be fine vacationing in Mexico. If you don’t want to worry about any of that, pay the extra money and just go to Hawaii.
The rise in cost could do two things. The first being God willing it will deter the trashy(appearance, attitude, behavior)
people off flights. The second, if there is any good to the rise in cost, maybe families will do more stay-cations with their families at home! Hey one could hope.
The excuse the airline is using to rise costs we all know is garbage because I’m thinking they hope it will curb the amount of trashy people disrupting flights.
Just booked a trip using our Alaska Visa $99 yearly companion fare. This brought the ticket prices to $275 each from San Jose, CA to Kona. My daughter used a $200 voucher she received from Alaska when she had to sit on the tarmac for 3 hours due to a bomb threat at SFO which put her ticket to $200. Looking at the rental home and car prices was shocking. We are renting a home we rented before and it’s $100 more a night! Very slim pickings to choose from too as we are booking last minute. The car rental is at least double what we’ve paid before. We’ll be packing food in our one free checked bag from Alaska with the Alaska card. 🙂
There is no such thing as a tarmac at airports. Just saying. I’m surprised that she got a credit from Alaska due to a bomb threat not being any fault of their own.
You can google this: Tarmac refers to the area of an airport where airplanes taxi, or pull up to a gate, or head out to the runway. It’s the paved area of the runway.
And yes, Alaska gave my daughter a voucher because of an airport bomb threat and having to wait on the tarmac for 3 hours after landing.
Last August picked up our tickets round trip 4 people from the midwest less than 1200 total. Checked prices everyday and the dates that was the cheapest is what we took. Black friday picked up our hotel and restaurant gift cards. 1 week before take off got a great deal on car rental for 7 days. Once again we are planning our 2024 return. By watching the prices daily for airfare will etermine when we vacay.
We want to go and are hoping I come across a decent price. As it stands now, the airfares are no where near our budget and that’s without a hotel and rental care (We stay with Ohana.
You surely have that, Demand thing absolutely correct! We just returned from Kauai a few days ago. I have never seen so many people on the island as we had this last trip. This time of year is usually a slower time of year. It was impossible to get a dinner reservation most anywhere on the island. People must be making a dinner reservations a month before coming to the island. I counted over 200 people on the lawn in front of the Beach House.
I’m in Kauai and things couldn’t be better…
We are on the north side staying with family. Eat in or out, all has been great. No problems with locals or people in the stores. The sky is Not falling, at least here on north side. 🙂
The cost analysis presented here is of limited value b/c it is not specific particularly wrt time periods and the recent price increases in airfare. In other words, all these costs were incurred when ticket prices were lower, so they do not explain the airfare market at this time.
With the average jet fuel cost of $2.63 per gallon on flights To Hawaii, I’m thinking that the price of jet fuel cost on flights From Hawaii might be 20% more thanks to the Jones Act
This breakdown all makes sense in many ways and I, personally really appreciate it. It’s always been the same distance from the mainland to Hawaii and all the costs have been there. Different times, different economies, what cost us $2,000. for a two week vacation in paradise (airfare, hotel, rental car), may very well cost us close to or well over $12,000. now for the same amount of time. What cost me $14,000 for 3 weeks in 2018, cost me the same last year for 9 days last year in Maui, no car! Maybe they are trying to see what it’s like to be self sustained. Time to find a new favorite paradise perhaps.
Thank you for this information. Having relocated to Texas after being a Mauian for 43 years, I wondered why my son d his family can’t all come out to visit. This ga e me quite a bit to think about and I can help in the future. From mainland to Hawaii costs are fairly reasonable. Mahalo Nui Loa.
I visit my family every year on the Big Island from NY. I usually purchase R/T fare. This year I have done it with two O/W tickets for each leg of the trip. Hawaiian Air still has the most favorable deals for me, so that’s my go to carrier. It worked out to about the same $$ but was more convenient for me to use my Hawaiian Credit Card. As for a rental car, I utilize American Airlines points and secure a rental for about half the cost. I do stay with family for half the trip, but I indulge in a 4 to 5 night stay at The Grand Nani Loa, also utilizing points and very early booking for a rate about $500 off by doing so. Shopping at local small businesses and restaurants,is always on my list. See you in November.
The Big Island [of HawaII} has been of refuge of tourism all my life (51 years) because there are no beaches, sun never shines, taxes are way too high, rent a car that you’ll pay for the rest of your life, don’t even think about buying a timeshare. Honeymooners stick with Waikii, buy a shell lei.make it a keepsake.
The sun never shines on the Big Island? You must have spent your 51 years in Hilo! Kona has so much sunshine, it gets too dry sometimes. No beaches? Congratulations on those who kept them secret. One of the best beaches I have ever been to was on the Big Island, but since it’s hidden, I won’t tell …
Hawaiian airlines was down ( webside) for several days, so during that time I could not nook my first class flight. When the website was up and running again, the fare in first class I attempt to book had gone from $1250 to %2200. That seems crazy!! Van anuonevtrcyify this,?
Interesting that no one considers CEO pay or using subsidies to boost stocks, when calculating these kinds of inflation.
Here’s a few headlines
“Southwest Airlines’ CEO got 75% pay hike ahead of service meltdown”
“U.S. airlines reject lawmakers’ request to refrain from share buybacks”
My take is it is scary as an elderly individual that wants to visit one more time or so….I know itis a huge task to play the gamble game, but Im too old for that and rather than have to pay for refundable tickets at high price, will probably just not get to go. Im so darn sad.
Thank you. I thought I read on BOH that South West was having issues flying into Hawaii and to not use that airlines. I will rethink it after I do some Southwest research. Thank you.
You have my attention. I haven’t flown to Hawaii since last year. Now I’m curious to checkout what the prices are. All the expenses you mentioned are reasonable. It’s amazing the airlines flying to Hawaii were able to sell flights for $99. I often make purchases on board too. I always forget my air buds. I love the snacks Hawaiian Airlines sells and I love an extra glass of Koala Rum Punch. I was really cold in the cabin on a red eye so I bought a pillow and blanket set. I wonder how much money airlines make on in-flight purchases. Thank you for all the good information.
Don’t you know the fares are always high in August? They go down sometime around the last week-every year. Kids go back to school-summer vacation is over. This is nothing new. Not sure what the story is here.
Julie, I may be incorrect, but have been reading so much on BOH that airlines is one thing that will not be going down in 2023. they suggest purchase air, room, car in order. SInce Hawaiian Islands, and mostly Maui, are travel meccas, it is very unnerving to wait for last minute deals on airlines, etc. If I am wrong, please correct me on this. But please show me where you are getting your information for year 2023 prediction of fares. thanks
Hawaiian Airlines also got rid of their low price search link from their website. I always used it to adjust my schedule to get the lowest fares, but now itgone.
Aloha! Five words: You Can’t Drive to Hawaii. That leaves two options – sail or fly. Fares never should have been $99 each way to/from the mainland, sorry. You are very lucky anytime you can score a roundtrip for less than $800. Do I believe there should be special discounts for locals or those mainlanders who must commute on a regular basis, or students, or military? Definitely! But for the mainland tourist or business traveler? You Can’t Drive to Hawaii. Expect to pay a premium for a premium destination. Enough said, Mahalos!
Excellent cost analysis, thanks. We have an upcoming flight from Seattle to Maui. The first booking we tried to make was $999. My friend asked if that was round trip. I had to check–it was one way! Of course we had to change the dates we were planning.
I just spoke with my travel agent this morning concerning making reservations for a trip to Greece and she told me the airfares are just through the roof! To fly business class from the West Coast on the mainland to Greece round-trip, $11,000 total. No way are we going to spend that much money on a 10 day trip. Notified our travel agent to cancel our trip. It’s happening everywhere! And three weeks ago we were in Miami and spent two nights in Key West. The least expensive main stream nice hotel, Marriott courtyard, not modern and not on the ocean was $700 per night. the comment from the travel agent is, her business is through the roof, people are booking everything, and she sees no let up in prices!
So true. But what we suggested works. One of us wanted to go to Europe in August. From Hawaii. Business class was $12k. Watch, wait, track multiple airports in each end, keep checking, and a round trip, all lie-flat, in ual business popped up for $2,500. No joke.
Supply and demand. Supply and demand. Nothing more and nothing less. I’ll bet they go down after the summer season… and then go back up for Christmas, etc.
car rental strategy – Continuously, continuously check again. Costco provides 1 additional driver free so it is my go to. About 2.5 months ago my 12 day rental price was 1300+, I continue to check – last week it was 650, today it is 520. I have probably made 10 reservations and mostly cancelled them. It takes minutes (but no upfront money) but the price is now less than 1/2.
Every few days it comes down. I have done this for years and yes, it still works. Will it get into the 4’s for me (an economy was $495)? Time will tell. I usually check in the morning (8-10am PDT).
A little local place called lucky owl car rental… my son rented a nice large car ( for his surfboard) for 2 weeks $400! Pick up and drops you off at the airport.
Ouch, so glad we made as many trips as we did from 2001 until 2019, we left Maui on the day in March 2019 when everything began shutting down.
Just for fun: our 2001 trip was about $ 5,000 total, that included 2 round trip air, rental car, 7 days at Lahaina shores, and $ 1000 each spending money for all food and, activities and souvenirs, which we came home with some:)
Ahh, the good old days.
Mahalo for all the information we put out:)
Nothing shutdown in March 2019 on Maui. What DID shutdown a few months earlier was tourism from China, as the CCP restricted travel, and that hurt the tour companies catering to Chinese tourists.
You probably meant March 2020, and shutdown did occur then.
The cost of good sold is completely irrelevant to pricing these days. So saying cost of jet fuel and cost of this has anything to do with pricing, it’s just not correct. That’s why we pay $45 for a 75 cent Apple charging cord.
The other part you said is completely correct. Supply and demand. Businesses will continue to raise rates until demand softens. And they find that sweet spot where they keep their planes full, at maximum charge.
To be honest, I’ve been very surprised on how cheap flights have been…
You know I love @BOH, but this article has some interesting facets to it that I’d like to understand better. For example, you state that “Escalating personnel costs are the next biggest airline cost.” Then go on to say “Some have said these extreme raises are not sustainable in the long run”. First who are these “some” you’ referring to? It’s helpful to know who’s making that statement. Next you refer to the Hawaiian pilots raises as an example and point out that top pilots CAN earn up to $448/hour without naming on average how many hours these top pilots actually work. Bottom line is that the pilots negotiated a 32.9% pay raise spread over 4 years. That’s only 8.23% per year. That’s just a few % over the yearly inflation rate.
Flights to/from Hawaii are still the lowest you’ll find between major cities over 750 miles. It is still less expensive to fly round trip from San Diego to Lihue than San Diego to Portland, Seattle, Austin. We’ve been spoiled and now expect low prices all the time. Summer travel has always been more expensive to the islands as well. And then you have inflation with increasing costs. I am surprised you failed to mention what is behind driving these wage increases. It is not the unions or employees in as much as our current administration. You are correct that those $99 fares are gone for good.
Honestly, I’m still a fan of Southwest. I’ve used them several times, and before purchasing an airline ticket, you can add other items, like hotel and car rental, at a discount. It allows you to plan your entire trip while you view and adjust the costs according to the hotel and rental car variables. It came in quite handy for our honeymoon last year, as we got a great deal on our entire vacation package. Plus, we got rewards points for everything.
We all know prices are going up for everything I don’t mind paying the percentage of what everything else is going up for. I just don’t want to be overly charged. Many of the items you mentioned above have been caused by the vaccines in the shortage of Pilots so they had to pay a lot more money. I will start looking everyday now for fares for next march which is what I usually do anyway. Can you tell me if the 90-day minimum stay for condos in parts of Honolulu went into effect on April 23rd? Thank you
They say the quickest way to make a million dollars in aviation is start with 2 million…it is an expensive, rough, competitive industry very sensitive to the economy and fuel prices. Inflation and interest rates hit hard, they lease often, supply chain issues and so much more as well as 2 years of losing money during COVID with travel fears and restrictions. Lodging is still the most expensive cost I see travelling, by a lot. I have noticed hotel service dropped when I had to travel work during COVID…no cleaning service, no breakfast, etc. but the prices did not reflect a drop in service, prices increased, and then after COVID many still say they don’t service the room unless requested….so higher price, less service in lodging.
The price of airfares is insane!! I’m bringing my daughter and her boyfriend down here for Christmas and it’s gonna cost me almost $2400 just for airfare for the both of them!! That’s absurd! Thankfully their staying with us so no need for hotel!
I don’t think it is fair to point the finger at airlines being ‘greedy’. We are coming to Maui later in the month and the room rates are Shocking. Almost to the point that we canceled our trip to Hawaii. We can use the credit to fly somewhere more reasonable. Room rates were north of $500 a night – not including an Obsene resort fee And paid parking. AirBNB was just as bad, with deceptively low rates that only double with cleaning fees as high as $600 in addition to all their other ‘fees’. Hawaii used to be a great escape from the West Coast, but it appears it is only accessible to the wealthy these days.
We have traveled to Hawaii 23 times. The prices are now going up ridiculously. We recently traveled to Mexico, a much cheaper alternative with less travel time. although anyone who compares Mexico to Hawaii should probably go to Mexico!

Tarmac? Runway? Stuck on the plane. All the same when it comes to compensation

Interesting info about airplane costs. As for Hawaii it is very beautiful but overpriced and overrated and overrun by tourism.
We want to go and are hoping I come across a decent price. As it stands now, the airfares are no where near our budget and that’s without a hotel and rental care (We stay with Ohana.
Maybe all this has to do with how the country is being run? Last time we made it to Hawaii was 2018…man those were the good ol days eh?
Hmmmm… somehow airfares have now become political?

Thanks for the tip about using miles for car rental. I didn’t think of that!
Its very simple.
Don’t Fly First Class unless you can afford it.
If you are having to price shop a trip then you should not be flying first class.
We never fly first class because we cant afford it. Like other things we do in life it comes down to compromises.
You neglected to mention that Southwest Airlines never charges a change fee and if you cancel, you have one year to use the funds.
The old policy was Southwest Airlines flight credits expired after one year.
Southwest Airlines announced on July 28, 2022, they were removing flight credit expiration dates.
(Google search for “Introducing Flight Credits that Don’t Expire”)
I believe the credit on Southwest does not expire.

Hi Sandi.
If you can get refundable at 10-15% extra, that seems very reasonable. And as Dan
pointed out (although they aren’t refundable), SWA tix are reusable.
Aloha.

Aircraft cost, fuel, maintenance, labor, and incidentals like snacks etc.
Labor cost have shot up from ground staff to pilots

Hi Joerg.
Thanks for so many comments. We really appreciate it! Journalistically speaking we sometimes choose to quote and/or link and other times not. One of the first articles we saw on this was this one. https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/why-us-airline-pilot-wages-are-outpacing-global-rises-2022-12-05/. There have been many others since then if you choose to Google that.
Aloha.
I am neither surprised nor outraged. It’s not that air travel is becoming over-priced; it’s that air travel used to be under-priced.
Thank you
Hi Linda.
Thanks.V we don’t know yet what will happen yet with the 30 day condos becoming 90 days minimum.
Aloha.
