What do you think about the new aircraft boarding policies rolled out by Hawaiian Airlines? Gone are the days of boarding coach from back of the “bus” on the shorter inter-island flights. This often created a bottleneck at the boarding gates. Yes, I have been known to attempt to board before my row was called in order to be able to find overhead storage.
This new system differentiates between their most premium Platinum passengers and the remaining frequent flyer and premium seat passengers. Platinum passengers have seen benefits like free upgrades erode and this will help provide an additional level of complementary service.
Now all coach passengers on inter-island flights board as a group no matter what row. I like that idea. Let’s see how it plays out at the boarding gate with everyone trying to be first through the doors. On all other flights (mainland and international) there will be three physical zones for coach passengers depending on seat location.

Hawaiian Airlines Flights Inter-Island (3 zones)
- Those passengers needing special assistance.
- Zone 1 passengers including first class, Pualani Platinum, and uniformed military.
- Zone 2 passengers including Pualani Gold, Premier Club and those with purchased premium seating.
- Zone 3 passengers: all remaining passengers.
All other flights on Hawaiian Airlines (5 zones)
For mainland and overseas flights, there will be five zones:
- Those passengers needing special assistance.
- Zone 1 passengers including first class, Pualani Platinum, and uniformed military.
- Zone 2 passengers including Pualani Gold, Premier Club and those with purchased premium seating.
- Zone 3 passengers: rear section of the aircraft.
- Zone 4 passengers: middle section of the aircraft.
- Zone 5 passengers: rear section of the aircraft.
