  1. I’m an occasional Kauai tourist who loves the island, and I was intrigued by the discussion. I like all the different ideas.
    My thoughts as an observer

    * The decision for a resort was made in the 1950’s. Changing that means buying out the owner.
    * It’s been 30 years and there hasn’t been a local organization who can acquire it. More time won’t help
    * What land on Hawaii does not have history or cultural significance?
    * If it becomes a cultural center, who pays for security and maintenance? If you charged people to visit, that would take more visitors than a hotel.
    * Kauai county could have the resort fund enhancements to roads/beaches and maintain some cultural center as part of the deal.
    Seems like the least-worst option

    1. Agreed! I live on Maui and have not been to Kauai in 20 years, but from what I understand, the current structure is an eye sore. Integration with local culture will be the key to success. That was what attracted me to Hawaii in the 1st place, also their efficiency to rebuild after the hurricane (vs the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico). We should all work together to preserve the good and improve the bad.

  2. We have stayed at Coco Palms. We always felt like it was a very special place that respected the grounds it was built on. Hope the new hotel also respects the land. The torch lighting seemed almost spiritual. We will be one of the first guests when it reopens. Loved this spot of paradise. Hope they also keep the shell sinks.

  3. Who are these commenters saying they’re glad it will be redeveloped? Obviously not Kauai residents. To all of us who live here, it’s so clear that this is a terrible idea, environmentally, culturally, esthetically, and even financially for the developers.

  4. The tax base will swell and help the infrastructure of the state. The result? Stronger Police and Fire, and better hospitals/city services.

  5. Delighted they are rebuilding this hotel for so many reasons, notwithstanding the eyesore it is when traveling past it.Its a beautiful island, a great location, and will help the entire area economically once complete. Certain the city planners will come up with a plan to alleviate congestion that already exists and the local residents will benefit. Tourism after all is the backbone of the islands. Mahalo!

I am so glad to see you fixing the CoCo palm again. I go by it every year. I will be one of the first to get a room.!!

I remember it had even a zoo
And we stayed in a Bungalow I think it was called that and I remember we went on a rsft down a little river on the grounds like the one Elvis was on in his movie. Thank You For fixing such a Beautiful place.

  7. I feel that we don’t need any more hotels, almost 72, born and raised here. I would like to see a move to help the much needed families and really “true blue” affordable housing…our Hawaiian people have given alot for all the tourist, how about a cultural center for us, too??? Amene‼️
