  1. Mayor Blangiardi’s asking people and businesses to “take personal responsibility” sounds really nice, but there are too many lolo people and businesses who won’t follow guidelines.

    1. I surmise that infection rates will rise significantly after the holidays due to all the family/friend gatherings. I’m not optimistic that all those parties were outdoors and that masks were worn. Just a guess but when folks ar asked to be on the honor system, things fall through the cracks. I expect more go government sanctions as a result. Makes vacay planning difficult.

      2
  2. So a county mayor now has the authority to determine what the definition of a medical situation!? Well, that makes my travel plans a very easy decision because I will never get one of their so called boosters that have not, just like the original vaccines, proven to stop nothing!!

    1. You obviously don’t understand the science of any of this. They are trying to prevent more hospitalizations. The vaccines work especially if you are boosted. Get educated before you put in your opinion.

      23
      1. Kathy S please don’t degrade Don. He is speaking the truth. The vaccine is not effective against the Omicron variant… That is the science. It does seem to be effective (although efficacy seems to be limited to 6 months) against the Delta variant…that is ALSO science. So you are both right depending on how you interpret the science.

        16
        1. I could repeat the comment below about science, but (sigh.) must once again correct those who don’t actually bother to keep up. A boosted and vaxed person can still get CV-19 (whichever variant you prefer), but early data shows that a boosted mRna individual has an efficacy rate of ~70% against any of the variants, including Omicron. What this means is the likelihood of hospitalization is 30%, with those with underlying conditions the most likely among that group. Unvaxed = zero protection.

      1. Brain Surgery is Science.. Airplanes flying is Science….

Covid and the CDC is the scientific method. Hypothesis, followed by experiment and result. Only in this nonsense the hypothesis and experiments affect our daily lives.

        4
        1. All you mentioned follow the same pattern (hypothesis, testing, verification). Only after years of verification can any of those you deemed scientific be deemed a law.

  3. Hospitalizations up 100%. What is that, from 2 to 4? 2 to 4 is 100%. See how easy it is to manipulate ‘facts’. Someone should read/edit these things critically. That way they would be more useful to the reader.

    1. When the raw number sounds really high, state the raw number. When the raw number is not alarming enough, state the percentage change.

According to the HI-EMA, a/o Dec 28, there were 127 people hospitalized with COVID statewide, 18 of which in ICU beds. Given the number of positive tests the last several week, not alarming numbers. The peak this past summer was ~500 hospitalized and ~100 in ICU.

The honest answer is that we don’t know, but we’ll find out.

  4. Aloha,it saddens me that after all these years of saving and fiy getting the kids out of the house, we began an annual trek to Hawaii, for ten years we enjoyed the islands’ hospitality, dun and adventure, but it seems that has ended now. We feel sorry for those affected and effected by COVID, we feel sorry that so much hype is being made over each new variant with little or any actual science behind claims and accusations. Mahalo for the good times past.

    24
    1. On Dec. 13, just 34 people were hospitalized with COVID statewide.

On Monday, that number stood at 100 ― and the Healthcare Association of Hawaii confirms 34 are vaccinated. At least 88 COVID patients, meanwhile, are on Oahu.

CNN) A five-fold increase in pediatric admissions in New York City this month. Close to double the numbers admitted in Washington, DC. And nationwide, on average, pediatric hospitalizations are up 48% in just the past week.

      3
      1. We heard that if a child shows up at the ER with a broken arm or anything else and tests positive for Covid – then he/she is counted as a ‘Covid Case’ – :0(

        4
    2. NBA, NFL & NHL games are being delayed & rescheduled. Flights are being cancelled. Directing your comments at Hawaii is misplaced.

      7
  5. It makes no sense- the vaccinations don’t protect or keep people safe. Why would another shot be any different? Think about it- stop listening to the premeditated story that hypes fear. Use your mind, be smart, think for yourself.

    32
    1. From the CDC:
Vaccination can make illness less severe in people who get vaccinated but still get sick. Fully vaccinated people are also much less likely to be hospitalized or die than people with similar risk factors who are not vaccinated.

Science doesn’t care what you believe.

      16
    2. Jennifer, what you are saying is simply not true. Yes vaccinated people can get infected, but are less likely to and if they do they are far less likely to die. Healthy fully vaccinated people are not dying, The deaths are primarily the unvaccinated. Been proven time and time again. Be smart and listen to all the experts who have access to the actual data. Then make up your mind.

      2
  6. The CDC just changed their National numbers on percentage of total cases for Omicron from 73 to 23%. Have Hawaiian leaders checked the percentage change for Hawaii? They shynefore making changes.

    19
    1. The CDC just also stated they will no longer use the PCR test after December 31st because it can’t differentiate between Covid and Flu. I thought they could tell the difference but this is according to CDC…so who knows what to believe anymore.

      6
      1. There has been very ample data since the beginning of this mess stating a PCR test cannot and does not differentiate between SARS-Cov19 & an influenza strain. And the number of cycles they have been running PCR tests is a joke. It’s like playing a game with dice….. didn’t get the number you want? Just toss it over and over until you do! This retired nurse has been disgusted by the way this thing has been handled since Day 1. Unlike anything I have seen in my lifetime.

        2
        1. There Is data from all over the globe that definitively a PCR test can differentiate between SARS-Cov-2 and influenza.

  7. All one has to do is look at the data from the Disease Outbreak Control Division, State of Hawai’i – Department of Health, to see that only 1% of the Covid cases in the state from June 12 – December 28, 2021 are attributed to non-resident visitors. This should give pause to any Hawaii government official contemplating changes to the the Safe Travels program.

    1. BecUse those that have covid get on a plane to leave no way in heck are they starting locked up on island for 2 weeks. They leave town ASAP.

      3
  8. Good luck finding 700 health providers. New York has 60,000 new cases today and California has 40,000 new cases. If mask and vax worked the lockdown states wouldn’t be leading in new cases.
Most people are self-testing and lines for testing are long and results so delayed cases are likely vastly under reported.

    22
    1. Your comment would make more sense if 92,000,000 Americans, 63% of those White Americans, had not received even one shot and if everyone wore masks in indoor settings outside their homes. Vaccines and proper masking etiquette only work where everyone is vaccinated and madks.

      3
      1. The US is around 62-63% “white”, so I would expect 62-63% of any sub-population (e.g., unvaxxed) to be white. What other gratuitous racism do you got?

        8
  9. Sadly it looks like it’s all hitting the fan. Leaving businesses to their own devices per the Honolulu mayor isn’t going to end well. I think many will close down of necessity when their employees are ill, just like elsewhere nationwide, so it’s a losing proposition anyway. I just hope there are not excess deaths due to the hospitals being at capacity. Good luck one and all.

    9
  10. Follow NYC:
    100 dollars to get vaccinated

How about 75 for a booster

Money talks…even private industry here got non vaxers to give in

Use that extra visitor tax to expand hospital availability for the future

    1
    1. You say this as if it is a good thing. I know two people who are vaxxed and boosted with covid right now. It is not a panacea and the more information that comes out proves that. You allow your emotions and fear to rule your decisions. Be more thoughtful and caring.

      27
      1. Respectfully, Guy. Vax+boost was never intended to be a panacea. It was intended to keep you and your loved ones out of the hospital. Time travel back to 1942. Then people were asked to conserve on fuel, limited gas purchases, banned from buying certain wartime metals, and west coasters ordered to black cloth their windows at night to reduce aerial targeting. Those were no panacea either, yet prudent.

Is getting a jab or three such a horrible state-imposed directive?

        24
        1. I agree. The moaners and resistors and conspiracy theorists would not have fared well during WWII,nor the depression. But there wouldn’t have been many, people knew how to pull together then.

          16
          1. Nobody has exact figures, but the U.S. counted around 407,000 military deaths and around 12,000 civilian deaths. The total death count for all Americans amounted up to 420,000.

That was after four years. So far after two: 880,000+

Show me the difference between American response, sacrifice, and common sense compared to this war against a microscopic enemy who could care less about political ideology, and you might have a point.

            10
          2. The Soviet Union lost an estimated 26 million people in WWII. 3% of the world population or 75-80 million died in the war or because of the war. Not sure what your point is. Again, people are making unfounded, emotional responses to this virus.

            7
          3. The survival rate from Covid in America is 98.5%. The fatality rate of 1.5% conflates to the potential mortality of 5,100,000 Americans.

            3
          4. Curtis C. If you did not understand the post, read again. The original gentleman assumed that just because the vaccine doesn’t defeat COVID (a panacea), then I suppose his advice was just cest la vie.

I was simply comparing the response of the Greatest Generation’s sacrifice and common purpose to today’s Weakest Generation who cannot do the bare minimum of “sacrifice” by recognizing that we all need to do what we can to prevent hospitalizations and death.

            7
          5. Tony that number is correct only if 100% of our population got Covid…I don’t know of any disease where 100% of the population contracted a disease.

            2
          6. You’re assuming Tony, that every single American is going to get Covid and that 1.5 % will die. I’m sorry, but that’s not gonna happen.

            1
      2. but those folks that have COVID aren’t hospitalized. Almost all people hospitalized with COVID are unvaccinated

        13
        1. Hawaii 112 hospitalized 53 vaxxed
          Massachusetts 1597 hospitalized 503 vaxxed.

It’s working great. Exactly like they said lol

          9
          1. Liam – What is your source for number of hospitalized that are vaxed versus not vaxed? That info is not provided on the HO-EMA site, nor do they breakdown by age or anything else for that matter.

            4
          2. Go to Boston dot com and look at daily covid link
            Here’s what they have today.

            Newly reported cases: 21,137

            Total confirmed cases: 1,038,566

            Newly reported deaths: 36

            Total confirmed deaths: 19,773

            Newly reported tests: 119,292

            Total tests: 36,155,201

            Percent positivity (seven-day average): 16.44%

            Hospitalized patients: 1,817

Hospitalized patients who are fully vaccinated: 631

            ICU patients: 382

            Intubated patients: 250

            1
          3. I’ll need to find have but josh green was on hawaii news now and mentioned these numbers for hawaii on Tuesday and yesterday I believe it was 130 with 62. You can find it on hawaii news now YouTube.

            2
          4. Thanks, Liam. There it is: “112 hospitalized; 53 of them vaccinated” for Hawaii. If this keeps up, the unvaccinated will be demanding that the vaccinated be put in camps (or worse) to protect the unvaccinated. Something like that. Star-Bellied Sneetches….

            6
        2. Well, according to Liam’s source, ”Hawaii 112 hospitalized 53 vaxxed…”, at least according to Josh Green.

If anything, these totals show that nearly 50% in Hawaii’s hospitals are vaxxed, and Evan was factually incorrect. Now, the 10 people who “liked” his post are led to believe that kind of false claim is accurate, when it clearly is Not.

This IS the real problem…the facts are being manipulated by beliefs that are false, and that perpetuates more people into believing fake news. 🤷‍♂️
