1. Thank you for being brave enough to say what no other news pubs are saying — these policies are discriminatory against American citizens who live in other states. We have a trip to Hawaii scheduled for July and have been anxiously awaiting an announcement about the 14-day quar antine being lifted. That’s why we’ve been watching this situation very closely. The tone and messaging that Hawaiian officials are using towards their fellow American citizens from out-of-state is shocking and rude. They’ve been saying they want, “higher quality tourists” from other countries who will stay longer and spend more. Our family has spent a great deal of money visiting Hawaii in the past and this whole thing has been a giant slap in the face. I really can’t believe that government officials would treat other citizens from their own country this way when most travelers would be happy to undergo testing and follow any other safety practices the state puts in place to protect Hawaiian residents. I hope that, in the future, they will make rational decisions instead of emotional ones.

1. I would suggest a rational decision is opening up to the safest locals first rather then just let anyone come regardless of the infection rate
of where they are arriving from…..I would also suggest an emotional reaction would be to think you should be able to come here no matter what the risk to the state it presents

2. I can’t believe the lack of “Aloha” I am reading here. As a former resident that needs to go home and check on an 88 year old mother something needs to be done. Hawaii needs tourism to exist. Living in fear will not solve the problem. I live in Central Valley California and a senior, yet I know how to social-distance and stay safe. What makes you think that when we visit we will care less! Seriously Hawaii is and will always be my home. I know we all are frustrated with all that propaganda and thus should demonstrate more so what our islands and culture is all about – give and show “Aloha”!

1. They want to limit tourism but were incapable. The leaders are leaving and wern’t that great to start with. David Ige is in charge with no tourism experience. Good luck Hawaii =\. I hope I’m wrong! Id actually prefer that Paul is right!!

1. Hawaii deep down doesnt like Americans because they hold a grudge due to Hawaii being stolen by a group of businessmen that happened to be Americans. 1956 so its been awile but maybe now Hawaiians can let go of the hate and racist policies and words towards mainlanders.

2. No one is living in fear. And what “propaganda” are you talking about? C0VID is real; it’s killed over 110,000 Americans (including over 600 health care workers). California still has restrictions (as do a couple of dozen other states). Why should HI open all the way up just to please people who don’t want to wait?

3. Hi Moderators of best of Hawaii.
Could you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE moderate some of the hatred and politics out of the posts seen here? Also could you PLEASE remove conspiracy theorists posts who think that C0vid is a hoax? This is not doing anything positive for ANY OF US. PLEASE I am following the rules and that would really be appreciated for those of us who come here for information not to read hate mail towards Hawaiians local political officials or whatever. Thank you. Paul C

1. Hi Paul.

You should see all of the comments that we don’t post. It is a challenge and we do the best at moderating that we can. Thank you and others for your understanding.

Aloha.

1. LOL I BET! Thank you for what you do and for responding.
When we do come hopefully in September our goal is to ONLY give local Hawaiians business not big box stores or chains. Any recommendations on how to support the locals? Also are there places we can buy things now to help support Hawaiian businesses? Thanks again for what you do.

1. Hi Paul.

Thank you. Good question on shopping, and we don’t really have a good answer. You can buy from hyper-local businesses, for example our friends at Monkeypod Jam. There are a lot of other totally local businesses like that. Probably Google is your best friend in that regard. If you have anything specific you’re looking for, let us know and we’ll try to help.

Aloha.

1. Hi Paul.

We buy them at farm stands often. Interestingly, without the visitors, Costco has a glut of Maui ones that they have been selling for $1.99.

Aloha.

2. A couple of years ago I used Laura Mae’s shopping service to get some stuff that you can’t get on the mainland. She was really nice and provided great service.
Don’t know if this site accepts links but she’s at lauramaesshoppingservice dot com. You also can email her: lauramaeshops at gmail dot com.

PS – Couldn’t agree more about the politics and conspiracy stuff. I can’t imagine the chore it must be to wade through it and delete at least the worst ones. Maybe there’s a way to automatically divert it to someplace like Reddit 🙂

4. There have been many locals on this site who have complained of tourists not following the rules on the beaches and not self-isolating after arrival. On the news, we frequently see public events all over the US where people are not following social distancing rules. These are not “assumptions” but observations of what happens… Unfortunately.

I’ll be relieved if all the people who say they’ll go elsewhere actually do it. Hawai’i doesn’t need people with negative attitudes like these: attitudes of some imagined false sense of entitlement, selfishness, disregard for locals’ safety with limited health resources, and on and on.

I laughed out loud at the person who expressed offense at feeling discriminated against! I bet the colour of that person’s skin is neither brown nor black. It does everyone good to live in someone else’s shoes sometimes. It helps develop empathy, which the large majority of people complaining about not being able to go to Hawai’i, seems to be lacking.

I have a ticket for Hilo for the end of January, 2021. I will gladly comply with any rules that are in place at that time because I want to protect the people of Hawai’i. If necessary, I will cancel my trip if is it still too dangerous for residents.

1. Yeah plan your vacations around what others want and strict rules. Aloha?? Lol I think most sane people would rather go where they are respected as tourists and as individuals. Hawaii is misguided and off track. Locals are being racist and bigoted and hell bent on their own wellbeing rather than moderation or finding a peaceful solution or happy medium that works for all

1. Oh for GODS SAKE CF really? Come on. ITS AN ISLAND 20 million visitors show up so will the damn vi rus. Lets knock this thing in the butt so we can all go back to enjoying life but to call Hawaiians racists? REALLY CF I hope you stay away because I would hate to run into you there. NO Hawaiian I have ever known was RACIST. I am very disappointed in this page allowing all this political BS. I come here for information not to see peoples hate and vitriol because they cant schedule a vacation right now.

2. Good Go never come back to Hawaii so that those of us who love the islands and their people can all enjoy it without you.

1. Dont get too upset Paul. Yes racist, complete with stink eye and kill howlie day remnant feelings. Its alive and well in Hawaii. Hawaii survives only because if tourists and the military. Without that it becomes a bananna republic. Like the lady working at a grocery store on maui that didnt care the restrooms were trashed by druggies shooting up cocaine or whatever. Sorry Paul but i wasn’t born yesterday

If Hawaii would like to be more like China then maybe USA should allow China to pay thier bills and stop federal aid. A little respect and patriotism goes a long way. Im not saying support trump etc, just show a little respect for others.

1. CF,

With your attitude toward the locals, I picture you as one of those tourists who gives the others a bad name. It’s unfortunate that you can’t enjoy Hawai’i without that giant chip on your shoulder. You would probably be happier vacationing elsewhere.

And just for a bit of help the, correct spellings are “haole, banana, and their.”

2. You expressed it perfectly! Hope your January trip works out. We’re booked for May 2021 (changed from 2020) but if need be we’ll push it back even further. Some people are so impatient and demanding, then they have the chutzpah to complain about a supposed lack of aloha. I agree; they’re not the kind of visitors that anyone wants.

1. Dave,

I agree with everything you say on here! You must be part Hawaiian.

Nancy (not the angry one with the Kihei condo)

5. I’m sure if c0vid was raging on the East Coast and all but contained on the West Coast and Hawaii
decided to cautiously open to the West Coast first their would be little outcry. Most would see the logic and not feel so outraged.
Every State is trying to customize what works for them.
So letting in tourists from relatively safe areas, regardless of their nationality is a great start, it’s not forever and Mahalo to you that are so outraged, it means you really care about Hawaii so I understand, but be patient.
This will all be behind us sooner then later, the worst appears to be over, we know much more now then we did 3 months ago and the wheels are turning to get tourism back.
Sooner then you realize Hawaii will be open, less crowded (for a little while) and as beautiful as it ever was.
(and if the “I don’t care about anybody but me so I’m not wearing a mask anywhere” folks stay away we’ll all be better off!)

6. I am a bit amazed at the number of USA citizens that are outraged as other countries being allowed to visit first. I would argue that you folks really do not know the history of Hawaii and the impact of USA control has done to the Islands. Hawaii government and citizens are just as invested in our travel to their islands as we are. Thinking anything different, like it is discrimination is just crazy. Disease spreads quickly, again review history, and know they are just trying to protect their own citizens, like they couldn’t when USA took them over. If only our country had or would address C0VID as aggressively as other countries, we would not be having this conversation!

7. I am surprised at the amount of frustration and anger seen in many of these comments. Why are you taking this so personal? If you can’t go to Hawaii for awhile, it is just a delayed or changed vacation. For the residents of Hawaii, the lack of tourism is causing severe economic hardship. It is courageous and selfless of the Hawaiian residents to keep quarantines in place from locations that still have high rates of C0vid infection. Hawaiians are the ones suffering most from this policy. Because of its physical isolation it is not like other states in the union. Kauai, for example, has about 9 ICU beds and a similar number of respirators – there is no capacity to handle a large outbreak. How can one be anything but encouraging about bringing tourists from a C0VID free country to lessen the economic burden on Hawaiians while a plan to safely bring back mainlanders is worked out?

1. There seems to be a misconception. You can go right now. No one will stop you. You will have to quar antine for 14 days upon arrival. You can get food delivered from Safeway (O’ahu) and other sources including some ABC stores; also restaurants. Order by phone or online. No one is preventing anyone from going to Hawai’i.

8. We have been coming to Kauai for 25 yrs. It has become our second home, but to now hear that Hawaii is not going to allow their fellow Americans, US citizens, to visit the state, but to only allow international tourists is beyond disheartening. I am wondering how the Hawaiian government would feel if the state of Nevada, specifically, Las Vegas, would tell the fellow US state of Hawaii that “we don’t want you in Las Vegas”. How would the Hawaiians feel?
I am so disheartened by the Governor’s response to Tourism it has left a very bad taste in my mouth towards Hawaii in general. There is no longer an Aloha spirit.

1. “Hawaii is not going to allow their fellow Americans, US citizens, to visit the state”
This is totally untrue. Buy a ticket, get on a plane, go. No one will stop you.
It’s really hard to be polite when people post extreme untruths so they can complain about situations that don’t exist.

1. Good! You’ll be a perfect fit.
On your way, consider this:
C0VID deaths per million population
Hawai’i: 12 (twelve)
Florida: 126

9. I’m fine with Hawaii banning US citizens from “their” state as long as no more of my hard earned federal tax dollars go to support them. Pull all federal funding of social programs, law enforcement, military, healthcare, education and infrastructure in Hawaii. Hawaiians can send the bills to Japan and Australia and ask them when their next stimulus checks will arrive.

10. I live in Oregon, the c0vid rate is low, I want to stay at a timeshare I bought into many years ago. Its not in a busy area just a typical neighborhood and I lose my annual week if restrictions arent loosened soon. Ive practised distancing, wear a mask whenever I leave home, I will be upset if I cant visit but these other low risk visitors can. Ive visited every year for the past 40 years, spend money, and have never done one bit of harm. Missed the year of Iniki.

11. We have a Home on the Big Island, and are not able to enjoy the relief from our caregiving for a loved one on the Mainland now because we can only stay on our big Island home one week per month.

We have stayed for one week per month since we moved part time to the Pahoa area.

Now it is a vacant unused deteriorating home after years of beautifying the property.

Very sad when there could be a compromise of no quar antine if testing negative for c0vid right before a departing flight. If a visitor chooses not to test, then the must quarantine. Problem solved.

There has to be many ways to get some use open for those of us that will follow the rules.

Other wise we are all being held in during recess because the teacher does not know who stole their eraser.

Grow up Politicians, get creative, try not to be racist (because your sounding like that now), and solve the fricking problem.

12. Aloha!
Thank you for your very helpful informative articles. I’m hoping you can help me with a question. It looks like my husband, myself & dog will be moving to Maui very soon (he just got a job offer). Are there any airlines coming from LAX that will allow my dog on the plane (she’s a 50lb. pitbull) if of course I buy extra seats (for her) & muzzle her?? I’m very concerned to send her in a kennel as cargo, she’s 10 years old & never flown.
Thank you!!!

1. Hi Jeri.

We aren’t aware of how the specific airlines handle dogs in-cabin to Hawaii. The best bet would be to check with them on that.

Aloha.

13. It’s perfectly reasonable to require visitors to self-quar antine for 14-day unless they met objective standards.

For example
1. Don’t have a fever or any symptom
AND
1. Have had a C0vid within the past 48-hours OR
2. Not have come from or traveled to any state or country that has greater than 1 C0vid case per 10,000 people or similar criteria. This would allow visitors from Japan, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. It would also allow visitors from Alaska, Montana, and Oregon
without the need to quar antine. Hawaii’s current rate is .4 cases per 10,000 people.

Hopefully, by end of the summer, more states could qualify.

14. The United States is still averaging about 20,000 new C0vid cases per day. Japan is averaging about 30 new cases per day. How is it not just common sense to restart tourism with allowing visitors from Japan (and other low C0vid countries) while the U.S. mainland continues to flatten the curve, develop higher quality rapid testing, and put testing, screening and contact tracing processing in place?

15. As new data is emerging, the flu shot kills more people than c0vid. The CDC says that the death rate (highest) is .26% and is probably much lower since the numbers are so manipulated. This is on par with a bad flu season. So, are we going to start lockdowns when people start getting the flu & dying? Are we going to stop driving cars because people are dying from accidents? These continuing of harsh measures is insane. Why isn’t the governor comparing statistics of the harm & deaths as a result of lockdowns being done to everyone measured against the amount of harm & deaths of covid? Look at the suicide rates and the poverty being created, the people losing their businesses, the effects of sick people not being able to get proper treatment at hospitals. There is no comparison to the horrible effects of continued lockdowns with the effects of c0vid. I could go on & on but just doing some true comparisons should be enough of an argument to open up Hawaii now.

1. Yes these are my arguements also. It may even be more deadly than the flu but is not an excuse to take away civil rights guaranteed by the us constitution. We need to hold elected officials accountable. The situation in hawaii has gotten out of hand and i believe the federal govt and president needs to get involved. Harsh measures on tourists and others have no place in the usa and hawaii must be responsible as a us state for its rogue actions and totally rude discriminatory and unpatriotic actions and words. Aloha spirit is dead as of 2020

1. You say that Paul. But i am almost certain the givt will soon be backpedaling. The consequences are severe without immediate intervention to save tourism in Hawaii. You have a ship with no one at the helm. Go Hawaii!

16. I’ve read several comments from native Hawaiians about how poor health care is on the islands. I understand that they don’t currently have the facilities to take on large masses of people who are ill from C0vid. However, in 2017 AARP rated Hawaii #1 for health care among all of the states in the USA. I actually knew of a couple of retirees who took that into consideration when they moved to the islands.

Thanks again to Beat of Hawaii for allowing people to vent their frustrations without a lot of vitriol or political opinions.

17. Omg the state senators comment is stereotyping all of the American citizens who travel to Hawaii? Not to mention her remark about US citizens dtens not to follow the rules ?Doesn’t that include Hawaiian state citizens ? Because last time I checked, Hawaii was a US State since 1959.Totally uncalled for Discriminatory to say the least!! Let me see if I can find a stereotyping word that implies the same reverse order unbelievable

18. I’ve read a lot of the comments and it’s pretty heartbreaking to hear the vitriol from some in response to the possibility that Hawaii tourism may open to countries that have experienced much less C0VID, or have recovered better, than mainland USA. Those ranting about how this should never happen because Hawaii is, after all, part of the U.S., must be unaware that some state and city borders have been closed in the U.S. during this in order to protect citizens. And everyone should be aware that each state is pretty much operating independently, based on what each governor deems best for his/her state. Why should Hawaii’s governor not have that right to operate independently, especially considering that Hawaii’s healthcare system would be absolutely overwhelmed by an accidental influx of C0VID? In my view, it comes down to selfishness. We have a timeshare in Maui and have come every year for at least 20 years. It feels really sad to think we might miss our early 2021 time in Hawaii, depending on what’s happening then. We hope there’s a way we can bank our time and use it another year if we can’t go in 2021. But we would rather do what it takes to keep Hawaiians safe. And sure, spend your hard-earned vacation money elsewhere – that’s fine. But don’t be mean-spirited about it, threatening to never come back to Hawaii. I think Hawaiians – like a lot of us – are worried and afraid. I don’t blame them. People thought that sheltering at home asked a lot of them, but actually that’s the easy part. Figuring out how re-entry will work – for everyone’s best interests, which are all different – is extremely challenging. Mistakes will be made. Let’s try to not make really damaging mistakes – life and death ones. Thanks, Beat of Hawaii, for all you’re doing!

1. Hawaii is part of the United States of America! I am wondering how they will open to international travel without our President first declaring the opening of our borders. We have not even opened the borders to neighboring Canada or Mexico yet, let alone Japan! How about we cater to our U.S. citizens first!

19. Man, the Hawaii government doesn’t know what the heck they are doing. This is frustrating. Opening to Japan and other countries before mainland? What a joke.

20. This was a fascinating turn in what Hawaii wants to do. I have long been let Hawaii do what they want and need, and I am still that way, but they are showing that they realize they can’t continue going on as is. There was a quote yesterday from Paul Yanomine that the Japanese are “desirable tourists”. He lays out that they have low c0vid (although their positive numbers to death rate make me wonder about their testing capabilities…a whole different issue and brings their c0vid numbers into question), high spending power, and they “follow rules”. At this point it is no less than a PR nightmare. Legal or not, I can’t look away from the news reports. It is a train wreck. Hawaii doesn’t want their own country to come and visit. The Lieutenant Governor, a doctor, continues to spew untrue facts about C0VID, granted the facts seem to change daily. The news is riddled with reports of Hawaiians mistaking their own as tourists and harassing them. All of this takes tourists who are gentle and humble about visiting another place, tourists that you want, Japanese, American, whoever, and makes them uninterested, or even scared to come. But tourists who feel entitled will come anyway. You now have the eff you tourists singled out as the only ones that want to come. And Hawaii has to open at some point. That is reality. When that is I don’t know. But what you don’t want is so much bleeding from the locals who rely on tourism, and zero “desirable” tourists to come in and offer gauze.

21. Please allow visitors who have been tested 72 hours before arriving. Our Airbnb is suffering as many hotels and businesses. If we start to get new cases then go back to tighter restrictions. Allow travel with tests by July1st to help our tourism please

22. I listened live to the entire State House C0vid committee meeting with Central Pacific Bank’s Paul Yonamine and was appalled. I have also listened to friends who have returned to Maui and heard tourists on the plane say they planned to violate the quar antine and was equally appalled. This is not easy but you must realize the the HOTEL industry has great influence on the State and Counties here. The government is in Oahu and that is where most Japanese tourists go,. This bubble folks, is promoted not to protect us living here – it is to insure the HOTELS (and those they financially support) get theirs first. The Japanese visitor prefers hotels. They travel in groups and are most easily accommodated there. They also live in a society where regulation at home is the key. Oahu hotels will benefit first. Vacation Rental owners who pay taxes and follow the rules are far more than those who don’t yet you are seeing what happens when that non compliant owner takes advantage and allows rentals, when they are not supposed to. You will not see a greater problem by opening legal rentals – first, perhaps, only to those not subject to quarantine?? The bad apples are already doing their thing.

23. This was a very well rounded article. I’m disappointed in the way Hawaiians are treating mainlanders. We’re coming to realize that they have never considered us fellow citizens of the same country. Coming from an area where Hawai’ian vacations are common, a lot of people are switching to the Caribbean out of fear of anger and abuse from the locals.

24. Aloha, we have travel plan multiple islands is that going to be a possibilty? We are from Idaho and thus this far our flights are still on, Early August. Testing is not readily available and we are only going 10 days in total. Are you seeing any light at the end of the tunnel? Can they refuse us entry? Thank u for your thoughts and direction.

1. Hi Amy.

We are obviously all awaiting news from the state as to what the plan is for the end of the 14-day isolation. It can’t be much longer until that information is forthcoming. Suggest hanging in there just a bit and see with us what is revealed.

Aloha.

25. It seems this debate has broken down into people from Hawaii who truly want to open the State up in as safe a manner as possible and people from the mainland who are miffed if it doesn’t include them, regardless of the infection rate of where they are from.
Funny anyone took offense to Senator Kim’s comment about Americans not following rules when we see in the news businesses on the mainland making political statements about “no masks allowed” and the business in Texas that encourages hugging and shaking hands, etc etc. It emphatically does NOT define all Americans, it does define a significant portion. That’s the problem .
How do you deal with the “I don’t care about anybody but me so I’m not wearing a mask crowd”?

26. Could you please give me your opinion on travel to Maui in late September. I feel our trip that far out is in jeopardy after reading your updates here. I’m also wondering what my options are with regard to already purchased airfare with Hawaiian Airlines.
Thank you.

1. Hi Richard.

We would assume travel will resume to some form of normal by then. We will update as soon as possible on that. Once travel has resumed, terms you agreed to on purchase of tickets would normally prevail, no matter which airline.

Aloha.

27. What the heck is a travel bubble? Where did that term come from? I love Hawaii, but these Hawaiians are quickly turning me off to them. Why do they think they are so special? We all are have been out in the world and the death rate is only 99.9% in all US states. The flu killed 56,000 people in the US just 2 years ago and none of this closing was going on. Hawaii is USA after all. All the other states are open, so why aren’t you? I have a 2 week special trip planned for September, but I have alternative plans just in case. Sounds like Hawaii is going to lose my several thousand dollars in vacation expenses this year. I was staying at local lodging, so it wasn’t going to big chains.

1. JUST STOP! 105,000 citizens in 8 weeks died. THIS IS NOT THE FLU its much more dangerous than that. I am sure Hawaii wont miss your condescending uncaring attitude towards our island friends.

28. This issue seems to no longer be an issue of health, it is quickly becoming an issue of control and manipulation on the part of Hawaii’s governing body and real insight in to how the locals really feel about the visitors whose money puts food on their tables and a roof over their heads. In retrospect, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at the level of disdain the local Hawaiians have for mainlanders given the number of upside down flags we observed when we were there in Feb. If US citizens are not welcome then perhaps our federal officials should consider pulling all federal aid to the state. If they hate being part of the US so much, then perhaps we should consider giving them their wish. It is a sure thing that individual citizens can easily take their money elsewhere and will likely do so. It is my hope that all of the comments on this site are being communicated to the elected officials of Hawaii.

29. My husband and I have an Anniversary trip planned for November to Maui. Could you please advise me as to what we will need to do to make this possible? I would appreciate any information you can give me. Thank you. Judy

30.
State Senator Donna Mercado Kim said, “U.S. citizens tend to not want to follow these rules”
Wow. That is so patently wrong and offensive. Every single friend and family member I have has diligently followed the stay at home order since its onset. And yes, as Kyle M stated, that comment is discriminating and prejudicial. I understand wanting to maintain the health of the citizens. I also understand wanting to safeguard the culture and beauty of our 50th state. But the antipathy toward vacationers that we are now hearing has been eye-opening and disappointing. Most people don’t want to spend their hard-earned money in a place they’re not wanted. Listen, I live in a widely vacationed location, and it gets pretty congested because we also have beautiful weather, plus we have beaches, Disney, Knotts, Universal, etc nearby. But I can honestly say I’ve never heard anyone wanting to shut out other US citizens, ever. There are certainly other beautiful vacation spots that are more convenient to access. Let’s face it, even the shortest flight to Hawaii is tedious at best and often more than a little uncomfortable. I do suspect that keeping continental US citizens away from Hawaii is going to have a huge ripple effect. As people travel to new locations, they are likely to return to those locations again and again, just as many had been returning to Hawaii year after year. In the many travel groups I’m a member of, this has been a serious topic of conversation for weeks now, and people are discussing plans to vacation at one of the many other lovely islands and beaches off the other coast. I’d hate to have the Hawaiians who depend on vacationers for their financial welfare devastated by the decisions of those in public office and in some of the more vocal local outlets. I really hope the Aloha doesn’t leave the islands — that to me is the most beautiful thing Hawaii has had to offer.

1. Come on. I didnt like the GENERALIZATION either however you and I both know there are MANY ugly americans who feel entitled to do what ever the hell they want to do. I dont blame Hawaii at all Threaten all you like we are still going to go and see the great people of hawaii as soon as we are allowed to come! We wont miss you if you decide to go elsewhere it will just make it nicer for the rest of us

31. Hmm? This is what Japan did…”How Japan tacked Coronavirus without a Lockdown”…article in businessinsider.

I read on this blog how the healthcare system in Hawaii is inadequate for even the citizens of the state- Why is that? Who’s been running the state?

32. Aloha, Amazing how misguided government can be. Keep in mind that Japan was supposed to have the Olympics this year . . .

Common sense people.

Mahalo for reporting all sides.

33. I cant stop laughing about some of the crap Hawaii is coming up with, particularly the government. Travel bubble? Really?? Or is it hawaii is thought of as the center of the universe??? Was it not enough to ban tourism and tell visitors they arn’t welcome? So after that why not admit other countries visitors first. Anti usa all the way! Go hawaii. Yeah no i will be visiting usvi and the many other perfect destinations that welcome visitors!

34. We normally visit Hawaii annually for three to four weeks. Though we have been unable to do so this year. If Hawaii allows foreign visitors before welcoming mainland tourists we will not return. Come on Hawaii, if you’re looking to loose your mainland support, you’re going in the right direction. We do have choices.

1. I agree Brenda. If Hawaii turns away the citizens of their own country to allow Japan to visit first, I too will never set foot in Hawaii again. What a disgrace to treat the mainland that way! That decision would definitely make a statement! However I’m not even sure the President would allow for that.

35. Thank you for staying unbiased and allowing both sides of the debate to be heard. Enjoy reading others opinions and sharing ours.

We have a trip booked for July 17. We are taking distancing very seriously. We are willing to be tested. We of course would not visit if the 14 day quarantine remains and are disheartened that the state would generalize and not accept us as vacationers but would accept others simply because they come from another country where generally speaking there is greater control? Why would we want to visit a place EVER that would think of us in this way. To me this is…

discrimination…Treatment or consideration based on class or category rather than individual merit; partiality or prejudice

This means that prejudices held by an individual towards a group are transferred onto a single individual without regards to his/her individual merits.

These are troubling times. It is never too late to make the right decision. Let’s hope the state government reconsiders the message they are sending with these proposals and they never become reality.

Thank you!

1. Not everyone going to Hawaii are tourist. What about former locals that need to go home and check on their elderly parents? This is a slap on the face.
