  1. We have a trip planned to the big island on 5/19 – 5/28. do you think the airline cancellations could be cancelled earlier than 5/20. Also, what do you think the odds are of the 14 day quar antine could be lifted by then? Mahalo!!!

    1. Hi Sharon.

Obviously no one knows. So if you want our opinion, it is that there will still be the quar antine and flights will not start sooner than is now planned.

      Aloha.

  2. ATTN UNITED flyers. Wait for United to cancel your flight. On 3/23/20, I canceled our flights for 4/16/20 since it was obvious we wouldn’t be going. Last week, United had rescheduled our flight times and added a layover (and our connecting flight leaves the terminal 9 minutes before we arrive!! Thanks United.) And then our resort said they canceled all reservations for 6 weeks. With a two week quar antine in our room, if we could even find a room, we had to cancel the whole vacation. A day later (3/24/20) I see United charged my credit card $250. I asked for the money back and I’ll post an update if United comes through. I could not re-book or change the flight for a later date, as I have no idea when/if the virus will be over and hotels and airlines are all back in service. So much for the compassion of airlines even though they say there will be no fees charged due to this!

    1. We had tickets on Hawaiian to the west coast and then United to IAD.
Had a good experience dealing with HA, not so good dealing with UA…Oh well, kind of be expected.
Hat’s off to Hawaiian in taking the lead to protect Hawaii and being the most upfront with everyone!
Doesn’t seem like it now but this will all be behind us, hopefully sooner then later.
      Good luck to everyone.

  3. I looked on the DOT webpage It sounds like in the U S they can offer a voucher instead of a refund. Is that true if they cancel our flights to Kauai?

  4. Any word on Alaska Airlines flights? I keep thinking they will cancel my flight on April 11. Can’t imagine anyone would be taking those flights with a 14 day quar antine. I don’t want a voucher since I already have one from another flight.

  5. Eternally grateful for you, Beat of Hawaii. I am constantly refreshing the Hawaiian Airlines policies but you have the information I need way ahead of time. I understand they are overwhelmed. I just want to send love to everyone at this time. Yes, I’m crushed I can’t go on the trip I’ve waited so long for but it will happen eventually. There are much more important things to focus on. <3

  6. Seems that Hawaiian is one of the few airlines that are being up front about what their plans are. I have flights for a family of 4 on United mid May and they are currently not cancelling flights until the day of.

I can cancel my flight voluntarily but will no longer be given a refund, just a voucher for the amount of my ticket with an expiration date of 1 year from purchase, which in my case was mid July. That voucher will not be worth the electronic paper it is printed on unfortunately.

I wish Hawaiian would fly to Denver so I can dump United all together.

  7. Thank you for staying on top of the constantly changing news. I’ve been waiting patiently for Hawaiian to cancel and now they have. I’m going to wait a few days before collecting my refund, and simply hoping my miles are refunded too. Not holding my breath. But not going to fret it either. Mahalo to you guys!

  8. Thanks for including the US DOT statement “even If your flight is cancelled and you choose to cancel your trip as a result, you are entitled to a refund for the unused transportation – even for non-refundable tickets. You are also entitled to a refund for any bag fee that you paid, and any extras you may have purchased, such as a seat assignment. ”

Does that mean the airlines must provide a refund? All I’m seeing is the option to cancel now and book later, leaving the funds with the airlines rather than in my bank account. Please advise if you can. Mahalo!

    1. Hi Jane.

If you have a problem getting a refund from any US airline for a cancelled flight, there is a link at the bottom to file a consumer complaint.

      Aloha.

  9. We, Henry and Barbara Akau, have a r/t flights from HNL to LAS ON 5/1/20 and return 5/6/20. Do we get all our costs returned to us? What do we have to do? Please help, this is scary and it makes travel BAD.

    1. Hi Barbara.

You will need to contact the airline you are flying on. If flights are cancelled (as Hawaiian’s are through mis-May) you should be entitled to a refund, or rescheduling, as you would prefer.

It is best to use their website to determine your options as it will be difficult to impossible to reach them by phone.

      Aloha.

  10. Aloha and thank you for the valuable information updates.

I was booked roundtrip SFO/HNL roundtrip outbound Sat 3/28 and return Tues 3/31. Just received email from HA notifying flight cancellation. The email also included options to along with links to, among other choices, (1) cancel and get credit and (2) cancel and get refund. The 2 links lead to the same page instructing the user to complete a cancellation request form and to specify “Covid 19” from the drawdown menu. But no mention anywhere of how to request a full refund. Will wait a couple of days and check the website again to see if HA has updated the form to include the option for a refund.

Mahalo and stay safe and well,
    Adrian L

    1. Hi Adrian.

Thank you for that update. We do expect that change in policy to be reflected on their website soon.

      Aloha.

  11. Aloha to everyone @ BeatofHawaii,
Based on your updates, I’ve had to cxl my trip for the Lantern Fest. on Memorial Day to mark the 2nd anniv. of my mom’s passing. It would’ve been an AMAZING experience but it’s not meant to be. Such is life.

Mahalo & malama pono to you all,

    Sudesh

  12. I have tix on HA for last week of Aug & 1st week Oct 2020. I’m going to ride the wave and hopefully this will be over by then.

  13. Aloha,

Your website has been a valuable help for us over here on the mainland. We can’t thank you enough. Stay out of harm’s way. We need to stay patient, this too shall pass.

  14. I keep saying how much appreciate this timely, responsibility sourced information concerning this crisis. I’d appreciate if you’d include the other carriers and the latest on change procedures and fees and such, good stuff and maybe policies that could be improved. Thank you in advance no matter.

    1. Hi Thomas.

Thank you! We have updated the other carriers and will do our best to continue doing so.

      Aloha.

  15. West Coaster Maui-lover here who reads your updates daily. Thank you for everything you guys are doing. We all appreciate you keeping us informed. Sending love and wishes for your health and safety.

  16. I have rebooked my flight from OAK-OGG for 7/13-8/1
I hope by then things will die down. I am thinking the heat should really put a damper on Covid for awhile.

    1. Virus 19 starts to die in the air in arid conditions like Death Valley and Nevada when the air temperature reaches 115 degrees. Hawai’i temps around 82-86 and humid are not as welcoming as 50-60 but Hawai’i temps will not kill it. Solution is to stay home and following the instructions unlike the stupid spring break kids.

  17. We are booked to fly from LAX to HNL from 7/31-8/7. We will be staying at Turtle Bay in Oahu. Should we reschedule?

  18. We are scheduled to fly from LAX to Honolulu on April 25 but it now looks as though our trip will not happen. I’ve tried calling Hawaiian air to assist me with cancelling our flight but all I get is a busy signal. We made our reservation on Hawaiian Air and because we used air miles for part of our flight we were instructed to call Hawaiian air to cancel.

  19. My family of 6 is scheduled to fly from San Diego to Maui, March 21, 2020. All I want is for Hawaiian Airlines to to allow me to reschedule for next year during spring break or allow us to give a credit of the fees paid to family members who plan on going to Maui in September. All the cruise line offered 125% credit toward a future cruise. The airlines should work with us, since this is beyond our control.

  20. We are supposed to fly out of San Diego to Maui March 26for a week. We have a condo already paid for. Not sure if things will be a go as of yet. We keep anticipating HA to cancel the flights

    1. Please don’t travel to Hawaii right now! Stay home – care for your families and ours! The US government is asking for no unnecessary travel, why are people still going on vacation? Please – our resources are limited already, and county facilities are closed. As of yesterday we have confirmed community spread in Hawaii. In Florida they are even limiting the number of people on the beaches, I’m sure it will be the same here soon! We have to work together to combat the spread by staying home!

      1. Dear CH, I totally agree. While I love my time in Hawaii, I love the Hawaiian people more. The islands face very special circumstances in situations like this that we on the mainland don’t even have to think about . Due to their remoteness, there are limited supplies & resources. Limited medical facilities on some of the smaller islands. Difficulty getting mass amounts of medical supplies, respirators etc to the islands. While I planned to travel over in March, I abandoned that plan for this year. The islands will be there when the virus has passed. Please be Pono. Think of the local residents & families and think of your own loved ones before traveling & risking carrying this around the islands or home to your family. Mahalo

      2. I agree. Hawaiian Airlines should cancel all flights a refund every person. Perhaps the governor of Hawaii will quar antine the islands…

        1. Hawaiian Airlines should be providing Hawaii the essential air service that is needed…everyone else
          should be cancelling their flights.
These are unusual times that require innovative thinking.

  21. I have Maui trip coming up Sept 10- Oct 1. Have not made air reservation yet. If I make reservation now, will change waiver fee be honored? If flight cancelled by Hawaiian result in refund?

  22. Supposed to fly out March 22nd – one week away- guess we will see what transpires between now and then.

  23. I checked today for flights and cost from Memphis for the last week of April which is my annual trip. Round trip with great connections AAirlines are $412.00 basic economy. Very tempting.

  24. Aloha…we have reservations from LAX to Lihue on May 2. Not freaking out yet, just a little concerned. Hoping by end of March or first of April things will be better and wont have to worry about changing reservations at the last minute. Don’t know if can change dates at condo we reserved either. Anyone else going in May?

    1. Aloha, Yes we are going to Kauai in May also. Still holding on to see what happens and hoping for the best. our timeshare is problematic if we cannot arrive for our reservations. We will keep hanging in there for the time being. Good luck,
      Mahalo

    2. I have a trip planned the 2nd week of June. I am holding out to see what will happen. AA has decreased flights from Nashville to Lihue to $375 RT but I am stuck with tickets through Southwest for $604…wondering when SW will drop lower. It’s scary because you don’t know which airlines will go belly up from all of this.

  25. We are scheduled for 4/30 – 5/15 Seattle to Maui. I’m sitting tight until mid April where I hope to have more information to make a decision. Unfortunately our first week is at one of the higher end timeshares so I won’t get that money back. First time I have stepped up and paid that much for a week. If we end up not being able to go I won’t reschedule due to the loss of that money 🙁 Hopefully things will improve for everyone soon. This is having such a negative impact on the financial, physical and emotional well being of so many people that worrying about a vacation is so small compared to being able to house and feed your family.

    1. Aloha Catherine – my hubby and I are in the same boat as you. We have a time-share reservation for a week for which we won’t be able to get a refund. If Hawaiian cancels our Tuesday flight, it will affect our time share reservation. And like you, we won’t be able to reschedule because of the cost. But we are going to sit tight and wait to see what May brings as far as how the virus affects airline schedules, etc. Hoping for the best, and keeping in mind that this won’t last forever and better days will come. Stay well and hang on to your reservations for now if you can.

  26. I would certainly hope that if they cancel my May 14 flight, I would have the option of a refund. Their current policy of waiving change fees buy requiring you reuse your fare by December 31 in not a viable solution for me. Neither is, while I’m on it, a fee to redeposit my air miles. A voluntary change with those policies in place is one thing, but if they pull the plug it is something completely different.

    1. Hawaiians current policy of having to rebook and use so soon is very unreasonable!
We are ticketed to go in May and have just cancelled both our timeshare on Kauai as well as Mariott on Oahu successfully
But now Hawaiian is the problem….
I am going to wait a few weeks and hope that Hawaiian come out with a more reasonable policy
The islands are going to be very taxed with supplies, medical, etc…not a good time to go, not to mention
the airports….stay home and hope that Hawaiian comes to their senses and puts health ahead of profits

  27. Due to fly beginning of June. It’s was a special trip for my 60th birthday. Saved for years for this.
    Should I cancel ?

    1. What Janelle said. This could get very bad, or it could get well. I’d wait to cancel until the last possible moment that you can, see what happens, etc. Make sure you check out refund policies from every business you’ve prepaid with before cancelling – airlines, car rental agencies, tour companies, etc.

  28. Thank you so much for keeping us updated! Heading to Oahu for the month of April on AA from Memphis via a Chicago nonstop flight. Hoping the flight scheduling might be settled in the next week or so. Understanding of changes we may have to make for some interisland flights during our stay. We stay windward side on Oahu so fear of crowds as in Waikiki not so much. Mahalo and stay healthy!

    1. Hi Al.

Thanks. It is impossible to know what will evolve nationwide and in relation to travel and Hawaii in particular. Our sense is that we will know a great deal more in the next week.

      Aloha.

    2. Our state of Hawai’i is always behind the mainland. If it’s bad in the SF Bay Area or Seattle now, then we can expect it to be really bad here in April/May. We are seeing the first imported Covid cases in our hospitals here just now, but the curve is pointing up. Two observations: Apart from shopping for toilet paper and water, our local population is still ignoring the crisis — not a lot of sanitizing and social distancing. Our local hospitals are not up to dealing with situations — we have few ventilators and isolation of infected patients in the ICU is currently barely feasible.

  29. Why is Hawaiian Airlines only giving refund to Merrie Monarch booking?????
Others just waive change fees and no refunds.

  30. So, obviously this current predicament is going to be hurting the airlines’ bottom line. I can only imagine that folks are holding off on any plans as well, which also hurts/prevents the airlines by the lack of income from future ticket sales as well.

That said, I have a multi-island 3 week visit planned for November. My accommodations are already set but have not purchased airline tickets. Would it be expected that airlines could set bargain deals for early purchases as a revenue stream? Usually, 40-70 days prior to travel is the sweet spot.

    1. Aloha Craig,

I’m in 2 FB groups – Hawaii and Maui. It seems like people cancelling their trips for March, April or May have rescheduled for October and November.

  31. Should be interesting. We are to fly LAX-OGG May 15. I’m hoping since it’s a direct flight it wont be too impacted. I wonder what hotels are going to do?

  32. Thanks for your informative website. I checked the flights that we booked from San Jose to Kauai for upgraded cabin in May. These are weekend tickets for $450 round trip which was a great deal last November. They are now being offered for $317, and $237 basic cabin. I think this virus will blow over well before then. This could be a great deal for folks to fly to Kauai.

    Mahalo

    1. Aloha, certainly hoping and praying that it is a short “wonder”, and it burns out fast, however, I’m not betting on that happening any time soon !!! Blessings

    2. Only the people of Kauai in Facebook groups are begging people not to come even in May! So the majority of people in that group are canceling and postponing to June and later. I feel like a bad guy wanting to hold out and wait and see, for our visit May 24th which is so close to June!?🤷🏻‍♀️

  33. I’ve been trying all day to change my flight online, but I get an error message right at the very end. Have also called 20+ times and only get a busy signal – and this is the corporate desk.

    1. I called the Hawaiian Miles number to cancel a trip to SEA…..Was put on hold and warned it would be an hour. Fair enough, these are unusual times and it would be pretty silly to think an airline could ramp up for the circumstances and not have long hold times…every airline is dealing with a huge flood of calls. Put the phone on speaker, went about my business (now my desk is the neatest it’s been in awhile!) and sure enough, an hour later they answered and couldn’t have been nicer or more efficient.

  34. We leave in 10 days. Everyone I talk to says don’t cancel. It will be fine. But things are changing every day. 😓

    1. Hi we are due to fly out to Honolulu Tuesday night from Sydney Australia
Hope we will still be able to go ? Many thanks

      1. Hi Sandra.

We aren’t aware of any issues at this time. Wishing you a good trip.

        Aloha.

      2. I would go as planned. If it wasn’t for my sons school shutting down for the semester, I would be enjoying the islands much more! That being said, I honestly don’t feel the panic here at all. It is warm and humid, 🤞🏻 Virus’s don’t like this. 👍🏻 Just very hard to be in HI with my daughter who lives here and my son I’m flying home today from MO to SD. Talk about stressful time! Once he arrives home, I will be much better…

    2. We’re scheduled to leave in 5 days on Hawaiian airlines. I’m debating if I should cancel (used A ton of chase ultimate rewards for my family of 6 during spring break) or wait to see what happens. The decision might be made for us. Any advice?

    1. Hi Erin.

Yes, sadly it seems you are correct. We’ll update as soon as we learn more.

      Aloha.

    2. Aloha, I am also sitting on May 5 reservations with timeshare done. Getting concerned but will wait and see.
Mahalo for keeping us up to date.
