  1. Masking is a joke unless they are N95. The masks that most people wear are borderline useless. Unless the right masks are mandated requiring masks is merely a placebo.

    1. Good point Eric. I spent most of my working career in the nuclear power industry where we were required to take “industrial mask safety” training annually. I’ve noticed in the last few years of mask-wearing that 98% of people are not wearing N95’s. Most people are wearing transparent cloth or “gators”. This gave rise to people having a false sense of security and a significant increase in Covid numbers.

        1. Thanks for your comment. It’s not where I live. I travel all over and it’s the same everywhere. I rarely see any one with an N95.

I think masks should be optional. Those that want to wear them should and those that do not shouldn’t.

  2. Wearing a mask should always be optional. If you think it’s protecting you wear it but you might as well wear it forever since viruses will always be with us. They were here before Covid and will be after, if it ever ends. I love how masks original intent were to cover sick persons mouths but know healthy people wear them as protection.

  3. I won’t fly anywhere they require the ineffective masking of people on flights. Where are the peer reviewed ,double blind studies on efficacy? Faucinwas right from his first comments before lockdowns. Masks do not stop the micron sized COVID particles from transmission.

  4. As someone who helps take care of and elderly, immune compromised family member, I hope all the airlines bring back the masking. It’s been proven that when worn properly, they help prevent the spread of airborne spread virus. For those who have a problem thinking of the health and safety of others I ask that you kindly stay home while the rest of us who actually care can enjoy our Hawaiian vacation

  5. I definitely agree that cautions are wise. Having said that, the most recent wastewater data I see posted at the Biobot site shows a decline in wastewater counts for Hawaii statewide as of January 11 (your data is early January). Maybe I am reading it wrong. see biobot.io/data/

  6. I never stopped wearing my mask in crowded places. I wore my mask on the flight from east coast to Hawaii. No issues. I will be wearing my mask on our upcoming trip to Europe. We spend thousands on our trips and I’m not going to stay in bed sick during our vacations. The anti mask/anti vaccine crowd can do as they please. If that want to be sick during their vacay then so be it.

  7. Here we go again…

The article says the WHO claims this is the “most transmissible variant so far detected”. Ah, but what about the severity of this version? No one seems to consider the progression of subsequent mutations to less severe disease.

Thankfully the masking is optional (so far).

  8. Masks don’t work and neither do the booster shots sheeple. The spread of Covid is due to the jab being no longer effective. It is like the flu shot. Just because you got the flu shot, doesn’t mean it’s effective. My mother 82 got the flu shot this past year and she came down with influenza. I have known multiple people who got the jab and lost their baby, and their life, and others who came down with Covid after they got triple boosted. Your best option is to receive natural immunity by exposing yourself to the virus. That is the only way to defeat this…but heh, what do I know? I didn’t drink the cool-aid like the rest of you sheep still wanting to mask up. Do you honestly think that diaper around your mouth is going to stop it?

    1. Natural immunity to the coronavirus, just like the acquired immunity that is provided by vaccines, fades over time. Neither one of them is perfect. A lot of us would rather acquire our immunity without having to go through the actual full disease process, which can prove fatal in many cases, as you well know.

  9. The masks do nothing and everyone knows it. My husband and I were planning a trip back to Maui next month–but no thank you. I will not go through this garbage again.

  10. We have continued to wear a mask on flights & in the airport. We haven’t flown since July when we definitely were in the minority. We fly to Kauai next week & I will be curious if we see more masks or not. I don’t mind wearing a mask, but there was so much mask resistance I will be surprised if many respond to a recommendation.

      1. Some of us are immunocompromised, have never had Covid, and doing everything we can not get it! I am a principal scientist for a company that developed one of the earliest PCR tests for Covid. For 37 years I trusted an N95 mask to keep me safe. It now allows me to travel with some safety. But being in the minority in wearing a mask makes my mask-wearing less effective. Definitely not a liberal or political statement to be safe.

        1. Thanks for your post but…
A mask should be for personal protection. Mandating everyone wear them for the benefit of an extremely small minority is madness. Besides, the masks most wear do little to nothing to prevent the spread.
