Kuau Cove at Mama's Fish House on Maui

Only One Hawaii Restaurant Made Yelp’s Top 10 Most Romantic In America

Only one Hawaii restaurant made the top 10 on Yelp’s list of the most romantic restaurants in America. That restaurant was Mama’s Fish House in Paia, Maui, which landed at number nine nationally just ahead of Valentine’s Day.

Yelp’s ranking is based on reviews by Yelp Elite members, with no more than 15 restaurants per state. Hawaii did not disappear from the ranking. Nine restaurants from the islands appeared in the top 100.

After Mama’s at number nine, the next Hawaii restaurant does not show up until #36. That was Signature Prime Steak and Seafood on the 36th floor of the Ala Moana Hotel in Honolulu.

What Yelp’s list reveals about Hawaii dining.

Hawaii markets itself relentlessly on romance. Sunset dinners, oceanfront tables, anniversaries, honeymoons, and once-in-a-lifetime meals are integral to how the islands are sold to visitors. With that framing, you would expect Hawaii restaurants to show up near the top of a national romance list in clusters. But instead, only Mama’s broke through in the top 10.

The rest followed much later, including By The Sea, House Without A Key, Michel’s at the Colony Surf, Noe at Ko Olina, Azure, Tidepools (Kauai), and Taormina Sicilian Cuisine. All are on Oahu except as noted.

Most of those are resort or hotel restaurants selling the view as #1. Mama’s is doing something else entirely.

Why this lines up with what we already found.

We reviewed Mama’s Fish House recently after years of driving past it, never stopping, and assuming it was living off its reputation. We paid full price, were treated like any other reservation, and nobody knew who we were. That is how we operate across restaurants, hotels, and airlines, and we’re mentioning that given some readers assume otherwise.

What stood out at Mama’s was how little of it felt like a performance. The restaurant sits beside a small beach cove, and the light across the water shifted naturally as dinner unfolded. Service followed the table rather than any pre-ordered playbook, and the room felt both elegant and relaxed at the same time. That is not how most high-end Hawaii dining experiences operate, and it helps explain why Mama’s landed where it did on this list.

The Valentine’s Day reality.

This ranking does not change the practical reality for visitors. Mama’s Fish House requires reservations months in advance, and a national top 10 label will only make that tougher. Most Valentine’s Day diners will need to end up choosing from the resort restaurants that dominate the rest of the list. There are tricks to getting into Mama’s, though, so please check the review for all of that.

Which Hawaii restaurant feels most romantic to you, and does this list reflect that, or did it miss the point entirely?

  1. My husband & I ate there 30 years ago. The Mai tais were fab & the food was, equally excellent but have not been there since due to the ridiculous reservation requirements. Probably won’t go back.

  2. We went once. One and done. Not worth the drive, the food, and especially the price. Service was no better than your local Chilis.

  3. “Only one Hawaii restaurant made the top 10 on Yelp’s list of the most romantic restaurants in America.” There are 50 states, so having even one in the top 10 is an accomplishment. And, 9 restaurants making the top 100 is also nothing to sneeze at.

Having said that, none of the restaurants look like anything I would find romantic. It looks like they have to have a high volume to make the list – the opposite of my definition of 💘

  4. We have never been and probably never will. It is not even the money as much as the whole reservation hunt and the hype, which makes it feel like a restaurant theme park to me. If I have to plan a meal that far in advance, I would rather eat something simple and watch the sunset for free.

  5. I am sure Mama’s is great, but I have zero interest at those prices. When a dinner out starts feeling like a payment, it kills the romance part for me.

  6. A lot of dining here is overpriced and forgettable, especially when it is attached to a resort. Mama’s is overpriced too, but at least it is memorable, and that is the main difference.

  7. I have a love-hate relationship with Mama’s. The setting is incredible but the hype makes people act weird. If you go in expecting a quick sunset meal, or a reasonable price, you picked the wrong restaurant.

  8. A lot of Hawaii’s resort dining is no soul and all view. Mama’s is expensive, but at least it does not feel like it is selling you a script.

  9. I love Mama’s, but I also think it is fair to admit it is a splurge and not some hidden gem. We had a beautiful dinner and the service was excellent, but the bill was painful. I do not regret it, but we only do it once every few years.

  10. We went to Mama’s once and I understood immediately why people plan a whole Maui trip around it. The place is not trying to act romantic, which is probably exactly why it feels romantic.
