If your vaccinations are outside the 90 day window, does that mean you can’t travel, or you can travel with a negative test? DOn’t think the CDC will have firm evidence on vaccinations for a while, but I’ve never heard of a vaccination that only lasts 3 months.
Mahalo for keeping us up to date.

Hi Lee.
No word on that, but guidance will probably have to come from the CDC. Thanks for your many comments.

Aloha, I am not sure why the governor is cautious about the Covid vaccination 3 month restriction. WHen you get a flu shot you are not a carrier. I have not heard any news about vaccinated people giving Covid to anyone. I hope to vacation in Kauai in a few months.

Green saying he wants one thing, the other current Clown, Ige, saying he isn’t making any decisions until the science says so, and therefore, because of governments like these, the drama fest of “30 days to slow the spread” will be 365 days, come March 16th.
Hawaii and their inept Government has been in a time warp for 11 months, while more and more people go from middle class to poor, and/or die from other circumstances related to Covid, yet they still don’t have a solid plan for fixing the devastated travel and hospitality industry, when the economy depends on it.
Are they even looking into alternative sources of industry to ensure this doesn’t happen again? How can they plan for the future, when they can’t even manage the Now? Why does it appear the State is just sitting on their hands? If they aren’t willing to commit to the here and now, to regulate the current situation, why can’t they be looking forward to help create alternate industrial sources to enhance and subsidize the economy. This seriously can’t be allowed to happen again.

This horrible situation in Hawaii got me thinking. A decent amount of the suffering, not only for my bothers and sisters residing in the Islands, but the many people who have plans to visit the Islands, is a direct result of the government’s leadership (or lack of). Well, I look this us, unfortunately, Ige is in office until Dec 2022. … oh well, I was ‘wishing’ for a change of leadership sooner than later .

Thank you for the update. Vaccination travel that requires someone to travel inside a 10 week window of their completed vaccination (2 weeks following the second dose thru 3 months) is pretty much useless. First, you don’t get to choose your vaccination date, so planning a vacation would be out and you’d have to be ready to travel on a whim. Second, your travel companion(s) would rarely be vaccinated in that same window. I guess it might help singles travel, but there’s no way a family would meet those requirements. If vaccinations aren’t good for at least a year in the plan, they can quit wasting their time on it.

Jeff S…
As many of us have, you pointed out the futility of this plan!!! How come we’re all smarter than the Hawaii State Government?
Jeff S
I’m not sure Barbara. Seems to be a lack of awareness of reality. Most people have to plan very far in advance to have a nice trip to Hawaii. In our case, we have a vacation for 9 that was paid for in September of 2019 for a June 2020 trip. Of course, airlines / hotels gave vouchers if we rebooked for 2021. So now June 2021 is coming quickly and some of us were vaccinated in December 2020 and January 2021. The others are hoping to be able to get theirs prior to May. There isn’t any way to fit us in the window they have described and we’re simply not going to travel across the state and pay for tests two or three days before travel. We’re at the point of thinking that if there isn’t a clear decision on this soon that we’ll seek a legal way to go pretty much anywhere else.
BARBARA M
Jeff S… I feel your pain – although just for 2 not 9! And we as well have a logistical nightmare trying to get tested in a timely manner – depending on what day of the week we travel, up to 4 extra days in our departure city.

I had my second vaccine yesterday, and I’m excited about leaving for Maui (my first trip to Hawaii!) on March 6. Will I still need to order a COVID-19 test within 72 hours of my departure?
(I will be leaving from Bozeman, Montana.) Please reply soon, so I’ll be able to order the COVID-19 test quickly (hopefully by tomorrow) if I need to have one!
Thank you so much!
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Gloria.
At this point yes you need to comply with testing. There has been nothing announced yet for vaccination-based travel requirements.
Aloha.

So getting a negative test 72 hours prior to flight is still good?

Another moving of the goalposts. Last year I cancelled twice. Am planning on visiting this August and November. Will see if these guidelines will change again. I suspect as much. Beginning to feel like I am in an abusive relationship. The best course of action may be to get my vaccination and return to Mexico and hit up Italy in 2022. Or just hook up the RV and hit the road again. Strange times. May be years before things shake out in the islands.

Aloha,
By the way the vaccine rules apple, as my wife and I have a trip planned in mid-June for Kona, since I got my 2nd Covid 19 vaccine on Feb 15, I would be a month outside the three month window, while my wife will have had her 2nd dose just inside the 3-month window. Does this mean that I would need to get a Covid test done within 72 hours of our departure for Kona or fear quarantine? Hopefully, this will change.
Mahalo,
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Michael.
We just don’t know yet. There will be more data coming out soon that might give a further indication to the CDC about that 90-day thing. And we too hope that it will be much longer since that isn’t workable for travel planning.
Aloha.

This is not fair for front line workers who had there 2nd dose in the beginning of January I am suppose to be going to hawaii April 29th everything is already paid for
BARBARA M
BTW… Just to add to the difficulty of coordinating vaccination within three months of Hawaii travel (and putting yourself at risk in the meantime)… This is important to know…
If for any reason you receive a steroid shot (i.e., bad back, bad knee, etc) you cannot get the Covid vaccine within two weeks of that shot – not two weeks before and not two weeks after the steroid! Steroids deplete the effectiveness of the vaccine.
So on top of all the other scheduling nightmares, if you are ancient as I am and get steroid shots for just about every joint in my body….
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Barbara.
Thanks for that. It’s the first we’d heard about steroid shots but it makes sense.
Aloha.
BARBARA M
BOH: I’m having to get (have already gotten) steroid shots for my newly discovered arthritis in hip, elbow and back. And over and over the doctors and nurses ask “have you received the covid vaccine”. I thought it a curious question until they explained to me that steroids interfere with any vaccine unless there is a two week gap in time.
BARBARA M
The concept is fantastic! HOWEVER>>> As difficult as it is to obtain a vaccination right now, trying to plan it and be within the three month window will be even more difficult to coordinate. My state has a registration system. I’ve been registered since December with no vaccination in sight! Because I am one year short of age 75, my eligibility group hasn’t even yet been opened and there is no timeline to anticipate. My age group (65+) is in “Phase 1C”. At this point the state is only administering vaccines to “Phase 1A” folks! “Phase 1B” is 75+. I could actually luck out since we’re not coming to Kauai until mid-July but that’s a heck of a challenge to meet!

I received my second shot on Feb 5, so a 3month time frame is approximately May 5. Does that mean that if they open to the mainland on May 1 I don’t qualify a a vaccinated person and still have to go through all the testing and or quarantine steps? So what good was getting the vaccine to travel?????
BarryR
Too many rules, exceptions, requirements, potential unexpected changes… All so we can travel to Kauai – a beautiful island that may or may not have operating restaurants, T-shirt shops, Luau’s, shave ice stands or tours – all things we enjoy when we come to Kauai. Too much uncertainty to make the trip. Thanks for the information though!
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Barry.
You’re welcome. For better or worse, there will be many changes ahead both here on Kauai, in Hawaii, and in global travel.

What is the use of commenting. Just a fake web site to let people vent.
I have read the rules I will not comment until Feb23 when I have my 2 Nd shot . I am going to ask the doctors at the clinic what they know about the life of my vaccination. How long is it good for. I will let you know so you can pass it on to Dr Green.

I fortunately will receive my first vaccine 2/27 and the second 3/03
which allows me to travel April 20-27 due to me being within the 3 month timeframe just announced. Can I get excited anticipating I can travel without paying $205.00 for the Covid test within 72 hrs. of my last leg of departure from DFW with my fully vaccinated Covid documents? Thank you BOH. You are my coffee buddy each morning as I read travel updates.
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Pamela.
Thanks for joining us for coffee! That isn’t clear, but there is a reason for at least some optimism in that regard. More to come.

After researching the reference to a three month period for the vaccine I found the following information with regard to the three month reference to the vaccine:
“However, vaccinated persons with an exposure to someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 are not required to quarantine if they meet all of the following criteria†:
* Are fully vaccinated (i.e., ≥2 weeks following receipt of the second dose in a 2-dose series, or ≥2 weeks following receipt of one dose of a single-dose vaccine);
* Are within 3 months following receipt of the last dose in the series; and
* Have remained asymptomatic since the current COVID-19 Interim considerations”
I did not see any reference to the fact that the three month period for those vaccinated only affects individuals with exposure to someone who has symptoms or a confirmed case of COVID during the first three months after completing a vaccination series.
Reference: CDC.gov; Vaccines and Immunizations; mRNA COVID-19 Vaccinations; Summary of Recent Changes (last updated February 10, 2021).

Okay…let me get this straight…our esteemed Governor is going to consider thinking about the possibility that the ‘science’ will be a solution to let folks travel to his state and breathe life into the dying economy that he’s been charged with?. He’s really getting on this quickly…We’ve only been shut down for a full year and an entire island (Kauai) has been devastated to the tune of countless businesses and locals future prospects, never mind any property owners that are completely upside down because of his inept governance. Now, we’ve come up with the decision that even if you’ve been vaccinated you are also in the penalty box if it’s been more than ninety days after the second vaccination. So, if you can get all the stars to lined up right and can only vacation within the 90 days after the second vaccination yet two weeks after that vaccination, you can visit without quarantine…seriously? This is the solution?..you can continually come up with roadblocks if you never want tourism to return. Few people will go through such hurdles and simply go elsewhere. Remember, vacation is not a necessity, and it should be a happy experience, not a head banging effort. Isn’t that the whole point of going on vacation..to relax and be happy leaving their stressful existence behind for a bit?

I have been to the Caribbean several times during this plandemic…..It truly is beautiful and the locals LOVE my dollars! No more ALOHA for me!

Oh man, while I know you are simply relaying information I find this incredibly sad and discouraging. Here I was so excited as we had just received our second vaccines last week and we were looking forward to summer travel. I’m just not ok with booking with so much up in the air and some of these crazy rules with Hawaii that appear to be ever changing. It is with a heavy heart I will be booking elsewhere this summer. I fear this really is going to drive this beautiful yet travel dependent state into the ground. Thanks as always for the info.
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Laura.
Feeling the same way here. Many of us who live in Hawaii and would like to finally visit family on the mainland. With vaccinations coming right up, we hope it will work. Fingers crossed with you.
Aloha.
Tommy C
When you say “Vaccinations are valid for 3 months” does this mean that if your 2nd dose of a vaccine was taken on May 1, then you can only travel until August 1 without any testing? Does this mean that you would have to get vaccinated every 3 months in order to travel to Hawaii at any time? Please expand on this.
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Tommy.
This is initial information based on the two things we mentioned – last week’s CDC guidance, and the State of Hawaii’s current 90-day testing requirement waiver based on having had COVID. We are awaiting clarification.
Aloha.
Edward N
I think we will see you again in about 5 years when you can figure it out. The world has a lot of options and Hawaii isn’t worth the effort. Some day you may realize how much you crippled your state.
sean
Trust me, those of us who have the ability to think for ourselves already know how screwed up Hawaii is. The sheep and “Hawaii til I die” members will claim everything is great, but it’s not..
Food lines, closed businesses, behind on mortgage payments, etc. Hawaii is living off free money, hoping to hide the fact the economic doom will come.
Hawaii’s only solution this whole time was to hope for a vaccine. There never was a plan or consideration that maybe, just maybe, we live with the virus, accept the consequences an get on with life. After all, remember when this was about the hospitals? We were never even close to over running the system. Just imagine if we were still a year or two away from a vaccine!!
John C
You people realize that you’re destroying the backbone of your economy, right? If this nonsense keeps up, you will be out of business for at least a decade, by which time people will have changed their travel destinations permanently. Probably the worst mismanagement of all time.
sean
agreed!

Hi BOH Bros
Since I’m relatively new to BOH today on youtube I viewed Hawaiian Islands | A Film by Thomas A. Edison Shot in 1906. Looks as if it was posted on youtube a little over 3 years ago, but is trending on other travel sites.
Wondering if you’ve seen it?
As per the subject at hand travel as we knew it before covid is never going to be the same. Covid is never going away it will be no different then flu or pneumonia, but instead of seasonal covid will be a year round thing.
By now if you’re not planning your travel around new covid norm’s then shame on you. The only person to blame for screwing up your trip is you.
Thank god for these early vaccines given us 90 days of protection, in the coming years new treatments and vaccines will come out giving us longer protection and better survival rates.
Until then be patient and make sure to book travel that can be 100 percent refunded.
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Richard.
Thanks for sharing that. We’ll definitely check it out. We appreciate your well over 100 comments!

Again, a huge mahalo to Beat of Hawaii for the updates on the complete insane double talk from the “Leaders” of the State of Hawaii.
On a day that had reports from the CDC stating that people who receive the vaccine may still be able to pass the virus to others, I’m completely baffled by these happenings.
I am so thankful for you guys and your dedication to keep others informed.
You truly epitomize selflessness and courage in reporting.
Stay blessed.
Much Aloha🌺

Just not a good thing
Steven S.
I’m so confused! We are planning a late-April trip. The “Vaccination Rules” for mainlanders are scheduled to begin May 1st? So if we’re fully vaccinated within 2 weeks of our arrival date, we STILL need to show a Negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of departure from California?
Mahalo!
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Steven.
While we will need guidance from the state to confirm that, it appears to be the case. Stay tuned for more information.
Aloha.
Sheryl B
Basically what they will be doing with this 3 month rule is encouraging people who want to travel to put off getting vaccinated until shortly before their trip. Wow….talk about discouraging people to vaccinate now so we can get this mess behind us! No one has made the statement that the vaccine is only good for 3 months, so where is this time frame coming from? Has there ever been a vaccine that you could be given more than once a year? To me this is just another way for the governor to say they have opened up the state while still drastically limiting the number of tourists who can come there without quarantining. In my book, getting this virus under control as soon as possible means getting folks vaccinated as soon as possible. That is way more important than trying to appease Gov Ige.
BARBARA M
Sheryl B…
Actually, the CDC HAS said that they know the vaccine is good for three months. Most likely it will prove to be a longer time frame but at this point, that is all they feel they can guarantee. And I agree with you 1000%. Our state has a “registration” system and I’ve been “registered” and anxiously waiting since December. So now I have to hope they ignore me until May so our travel will be within three months! In the meantime I remain vulnerable! LOGIC????
Judy
Wow
This is the first I have heard that the vaccine is good for only 3 months!
So how many times should a person be able to get vaccinated? How much vaccine can a body take?
There aren’t enough vaccines for everyone to get two shots/ as required.
So for every trip within 3 months a person must get vaccinated…
Crazy’
BARBARA M
AMEN!
DebraM
So you are saying a person has to be vaccinated within the 3 month period to travel over there. If I get the vaccine this month and I travel there in October, I have to get another vaccine? With the shortages of the vaccine, how is this going to be possible to do? How would getting vaccinated a few times this year affect one’s health?
Guy C
The 3 month window makes it a non starter for me. I will be fully vaccinated in 2 weeks. My trip is scheduled for October. Who knows if we will be able to get a second round of complete vaccinations. We have been to Kauai at least once a year for the last 19 years. I think it’s time to go somewhere else.
Bob G
😎Had our second vaccination a week ago, which means we could travel within 3 months of that shot. Well our reservations are not till july 3rd. Hopefully they will have this sorted out by then, if not….. 🥺
jim B
So what is needed to travel after 3 months from vaccination date? A booster?
Will such be available?
How do you plan a summer trip? Or Fall, or next Holiday season? Hoping for “Herd Immunity”?
Still not very smart.
If on the other hand, the guidelines stated “travel within the time limits approved by CDC”, then the risk might be more reasonable as the CD goes public with their recommendations faster than our leadership reacts. It would be 3 months now. But as data on effectiveness becomes more available it could expand.
Just saying….
Paul N
Insane, but Hawaii has gone off the deep end. Oh well there are other Pacific destinations.
Kathy S
they are saying you can only travel within 3 months of getting the vaccine, what if you got it in February and want to travel in October? You cannot come to Hawaii?
Kym V
Thank you for the vaccination travel update. It appears only thing different forthese travelers is no test to come over and no quarantine if exposed. Over the weekend it was reported 4 people in Oregon who were all past their 2 weeks after receiving their final shot contracted Covid. How’s that going to work if HI still has concerns?
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Kym.
Thanks. Yes, lots of details to still get figured out.
Aloha.
Goldie C
Hawaii is ridiculous. Not everyone can take vaccines. In fact this vaccine has not been recommended to certain people due to other medical conditions. If I have to have a vaccine to travel to Hawaii then I may NEVER travel to Hawaii again. I own 3 properties in Hawaii, one on Kauai and two on the Big Island. Once again, the idiots running the state are shooting themselves in the foot but they don’t care.
KeidraT
Hi. So will the option to provide negative Covid testing still be an option? My trip is in May and I’m not sure if we’ll meet the vaccine requirements. Thanks
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Keidra.
Yes, that’s what the Lt. Gov. has stated multiple times.
Aloha.
Gary S
So, I’m scheduled to visit Kauai on July 28. We are getting vaccinated in mid-March and then 4 weeks later. The vaccinations won’t count…what?!
Anyway, mahalo for the latest update.
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Gary.
Lots more will be revealed before your Kauai summer vacation. The CDC 90-day guidance, issued last week, relates only to COVID exposure and not to travel specifically. But it offers an indication that CDC is saying that vaccine validity can only be assured for 3 months. How that will directly relate to travel is still to be announced. Also, the state currently has an exemption from Safe Travels requirements for those who have recovered from COVID. There too, it is exclusively for those who have recovered within the past 90 days. When there is more information indicating validity beyond 90 days (hopefully), then that should change.

I could actually luck out since we’re not coming to Kauai until mid-July but that’s a heck of a challenge to meet!
ALOHA,
I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for your informative and relevant website. Having lived in Hawaii and doing business in the islands it’s very important to me to stay informed with what’s happening in Hawaii. Your doing a great job keep up the good work !!!
Best Regards,
GY.
Hi Gary.
Thanks very much for saying that, we appreciate it. Hope to see you back again on Beat of Hawaii and in Hawaii soon.
Aloha.
I received my second shot on Feb 5, so a 3month time frame is approximately May 5. Does that mean that if they open to the mainland on May 1 I don’t qualify a a vaccinated person and still have to go through all the testing and or quarantine steps? So what good was getting the vaccine to travel?????
Too many rules, exceptions, requirements, potential unexpected changes… All so we can travel to Kauai – a beautiful island that may or may not have operating restaurants, T-shirt shops, Luau’s, shave ice stands or tours – all things we enjoy when we come to Kauai. Too much uncertainty to make the trip. Thanks for the information though!
Hi Barry.
You’re welcome. For better or worse, there will be many changes ahead both here on Kauai, in Hawaii, and in global travel.
Aloha.
True!
There must be a computer answering these comments. No answers are ever given. Just thank you’s
What is the use of commenting. Just a fake web site to let people vent.
Hi Dennis.
Have you read our comment policy?
Aloha.
I have read the rules I will not comment until Feb23 when I have my 2 Nd shot . I am going to ask the doctors at the clinic what they know about the life of my vaccination. How long is it good for. I will let you know so you can pass it on to Dr Green.
DENNIS T… There’s a very simple answer – get off the site if you find it of no use! Many many many of us have benefited from the information we gather here and will continue to do so in spite of you!
Hi Barbara.
Thanks. You’re Da Bomb.
Aloha. R/J
Hi Pamela.
Thanks for joining us for coffee! That isn’t clear, but there is a reason for at least some optimism in that regard. More to come.
Aloha.
After researching the reference to a three month period for the vaccine I found the following information with regard to the three month reference to the vaccine:
“However, vaccinated persons with an exposure to someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 are not required to quarantine if they meet all of the following criteria†:
* Are fully vaccinated (i.e., ≥2 weeks following receipt of the second dose in a 2-dose series, or ≥2 weeks following receipt of one dose of a single-dose vaccine);
Hi Laura.
Feeling the same way here. Many of us who live in Hawaii and would like to finally visit family on the mainland. With vaccinations coming right up, we hope it will work. Fingers crossed with you.
Aloha.
Hi Tommy.
This is initial information based on the two things we mentioned – last week’s CDC guidance, and the State of Hawaii’s current 90-day testing requirement waiver based on having had COVID. We are awaiting clarification.
Aloha.
I think we will see you again in about 5 years when you can figure it out. The world has a lot of options and Hawaii isn’t worth the effort. Some day you may realize how much you crippled your state.
You people realize that you’re destroying the backbone of your economy, right? If this nonsense keeps up, you will be out of business for at least a decade, by which time people will have changed their travel destinations permanently. Probably the worst mismanagement of all time.
agreed!
Hi Richard.
Thanks for sharing that. We’ll definitely check it out. We appreciate your well over 100 comments!
Aloha.
Much Aloha🌺
Hi Pam.
Thank you so much! It is hard to keep on top of this, and we appreciate you being apart of that process.
Aloha.
Just not a good thing
I’m so confused! We are planning a late-April trip. The “Vaccination Rules” for mainlanders are scheduled to begin May 1st? So if we’re fully vaccinated within 2 weeks of our arrival date, we STILL need to show a Negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of departure from California?
Mahalo!
Hi Steven.
While we will need guidance from the state to confirm that, it appears to be the case. Stay tuned for more information.
Aloha.
LOGIC????
Wow
This is the first I have heard that the vaccine is good for only 3 months!
So how many times should a person be able to get vaccinated? How much vaccine can a body take?
There aren’t enough vaccines for everyone to get two shots/ as required.
So for every trip within 3 months a person must get vaccinated…
Crazy’
AMEN!
The 3 month window makes it a non starter for me. I will be fully vaccinated in 2 weeks. My trip is scheduled for October. Who knows if we will be able to get a second round of complete vaccinations. We have been to Kauai at least once a year for the last 19 years. I think it’s time to go somewhere else.
😎Had our second vaccination a week ago, which means we could travel within 3 months of that shot. Well our reservations are not till july 3rd. Hopefully they will have this sorted out by then, if not….. 🥺
Insane, but Hawaii has gone off the deep end. Oh well there are other Pacific destinations.
they are saying you can only travel within 3 months of getting the vaccine, what if you got it in February and want to travel in October? You cannot come to Hawaii?
Thank you for the vaccination travel update. It appears only thing different forthese travelers is no test to come over and no quarantine if exposed. Over the weekend it was reported 4 people in Oregon who were all past their 2 weeks after receiving their final shot contracted Covid. How’s that going to work if HI still has concerns?
Hi Kym.
Thanks. Yes, lots of details to still get figured out.
Aloha.
Hi. So will the option to provide negative Covid testing still be an option? My trip is in May and I’m not sure if we’ll meet the vaccine requirements. Thanks
Hi Keidra.
Yes, that’s what the Lt. Gov. has stated multiple times.
Aloha.
So, I’m scheduled to visit Kauai on July 28. We are getting vaccinated in mid-March and then 4 weeks later. The vaccinations won’t count…what?!
Anyway, mahalo for the latest update.
