  1. Travelling this weekend to Honolulu and from there flying to Big Island. Heard that US citizen may need a passport to enter a few locations/parks in either island or to even fly to Big Island. is this true? is there any need at all for a passport for US citizens while visiting Hawaii, or does a state Driver’s License do?

Really appreciate your feedback, as to we do not want to miss on anything if we don’t bring our passports along.

    1. Hi Ana.

Passports will never be required for you in Hawaii under any circumstances. That’s incorrect information you received.

      Aloha.

  2. My best items were a great pair pf hiking sandals and UVA/UVB ray blocking shirts for my husband and beach cover ups for me. We stayed in a time share style setting. So we had a full kitchen and were able to stop at Costco for a lot of our food. We also purchased a beach umbrella for $29.99 Totally worth it and passed it alone to a family arriving as we left. The hawaiin coffee at coscto is great to bring home so stock up while there. The Large yet tiny when folded quick dry towels were a must ha

  3. I pack my clothes (rolled up) inside cotton musette bags that I bought many years ago in Europe. They were sold at the supermarkets there and we can use them in Hawaii when we go grocery shopping.

I’ve always used refillable bottles for shampoo, laundry and dish soap; although my wife has recently bought the laundry soap sheets from Grove.com. Each sheet is good for a full load. My dentist gives small kits of toothpaste, mouthwash and floss. We take those; it’s more than enough for a week.

  4. A self-inflating roll up seat cushion is a must for me they work great, and don’t take up very much space in your carry-on. Google will give you a lots of choices

    1. Nail clippers are OK AFAIK. I’ve carried them with me on all my trips for the past 30+ years, and they have never been confiscated.

    2. I’ve had nail files confiscated, but not nail clippers. But that was when I was leaving Mexico. Never have I had a nail file confiscated anywhere else.

  5. A small pair of binoculars is a great item to have. Watching surfing to watching whales, or just surveying the scenery it’s nice to bring the sights up just a little bit closer, and a small pair takes minimal space.

  6. I always bring my Sandcloud towel/blanket. It keeps me warm on the plane, and it is a fantastic beach towel – very absorbent, and the sand doesn’t stick to it. It rolls up pretty small, and tucks easily into small spaces. You can also use it on the flight home to cushion souvenirs packed into your luggage.

  7. Here are some things that I always pack for our trips to Hawaii:
RipSkirts – they dry quickly, and take up no space in the suitcase.

Ugowear- like a life jacket for your phone. You can use all the functions of your phone while it is in the Ugo, and it floats! I put my keys, cash, credit cards, and chapstick in mine when we go to the beach. I can take it in the water with me. It is seriously the coolest thing!

  8. We have a trip planned to BI in May other than a barely legal mask and cloths on my body I’m planning on packing nothing. My wife says I’m crazy I prefer insane, but last I heard Hawaii is a State in the United States of America where if you forget anything you can buy it at Walmart or Costco. It’s 2022 not 1973 my first trip to Hawaii, by the way I was just an email that all covid mandates will end on April 30 in California. Stick your N95 mask where the sun don’t shine.

  9. I’m glad to see them doing away with the small plastic shampoo/conditioner/lotion bottles. I’ve stopped using them for years. So environmentally unfriendly.

  10. Aloha! I’m a long time reader and I wanted to add to your comment about wearing high quality face masks now that they’re readily available. I’ve tried 30+ different brands and the Korean KF94 face masks are worth looking into. Their “boat” shape keeps the mask away from your mouth and the ear straps are really comfortable (some models even adjust). Bluna Facefit, BOTN, Dr. Puri and Cleantop Evergreen were tested by the “Mask Nerd” and found to exceed 98% filtration.
    Mahalo!

  11. Do people have to upload their cdc vaccine card to the safe travels website every time people go to Honolulu
    Thank
    You

    1. On the 90th hand, print out all the validation Qcodes, etc. you receive; not trying to find them online while standing in line with your phone or tablet trying to shut down will save you many headaches. Trying to pull up SafeTravels on the way back from Mexico on sketchy wi-fi was no bueno! Luckily, we had printed out the passcodes, which saved our bacon.

  12. We are adding a couple of things:
-A few laundry soap pods and dryer sheets from home
-Reusable grocery bags as there are no plastic bags at stores
-Plastic storage bags variety from home
-We are primarily Kauai folks and have a favorite Wal-Mart that is our first stop upon landing – great for beach gear, foodstuffs, new towels and snacks.

  13. Thanks, we have a check list we’ve been using for 17+ years (modified over the years) that is very similar and it’s made the trip much easier every time. This is great to have so neatly laid out for travelers. We’ll add a few new items from yours for our upcoming trip in May.😁

  14. If you plan ro being a pair of shoes/boots here and leave (as the article states), please ensure that you’re not bringing your old footwear to throw in the trash while you are here. If the footwear is serviceable and nice, feel free to donate it as we have many people in need here but please, please, PLEASE, don’t bring stuff (future trash/rubbish) here with the intent of leaving it in on of our delightful landfills. We don’t want it, we don’t need it and we don’t have the space for it! Mahalo!

  15. Water shoes. Although the beaches in Hawaii look so inviting, and most of them are, there are many that have coral not far from shore. It would take only one sliced open foot or ankle to make you head straight for some of these. They’re also good for some of the excursions like kayaking, zodiac boats, even hiking in the muddy rain forests during the winter months. Also, if you bring sunscreen into Hawaii, only get reef safe sunscreen. All sunscreens sold in Hawaii are now reef safe.

  16. Good advice here…I always wear light compression socks on the plane. I wear a longer sundress and put the socks on once I’m settled and seated for the flight and then take them off when we land. No swelling! We live in AZ 🌺
