  1. We want to fly from Knoxville, TN to Maui on May 24th, and return to Knoxville from Honolulu on June 3rd. Any suggestions for the best deal? Currently the best I see is $1016 per person.
    Thanks for any help!
    Tim

    1. Hi Tim.

Prices might come down some for your dates. However, we note that with best connections it will probably still be over $1,000. If you don’t mind spending an extra 6 hours or more, prices might go as low as $650.

      Aloha.

  2. Hello,

I am planning a trip from New York to the Big Island in September/October. Is there a difference in airfare if I leave on a week day versus a weekend?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Kim.

At present there is little difference. Should there be an airfare sale however, it might not apply to weekend travel. Would wait until spring to buy.

      Aloha.

  3. Aloha!
We are planning to travel from Portland (PDX) to Maui (OGG) in November around Thanksgiving. We travel every other year at this time. Usually we get flights about $700-800 non-stop, but we’re only seeing nearly $1500 this year. Why is it so expensive, and can we expect a change?
    Thank you,
    Andrew

    1. Hi Andy.

Price you mention is for the nonstop. There should be room for that to come down if you wait. But on the same hand there is very limited availability. Are you willing to take a connecting flight to potentially save several hundred per person?

  4. Hello am planing a trip to Maui the whole month of Jan 2018. I will be fly out of DTW . Going rent condo was wondering when is best time to buy tickets will be flying delta. Also which do you think is cheaper flying out New Year’s Eve or day. Thank you so much.

    1. Hi Lee.

It depends on when you plan to fly. If you can wait until after the holiday crowd returns home – middle of first week, then suggest waiting until probably this fall for best pricing. If you need to fly on say January 1 or some early January specific date, then you might want to buy when first available. December 31 and January 1 are sometimes cheaper, but the way it falls in terms of day of week, that may not be true next year.

      Aloha.

      Aloha.

  5. Good Morning, We are planning a trip to Kona from Lexington, KY (LEX) arriving in Kona (KOA) on 4/1 and departing Kona on 4/8. So far fares have been in the $1,400 range with 2 stops, typically Houston or Chicago, then LAX. Is this the best scenario that we can expect? I do see a flight from Cincinnati (CVG) to Hilo for the low $1,300s. I’m not crazy about landing in Hilo (ITO) at 8pm local time and driving 2 hours but there are 6 of us so the savings would add up fast. We were also looking at flying out of Louisville (SDF) via Southwest to a west coast city and booking a separate reservation to Kona. Is this a viable option? We are also trying to keep the total travel time around 15-16 hours vs the high 20s that I see on some flights. I realize this list is a bit extensive. At the end of the day if we have to fork out $1,400 we will do so, but want to make it’s not likely that we are leaving money on the table either. Thank you very much for your feedback and insight.

    1. Hi Jeremy.

For your specific high-season, spring break, weekend dates, cheapest of CVG or LEX is definitely LEX. $867 to get in at 8pm as you noted. To get in earlier, you’ll pay a few hundred more. Don’t think you’re missing anything, and because you’ve picked some of the most prime spring break dates, there is no reason to expect price to go down. If it does that would occur rather last minute.

      Aloha.

      1. Thank you all very much for the feedback. If I could ask one more follow-up question, I would be very appreciative. The $867 rate is much lower than any rate I’ve been able to find. I am admittedly a novice in booking airfare. Is there a particular booking engine or source I should be using to find rates? I’ve currently been shopping kayak and some of the other OTAs as well as the airline sites. Thanks again!

        1. Good Morning, I am just checking to see if you all have had a chance to look at my 2nd question. If not, no worries. On kayak I’m currently seeing $1,125 for Cincinnati to Hilo.

          1. Hi again.

So on united airlines website we are finding $1,064 CVG-ITO for your dates And also finding there KOA at $923 but with long layover in LAX. Or $1,222+ as your shorten the duration to KOA. All on United.

Concur that that drive at night after long flights is far less than ideal.

            Aloha.

        2. Hi Jeremy,

Just circling back with you. Sorry for the delay. Were you able to find anything? As of today, prices for your dates have gone up substantially. Cheapest anything near your dates is $1,050 on United two days later departure and return.

Let us know if we can help. Don’t think one search engine or another will likely yield different results.

          Aloha.

  6. I am taking my 2 grandsons to Maui in April – Tickets seem a bit high? Do you think prices will come down or should I go ahead and book. Average price is $750.00. Thank You for any input. My first time booking to Hawaii

    1. Hi Penny.

Not enough details like where you are flying from and what dates. But generally, first half of month is high season due to spring break. Second half is less costly.

      Aloha.

  7. I’m hoping to get some input please. We’re planning on flying roundtrip to Mauii (OGG) in Sept of this year from Tulsa, OK. Right now it appears the best flight option would be American Airlines which has a flight that only stops in Dallas before proceeding to OGG & cost is currently showing $980 or so for Sept time frame. I have trouble with my ears if there are too many ups & downs so I’d prefer not to have any more than 1 stop when flying there. I know Tulsa isn’t a huge market to fly from, but still yet, wondering if I should just go ahead & book now to secure the flight we need or would it be smarter to wait & see if fare comes down at all. I’d appreciate any feedback you can provide. Thank you!

    1. Hi Melissa,

Potential best price is low $700’s in that market, but with only 1 stop best is mid $900’s. Not likely to go down if you wait.

      Aloha.

  8. What dates are considered ‘Spring Break’ in Hawaii this year? Trying to get to Merrie Monarch this year in Hilo from AZ. Your insight is appreciated. Mahalo!

  9. Why are flights to Honolulu from Seattle for June so high right now? I’m assuming they’ll come down. I’ve never paid more than $600, and they’re hovering around $900 now. Seems absolutely ridiculous.
