  1. Hello! I am stressing trying to figure out the most affordable way to travel to Kauai during thanksgiving week 2016. It is a family trip. Four of us leave from DTW and two from OAK or SFO. Should the DTW folks book RT to SFO and a separate booking for six of us from SFO to LIH? Or should the DTW crew book straight thru to LIH. Any insight will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

    1. Hi Jane.

Rule of thumb is that if the DTW people aren’t doing a real stopover, it is better logistically and in terms of cost to just meet up in Hawaii. That way there will be no issues with miss connections, or baggage rechecking and security (if using multiple tickets).

      Aloha.

  2. Does United ever put fights to Honolulu or Maui on sale? Please advise what is best time of year from Houston.
    Mahalo!

    1. Hi Al,

Not so much. The reason is that Houston is their hub, so sales from Houston to Hawaii are usually on their competitors who are attacking that hub. Fall and spring is the best time.

      Aloha.

  3. We are looking to go visit friend on Kauai in around April 10 2017, we are flying out of Salt Lake City, UT. Any advice on when would be a good time to book for that and what a good price might be?

  4. Hi!

I’m looking to book a flight for me and my sister 12/13-12/21 from Dallas (probably fly to a gateway city with cheaper fares). Do you foresee any winter/holiday sales coming up or should I just buy right now?

    Thanks,
    Tam

    1. Hi Tam.

Those dates will be problematic and there will be no deals. Since you didn’t say, we checked HNL as the destination, and fares are from $799 (Delta with one stop, good connection) to $1,014 (American nonstop). Suggest buying now.

      Aloha.

  5. Hello, please advise the best time to buy roundtrip from San Diego to KOA for Oct. 12th travel. Wanting non stop of course or could possibly do one quick layover. Thank you.

    1. Hi Jackie.

Not a very competitive route. Prices start in the mid $400’s but with either two stops or long layover. Reasonable routing starts at $550. If you want nonstop you have to fly on the 13th on Alaska for $528 RT as that doesn’t operate on the 12th. Prices might improve if you wait and certainly no harm in doing so (except for nonstop which could have availability issues) for your low season dates. When might that happen? No one knows that answer.

      Aloha.

  6. ‘Not sure how I really feel about labeling my home airport (SMF) “unusual”…. as in the email header, “Airfare Sales from Unusual Cities….” 😉 But it *is* the state capitol, so perhaps “unusual” is an appropriate descriptor….

    1. Hi Tonya.

Ha. Well sad but true – deals from Sacramento to Hawaii have become unusual.

      Aloha.

      1. Ginger, Sorry so late answering this but just now saw it. I just watched fares pretty much on a daily basis leaving from CVG DAY and IND + once in a while I would check COL and LEX. You really really need to be able to check frequently since prices can change sooo much in such a short period of time. My flight is on American and I found that right on their website. Hope you have or will soon find a great deal too! Have fun in Hawaii!!

  8. Gah! I hesitated too long on booking the East Coast flights in the 600’s yesterday. Would you expect another flash sale for October/November?

  9. There was an awesome deal from Chicago to Honolulu this past May. The lowest prices I’ve ever seen. Any more Chicago deals this year? Deals out of ORD seem few and far between– why is that?

      1. Hi Tina.

Best prices for purchase at this time are from $758 on Delta (3 stops), and $812 on Alaska. American(fastest connection) is nearer $900. It could go lower and would be best to wait. No rush as little demand in off season.

        Aloha.
