  1. I got my refund after I filed a claim with the BBB after I exhausted all options. I called, I even emailed Hawaiian. They claimed that the rescheduled flight is within 6 hours of my original flight, they are not required to refund my money. I followed the suggestion of another flyer on this site and filed my claim with both the DOT and BBB. I was notified of the refund within a week.

  2. I know a lot of people have been asking or commenting on refunds. I had a travel scheduled for July 2-July 13 from JFK to HNL to OGG. When I called in May to cancel our trip and request refunds we were only able to get an e-credit because the flights had not been cancelled yet. At that time the agent told me if the flights do get cancelled I would be eligible for a full refund. Now that the flights have officially been cancelled I was able to call this morning and a refund is being processed. I was told it will take 1-2 billing cycles for the refund to show up. I had no issues with the agent when I called, they were pleasant and processed everything within 5 minutes. Very satisfied with the customer service and hope to see the refund soon.

  3. My daughter and her boyfriend live in Hawaii. They came for a visit to Texas in early April. This is the 4th time their flights have been canceled. How are they supposed to get home? Can you please let me know if the flights from island to island are open now? I think this time, that is the issue. They can fly into Maui but can’t get to the big island.

      There are inter-island flights. We aren’t able to address the issue, and you will need to be in contact with the airline via phone, or perhaps better, via direct messaging in social media.

  5. Please I have some questions to ask about flights in July. We Katherine and Steven M. are booked on a flight in July 2020 to Hawaii. Our flight number is from Sydney to Honolulu.

    Here in Australia everyone entering the country have to go into a 2 week isolation. We have heard Hawaii also have a 2 week isolation period.

    Firstly does Hawaii still have the 2 week isolation period, if so it is totally not worth coming at this stage as we are only going to Hawaii for 1 week. In light of the situation can you please advise me if you are offering refunds or credits? Due to our age we feel that this is not a good time for us to be leaving Australia. Can you please provide me with an update?

    1. Hi Katherine.

      Yes it is frustrating. There is still the 14-day period, but it is not clear whether that will be in effect for July. We only know it will be through June from all indications.

      Not clear what rules will be in effect, but unless your flight is canceled, we wouldn’t expect there to be a refund offered.

  6. I contact Hawaiian Airlines for my May 23 trip to Hawaii, and they have not cancelled my flight; however, they rerouted me to LAX==>HNL. The original flight was LGB==>HNL. They sent me to https://www.hawaiianairlines.com/cao and select “make a request”. For the topic, put “Refund” and for the subtopic, use “other”. I submitted the form and we will see what the Airline states.

    Are you eligible for a refund if the Airline changes your Airport?

  7. Aloha, This is not airfare related but I do not see a topic yet on your page to pose the question. Could you please assist with advice on how to get a Prepaid Car rental cancellation without fees applied? I see that on May 5th the Hawaiian Governor signed an order that anyone under quar antine orders would not be allowed to rent a car and any company that did would be subject to fines. I have two prepaid rentals coming up and clearly I would be under quar antine if I got on my plane. I have called Avis 800 number as well as opening online chat and nobody seems to be aware of this order. I called the rental desk in Maui and they know about the order, but they cannot help me because reservation is pre paid. They tell me I have to cancel through corporate, which as I stated, does not seem aware of the order. Fees are only $50 per reservation if I cancel before the 13th, but this is a state mandate and I don’t see how I should be forced to pay that penalty. Your site has been very calming and helpful through the pan demic and I am hoping that you can offer some guidance in this scenario as well. Thankyou very much and stay safe

      Thank you. Yes we have heard this about rental cars but do not have any further clarification unfortunately. Given the interesting situation, perhaps your credit card company would help with a refund of any charge. Sorry to not have anything further to add, but perhaps someone else will give a hand here.

      1. Thankyou. Actually I was able to get a refund without fees by filling in a website comment page on avis.com. I mentioned governors may 5th orders and they took care of it right away. People on the phone and chat just hadn’t been properly informed yet. So we have gotten refunds on everything except airfare so far. One last hurdle. Thanks

  8. Aloha! I was wondering if anyone has actually received a refund from Hawaiian airlines for a canceled flight or just a credit for future trips? I have a flight on July 2nd out of San Jose to HNL and I can postpone it and receive a future travel credit (which isn’t the end of the world—- Hawaii is my fav destination) but my husband would prefer a refund. Should I hold off until the flight is actually canceled or just go ahead and take it off the books?

      Thank you. It is only if the flight is canceled that you can get a refund. It isn’t clear to anyone yet whether that will happen for your July flight. We expect to know more this month.

      1. I think it is ridiculous at this time during a pan demic that they aren’t offering refunds for people who could use this credit towards you know… feeding their family or paying their rent. We are also scheduled for a flight July 2nd from NYC to HNL and unable to get a refund. Also the agent who I spoke with confirmed my reservation was canceled and e-credit issued but of course that didn’t happen and itinerary is still active on my account. I now have to call AGAIN. Super frustrating that the airlines are able to abuse the rules and their customers during such a difficult time for everyone.

    2. Hi Cyndi, we cancelled our trip scheduled from 5/17/20 thru 5/22/20 which had non-refundable tickets and were told we would get a refund within 14-21 days… still waiting. We had to pressure Hawaiian to refund since they still maintain that these flights are not cancelled; but anyone with some common sense understands that non-essential travel to Hawaii right now is ridiculous. We opted for a refund to completely re-schedule and re-plan our trip once all of this mess is truly over with. I was not comfortable with postponing as there is no legitimate timetable for when travel to the islands will be possible to truly enjoy the destination. Best of luck!

      1. Dominick, did you ever receive the refund from Hawaiian Airlines? Our direct flight from LAX to Maui was cancelled. We have been round and round with Hawaiian but we are continually told that we are not eligible for a refund. So frustrating!

        1. Sally, we have not gotten our refund yet. My wife called Hawaiian again on Saturday regarding the refund. The agent we got was very polite and helpful, saw all of the notes from our previous call and informed us that we should see the refund in our account within 2 weeks – we originally contacted Hawaiian over 2 months ago…. There own website indicates no flights other than 2 essential flights feom LAX and San Fran. You can also check the FAA records to see the flights. Our flight number had not flown since March! How can they make you pay for a flight that doesn’t fly?? Be persistent – I’ll try to update once we hopefully receive our refund in full.

          1. I got my full refund. File a complaint with HA Consumer’s Affairs. Once they reject you (which they will), note the rejection and all other ones in an email to BBB. Citing just Government regulations won’t work. Explain why traveling during this pan demic is not safe for your and family beings. At first, I didn’t want give them my whole life story because it’s none of their business. I thought government regulation was enough too. After I sent my email to HA and took that to BBB, within days, I got email from HA saying they will give me a full refund.

            And if that didn’t work, I read that others file a dispute with credit card com or bank. Good luck to both!

          2. Oh Wow!!! So under pressure to cancel our flights that departed this morning, last night I reluctantly cancelled and asked for credit, our only option, but at your suggestion, Ann, I went ahead and filed a complaint with the BBB last night. Heard from Hawaiian this afternoon, and they have granted us a refund. I am so happy. Of course, now we wait to see it. Thank you all for the advice and encouragement. I hope everyone gets a positive resolution.

Of course the direct flight was cancelled, but the new flight plan they rescheduled us for leaves in the morning. I want to hold out for a refund that numerous HA agents have said we aren’t eligible for, but what I need to find out is can I just leave everything as is and just don’t fly? Or do I need to cancel ahead of time to get any kind of credit if they continue to hold out on not issuing a refund? One agent told me that if I don’t cancel ahead of time we completely lose everything and can’t even rebook for later. I filed a complaint with the DOT 6/1, but haven’t heard anything.

          4. Sally – Do your research, there is a wealth of information to be found about the state of affairs. Hawaii is still enforcing the 14-day quar antine, this is direct from info on HA own website, updated earlier this month. Who, in their right mind, would take a non-essential trip to the islands with this still in place? That was part of our argument to HA when they tried to re-book us or have us postpone for vouchers for a future flight. How long will this last..? No one knows..

          5. I would strongly recommend you take two additional steps. The first is to file a complaint with the DOT. It is a very user friendly form and can easily be filed electronically. The website for the form is: https://airconsumer.dot.gov/escomplaint/ConsumerForm.cfm Additionally, I would file a dispute with your credit card company. Hawaiian Airlines continues to play egregious games with customers. My son had two flights completely cancelled by HA and they are still refusing the refund on the grounds they “re-accommodated” him. If you visit the website you will see it is abundantly clear that when they cancel flights they have to give a refund if the passenger requests it. Additionally the DOT also issued an “Enforcement Order” clarifying this position. Still HA refuses and claims they are complying with DOT. It is just ridiculous and I can’t imagine why any customer facing business that hopes to survive acts like this. I, personally, am never flying them again. Even inter-island, I will take my stop in Honolulu for interisland flights on Southwest before I will ever step foot on a Hawaiian flight again and I go once or twice every year.

          6. George – Agree 100%. HA is using verbiage like “suspended” not “cancelled” on their flights to avoid refunds which would be due from the DOT order. While I understand they are a corporate business looking to stay afloat and stop hemorrhaging money, it is completely ridiculous that they are making customers go through this on top of the disappointment of cancelling vacation plans as well as the uncertainty of these times. I’d be curious to see just how much bail-out money they received… I for one, will do everything I can to avoid flying them as well when (and if..) we decide to visit Hawaii again…

          7. Thank you for your responses. I filed a complaint with the DOT June 1st but have heard nothing from that. I was just told again by HA that I am not eligible for a refund for the cancelled flight, and that my only option is to take the credit they are offering. And that I must cancel the current flights in order to get the credit and if I don’t cancel before the flight time I lose it all. This is incredibly frustrating!

I did actually get a refund for them for one flight plus the separate inter-island reservation with the argument that if my flight to Hawaii was cancelled how could they expect me to be there for the inter-island flight. However it took over an hour on the phone with them for them to finally budge. Exact same situation on my son’s separately booked flight and they are stonewalling. Go figure. For myself, I think they are a band of thugs running this once great airline.

  9. Last week Hawaiian airlines extended their “April’s schedule” to May 20th. My sister’s flight leaves LAX to OGG on May 19, so she received an email from Hawaiian airlines giving her an option to cancel for a refund. Yesterday, Hawaiian airlines extended their “April’s schedule” to May 31st. My flight leaves LAX to OGG on May 21st, so I text them today to confirm if my flight was cancelled. They said it was not cancel and provided me a different schedule. My new schedule leaves LAX to HNL to OGG of which I did not know or agree to. I am frustrated because our flights are 2 days apart and my sister got the email to fill out a form for a refund while I am awaiting on a call from the re-accommodation desk. According to the DOT policy, I am entitled to a refund if the airline change my flight. I chose the direct flight because I did want to drag 2 young children from one to another flight. But all this does not matter, we were going to Hawaii for non-essential reasons. The wedding is now cancelled and our hotel is closed until May 31st. I just don’t understand, the governor does not want travelers going to Hawaii right now. Why is Hawaiian airlines not cancelling non-essential flights? Like most people in the country right now, I don’t need a credit, I just want my money back. Despite all ordeal my family and I been through losing our cars and part of our house due to a fire, I have been waiting patiently for the government orders to reflex my flight and yet they are making it impossible.

    1. Ann, they are doing the same thing to me. Same flight but mine leaves 5/16. Hawaiian Airlines is basically making their own rules and claiming it to be DOT rules by saying only if flight change is inconveniencing you 6 hours does it qualify for a refund. On top of that, I think they are inferring that it is the departure that must change by 6 hours. What is the most disturbing thing to me is that the State of Hawaii says incoming visitors are such huge potential carriers of this that they must self quar antine for 14 days upon arrival. However, it is perfectly ok to remove you from your direct flight to OGG and let you layover in Honolulu Airport for multiple hours unprotected with lots of other incoming guests that have to soon be quarantined. They know most people wont travel and are trying to manipulate us into cancelling our flights on our own. We get the waiver whether we cancel or not. However, once you cancel, you no longer have a possibility for a refund. Don’t fall for it. I highly recommend that you do not cancel unless they offer refund…in writing. I personally had Hawaiian Airlines submit a refund request, but it will be a month or two before they reply back…and I am not holding my breath that the reply will be any different from them. I have also filed a complaint with DOT, as well as, filing with my credit card company to pursue a refund. I was extremely polite with everyone that I talked to. I even made a counter offer to Hawaiian Airlines that if they wanted to hang onto my money for the two year waiver period, all they needed to do was make the waiver be without fare upcharges later. I didn’t even ask for refund if fares were lower. They laughed at me. So it is what it is. Don’t expect your money to come back without a fight and keep your eye on the class action lawsuit going on. We went through all of the frustration as others have mentioned where our direct flight to Maui was cancelled for a mid-May flight, while there was no acknowledgment of the cancellation until I asked the question at the end of April. I requested a refund as I was not interested in the alternate re-schedule through Honolulu where the flight was changed by 6 hours with a 5 1/2 hour layover in Honolulu. I communicated with HA via e-mail and multiple phone calls ( ~ 20X in total) expressing my desire for a refund and not accepting the alternate schedule. There was no compromise on HA part. I told them I was not accepting the schedule change, and sent in a formal complaint to DOT. Two days after the flight took off, HA sent an e-mail agreeing to refund the $. I received the refund 5 days after the e-mail. The DOT complaint was never communicated to me since filing it, and I have no idea if that helped my situation (no reply from DOT to my original complaint). In my opinion, DOT does not help the matter when they allow airlines to use their own determination as to when to officially cancel flights, and to use their own guidelines as to when a schedule change is deemed appropriate. It boggles my mind that DOT has not yet established new guidelines for a “world pan demic” that can cause possible death to people.

  10. I just called Hawaiian Airlines. They stated that all flights are cancelled until May 20. My flight leaves from Long Beach, CA to HNL on May 23, 2020. The lady on the phone stated to call next week and see if my flight is cancelled. If you try to book a flight on May 23, the website states that there are no flights. I will call next week (around 5/12) and update this post with an answer.

    May I ask, is it the presumption that if flights are due to resume in June then the Islands will be free of ‘lockdown’ and all the sights, shops and restaurants will be open?
    I have rearranged things for September staying at timeshare properties, so just checking to see what the thinking might be. I know it might require a little crystal gazing, but was just wondering.

  12. Why is Hawaiian Airlines saying my flight from Boston to Honolulu (HA89) is on scheduled? I just read on this site that they were not going to resume that flight until June 1st

    1. Because they are resisting using the word “cancelled” as it then requires them to refund if passenger requests that. I called and they won’t use the word. They ask, do YOU want to cancel. I took the credit for use within TWO years, I can work with that. Has to do with the US DOT definition as Beat of Hawaii has explained in a previous post.

      1. Here was our experience with HAL whole rebooking: they will not honor the fares that are on the web. Mainland to Kauai the fare for the new flight was $35.00 cheaper than the originally booked flight, they kept the $35.00. Inter island the fare on the web was $103, they wanted to charge me $114 and wanted to collect the difference. They claim that these are not change fees but that the public fares are for first time bookings only. I asked them to send me their published fare rule on that one and am still waiting two weeks later. We are fortunate and get to travel a lot. Due to a cancelled cruise, cancelled wedding and rearranged trip to Hawaii, I have dealt with six airlines (Alaska, American, Delta, Hawaiian, Southwest and United). Every single one other than Hawaiian has been gracious, easy to deal with and in two cases even generous (gave refunds when they could have given credits). Hawaiian has been perfectly awful in all respects and is totally ignoring DOT published rules. Once this trip is over will never use them again — ever. Will even take the stopover in Honolulu and fly Southwest inter island. Aloha spirit my ass.

Could you please tell me if there are any rules for how much advanced notice they must give for cancelations if any? I would expect at least two weeks since they are not operating my flight but are there any hard rules for that? Thankyou

      No we aren’t aware of any rules in that regard and you’ve undoubtedly seen what DOT told us about this. Hopefully the airlines’receiving permission from DOT to remove flights will expedite resolution to this frustrating and unexpected situation.

My flight is 5/28. per the information you provided above, our flight is cancelled and will not resume until 6/1. I asked Hawaiian for a refund, they will only give me a credit claiming that the flight is not cancelled and still in operation.

    1. Just wanted everyone to know that Hawaiian is trying to hold firm about the non-cancelling of flights, even going so far as to tell us “you can fly and stay in the 14-day quarantine” when trying to cancel our trip scheduled 5/17-5/22! The agent actually said that to my wife…
      There own website has the following disclaimer when you attempt to book a flight within our date range:
      “20055: We’re sorry but there are no flights available for this date. Due to the quarantine restrictions put in place by the State of Hawaii, we will be operating an extremely limited schedule”
      Don’t take no or re-schedule for and answer; the US government is giving the airlines our tax dollars to help deal with this. I want my refund no questions asked.

      1. Dominick L: I am in the same boat (plane) as you guys almost. My fly dates are supposed to be 5/10 return 5/16. I have heard it is a good plane to wait for the elusive “flight cancelled” email from Hawaiian Air. My flt is from SMF to HNL, HNL to LIU. So the word games with them goes on. I might call and say so if I show up at Sacrament airport I will be able to get on a HA flight to HNL ? and see what they say. If all fails I will file a complaint with US DOT, no doubt.

    Its hard to be happy about cancelling my trip to Kauai in May. But I am happy that I got a full refund for our direct flight from Houston to Honolulu May 20th on United. I called them about our flight that was no longer showing up on the website. They switched us to a flight through San Fran with no notice from them at all. So when I called them, they told me about the offer to extend the flight for 24 months with a travel voucher. So I told them what I learned on this site.

    **If you have reservations for a cancelled flight, US DOT states: “If your flight is cancelled and you choose to cancel your trip as a result, you are entitled to a refund for the unused transportation – even for non-refundable tickets. You are also entitled to a refund for any bag fee that you paid, and any extras you may have purchased, such as a seat assignment.” ***

    Thanks to you my full refund will be here in 21 days. And the direct flight from Houston is not cheap. once I told them this information from DOT, the agent just stopped talking about the voucher and said I would be refunded.

    We will have to celebrate our 25th anniversary in Texas this year. But Kauai, we will return.

      We have addressed the issues of cancelled flights vs. not on schedule flights, as regards multiple airlines. We can’t say for sure it is cancelled, since that information is not published. You can ask, or wait to hear. We should know a lot more by early May at the latest.
