  1. Even though Hawaiian has announced they will be cancelling our May 14 flight to Kauai, they still have yet to do so. My understanding is that we really need to wait until we are cancelled prior to requesting a refund. Why are they not cancelling flights that they’ve already announced will be cancelled?

  2. Aloha,
Thanks again for the great info.
So this means May 2 is officially canceled? I thought they had cancelled everything till mid May and spent a long time texting (2 days ago) only to be told mine was not cancelled.
My question: My trip was May 2 – June 14th. Will they refund the whole ticket or try to say no because the 14th is after the resume date? Your thoughts?
    Thanks again

    1. Hi Ane.

As far as we understand, everything other than the two “essential” flights had been officially cancelled even before this latest round. A prior comment asked a related question, where one of their travel dates was within the known flight stoppage and the other date was not. In their case they had two separate reservations. If this is on one PNR (reservation), then it should all get cancelled. Did you already try their online form for cancellation? In the end, if you don’t get an appropriate result, you can file a complaint with DOT. Someone reported yesterday that doing so for them resulted in a prompt refund. Not sure which airline that was.

      Aloha.

      1. Thanks!!! I did not contact DOT or my bank yet. What was so curious to me is that even tho they announced perviously all flights through mid May were cancelled, when I contacted them, they said they were not…..AND it was really hard to contact them. Had to jump thought a lot of hoops. Hope they mean it time. comparing this cancellation to Norwegian – WOW. that was straight-forward…!! One phone call, refund in 5 days.

Much Aloha to you both over there on Kauai. Stay safe and keep having some fun too.

        1. Hi Ane.

Much aloha to you as well. You’re a great part of our community.

We are hearing this from multiple people regarding different airlines. Perhaps they are just dragging their feet as much as possible to preserve cash, are overwhelmed dealing with closer in dates, or both. Not sure. Sorry you are having this experience!

  3. Aloha, my husband and I have 2 one way, OGG to HNL, HNL to BOS first class flights booked forMay5. OutgranddUghter was to graduate from Keene State College in NH, and we were going. But since. Both graduation and flights are cancelled, we will continue on here in Maui until it will be safe enough to return tío the Mainland for a summer vacation! My husbands trip was booked using accumulated HA miles, and protected by insurance, mine has been paid with $$. What steps shall we take to begin to process our refund of both miles and money. Mahalo for your help!

    1. Hi Judith.

Have you accessed the online change form found here, https://www.hawaiianairlines.com/OnlineTicketChanges? That’s a good place to start. If that doesn’t work to your satisfaction, as well as for the award ticket, you will probably need to contact the airline directly. Reaching airlines is frustrating and time-consuming at the moment, of course.

      Aloha.

  4. My flight was to be May 7th – not a word or email from Hawaiian air yet. I’m going to assume they are still working with the April cancellations. My challenge is that return ticket was for June 6th (each 1 way reservations). Obviously I can’t return from trip I didn’t take. Any suggestions on getting refund for June 6th flight?

I have timeshares so won’t have time until next year after the rebooking timeframe offered. Thank you, mahalo and stay safe.

    1. Hi Kathie.

It seems like the airline would let you cancel, although technically, unless the June 6 flight ultimately cancels as well (significant possibility of that happening), they would be under no obligation to do so.

      Aloha.

  5. Aloha!
Thank you for all the good advice on this site! We were booked to fly from PHX to HNL on Hawaiian Airlines on May 21, 2020 with a return flight from HNL to PHX on May 26, 2020. I just looked on Hawaiian Airlines website, and now it shows no flights from PHX to HNL for the entire month of May. Previously it was showing flights from May 21st-31st, 2020. So, apparently our flight has been cancelled, but we have not received an email from Hawaiian Airlines regarding the flight cancellation. Others have stated Hawaiian Airlines sent an email with a cancellation option to get a full refund. I am already booked to go back to HNL in September, so I don’t want to reschedule this flight; I want to cancel it for a refund. There is no option in my online Hawaiian Airlines account to cancel for a refund. Any idea how long it took to get the flight cancellation email from Hawaiian Air? Ideally, I don’t want to have to call and sit on hold.

    Mahalo and stay positive!
    Brian

    1. Hi Brian.

Thank you. From the reading of comments, it appears that the online change form did lead others to a refund option. If that isn’t the case you can either contact them or use the DOT complaint form.

      Aloha

      1. Aloha!
Quick update. I called Hawaiian Air and was on hold for only a few minutes. They agreed to a refund for my cancelled flight without any hassle today. However, they stated it could take 3-4 weeks to actually get the amount credited back to my card. Hopefully this means it will be getting easier for everyone else to get refunds too.

        Mahalo,
        Brian

    2. Aloha! After your 4/5/20 update got online chat going with HA and she said our 5/26/20 to Kauai is still good even though not letting any new bookings for that. Find that hard to believe but I still have some time before absolute decision making on our end for travel insurance for our property, etc. Still playing the wait and see game, although tempted to call credit card company and let them deal with it if I get impatient. Mahalo!

      1. Hi Susan.

You aren’t the only one reporting a similar situation across multiple airlines. And yes you have DOT and credit card options should they be necessary.

        Aloha.

        1. I am flying to OGG from Las Vegas June 1- then onto HNL June 7. Then back to Vegas on June 14. I booked this in Feb 2020. I have not received an email from HA, but when I try to book this same flight I am being given a message stating that HA is not flying these routes. Can I assume they have then canceled into June? But they haven’t informed me yet? Or are they just trying to stop people from booking, just in case they end up having to cancel? I can get a refund for all of my travel, except the Airbnb so far, so I have been waiting until mid May to cancel. Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you.

          1. Hi Jennifer.

What we know of is ony through the end of May. Have not heard anything about June, although we wouldn’t be surprised to see it cancel. We hope to know more soon.

            Aloha.

  6. Hello fellow travelers.

I contacted the bank whose credit card I used to book my flight to Maui and they are going after the airlines on my behalf.
My flight was one that was cancelled, was a non-refundable flight and was scheduled for May 5.
The bank was very willing to pursue the refund on my behalf and I only had to be on hold for 30 minutes before getting assistance.

    Good luck,
    Barbara

  7. I received an email from HA earlier today notifying me my flight (HA89) on 4/12 was cancelled. In the email it stated if I wanted a refund to submit a request (a link was provided to the request form). I filled out the form but when I tried to submit the form I got a message telling me I was forbidden from sending the form. I will try again later but I suspect they are doing this on purpose. Any Insights?

  8. Do you have an idea on when Hawaiian Airlines notifies each ticketed passenger of their flight cancellations? In a previous article it was stated that if THEY cancel your flight you will he rebooked on another date with no fees or fare increase. Since our fare was very attractive (the only reason we chose to visit again so soon) we are now finding fares more than double what we paid.
Where did your published info come from? Will we be able to fly for the same fare we purchased?

    1. Aloha! My kids are devastated that we will not be headed to Hawaii this Easter for our annual spring break vacation. You seem to have the inside scoop so I am hoping you can put my mother in-law’s worry to rest. We are currently scheduled to leave April 5th on flight 69 out of Long Beach (LBG) to Honolulu (HNL) and return on flight 70 from HNL back to LBG.

Any idea if this is officially cancelled? Any idea when HA plans to make that call so we can get refunded through Capitol One Travel or our trip insurance?

      Your help is greatly appreciated!!!

      Mahalo!!!

      Evelyn K.

        1. Unfortunately, Hawaiian is still not offering a refund option, nor sending out individual emails related to specific flight/reservation cancellations. My outbound flight for April 30th (obviously canceled) no longer shows on my itinerary, yet no correspondence received from HA, and no refund received.

PS- Thanks for keeping us all updated and sending some Aloha along the way!

          1. Hi Brian.

We’re very sorry to hear that you haven’t heard from them and that a refund is not being offered. We have posted the US DOT regulations multiple times, so if need be you can use DOT’s consumer complaint form.

            Aloha.

          2. Would you believe that just a few hours after I posted, I received an email from Hawaiian stating the following:

            Aloha,

We are writing to inform you that there has been a flight cancellation to one or more flights on your reservation XXXXXX

Hawaii Governor Ige recently announced a 14-day quar antine requirement for all arrivals to the state effective Thursday, March 26. Information on the new quar antine rules are available here.

Because of these restrictions, Hawaiian Airlines will be operating an extremely limited schedule until these restrictions are lifted. We apologize for the disruption to your travel plans and appreciate your understanding.

            Please review your options below.

            Rebook your flights:
We are currently experiencing unprecedented high call volumes. Please call our Reservations team at 1-800-367-5320 only if the flight you would like to rebook is in the next 72 hours.
The unused value of the ticket may be applied toward the purchase of a new ticket for a period of up to one year from the original ticket purchase date.
In order to have your change fee and fare difference waived, you must rebook by December 31, 2020 and travel must begin on or before December 31, 2020.
There is no limit to the number of times you may change your flight before the ticket expires. The ticket will expire one year from the original purchase date.
Cancel your ticket for a refund:
Request a refund using our Make a Request Form.
From the Topic dropdown menu, select “Refund” and from the Subtopic dropdown menu, select “Other.”
You will receive a confirmation email once the refund has been processed.
For further information regarding recent travel advisories and travel waivers, please visit HawaiianAirlines.com.
            ____________________________________________________

SO…Who knows how long it will take to process, but at least they are working on it. Should give a little hope to others in my situation.

            Mahalo,
            Brian

  9. Here’s an interesting update. I called Hawaiian today to cancel my flight from Los Angeles to Kona on May 19. Lo and behold, the Virus page NO LONGER references the May 20 period. They’ve removed that reference entirely and wouldn’t offer me a refund, just the travel voucher with a 12/31 expiration date.

  10. I have flights scheduled for May10-16. I sent an email through their website, I did not choose the “COVID-19” reason. I then briefly stated flights cancelled not my decision, requesting full refund as per US DOT regulations, then attached the document to the email. Just sent it, we will see how it goes.
