  1. How do you track if people contract Covid while on vacation and return home with Covid? You say that Covid comes from the community here and that Hawaiian’s after returning from the mainland are spreading it here. How is the reverse not true? Is contract tracing happening once visitors return to the mainland and they found out they have symptoms of Covid after being home 3-5 days.

    1. If you test positive for covid while vacationing in Hawaii you will not tell anyone unless you are gravely ill. What they should be tracking is how many people left early. No one in their right mind who tests positive will admit it as it will cost them 1000s of dollars as they get locked in quarantine for two weeks at $500 a night and can only eat room service. Not to mention car rental for two weeks that you can’t use along with parking and resort fees. You are looking at 15k.

  2. Thank you for the article. I believe it would be best to require vaccination and a negative test in order to come to Hawaii. We’re on Maui now, vaccinated and boosted, already changed our behaviors in the past few days so we don’t go out much. We’d hate to see the health care system overrun. Stay safe and healthy.

    Happy Holdays.

  3. My wife and I are planning on going to Kauai for 5 weeks starting around the middle of January. Unless Governor Ige does something rash, like shut the state down, we do not plan on cancelling our reservations.

  4. There have been no deaths from Omicron! The death in Texas according to the Harris Co HD was most likely due to another cause, he just happened to test + for omicron. The coronavirus is the cause of about 20% of colds. There are more than 30 kinds, but only 3 or 4 affect people. In other words, if we wait until there is no Covid, that will never happen! The mental health damage is worse than Omicron. It’s time to live and enjoy life again instead of isolating ourselves so we can be “safe”.

  6. I have a trip planned in February with my daughter for her birthday. As of now, we are not canceling anything & moving forward. Hoping things do not shut down, not only for travelers, but also for Hawaii’s economy.
    Praying things get better worldwide!

  7. Im scheduled to go to Maui Mid January, right at the time they expect COVID Omicron variant to be at its worst. While I came in 2021 2x and felt safe, this time there is too much we don’t know and I don’t feel comfortable traveling or being away from home if I were to get sick. Concerned Marriott will screw me over like they did in 2020 with my Vacation Club in Kauai, despite no visitors allowed in Kauai.

  8. The anxiety comes from leaders and media. We should be thankful that this new variant omicron is less dangerous with mild symptoms like the regular flu. The focus should be therapeutics to help with the symptoms. Restrictions do nothing to stop the variants. We need to protect the vulnerable and protect ourselves. The heavy restrictions are causing the increased anxiety. Planning on February 2022 we be there. Living life.

    1. Amen Doly. Your clear concise words are very welcome. Fearful people want me to join them. Stay unafraid. I’m living the dream during my years as a 70 yr old with years of wisdom. Something our leaders don’t pocess.

  9. “possible subsequent hospitalization surge”

Maybe wait until there is, in fact, a “hospitalization surge”. According to HI-EMA COVID dashboard, As of December 22, Hawaii had a total of 56 people hospitalized with COVID statewide, of which 11 are in ICU beds. They had nearly 500/100 back in late August, and travel did not shut down. The future lies ahead, but so far, Omnicom is a much less virulent virus than Delta.
