  1. We had reservations for Maui arriving on Sept. 24th, for 2 weeks. We have cancelled the trip, don’t want to get there and be told we need to leave or have everything closed down. Also, The Mayor spoke and doesn’t want tourist to visit currently.

  2. We unfortunately canceled our trip for September I didn’t want to but my husband was concerned hes in law enforcement and covid is running rampant its our 30th anniversary

  3. Please know that we are scheduled to arrive on 10/22 for one week each on Maui and Kauai. Too uncertain with continuously changing guidelines to know if we are canceling or traveling.

  4. I plan to travel and take the necessary precautions. Do the pre testing and stay away from large gatherings! I am originally from Oahu and need to visit family while I am able to do so!

  5. After spending the night at the ballpark down here in Florida it became clear…

Hawaii and it’s ” leaders” are acting like a scared bunch of kids. Enjoy your next few years scared, masked up, mandated and restricted.

    1. Yeah, because Florida is the poster child for how to NOT manage a global pandemic…great comparison. Enjoy your Governor and the wonderful job he’s doing…thanks

      1. Thanks… I and the other 23 million folks are enjoying it. Those that are worried can and do stay home or follow whatever personal safety precautions they deem necessary. Easy and low stress.

        How is Hawaii doing BTW?

  6. Still plan on traveling to Hawaii not vaccinated. Not scheduled and not worried about the fear of the boogie man. Thank you , I pray they do not lock it down

    1. Can someone please tell me… How is Mishka getting into Hawaii unvaxxed??? Don’t you have to be in order to get in now?

  7. Aloha, I’m just curious, but what difference does it really make if you’re had the shot or not? Even if you’ve received it, you can still get Covid and you can still spread the sickness to someone else… sometimes easier because you won’t realize you’re sick. My daughter and son-in-law are in Hawaii now. My mom and step dad are Resting Forever in Paradise at The Valley of the Temples.
    Mahalo 🙂

    1. The difference is as you say, with the shot you may not even know you have COVID, while without it even younger people are now dying. Getting the shot keeps the number of hospital admissions at a manageable level, where as currently it’s heading towards unmanageable. Sad when the situation has a scientific proven solution.

      1. Young people are dying? Where are you getting your info from? Per the CDC’s own website, the likelihood of surviving Covid for people under 60 with no pre-exisiting comorbidities is 99.7%. Is this worth being part of a gene therapy experiment?
( this type of technology has Never been used in people). Time will tell. As for me, I prefer to continue to assume the role of placebo in this world-wide experiment.

  8. Hi! Thank you for the articles you post! We have our 25th anniversary planned in Kauai mid Oct, and we are still planning on coming, unless the state shuts down, as others have said. I have never been to Hawaii and this is my dream vacation, so really hoping we can keep our plans. We are both vaccinated and always respect social distancing and mask mandates. We do have a few outdoor activities planned so hoping those will still be available as well.

  9. Remember, 13 brave American GI’s died today, plus dozens of innocent Afghan civilians. If you can’t get to Hawaii this year, it will still be there in 2022. I won’t go into detail, but as a Vietnam vet, I’ve seen the aftermath of these types of attacks. People are literally blown to bits. Please keep a perspective on not getting to Hawai in 2021. Keep your loved ones close.

    1. Thank you for this comment. People seem to have totally lost perspective. It’s a vacation. Anyone who says they are ‘losing money’ knew when they booked that they were doing so during a worldwide pandemic. (Unless, of course, you booked pre-March 2020.)

  10. My wife and I are planning on coming to the big Island in late September. Unless something else changes , we will not chnage our plans. Honestly, the only people to blame for all of this are incompetent Hawaiian Govt Officials and people who simply will not get vaccinated, for whatever reason escapes me.

    1. Mark calls the Hawaiian government incompetent while its the residents refusing to get vaccinated. So what are you saying here Mark? You are for mandatory vaccinations for all hawaiian citizens?

  11. Until Hawaii, and all of the states, get proactively serious, we’re just going to chase our tails. Economics, politics, and stupidity will continue to plague any efforts to fight this out of control virus. Unless we bite the bullet seriously like New Zealand, whom conformed to a proactive and controversial strategy immediately, we’re just kidding ourselves. What’s really hypocritical are the radio and television broadcasters. One minute they’re telling us how bad the news is on the virus surge. Then during commercial break, they’re advertising Vacations Hawaii, encouraging us to go to Las Vegas to have fun, with no regards to the inevitable dangers of doing such. Again, take a serious look at New Zealand. I made these same comments over a year ago. Unfortunately, I’ll probably be writing these same suggestions down a year from now.

    1. the news doesnt drive advertising. If the news were promoting the vacations that would be one thing but they arent. Thats private corporate business driving those commercials.

  12. I feel being in HI is about as safe as being at home. The tricky part is the plane rides – but I think being vaccinated plus a good mask (kn-95) mitigates a lot of the risk.

I think we’re all going to be dealing with COVID for the foreseeable future so we just have to learn to minimize the risks.

I never stopped wearing masks indoors after being vaccinated, if I go out to eat – it’s outdoor dining or takeout. I think too many people rushed to get back to ‘normal’ and it backfired. There’s no such thing as normal anymore.

P.S. I don’t plan to cancel my HI vacation because between testing and being mindful/careful I don’t see what undue risk or burden my visit would bring.

  13. We’ve had a trip planned to Maui for Sept 7-16 since last April. My husband and I are both fully vaccinated but have rescheduled our trip for March 2022. Luckily we had travelers’ insurance and were able to change our plans. I totally understand those who feel they can’t cancel and will travel respectfully.

    Thank you for the update

  14. I wish Hawaii would determine a no visitor policy. We plan to come September 25th. We can’t get our money back from Air BNB without official restrictions.

    1. I’m going first week of October and nothing is gonna stop it. Unless they lock it down. Just go ! Plenty of space and no crowds to be away from the dreaded boogie man

  15. We are headed to Maui Oct 1. We are lovers of the island and the culture and will be taking all precautions to make sure we keep ourselves safe, as well as all residents.

  16. I also have a trip planned for October and will be going unless they absolutely say we can’t come. The 4 in my group of age to be vaccinated are, and the one that’s not will be tested as requested. We can’t wait!

  17. I just had my booster and I’m coming for a month. Had my flu shot too. Not living in the government uncertainty and fear….

    1. Anyone have recent experience with Uber or Lyft on Kauai?
Cars are sold out everywhere for December, and at the moment, I have flights and lodging for my family – six of us in all – to go for Christmas. One of the condos is my own vacation rental property. All of us are vaccinated.
Looks like we’ll be walking everywhere!
      Laurie

  18. We have a trip planned in October and still plan on going! We rescheduled from last year, which I wanted to be there on my 65th birthday. Im not cancelling again unless I am told that we absolutely have to!! It will be me, my husband, and my sister. We have no children traveling with us and we have all been vaccinated!

    1. Will be there in September unless I have a positive test. Was supposed to go in January but test came back positive despite having no symptoms whatsoever.

  19. Contemplate postponing again for the third time. But with both of us vaccinated, we need to move forward, so we are still going to travel to Hawaii next week.

  20. Aloha, I have purchased tickets on AlaskaAir for end of Oct to mid Dec for Kona 2021. I have a small condo and a vehicle. Depending if Hawaii Island shuts down again I will cancel.
I arrived in Kona 2weeks before the outbreak in Mar 2020. I was careful, followed the protocol and had a wonderful 3 months there.

  21. We have our trip to Kauai booked for the second week in November. I guess luck was on our side because we tried to get it booked in September or October and not everything we wanted was available so we waited until it was. It just so happened that it is also our anniversary week. I’m watching the daily posts and keeping my fingers crossed that we are able to go. It’s not just COVID I have to worry about…..my husband has Congestive Heart Failure and this is most likely the last trip we’ll be able to take. We’ve wanted to go for awhile but had to ride out this pandemic. We got the go ahead from his cardiologist and he said to go sooner than later. So this new variant can really hurt us is it lingers too long. Then there is the possibility that my husbands health will keep us from going. We truly plan on just getting some R&R at the resort by enjoying the outdoor pools and outdoor restaurants. I think we will be safe just sticking to ourselves, avoiding crowds and being outdoors the majority of the time!

  22. After cancelling 2 times prior, I would be very inclined to continue with our plans for a week in Kona, a week in Maui, the 1st of Nov. But I am only 1 of 4, and believe the others may not be as
comfortable. We are vaccinated and when we have been to Hawaii previously, we rarely ate out, meals were prepared in condo or quick things on the go. Usually the 4 of us just stay together in our little group. But if there is concern, I guess we will be trying again another time. This truly is bad for everyone. We, who love Hawaii, keep you in our thoughts. With regret….

  23. Time to question vaccination breakthrough cases more serious. I’m hearing more and more everyday that the Delta variant is infecting more vaccinated people than unvaccinated.

  24. We leave Monday for Kauai. Fully vaccinated. We have not seen our daughter who lives on Kauai in 2 years due to Covid. So we will continue with our plans. We have private housing, no car rental, no resort. Just family time and sitting on the beaches. We think this is reasonable although we know that some may disagree. Your helpful posts have been invaluable especially this year. Many thanks!

  25. we cancelled 2 planned kauai trips in 2020 and were so looking forward to going in dec. this yr. sadly, i have an autoimmune disease and my rheumatologist says i need to postpone the trip yet again. we’re double vaccinated but the doctor says it’s still too risky to travel. how i miss kauai. hopefully next yr. love your blog!

  26. We had planned to go to Kauai using timeshare points that we either have to use or lose. Now the Delta surge and Governor’s speech have thrown us into indecision. Of course we are fully vaccinated, believe in masking and have filled out all the forms, etc. We have owned at this resort for over 20 years and feel safe going there. It is on a less popular beach and has a lovely pool and garden. If we decide to go, we will support the local economy by buying take-out to eat in our condo, but won’t be going to any local markets, boat trips, or any place where there might be tons of people. I know it will be a different vacation than usual because we love to frequent the farmers markets and eat in local places. We have 4 days to make up our mind and are watching carefully to see what developes. Still up in the air….

  27. I really appreciate your updates. We are planning to respectfully travel next week. Too late for refunds. We will wear masks. We will keep our distance and we will mostly be in our condo or on the beach.
    Mahalo

  28. We have a trip scheduled on October 9th to the Big Island we are praying things get a little better and look forward to having a good time.

  29. Covid testing???

Aloha, my wife & I have booked a 15 day visit to Kauai/Oahu [for the 3rd time],we have done the pdf for safe travel profile with our CDC cards. Kinda confused, will we still have to do covid test 72 hours departure??? Mahalo we love your web site.

    1. Hi Darryl.

Thanks. No at this time you just need to follow the Safe Travels protocol of vaccination, followed by the health questionnaire within 24 hours of travel. Don’t forget to get the compliance wristbands from the airline before boarding for Hawaii.

      Aloha.

  30. I’m fully vaccinated and attending a wedding next month; all is paid for. I won’t get a refund if I cancel due to Covid fears. I’m traveling to Hawaii without any fears.

  31. Thanks, BOH Guys, for your posts. We are not cancelling our trip to Kaua’i scheduled for 9/9-9/20. We have restricted options for the condo which must be used by end of 2021. We are vaccinated, will test before flying out regardless of whether a mandate is in place, will be respectful, patient, and masked. We have a few restaurant reservations in place and will eat and tip well to help the local economy. Other than that, it’s just relaxing by the pool with our beautiful water view and preparing meals in our own kitchen. We’ve decided this is not a vacation to hike, travel around the island or gather in groups and that can all wait for another trip. Aloha and mahalo!

  32. We’re scheduled to be in Oahu from September 18th through September 24th and have no plans of canceling. We canceled 3 times last year and unless there’s a complete shutdown we’re coming. We have a timeshare with a full kitchen so we don’t have to eat out. As long as I can lay on the beach without a mask and my husband can go golfing, that’s all the Hawaii experience we need.

  33. Accommodation has to be prepaid. If the preflight Covid test shows that I unknowingly have Covid, then I lose all the money I paid for accommodation. So, I am not visiting until I can buy trip interruption insurance.p

  34. Been in Princeville Kauai timeshare the past two weeks & the Island is busy. Traffic to Hanalei is crazy & backing up into Princeville. We have been eating in our unit way more than normal & trying to steer clear of crowds. Been going to beaches near Kilauea to avoid Hanalei. We went once on A Sunday & there were 30 to 40 in line for shave ice. Too crazy for us. We are vaccinated but still very concerned. Going back to LA tomorrow and not looking forward to Airports. Thanks for all your information. Aloha. Andy

    1. Hi Andy.

Thanks for letting us know about your time on Kauai. We’ve been going across to Hanalei regularly on Sundays, and there has been no more than a 5-minute delay on each side. During the week is a different story.

      Aloha.

  35. We have a planned trip for mid October, as of now we are still planning on going. We would only change our plans if there’s an illness in the family or Hawaii once again completely shuts down. Hoping neither of those scenarios happen. The state is dependent on tourism and travel so I’m hoping they remain open. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

  36. Aloha,
Thank you for all your great updates on travel to Hawaii! I look forward to all of your updates, keep them coming!! I will be traveling in November with my N95 mask and I also did get the “JAB”. Spent a lot of money on my condo during the travel ban on Kaua’i and am looking forward to getting my unit in even better shape while on island! Kept my contractor busy… While on island, I will shop at Big Save and support other local businesses but will do my best to stay away from big groups. We have our homeowner’s meeting at that time and social distancing will be the norm. Hopefully more of my Kaua’i friends will get vaccinated and we can get a better handle on this virus! Mahalo!

      1. Aloha BOH pals. Once again, mahalo for the daily info. Everyday there is something crazy going on in the world. I know everyone would like to think Hawaii would be like ” getting away from it all.” Not any time soon, I fear. Am going to Kauai in October. Going to wait until next month and see how things progress. Keeping a positive attitude that things will get under control soon. Being here in California with all these fires
has me missing the daily rain over in Kilauea sitting on the lanai with my ohana drinking a cold beer!! So for now I am still planning on coming over. Have a great weekend ☺️
