  1. I hope he fails. It deplorable how he uses his wealth to intimidate people. Rich people have no regard for the common man and use their wealth to fo whatever they like. He doesn’t care about yhe locals or the environment.

  2. I am surprised that Hawaii would go along with a large beef operation on Kawaii. As I understand it agriculture is one of the worst sources of pollution on the earth. Also meat is one of the chief causes of cancer and heart disease, the two top causes of death in the world. The China Study, a classic book reporting the largest nutrition study ever conducted in a collaboration between China and Cornell University conclusively shows this to be the case.

Also I understand that Melaleuca is primarily marketing health products. This seems very strange that they would be promoting something so very unhealthy.

I also am very familiar with Kawaii since I spent several months there as a missionary for my Church. Hawaii deserves better.

  3. Why is the State continuing to allow outdiders with money to come and but sections of the islsnds?
It’s ongoing snd Hawaii is no longer the Hawaii we know

  4. It’s sad when people come buy up land and actually as sad when they talk about ‘Affordable Housing for 500 in Lihue’.

If he cares so much about the island and people, give each person or family 1/4-1/2 an acres of the 2000 *additional* acres he purchased – not build crappy ‘Affordable Apartments’ like some pretend white knight – so people are stuck in a box, with no room to play outside, no growing food, no ownership.

Anyone who made their money on an MLM scheme (and I tried his products once, they were all a joke, labeled ‘natural’ but with a ton of low grade unnatural ingredients in their shakes and vitamins, blech) is not to be trusted.
    Sorry.

  5. Puleeze another entitled man buys up Hawaii. Now as before all of the haouli’s will suffer the verbal abuse and car theft personal property thefts etc. from those that should have much more access to their own home lands. The lid should long ago been screwed in place on these deals. But wait .. it’s all about the money, the rank encrusted plantation style politics. Good old capitalism. Land and Power in Hawaii by G. Daws (book).. still there to be read! Thanks, Mahalo’s.

  6. Let the rich spend their money. Yes. Maybe keep control but don’t stop them from investing their money. The government can’t invest in the local economy like they can. Anyway they can take editorial heat. I’m sure. We need jobs and affordable housing. Kauai island should be diversified with its economy. Open the door for economic development. Maybe the educated youth won’t leave then.

  7. When I was 10 my family had a cow pasture next to Valley House, it’s sad that it’s getting runned over by millionaires .we as local people can’t teach or kids to pig hunt and fish for bass. I put the bass in the pond my family had. Now it’s locked up and gone. Locals that live here dream of what it used to be. Not cool

  8. So if one of our local reporters or editors who have a “questionable” past, better be careful of what they report concerning Vanderloot and his peojects.just saying and mahalo for your reporting on this.

  9. Aloha Rob n Jeff. Gosh, isn’t he happy enough with all the land he has on the mainland. Is that the Pi’laa parcel? Why doesn’t he just focus on updating his meat processing plants over there. Or build more affordable housing in addition to the Lihue project. Greed is taking over this island by outsiders. It’s sickening and not good. Why is everyone selling out to them? Money is bringing this island down instead of up for the residents. Aloha

    1. So they can control the surroundings in their world. I hope they invest in local projects honoring hard critical thinking, than putting $$$ behind smart working residents. Team Sustainability at every turn

  10. I think Hawaii definitely needs to be way more Food independent and Food Secure- that most things have to cross an Ocean does not fare well if supply chains/disruptions of multiple kinds occur. Hawaii needs to go back to its roots and plant, grow and prosper on the islands…it would decrease the costs of Food I would imagine as well. Buy local and Support Local Farmers is Essential always for your own health as well as the Community’s health!

  11. Idaho native and unfortunately someone who has had to deal with the subject of this article.
    Read this part again:
Salon.com columnist Glenn Greenwald also wrote that VanderSloot had threatened to bring “patently frivolous lawsuits against his political critics” and threatened “expensive defamation actions” against sources (that included Forbes, Mother Jones, and Salon) who had published critical views of his public statements regarding both Melaleuca’s business practices and gay rights.

    1. You know, you shouldn’t knock something until you try it. When you go to the grocery store, do you purchase all of your items from the same manufacturer? Probably not, because not all of their products appeal to you. Online shopping is the same. That’s what Melaleuca is, online shopping. I buy what I like, what works for me, and that’s what matters.

  12. What a shame. Folks clamoring for an alternative to tourism. But, the all-knowing state govt wants to severely restrict this cattle farmer.

    It’s depressing!
