It’s really baffling why Southwest stopped their direct Phoenix to Kauai flights. Being the fifth largest U.S. city and a major hub for both American and Southwest, you would think Phoenix would be a no brainer. It is for American and since that’s the only airline doing it, it’s the reason I fly American. I’m very surprised other airlines haven’t taken up the charge and giving American a run for their money on that route. So far, American enjoys that market without any competition and therefore they get to charge a premium for it. You would think Southwest would do it then run that plane inter-island for a couple of days as they currently do with their Honolulu flight. Way too much competition in the L.A. to Honolulu market.
While I understand being loyal with one airline, I would never fly north from that far south an airport just to fly back down and around to my final destination. Airlines are modifying their schedules too much which is an unfortunate outcome thanks to the pandemic and economy.
Oh yes, that Alaska flight change thing I surly recognize. You better like coming out of Seattle when using Alaska. On the other hand, if you’re coming out of Seattle on Southwest, you end up coming out of Oakland or LAX. Alaska does a nice job with the Northwest.
Aloha
There’s another nasty thing that Alaska does. They can have two flights a day coming from Seattle to Kauai and two flights back to Seattle. If they don’t sell enough seats on the flights, they will cancel the earlier flight and put everyone on the later flight. That flight cancellation can happen two days before the actual flight. That works if you’re returning to Seattle but, if you had a connecting flight you will miss that flight and get to spend the night in the Seattle airport.
