  1. My family will be traveling from the California Bay Area (SFO/OAK/SJC airports) at the end of June for a wedding. Nonstop flights are currently right around $600 rt. Is it advisable to book now? Or will airfare prices drop? Thanks for the advice!

  2. Me and my fiancée are traveling from Florida to Lihue March 27-April 3. Prices are ~1400 round trip is that a good deal. Thank you. I look forward to visiting Hawaii!!

  3. Columbus/Cincinnati Ohio area. Would like to take family to Hawaii in November of 2016 to celebrate their grandmothers birthday. What is the best time and airline to fly from ? We tentatively would like about 10 members to travel to Honolulu if affordable.

    thanks!
    Mi’Che

    1. Hi Mi’Che,

November is ideal – just not near Thanksgiving. With 10 people, we suggest calling the group sales desks of several airlines to see what they can do for you.

      Aloha.

    1. Hi Jason,

If you can go a couple of days earlier or later, then just under $800 RT. Might or might not improve. Spring break.

      Aloha

  4. I am planning a trip in Jan coming from NYC. When do you think is the best time to buy plane tickets and book a hotel?

  5. My husband and I planning to fly from Florida (preferably Orlando) to Oahu in June. We are willing to break up our trip and book as two separate flights, if necessary. Can you recommend a route for us that would be the most economical?

    1. Hi Susan,

Multiple bookings unless you are planning a true layover are complicated and typically best avoided. San Diego or San Jose might work best however if you decide to go that route.

      Aloha.

  6. We are planning a trip to Waikiki June 12-19 (2016) out of San Diego. Tickets are going for 684 a person. It will be a family of four traveling on Hawaiian Air. Do you recommend we book now? Also do you have experience flying Hawaiian Air and if so would you recommend upgrading to larger seats (70 extra)?.

I have been monitoring prices for about two months and it seems like prices are staying between 640-800 plus.

    Thanks a lot!

    1. Hi Derek,

Prices aren’t likely to go down for those dates. They could go up, but that isn’t entirely likely either. There are fares on other dates at the end of June for about $100 less.

      Aloha.

  7. We are planning on a trip to Kauai from April 24-May 1. The prices out of Oakland right now are 524-600ish round trip. Is this a good price?

  8. Looking to purchase flights (multi city: San Diego to HNL to OGG to SAN) for April 16-23rd-27th. Is it best to purchase now or wait a bit?

  9. Thank you for the great tips. We are flying from Phoenix to Kona From April 7 to 22, 2016. Right now there is a direct flight for $554. How do you feel about sticking it out, or buying now?

    1. Hi Toby.

Very few good deals from Phoenix – so might not improve if you wait. Also that departure is in spring break.

      Aloha.

  10. We are going on a Hawaiian cruise at the end of March. We need to fly from PHL or JFK on Wed. March 30. Will rtn APril 9. Suggestions as to when we should book our flight? Do you think the prices will go down if we wait a few weeks?

  11. Hello,

Planning a family trip to Maui from Oakland either April or October next year. Which time would be the best for weather, air fares and hotel rates?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Diana,

It is going to be about the same either way (assuming 2nd half of April vs. October).

      Aloha.

  12. I am planning a trip to Kauai over President’s Day week 2016 and saw tickets are around $850. Should I wait or purchase now?

    Thanks

    1. Hi Dzuy.

Since you didn’t say where from, we’ll comment generally. That is relatively high season – not as high as Christmas or spring break however. It might be worth waiting as there “might” be some softness in demand that could yield lower prices. There’s no guarantee of that.

      Aloha.

      1. Sorry that I forgot to include that. I am planning on flying from San Diego to Kauai around February 13, 2016. I am seeing a nonstop fare of $854 on Alaska/Delta. Do you think it might get better?

        1. Hi Dzuy,

It might get better. On the other hand, there is very limited availability for the non-stop so for cheaper fares consider AA via LAX.

          Aloha.

  13. I am planning a family trip form the week of March 20, 2016. Right now flights from San Diego are $644. Is this a good price or should I give it more time for prices to come down?

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Sarah

    1. Hi Sarah,

What we know including high season dates at Spring Break are already in the post. That is probably fair.

      Aloha.

  14. I am planning a trip for spring break 2017 March 25- April 2. I realize it is far out but when should I be able to price flights? Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

    1. Hi Aaron.

Should be the same situation as indicated for 2016. Buy far in advance for prime weeks or take a chance and wait until towards the last minute.

      Aloha.

  15. We are planning a family vacation for sometime next year to visit close friends of ours who are stationed with the Army in HI. Maybe Aug/Sep timeframe. I was looking at flights on expedia and they are around $800 per person. Should we stick it out and wait until spring/early summer for deals or book now? Thanks!

    1. Hi Angel,

All that we know is in the post – which is that it is far too early to buy airfare.

      Aloha.

  16. I am looking to go to Oahu at the end of July 2016. My friends and I are coming from the nyc area and were thinking to stop over in Los Angeles or San Diego for a few days to break up the flight. Would it be that much more expensive to break up the flights? Or would it be best to get a direct flight? Thanks.

    1. Hi Fabbio,

Direct is starting at about $775 and it is significantly higher with a stopover. That’s on American via LAX and it’s a good price by the way. It’s probably best to buy as soon as possible.

      Aloha.

  17. I would like to travel in March 2016 to celebrate my mom’s birthday 97th on the 7th of March. I have checked Hawaiian Airlines $498. Rt non stop from SFO to Honolulu. I have checked different dates & the fare goes higher. They offer a fare of $444 but it ends on March 3,2016. Shall I just keep checking, or the fares will not get any lower. Thankyou!

  18. We are planning on a family vacation in late June / Early July 2016. We will be flying from Chicago area to HNL. Should we book now when the flights are in the high $900-low $1000 range or wait?

  19. I live in Louisville KY and I want to take my mother who is 80 years old to Hawaii the latter part of February or April 2016, which is the best city to travel out of for the best deal

What would you pay for a ticket during that time and when should I make arrangements and with who??

    1. Hi Cynthia,

$700’s in February, but more in April. If you’re comfortable book with airlines and hotels directly. If not, perhaps a travel agent.

      Aloha.

  20. Are there any airline discounts/deals for groups?

What about inter island flights…are there any deals or tips?
    Thank you!

    1. Hi Amy,

For 10 or more people, there are group desks at each of the airlines. There aren’t any great deals on inter-island as there is no competition.

      Aloha

  21. Hi,
My fiancee and I are planning our honeymoon in Maui. April 2nd thru the 9th 2016. Flying from Atlanta. We’re looking to package the flight and hotel together. When is the best time to purchase and what is a good price?

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Matt,

That is the peak of spring break so be prepared for some sticker shock. We don’t get involved in hotel or package pricing so can’t comment on appropriate pricing.

      Aloha.

  22. Our family is thinking of going at the end of February-1st week of March. Will the weather be nice at that time?

    1. Hi Kichi,

The weather is generally wonderful here year round. There are storms of course and just like on the mainland, you can’t predict those. You can expect 80 degree days and high 60’s to low 70’s at night depending on where you are going.

      Aloha.

  23. I am looking at packages at the Hawaiian airlines website and they seem so low compared to what I am pricing just for flights. February 2016 trip from Seattle to MAui or Hawaii is running $650-$750 pp. When I add hotel and car, it is coming out at $1500 pp for a whole week trip. Is this possible? I have always been leary of booking packages and have preferred to book directly with airlines, hotels, car rentals. I think this is crazy if these deals are true. What am i missing?

  24. Hi. My wife and I will be moving to Hawaii next year but we would like to visit before the end of 2015. We live in Houston, Texas, is there a better hub to fly than Houston to get a better deal?
    Thank you for any help!

    1. Hi AJ,

Houston is as good or better than surrounding departure points. Just avoid Thanksgiving and Christmas.

      Aloha.

  25. I looking to island hop in May 2016. I’ll be flying in from San Diego. Which is the cheapest island to fly into? Does it vary from where you are flying from?

    1. Hi Liz,

Cheapest is to fly into one island and out of another. On the main islands from San Diego it should be fairly comparable pricing. Inter-island will be a separate and somewhat expensive ticket best bought far in advance.

      Aloha.

  26. My fiance and I booked a trip to the Big Island March 9th-16th. We are flying from Florida, when would be the best time for us to book our flights?

    1. Hi Scott,

We’ve already seen good pricing from some cities for winter travel, and more could come out at any time. Florida almost never sees a true Hawaii airfare sale however.

      Aloha.

  27. Looking to fly my mom to honolulu for her bday which is Nov 26th to see my sister, my sister said its best to stay for at least 7-10 days since we are 6 hours behind. We live in HH so our closest airports are HH, SAV or Charleston. Wondering if I should look to piece the flights together, like get her to a major city and then find a flight from that stop to HNL or just deal with what I find with my searches. Thanks!

    1. Hi Elizabeth,

It is safest to fly straight through. Otherwise you’ll be dealing with stop overs, hoping connections work, multiple bag fees and perhaps multiple security check-ins.

      Aloha.

  28. Great website! Thanks…looking to fly from the east coast to Hawaii February 13-20, 2016. American has a fare of $1300+- Should we wait or take this? Thanks. Mike

  29. I found a Hawaii package deal for hotel + flights + car rental for about $800 a person for travel mid January. Would you consider this a good deal or would you suggest taking a gamble and waiting for prices to drop? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

    1. Hi Kaylee,

We don’t get involved with package pricing, so it is hard to comment. We can say that January is high season.

      Aloha.

  30. We are 2 people Flying from New Orleans to Honolulu Jan 15-23, 2016, roundtrip tickets right now range from $2,130.00-$2,350.00. Are fares of this amount normal in High/Snow Bird Season?

I could book airfare through Norweign Cruise Line which would cost $1,200.00 RT for 2 people however this is a Mystery Airfare, you do not know what airline, how may layovers, if its a red -eye, what time or seats until 30 days before travel and at that point it is non-refundable. Any thoughts on Cruise Line Hawaii Air Packages?

Trying to figure out if I should take Cruise Airfare (have till Oct 17th to decide) or book my own airfare and possibly wait to see if fares go down? We are locked into that date due to work schedules. Thanks.

    1. Hi Stacey,

Based on the difference you mentioned, the mystery fare sounds pretty good, especially for January travel.

      Aloha.

  31. How much should I plan to pay for a ticket to Kauai from the Midwest for Thanksgiving week 2016 buying in June 2016?

    1. Hi Helen,

That is too general a question. From Chicago, perhaps $1,200 per person or so would be good.

      Aloha.

  32. My family of 4 (2 adults, 1 child, 1 infant) is looking to fly to Honolulu from Oakland somewhere in between the dates of April 20-30, 2016. When would be the best time to book with Hawaiian Airlines, and what would be considered a good price for a round-trip flight?

From what I’ve seen right now, it’s about $450 for one roundtrip ticket, so I wasn’t sure if we should book it now or wait for a better deal. Thanks.

    Thank you!!

  33. We’re planning to visit San Diego from HNL over Spring Break 2016. In your experience, what is a decent airfare during this time? Do airlines tend to raise the prices over these school breaks because more families are travelling? Thank you!

    1. Hi Nadia,

From $500 to $600 RT depending on your specific dates. Yes airlines always raise airfares for most in demand dates.

      Aloha.

  34. What is the cheapest time to fly to Hawaii in 2016? My friends husband passed away this year and he made her promise to go to Hawaii with me since he had always promised to take her but never made it. We have a place to stay in Oahu and we have a lot of things that we want to do but are going to be on a limited budget. Any suggestions for a discount layden vacation would be greatly appreciated. No accounting for spelling!!! Thank you for your help. Renee

    1. Hello I am planning to go to Hawaii Aug 3 – 7 2016. When is the best time to book a flight for a good deal. Also does the choice of the city I fly to matter ?? ( P.S coming from Houston area)

      1. Hi Crissy,

Best suggestions for when to buy are already in the post. You can’t expect deals for your dates. Not sure what choices you would have if flying from Houston. Certainly west coast would be cheaper but that gets complicated.

        Aloha.

  35. Going to Maui (using HA miles) in mid-Jan 2016 – when is best time to book? Are there better deals without using miles?

    1. Hi Lee,

January tends to be high season, due to Snow Bird season. There may or may not be deals, either using cash or miles. If you’re determined to come, better to book soon. Or you can chance it and see if deals arise.

      Aloha.

  36. Hello:
We’re traveling from Los Angeles or San Diego middle of May, to Oahu. Flights are about $600 now. Should we wait longer? When is the best time to buy?
    Thank you 🙂
