  1. Hello, I have been looking for deals for our honeymoon end of April 2017. I been looking and everything I see is a few places around $300 to well a lot. I want to find a good deal but stay at a nice resort. Unfortunetly it looks like there are no all inclusive. Any suggestions? Any good time to look, specific islands to look at.
    Thanks!

    1. Hi Jennifer,

Travel accommodations are expensive whether in Hawaii, New York, San Francisco, etc. Nice resorts and cheap prices don’t go together. Having said that, end of April will be low season, so it would be best to wait until better prices come out perhaps 60-90 days before hand. You might want to hold a reservation in the interim as well.

      Aloha.

  2. Hi im getting married in Honolulu 9/6….i have booked our resort 9/4 through 9/10… we plan on leaving out of orlando fl. What rates should i hold out for?

  3. Good Morning!

PHL to HNL Sept. 3rd to Sept. 17th 2016. Last time I conversed with you, you mentioned any price range in the 800’s with short layover would be good. Well I am currently looking at $879 with 8 hour layover at 1 stop. Do you think I could get that price or lower without the 8 hour layover? Also do you think the Airlines will have specials for tickets purchased on Memorial Day?

    Thanks,

    1. Hi Regina,

Obviously still early for fall travel purchases. Plenty of time and no harm in waiting. Airlines reduce fares when supply and demand indicate, but it is unrelated to purchasing on specific days of the week or holidays.

      Aloha.

  4. Good Afternoon,
Maui is my favorite vacation destination. I have been a few times, but not in the past three years and I am ready to go back. I am looking at trying to take my husband on a trip to Maui summer of 2017. We live in the NW Arkansas area so my biggest obstacle is figuring out the best way to get the best price on airfare. Do you have any suggestion that you could share?? Also, possibly the best time to start looking for pricing deals for 2017 summer travel. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated!!
Thank you so much for your time.

    1. Hi Melissa,

If you’re traveling between mid June and mid August fares don’t typically decline once posted 330 in advance of travel dates. For that reason we usually suggest buying as soon as possible.

During summer you’re looking at $1,100+ with a reasonable connection time.

      Aloha.

  5. Our family of 6, 5 adults and one senior, is planning to visit Maui and Honolulu from Los Angeles around the thanksgiving week. Our schedules are different, some Lea inn Saturday (11/19) and some leaving Wednesday. (11/23). Which airline will be the cheapest for this see schedules?

    1. Hi Chie Pap.

Hawaiian, Delta and United are running about $800 around Thanksgiving. That is high season and will likely not improve. Availability could also become an issue.

      Aloha.

  6. Does LIH every go on sale for under 450 from the West Coast? Trying to figure out what price to target for Kauai in Early September.

    1. Hi Sean,

Currently not under $450 on any of the nonstops and maybe $20 less with a very long connection. Not sure it will improve much this year.

      Aloha.

  7. Aloha! I’m looking for a flight for 5 leaving from Nashville, TN or Atlanta, GA on December 26th. Honolulu, Maui or Kauai – the least expensive of the three will be fine (and I realize that will likely be HNL, of course!). What is the best time to buy for this period? Many thanks!!!

    1. Hi Kim,

From Atlanta to Honolulu about $1150-$1350 (but varies considerably depending on your return date). Suggest buying soon for peak December travel as indicated in post. Price is largely determined by duration/stopovers. The worse the travel experience the cheaper the price. If you can leave on the 24th, prices with longer stopover start at about $850 (same routing).

      Aloha.

  8. Please offer suggestions on departure dates/good flight prices under the following scenario: My daughter and I will be flying from either Peoria, IL or St. Louis, MO to Maui for 7 days/6 nights. I would like to leave very late July (7/27/16-7/31/16) so our arrival/departure dates do have some flexibilty. Is there a best departure date for best fares? Do you have an idea of good round trip rates we should be looking for? Would prefer to fly out of Peoria – this would save probably $75 in airport parking plus a hotel night stay the night before the flight.

Also, do you know if there is a best day of the week to purchase airfare to Maui?

Any suggestions you have would be appreciated. Thank you so much for your input.

    1. Hi Diana,

$995 to $1075 depending on day of week and how many hours you want to spend getting here. Generally Thursdays are pricing a bit better on the cheapest fares. Keep in mind that range of duration with stops is from 11 to 20 hours! STL is running about $200 cheaper than PIA.

      Aloha.

  9. I’m planning a wedding in Maui, Hi in April of 2017. Do you have aby idea airflare for round trip from 4/12/2017 to 04/19/2017 would cost??

  10. Hi,
Thanks for all of your helpful information. I am looking to purchase tickets from Oakland, CA to Lihue, Kauai from Aug. 3, 2016-Aug. 11, 2016 with no flexibility with dates. Hawaiian Airlines has $618/ticket direct right now which seems good. Just wondering whether I should expect anything better to come along? Thanks for any advice!

    Sam

  11. Hi,
I’m looking to come home to Maui for a week in either october or november. Any time. For at least a week, or 10 days. The airport I’d be flying out of would be Seattle or Portland. Any help would be appreciated.

    Makena

    1. Hi Makena,

Seattle will be cheaper than Portland. Just stay away from Thanksgiving and you’ll be fine. Watch with us for target price of $400 or less per timing details in post.

      Aloha.

  12. Aloha! I am traveling from Los Angeles to Oahu on 9/18-9/25,and the dates are pretty solid. Fare was $458 when I first took a look out of curiosity a few weeks ago, and over the last 2 weeks have been climbing (even up $85 since yesterday)and I am regretting not buying that low fare, now that travel plans have been solidified. Do you think this price will come down at all again? Mahalo.

    1. Hi Ami,

Yes will likely come down. No rush to buy for those dates and in that competitive market.

      Aloha.

  13. Planning 6 days, 5 nights in Kauai in late September. Coming from Kansas City. What airlines do you suggest for the smoothest transitions?

    1. Hi Jennyjo.

Airlines are a matter of personal preference to a large degree. United has a very good connection through San Francisco. Currently priced at $800 which isn’t bad if you want to buy now. Okay to wait and see what happens too for those date.

      Aloha.

  14. Hi Beatofhawaii! New to the site as my family is planning our first Hawaiian vacation! Thanks for all the great tips! We’re traveling a few days before Christmas and and leaving a couple days after. Philadelphia(Maybe NY/NJ) to Honolulu. When is the best time to book flights for that time of year? We were unsure of our travel plans a couple of months ago when flights were cheaper. Is there a “sweet spot” for Holiday travel prices? Thanks!

    1. Hi Jeff,

Not really any sweet spot for holidays. Return visitors often book as soon as flights are released (330 days ahead). Prices are currently quite moderate for that time of year. For example JFK 12/21 to 12/29 is $906 on the Hawaiian nonstop and 12/20 to 12/27 is $865 on United nonstop. Wouldn’t hesitate to buy immediately.

      Aloha.

  15. Hello! My husband and I are flying from PDX to OGG 8/11/16-8/17/16 (dates are NOT flexible). Flights continue to stay around $750 for a direct flight. Should I hold out to see if it goes down or will it just continue to increase? Sharing a condo and rental car w/ another couple so were hoping to get the same flight vs. multiple layovers and arriving/departing at different times. Thanks so much for your expertise! 🙂

    1. Hi Tiffany,

About $647 round trip nonstop on Alaska at this moment. Not sure this will come down. Perhaps best to buy now.

      Aloha.

  16. Hello,

I would appreciate any advice you can give me. Flying from Portland, OR to Maui on Tues 11/1/16 and returning on Tues 11/8/16. When is the best time to purchase tickets?

    Thanks so much!

    1. Hi Robin.

Running $500. Suggest waiting per post timing details – it might come down some (say $50). Not a very competitive market however.

      Aloha.

  17. Hello! We are planning a family vacation from 7/30/16-8/9/16 from the Bay Area to Kauai. Currently, airline ticket prices are $700 RT from Oakland. Should I buy now or will prices drop if I wait a bit longer?

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Alison,

Prices for summer in that market start at about $600 (or less with a stop) but are very much date and day of week dependent. If you have no flexibility then it might or might not improve. Guessing availability will stay okay if you choose to wait. If you left on Thursday instead of Saturday that saves about $130.

      Aloha.

  18. Hello,
I am looking to fly to Kauai (LIH) from either Dallas (DFW) or Kansas City (MCI) on Saturday, December 3 and returning Saturday December 10. Which is the better airport to fly out of and when is the best time to purchase the tickets?

    Thank you,
    Alejo

    1. Hi Alejo,

Dallas will be your best bet but you should wait per details already in post. Problem will remain that you are flying on Fridays and those are definitely going to be more expensive. Currently priced from mid-$800’s, but “might” come down by $50-$100. Other days of the week are already just under $700.

      Aloha.

  19. Hello!

leaving Saturday PHL 9/3/2016 to HNL, Return Saturday HNL 9/17/2016. Alaska Airline has round-trip ticket $800. Please let me know if you think the price will go down, if so what do you think the latest time I should purchase my ticket.

    Thanks,
    Regina

    1. Hi Regina,

That is definitely worth waiting on. Saturday departure and return won’t help situation however. And the Alaska flights have a very long layover resulting in 30 hours of transit.

      Aloha.

      1. Hello!

What price should I hold out for (Round trip from PHL (Sat.9/3/16) to HNL (Sat. 9/17/16).

        Thanks,
        Regina

        1. Hi Regina,

Something that has a good connection and starts with an $8 would be good. Right now there are fares of just over $800 but they have very long connection times. Definitely wait.

          Aloha.

  20. Hello. Looking for airfare from Des Moines to Honolulu Aug 13 – Aug 25. Seeing AA, United and Delta with costs in the 900’s. Would you recommend one airline over another? Is now a good time to book or will further ‘deals’ come up?
    Any recommendations are appreciated…Thanks! Linda

    1. Hi Linda,

You’re leaving on a Saturday and that is a problem price-wise. The following week (mid-week only) could see reductions to about $800 or slightly below. Otherwise $900 for a good connection might be as good as it gets. You can wait as availability won’t be an issue. We have no recommendation on airlines, but a quick connection sure makes it less painful.

      Aloha.

  21. Hi, I am looking for flights to Maui OGG on week of Aug 7 to 13. The air fare is more than $1050 each for family of four. The vacation package (with hotel) is coming out $5500+.
Do you see chances of getting better deal if I wait or this is new normal?

  22. I’m flying from Atlanta to Kona on 10/11/16 and returning on 10/18/16. When should I buy my ticket and what airline? Thanks.

    1. Hi Irene,

Currently $736-$790 on American which is a good price. That is within target range so you can buy now or wait since availability won’t be an issue. Which airline is a matter of personal preference. “When” information is already in post.

      Aloha.

  23. Hello Beat of Hawaii,
We are looking to fly direct from Seattle to Lihue from September 5-15. Currently flights are $591. Do you think we should pick these up or wait a bit longer?
    Thank you!!!

      1. Hello. Our family (2 adults, 4 kids) will be traveling from Detroit (DTW) to Maui (OGG) next April 1 – 8, 2017. We tend to fly Delta. Currently, Delta is charging $1,522. Since it is a Spring Break week, can I assume that this it what it is going to cost or will prices come down and if so when? Thank you so much for your time.

        1. Hi Peg,

Spring break while expensive, isn’t as predictable as say summer and Christmas. Having said that, it isn’t even possible to book your dates quite yet. Availability is only for travel in next 330 days (currently through 4/6). Expected price is about $1,200 with a good connection. Your dates look to be just outside the predicted highest point of spring break. Look for a target price of $1,100-1,200 to buy. This could also become less expensive as it gets much nearer (winter) if you want to wait and see. No guarantees of that happening however.

          Aloha.

  24. I just bought 2 RT tickets to Maui from Chicago for $909.00 each. Do you think that is a good deal, or did I just get ripped off. Love your website! Wish I had seen it before I booked.

    1. Hi Brenda,

Thank you. You didn’t mention your dates so it is hard to say. For the best Chicago to Maui deals, there are $600 airfares starting in August on Virgin America with a good 1-stop connection.

  25. Hi! We’re taking a big family trip (six adults, two children) from Chicago (ORD) to Lihue (LIH), departing on Oct. 14 and returning on Oct. 22. Right now the best fare we’re seeing is on American at $931/person RT — and it works out pretty well as the connections (either through LAX or PHX) have reasonably short layovers, so the children can stretch a little bit, but not get too bored sitting. The other issue we have to contend with is one adult is disabled and is usually more comfortable in one of the premium coach seats with a little more leg room. Should we jump on the $931, or are we going to see some price drops in the future (United isn’t too far behind on the fares right now, about $100/person)? Thanks for all your help!

    1. Hi Jeff,

There are better prices in that market but not on your exact dates. Alaska has a good connection 1-stop at about $75 less for Tuesday’s through Thursdays. On your desired Friday and Saturday travel dates it may not improve There is no harm in waiting though as there is little demand that time of year.

      Aloha.

  26. I WANNA SPEND MY WIFE’S 50TH BIRTHDAY IN HONOLULU HAWAII HER BIRTHDAY IS ON AUGUST 6TH MY SCHEDULE IS FLEXIBLE FOR THE 1ST THREE WEEKS OF AUGUST WHEN WOULD BE THE CHEAPEST TIME TO FLR FROM ORLANDO FLORIDA TO HONOLULU.

It’s on August 6, my dates are flexible as long as we are their on the 6th an I’m wondering if they still have the weekly fireworks show.I’M LOOKING FOR GOOD RATES ON A NICE HOTEL PLAN TO STAY FOR A WEEK THANKS FOR YOUR TIME

    1. Hi Willie,

Price is currently about $900. Might come by by up to $150 if you wait. Best prices will be per post – mid August on. And yes Honolulu still has weekly fireworks.

      Aloha.

  27. Hello,

My son is getting married in Honolulu on January 7, 2017. We are trying to find the best fares from Sacramento to Honolulu and currently the lowest fares round trip are around $430 (without tax & fees). Should we purchase at this fare or wait to see if fares come down? Thank you for the advice.

    Nanette

    1. Hi Nanette,

For 1/7 departure, fares start in high $500’s. Should improve by perhaps $100 if you wait. Best prices will never be for Saturday travel however.

      Aloha.

  28. Aloha:)
I have been waiting for a sale from either LAX or San Diego direct to Lihue. Hopper keeps indicating the price will go down for travel 7/6/16 to 7/15/2015. I haven’t seen such high airfare during summer in years. Any idea if I should buy or wait?

    1. Hi Molly,

No reason to expect fares to go down by much if at all in that market this year. If they do it would be closer to travel dates.

Next year might be quite different but that’s another story.

In a nutshell high demand, limited inventory. Prices aren’t very much higher than normal – they have been in the $700’s for that time for the past twenty years or more. So inflation adjusted they aren’t that bad.

      Aloha.

  29. My husband and I are flying to OGG in October from Wichita KS. We never get deals from Wichita but can you tell me when is the best time to book our flights? All the info I get online is just overwhelming!

Thank you and love your site! Very informative!

    1. Hi Pat,

Timing is per post – so this summer. Pricing looks to about $700 with bad (18 hr) connection, $800 with okay (14 hr) connection and $900 with good (11hr) connection. Can’t get much worse. Yikes.

      Aloha.

  30. Hi there!
You have some great tips here and I would love your opinion on my decisions! Fiance and I are planning our honeymoon to Oahu (HNL) for Oct. 19-Oct. 26 . We are starting out from Las Vegas (LAS). Currently ideal flights are around $660RT. However I have found that flying out of San Fransisco has been popping up significantly less, lowest $398 RT. A flight from LAS to SFO has been bottoming at $44 one way. That would put at $485 RT if I went LAS to SFO to HNL, which is significant savings to me vs going to LAS to HNL.
I recently moved from Virginia, so I am not familiar with airfare here on the West coast. To me this seems like a great deal, but am I jumping the gun? Do you think fares will drop much lower for either cities?

    1. Hi Grace,

Las Vegas does not see many good deals to Hawaii unless you fly Allegiant, which we can’t recommend. Certainly SF bay area have been and will be cheaper. From there in the fall you can expect to pay under $400.

There are issues to be considered with a change like checked bags, possibility of missed flight connection and perhaps need to go through security again as well.

      Aloha.

  31. Aloha!

Wonderful site, thank you for the tips! We’ll be flying to Hawaii for the first time on our honeymoon – 1/23/17 – 2/6/17. Flights are currently $800 from EWR to HNL. Whenever I talk to someone in the area who has been, they’re amazed to hear anything under $1,000. I know we’re a whiles away, but do you think it’s worth buying or waiting?

    Thanks!
    Lindsay

    1. Hi Lindsay,

Current price on UAL nonstop for your dates is $796. Really excellent price. It might get a little lower if you wait, but not appreciably. Suggest buying now so you can take that off your list of things to worry about.

      Aloha.

  32. We’re leaving from Richmond, VA to OGG to KOA then back to RIC in early October – fares are running about 1100 now (back in March it was about 950) – when is the best time to buy and what pricing should we hope for? Thanks!

    1. Hi KF.

Nothing more to add than is already in post regarding timing. Probably high $800’s with good connections. Those fares already exist. Example on Delta on 10/11-10/20 $893. Many other dates.

      Aloha.

  33. We are wanting to fly Nov 28th to Dec. 8th from BLI to OGG.
I know Alaska Airlines have direct flights now, but is there a good time to watch for flight sales?

    Eileen

    1. Hi Eileen,

IF you leave either 27th or 29th and return on 8th, then $408. Not sure if it will get cheaper. If it does, then per timing already suggested in post.

      Aloha.

  34. I am taking my family to Kauai, Hawaii November 17th through the 26th. We could come back a day early if you think it would be cheaper. Last year we got our tickets to Oahu in June. Should I wait to be looking for tickets.
I have had no luck with calling the group line. I can never get anyone to answer. Last year they booked 5 and 5.
    Thanks
    Linda

    1. Hi Linda.

You didn’t say where you are traveling from. Oklahoma City perhaps? Here are some choices with your 11/17 departure. Return on 25th: $974 Dallas or $1,176 OKC. Return on 26th: $1,394 Dallas or $1,451 OKC.

      Aloha.

  35. Hello,

I’m planning a 5 nights trip to Maui this fall. I saw posts of deals from SFO to OGG for $265+ last night.. I guess they’re gone now, but I’m seeing flights from SJC/OAK/SFO to OGG around $368+ for September which seems fair. Do you suggest I wait it out for another deal or buy the flights at this price? I was looking to go mid June but it’s all $500+ so September is fine!

    1. Hi Dang,

We concur that $368 is a fabulous price, albeit not $265. Suggest buying now.

      Aloha.

  36. We are planning to visit Hawaii in October 2016, traveling from the New York area to Maui. When is the best time to book our flights? Any suggestion on airlines?

    1. Hi Jim.

For Maui you’ll be changing planes, so the airline will be mostly about personal preference. Price will be high $700’s to low $800’s. There’s a good connection on Delta for just over $800 if you want to buy now. Not sure it will be going down if you wait. On the other hand if you want to wait and watch it might improve a bit – like on Virgin America via LA.

  37. Hi Beat of Hawaii,

I’ve found her your website interesting and incredibly helpful! Thank you for all of your hard work! I have a couple of questions. First, our family including myself, husband, 11, 5, 4, 2 and 1 year old are considering a trip to Hawaii the week before Thanksgiving. The 17th-22nd out of portland. Are those good and inexpensive dates to fly? Second, what is the best island to fly to? If you would please help me out with these questions, I’d really appreciate it!

    Thanks,
    Rhapsody

  38. We are looking to travel from Phoenix to Kauai in late August for 2 weeks, the fares have gone up in the last few weeks. Do you anticipate a drop in fare or just book now? Thank you!

    1. Hi Maureen,

Mid-$500’s, which is about what you can expect. No indication it will go down if you wait, but no harm in trying either.

      Aloha.

  39. Hello beatofhawaii! We are planning our first trip to Maui Sept. 8 – 15, 2016 leaving out of State College PA. I’ve been watching airfare for several weeks and am finding airfare for about $2016 per person on Delta. Can I can reasonably expect fares to lower this summer?

    1. Hi Bill,

From SCE best price (with reasonable connection of 14 hours) is $951 on the three main carriers. For a better price of $773 fly from IAD. Not sure you’ll see much improvement in those prices.

      Aloha.

        1. Hi Bill,

Then about $2,000+ per person is to be expected. Those prices fluctuate very little.

          Aloha.

  40. My son lives in Hawaii and we are planning our first trip to the Island Dec. 2017. We are traveling from Ohio and can not leave until 12/21. We also will need to be back home around Jan.2 . Could you please share any advise as to what days are the best to travel ? How early would you advise to purchase the best ticket prices?
Thank you for this website and all of the helpful advise.

    1. Hi Kathie,

As indicated, that would best be purchased now and is running about $1,400 with the fastest connection on American. Otherwise if you return on the third, $1,182 with an additional three hours of connection. Both on American. To get anything much cheaper you’d need to leave earlier or stay a week later.

      Aloha.
