  1. Great site!!!

I’d like to take my wife to Hawaii for the first time. I have been a couple times but it’s been 15 years (Maui and Kauai).

If I want to schedule a trip in the next 6-8 months (now through April 2017) when would be the best time to go (taking into consideration weather and flight tickets)? Some people are recommending after Thanksgiving/beginning of December. Thoughts?

What airline would you recommend and what price should I be looking for?

FYI – I will be traveling from SLC, Utah.

We are active and like hiking, etc. Which islands are lush, and have really fun/beautiful hiking trails to lakes, rivers or pools, etc. Which have the best beaches?

    Any info would help!

Thanks again for the wonderful content and website.

    Jason

    1. Hi Jason.

Thank you! On airfares, we see lots of availability this fall at about $450 across multiple carriers. Doesn’t matter which you fly, so long as you avoid long layovers. And just stay away from holidays. Early December isn’t as cheap as September through November right now, but it could come down later. As for personal opinion, we’d suggest September through early November. More reliable weather than December and warmer evenings. Perfect time to visit. Not sure which island you’re thinking of but suggest you head to the Hawaii Revealed guidebooks for guidance. You can easily find what you’re looking for on the Big Island, Maui and Kauai. If you want to really go off-grid, beautiful and remote Molokai also comes to mind.

      Aloha.

  2. Hello, we are planning a trip for 2 from Seattle to Maui October 19th through 26th. R/T Flights right now is $998. Is that a fair deal or should we wait to puchase a little later in August or September? Thank you. 😀

    1. Hi Joan,

Seems like it will come down somewhat to lower in $400’s per person if you wait. That’s what we’d suggest.

      Aloha.

  3. my husband and I are seriously planning a trip from Toronto to Hawaii in March. we are 6 people. 2 children 9 and 11 boys. one likes nature the other one sports. my son in law loves sailing. love to give him one opportunity to do that. I know that we cannot see everything but just get a wonderful holiday in Hawaii. aloha

    1. Hi Berta,

Lots of fares at about $500 RT early in March to Honolulu. Great price with quick connection.

      Aloha.

  4. Hello,

I will be traveling with my family (3 adults 3 kids) 6/11-6/22/17 to Lihue. When would be a good time to start booking, especially for airfare deals. Right now it looks to be about 900.00 a person roundtrip give or take. I have an option to fly out of San Diego or Los Angeles.

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Norma,

That is running between $750 and $800. Alaska nonstop from San Diego is cheapest and from LA on Hawaiian is the higher amount. Fair price for those dates and suggest buying now.

      Aloha.

  5. Hi, We are traveling to Maui 4/19/2017. When would be a good time to start shopping for airfare deals. There will be a group of (8). This timeframe is right after spring break, what prices should I expect to pay? Thank you.

    1. Hi Georgia.

About $450 to $475 is the target. We’ll post spring airfares as soon as they are available. Maybe this fall. Definitely no rush to book.

      Aloha.

  6. Hi There,

I would appreciate your feedback. Flights recently dropped to $818 round trip from DTW to Maui, short connection in Seattle, 2/25 – 3/2 2017. Is this a fair price or should I expect to pay less?

    Aloha!

    1. Hi Mac.

Yes that is a fair price given the 12 hour transit time. You can pay up to $200 less but the transit time will be about 30 hours.

      Aloha.

  7. Oahu, Hawaii dates June 8 to June 15, 2017. (Dates flexible) 2 persons. Ambassador Hotel or nearby preferred.
Air & Hotel or Air only. Depart from DFW or LAX.

  8. This site is such an amazing resource, thanks for all the tips I’ve already relied on! A couple of questions about my upcoming trip from October 9-19:

    1) is there much price fluctuation in the small flights between islands, eg. from HNL to LIH ($74), LIH to KOA ($110), or KOA back to HNL ($107)? Are there other ways to get around
    2) Can I expect much decrease in one-way flight from LAX to HNL on Sunday Oct 9, currently at $304?
    3) What about return from HNL to JFK on Wednesday October 19, currently at $390 through LAX or $474 nonstop (thinking might pay a bit more to avoid the stop…)

    Thanks in advance!!

    Brian

    1. Hi Brian.

First thank you! Here are answers to your questions: 1) Very little fluctuation. Also limited availability for best times and for seats, so suggest buying those ASAP. 2 & 3) Hawaiian Air nonstop is $678 routing LAX-HNL-JFK. Excellent price.

      Aloha.

  9. Aloha! Your site is wonderfully run and has been useful in our travels to the islands previously. This year we are taking the littles to Aulani, very excited! Our travel dates from LAX to HNL are Sunday November 13th to Saturday November 19th. What is the most I should expect to pay and the least? I’ve been looking everyday but don’t plan on jumping on anything unless it’s less than 520/person round trip earlier than end of August. Am I wrong to expect most of the deals to start then?

We are flexible if staying an extra night will save enough to cover a night at a hotel closer to Honolulu. Thank you for your time!

    1. Hi Avon.

Thanks for nice words. Competition on that route is okay but not great, even with entry of Virgin America. Also, 13th is fine (though Sundays don’t have best deals), but 20th could be quite problematic as that is a big Thanksgiving travel day. Currently $661 to $704 RT. Unfortunately not sure it will improve for your dates. Other dates in fall could see about $500.

      Aloha.

  10. HI! We are planning a trip to Hawaii in June of 2017. Booking dates have finally opened up online for the airlines. We are using sky miles, plus purchasing an extra ticket. Right now the prices seem quite high for what I thought was considered a low season for Hawaii. Should I wait longer to get my flights? Or do you think I will see any significant decreases in prices. Oh and we are flying Delta due to the sky miles. Thanks for ANY advice you can offer!! : )

    1. Hi Kelly,

You didn’t mention dates and in June – the first week or so that will be low season and the rest is high season. If any of your travels are 6/9 or after then might be best to buy now. Otherwise okay to hold off until early next year.

      Aloha.

  11. Hi There,

Great website and really appreciate the advices you’ve been able to give people.

I’m travelling to Hawaii from Australia in January after getting a great special for the return leg of the journey for free. As we have a 4 week holiday planned, we decided to fly to the mainland for a part of the trip, and then fly back to HNL to make our return flight.

I found flights with Allegiant from HNL-LAS for about $135 including bags each which I’ve booked.

We’re now looking for one way flights back from the mainland to HNL, or another Hawaiian airport in no later than 16 Feb 2017 (Our flight back to Australia leaves HNL 9am on the 17th). We’re currently looking at departing SFO or any airport in that general area and the best I can find is $219 (SJC or OAK-HNL)one way. Is this likely to drop or could I expect to find any specials pop up from time to time? or should I go ahead and book now? Is there a particular west coast or any other airport that often has the best deals that I should concentrate on?

    Thanks again for your assistance,
    Walter

    1. Hi Walter.

Cheapest return airports will be Oakland or San Jose. Prices could be less, but probably not by enough to be worth waiting and worrying about. There are $199 nonstop fares on the 14th of February and that’s within perhaps $20 of what is even remotely possible. Hope that helps.

      Have a good holiday!

      Aloha.

  12. Hi,

I am looking for vacation packages on Travelocity and expedia to stay in Maui from August 30 to Sept 7. We are flying from Columbus, OH. Right now the vacation package price per person to stay at the Sheraton is 1644 per person which includes flight, hotel, and car. Do you think that price will come down at all or is that about as low as it will get? We are about 6 weeks away now and I wasn’t sure if prices might drop or start to increase at the 4 week mark? Thank you for your help and have a nice day.

    Thank you,
    Ely

    1. Hi Ely,

We don’t get involved in vacation package pricing. What we can offer is that the airfare prices for fall are over $900 with reasonable connection times (about 12 hours). You’ll also find 24 hour connection times for about $150 less. These should come down somewhat if you wait and watch – maybe by $150 or so. That will impact the price of packages as well.

      Aloha.

  13. Hello,

I am planning to visit Honolulu flying from MCO or another Florida airport in late September. My dates are flexible. Right now flights have taken a dip from $850+ to $700s. Would you say that I should go ahead and purchase now, or wait until the end of July/early August for cheaper flights? And additional advice you can give would be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help!

    1. Hi Taylor,

The current prices of $721 are very good. While it could improve, there’s no reason to think it actually will. There are rarely any true sales from Florida, just seasonal fluctuations. At the same time, there should be no harm in waiting if you prefer.

      Aloha.

  14. Planning a trip to Oahu for one night then 4 nights on the Big Island End of October 1st week of November. Flying from Dallas current see the lowest flight is $680. do you think this price will drop or should I go ahead and book. I dont see any good deals on non stops however!

  15. I feel bad pestering you about this, so please only answer when you have a moment.

    Here are the flight details:
    1 adult & 1 child
    Utah to Honolulu
    Nov 3 – Nov 10 (flexible dates)
Delta nonstop round trip flight for two – Total $924
Would it be best to book now?

Side note: We are going to Honolulu for a dolphin experience and Luau. If we can still do both of these things on another island, please let me know. I want to avoid the crowd as much as possible and I know I can’t do that in Honolulu 🙁

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Jessica.

Price is quite good for SLC-HNL so no reason to wait.

We don’t know about those activities specifically and where to best find them. There are luau’s on every island and they are incredibly touristy. You might like it – it comes down to personal preference. There are also much more local luau type dinners typically called paina’s. You’ll need to do some research to find. There’s one at the Kauai Museum and there’s one on Molokai that’s fabulous.

      Aloha.

  16. Hi,

My fiance and I are getting married December 3, 2016 and we were considering Hawaii for a honeymoon spot. Can you please recommend places to visit, cheap flights and hotels? Also can you recommend the best time to book our flight and hotel reservation or any vacation package deals? One other thing when would be the best time to book our vacation where it won’t cost an arm and leg?

Thank you so very much for any information you can provide…

    1. Hi Tasha.

The post on which you’re commenting is definitive in terms of cheapest times to fly and buy. Early December is fine as long as you’re done with your vacation by mid-month when things move from low to high season for the holidays. For places to visit, hotels, things to do, we highly recommend the acclaimed online and print guidebook series, Hawaii Revealed. As for packages, not sure they will save you money, but it never hurts to try.

      Aloha.

  17. Hi! Our family of four is traveling from LAX to OGG on December 26, 2016 and returning January 2,2017. Naturally, we are looking for the cheapest air rate possible. Any advice on when is the best time window to purchase tickets? I’d like to be in the $800 range or lower, per ticket. Do you think this is realistic?

    Thanks so much!

    1. Hi Tracy.

Looks more like $1,000. Doubtful prices will improve. If they do it would be towards the very last minute, making planning all but impossible. If you were able to modify dates slightly, however, there’s a $641 RT nonstop on American from 12/18 through 1/4.

      Aloha.

  18. Hi,
I am flying from honolulu to LAX in end of august or beginning of september..when is the best time to buy the ticket?

  19. Flying to Honolulu from Newark, JFK or Philadelphia on Dec. 8-17. When will we see the lowest fares? Thank you.

    1. Hi Scott.

Everything we know about deal timing is already in this post. Looks like the $881 nonstop on Hawaiian price might not improve as you’re returning on the Saturday before the holidays.

      Aloha.

  20. Planning a trip in October mid-late month flying out of Omaha, Ne to Maui. 7-9 days, what would be the airline to use? any recomendations for staying on Maui?

  21. Hello!

My husband and I are planning a trip for mid-October with the family. We are flying out of Charlotte, NC. I have been checking flights periodically and seem to find that they are all ~$950-1000. Is there any chance these will come down between now and then, or should I jump sooner so as to avoid any increase?

    Thank you in advance!

    Regards,

    Kerri

    1. Hi Kerri.

Fares in that market seem unusually high right now. Suggest waiting as availability then will not be an issue. Target price of under $800 with a reasonable connection. As a note, there are currently fares of high $700’s to low $800’s in September and October. The problem with those is that they have a 20 hour transit time, rather than 11 or 12 hours.

      Aloha.

  22. We love Maui! We stayed at the Royal Laihaina in the cabins, which was awesome. Can you please advise when is the most economical time to enjoy this wonderful island?

    Thank you!

    Mahalo!

    Judy

    1. Hi Judy,

Cheapest time is what the post is all about. In a nutshell, dates as indicated in post for fall and spring.

      Aloha.

  23. Hi boh, my husband & I are planning a 2 island visit to islands of Hawaii & Kauai Oct 13-23. Want to make the most of our time, so I’m trying to book non- stop coming(Alaska) & 1 stop via HNL on way home and via Alaska or Hawaiian airlines. We wil book inter island flight separately as I haven’t noticed advantage to combining it. It looks like your site predicts price drop for late summer early fall in late July. Am I correct?

    1. Hi Val,

We can’t say when next sales for fall will be. They are intermittent and we’ve already had a number of them. As you know Kona and Kauai see the fewest deals, so you can expect to pay more (up to about $100 more) for each flight to or from those islands, when compared with Maui or Oahu. Correct that there’s no advantage of combining inter-island. But be sure to get that as soon as you book trans-Pacific as availability can be an issue.

      Aloha.

  24. Hello,

My name is Miyuki . I would like to know when the best time is to travel to Hawaii from LA? The Best Time and best Price that you can offer?
    Thank you

    Miyuki

    1. Hi Miyuka.

The post is all about the answers to your questions so not sure what more you would like to know. From LA look for deals in the $400’s for off season and subscribe to our updates as you’ll need to move quickly when those are available.

      Aloha.

  25. Hello, we are looking for flights from LAX to HNL week of Thanksgiving 2016 (Nov 21-28). When is the best time to buy tickets? I can see $691 right now. I heard tickets usually drop by end of August. Will prices still drop for that holiday week? Thank you so much for any advice you may have! Mahalo!

    1. Hi Ruth,

It might not improve by waiting for your dates around Thanksgiving. Do you have any flexibility? For example, if you can fly on 11/21-11/29, fares start at $560 on American.

      Aloha.

  26. Hi! My husband and I are planning to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary next spring in Honolulu. We are looking at March 29-April 5th. We live on the east coast (Virginia). We are thinking about flying out of New York or DC. Right now flights are about $800 out of NYC. Do you think that is a good price? Or should we hold out for a better price? Also, are there any other cities near the east coast that we should considering flying out of? We were leaning towards NYC because the flights seem a little cheaper out of there. Thank you for any help that you could provide.

    1. Hi Cynthia.

Your dates are after spring break, so it might be good to wait. From NYC or IAD perhaps have low $700’s in mind as a target price. Could happen this fall.

      Aloha

  27. Looking for deals from LAX to OGG. Last week of August, 2016.
How long can I wait to buy my airline tickets?

  28. Hi there, this website is very useful and I appreciate you being of such help!
I am planning on surprising my boyfriend with a trip to hawaii in September. From LAX to HNL. I’ve been waiting for the prices to drop below $550. Is that possibly happening or should I buy them asap?

    1. Hi Naomi.

Thank you. Yes that probably will happen, so suggest waiting with us. Weekends could be excluded from lower prices however, so keep that in mind.

      Aloha.

  29. Looking for a mid November vacation from Los Angeles ti big island! Wondering when the best time to book is?

  30. Hello!

My family will be traveling to Maui from either Oakland or Sacramento on 9/30, returning on 10/8. Any inclination on if prices will go down or if we should bite the bullet and buy now?

    Thank you!!

    1. Hi Lesly,

Could be intermittent sales from Oakland only if you prefer to wait, and $400 or less is ideal price for mid-week. You’re flying on Friday and Saturday and those will not have best prices/may not improve.

      Aloha.

  31. Looking at flying from Sacramento or the Bay Area to Kauai. We are thinking about going anywhere from February-May. When should we book? What’s a good airfare?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Karina,

After spring break would be a great time. April to May. Low $400’s.

      Aloha.

  32. I’m looking to do LAX -> HNL in mid-october. Round trip prices I’ve seen lately are all $550 – $600. Is that what I should expect to spend or do you expect rate drops? If you think the rates will go down, typically when would that occur?

    1. Hi Jason.

Currently low to mid-$500’s. Could drop to mid-$400’s, but probably not more than that. When – when the airlines feel a need to induce buying. No one knows. Stay tuned.

      Aloha.

  33. Hi, We will be traveling from Aug 4 – Aug 11 from LAX to Maui. We were quoted $622/person RT non stop from an agent and the dare expires at 9pm this evening, and I see the airfare edged up on Orbitz over the $648/person it was earlier, same flight.

My question is the following: Do airfares still drop on Tuesday afternoon or is that a thing of the past?

    Thanks so much!
    Bonnie

    1. Hi Bonnie.

Thing of the past. On the price, it is $626 on all airlines. Some potential for it to go lower for your dates since this is a newly competitive route. Starting on the 8th of August, it is already $80 less. Can’t suggest what you should do as it could break either way.

      Aloha.

      1. Thanks so much! Since we’re already locked into the timeshare for the week, I’ll probably buy today. Thanks so much. Aloha!

  34. ALOHA!

Our family of 5 would like to visit either OGG or HNL from 7/9-7/16/2016. Cheapest fare I can find departing from LAX is about $750 RT before taxes and fees. Do you think that’s good or do you think we can find lower if we wait for super last minute deals?

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Farah,

We just answered the same question you asked earlier:

“No prices won’t drop for peak summer dates. Availability is an issue so check accommodations and car rentals too. Allegiant – buyer beware. A simple Google search about Allegiant Air trouble should yield everything you need to know.

      Aloha.”

  35. Aloha! A family of 12-16 people are looking to go to Hawaii sometime between 12/28/16 through 01/08/17. We will be leaving out of OAK. Right now it looks cheaper to fly into OGG.

We might do some inter island flights to either LIH or HNL, but not sure if we will fly home from one of these islands or go back to OGG to get back to OAK.

I know that this is probably the high season to go to Hawaii, but do you think that the flights may drop in price if we looked again in September/October, or do you think we should just purchase tickets (maybe at least the first leg from OAK to OGG) now?

    Mahalo you for your help.

    1. Hi Peter,

Extremely unlikely for prices to go down. Availability is a bigger issue then price at the holidays, not only for airfare, but also accommodations, cars, etc. Jump on this now. Check with the group sales desk of each airline due to the number of people traveling together (10 or more are needed for this).

Inter-island if both expensive for best dates/times and very time consuming. You’ll lose 1/2 day plus of your vacation for every flight. Something to consider. Suggest picking one island and enjoying it fully.

      Aloha.

  36. Thanks for the information on this website! We are looking to go from LAX to Maui at the end of August and are hoping to find a good deal! Thanks again.

    1. Hi Preeti.

If you wait, fares could drop $50-$100 from current price in $500’s.

      Aloha.

  37. Hi Beat of Hawaii! We are planning travel for next Spring (family of 5). I think I’ve found the sweet spot as far as dates for RT SEA>OGG, 3/27/17 – 4/11/17. Dates around those dates are over $1000. I found $518 on Delta, with one stop in HNL on the way back and $585 RT on Hawaiian, nonstop. Am I jumping the gun? Do you feel fares will drop? We prefer Hawaiian, and we would like Extra Comfort if possible so maybe not good to wait too long? Please advise, and Mahalo for all your hard work!

    1. Hi again-

I should mention, I’m aware Extra Comfort/Comfort+ will add to the cost; just assuming those prices will go down if the coach fares go down. We found $728 RT for Extra Comfort w/Hawaiian, $600 RT Comfort+ with Delta. Actually Delta had $700 RT First Class, which seems like a great deal. I do have concerns that we won’t have quite the same great experience with Delta that we’ve always had with Hawaiian. I’d love to hear any thoughts or experiences with flying with Delta.

      Thank you again!

      1. Hi again Cortnee.

Hawaiian charges a fixed price ($75 on your route) for their extra comfort offering. Not sure about Delta’s pricing. As for Delta 757 first class vs. Hawaiian extra comfort, it is a matter of personal preference. Lots of information and trip reports/reviews can be found online by searching. Probably no bad choice between the two.

        Aloha.

    2. Hi Cortnee.

Thank you. Yes you are jumping the gun and yes they will probably be lower (possibly by up to $100). On the other hand, best Hawaiian Airlines extra comfort seats (row 11) could be unavailable later. And what is your time worth to keep monitoring this. Sometimes the best deal is the one you get today. Then if you do decide to book now, don’t look back, as you can’t get any credit should fares drop.

      Aloha.

      1. Thank you very much for your response. I think I’ll sit tight and monitor the prices. Row 11 IS the best – I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

By the way, I used autoslash.com for a car rental reservation in Maui and have a minivan reserved for 15 days for $401 – including taxes and fees. What a deal!

You guys are da best! I can’t believe it took me so long to discover this page, but so grateful that I finally did.

        1. Hi Courtnee.

          Mahalo nui loa!

Yes, that’s a great deal. We have used them successfully as well.

          Aloha.

  38. You have helped me many times in the past. I love reading your emails sent with great information. One quick question, are there certain days out the week that are cheapest to fly out of Denver and into Kona and back again?
Thanks once again for all your wonderful help.
    Sandy

    1. Hi Sandy.

Thank you. The only consistently bad day to travel is Saturdays. Sundays sometimes work and sometimes don’t. Other days are about the same. If you have specific dates or a season in mind, let us know.

      Aloha.

    2. What I am trying to do is get the house booked now for a two week period in May June time period for next year. We are paying for our children and grandchildren, 14 people. So we are trying to guess when will be the cheapest time to fly may, June and also day of the week to schedule the house. If you have any thoughts on this at all I am sure it will be better than my best guess.
Thanks again for all the information you are always giving.
      Sandy

      1. Hi again Sandy.

Tuesday through Thursday flights will be cheapest. All of May will be ideal time. June will be best priced only the first week and that might be added later. Hope that helps.

        Aloha.
