  1. I’m planning a trip for 2 to Oahu from May 12-25, 2018. Flying out of Philadelphia. Current flight prices are around $1,000 with one stop – round trip. Should I wait for lower rates? What is a good price?

  2. Looking to book a trip for my aprents for their birthdays ot Oohu. They would be flying out of Philadelphia, PA, when would be the best time for price wise? Thanks!

    1. Hi Jill.

Fall, Winter and Spring are the best times for cost and the best experience. As indicated in post. Budget about $800 RT with a fast connection, or in high $600’s with a very long duration (not recommended).

      Aloha.

  3. Hello!
We are planning a trip to Lihue, Kauai leaving on April 7, returning on the 14th. We are traveling from the midwest (Detroit, specifically, but would drive a reasonable distance to save $). Fares are really high right now compared to what they’ve been like the last few years.
I’m still fuzzy on the best time to book flights, and hope you might have some valuable words of wisdom for us. Thank you so much!
    Maureen

    1. Hi Maureen.

About $750 on United with long connection or $200 more to fly with up to 4 hrs less duration. Not sure it will improve but it is doubtful.

      Aloha.

  4. We are planning a 2 week trip Jan 2018. Multi-city to HNL then KOA with flexible dates from Charlotte. I Have been watching prices steadily climb. Did I miss the window or will they continue to fluctuate? Wondering if mulit-city is the best plan or just to fly to HNL and pay for the trip to KOA. Our longest portion of trip is KOA but it is cheaper to fly to HNL so we planned to do that on our first leg of the trip.
    Thanls

    1. Hi Sherri.

With a good connection starting about $920 RT to HNL, or $970 into HNL and out of KOA (that’s the way we’d recommend). Not sure it will improve in price however.

      Aloha.

  5. We’ll be flying to IAH/HNL July 7, 2018 and returning July 14. Right now (Oct 25) flights are > $1100/pp. Do you believe there will be price drops IAH/HNL in Apr-Jun, or should we look for tickets from SAN or SAC (or even LAX)?

  6. Hi! So that looks like good news about Seattle! We are looking to go to Maui July 12-20 then kona July 20-27. So I need a multi -city ticket. Well, four of them. I think I just missed out on a great price. 657 ( around there) round trip with only one semi long layover ( on the return trip home). Now they are m Ch higher. Did I snooze too long? Do you think they will drop back down and if so what price should I look for? If I find a good one way price should I buy them all separate and wait for all trips to be a good price? Forgot to tell you we would be departing from Seattle. Thanks!

      1. Thanks so much! I wish I would have bought that milticity one and not let it go! I forgot to mention that I prefer Hawaiim airlines if possible. I really don’t like flying United. The article said that there will be more completion with Delta and possibly Southwest. Wondering if I should wait it out and see if that drops Hawaiians prices? I know you don’t have a crystal ball and I can expect you to claim to know the future but if you have any thoughts on that I would appreciate it! Thanks!

        1. Hi Lisa.

Definitely agree on no crystal ball or knowing the future or what the airlines will or won’t do. Having said that, gut call is that you are in the right place at the right time for expected sales for summer 2018. Suggest waiting with a target round trip price of $500. Please let us know how it works out.

          Aloha.

  7. Hi! We will be traveling mid June and flying out of Houston to Kona. Right tickets are around $1000, any chance they’ll come down on price? There will six of us traveling.

  8. Hello there! Thanks for having this awesome site. I checked out your site couple years back for my first time to Hawaii and decided to come back for more info for my first vacation in 3 years! My family and I will be traveling to Maui and Honolulu right after the new year. Can you recommend a good time to buy flights? And how much will flights be around that time? Thank you in advance for your help!

    1. Hi Jackie.

Your IP address indicates you might be flying from San Diego, so we’ll go with that. Looks like about $440 RT on nonstop which isn’t bad. There’s nothing in sight that indicates it would go lower, so you might consider buying sooner than later.

      Aloha.

      1. Thank you for your response! I’ll actually be flying out of Los Angeles. I don’t know why my computer thinks I’m in San Diego! Haha. What sites were you looking at when you saw the $440 RT? Can you please share? Everywhere I’m looking at is so expensive. I’m looking to leave from LAX on January 1st to Maui and if the price is right, we’d like to go to Honolulu and fly back to LAX on January 8th. If flights are too expensive, we might just do one island. Thank you again for your help!!

        1. Hi Jackie.

That was on Alaska from San Diego to Maui. There are even cheaper fares on United, but they are San Diego to Maui via LAX. If you start at LA, then nonstop on Virgin America for $479. Competition is heating up so these could improve.

          Aloha.

  9. Hello!
I am planning a trip to Hawaii may of 2018 for my wife and I. Is it cheaper to fly week days and does price vary much depending on which island you choose?
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Tim.

Islands won’t matter much although Maui may have slight advantage there. Mid-week usually best but some sales include weekends.

      Aloha.

  10. Aloha,

I am a planner so I looking for advice on when I should be buying tickets for Thanksgiving 2018 (11/17/18-11/25/18) from Sacramento to Big Island, Hawaii. I know that Sept-Nov is usually the low season and typically buy tickets in that spring/summer. But since it’s Thanksgiving, do I plan like spring break and Christmas, and buy super early? Thank you for your time.

    1. Hi Allison.

Yes Thanksgiving is generally like any high season date, as is indicated in post. However next year has the potential for more deals than normal for reasons we’ve already stated. And that includes Sacramento.

So, if you’re a gambling person, you can try waiting it out until next year. Otherwise you can buy when available about the first of the year and plan to pay about $700.

      Aloha.

  11. Hi! We are planning a trip to Maui between April 6 – April 16, 2018 (flexible between these dates as of now) out of San Diego (preferably), but open to LAX if cost is more favorable. We have accommodation package already purchased. Do you recommend holding off on airfare at this time?

  12. Aloha,
Our extended family is planning a Maui vacation for June 23rd to July 1st, flying from the SF Bay area, or from Sacramento. With all the changes, could you please give some advice on buying plane tickets?
Thank you for all the information you send out!

  13. Aloha,

I’m looking to travel from SLC to Lihue in early February 2018. Will you please tell me if I should wait to book for the changes mentioned in this article on Hawaiian, Alaska, and/or Southwest?

If so, what would be a good time to check again?

    Mahalo Nui,
    Mike

  14. Hi there!
My husband, 15 year old, 11 year old and I have a VRBO booked for Maui May 26-June 4 2018. We will be flying out of Omaha. Right now airfare has been $876 for two stops and $950 for one stop. When do you recommend we book our flight by? Want to wait and see if airfare goes down or if southwest starts taking flights, but don’t want to wait too late since we’re a family of four flying. Thanks in advance for any help!

    Mahalo,
    Allison

    1. Hi Allison.

There is no book by date for your low season travel. Southwest won’t be a factor in your time frame. $700 with a good connection (under 11 hours) is your best target price. That might or might not work with your Saturday departure. Wait a bit, it will improve.

      Aloha.

  15. Hello Oloha;

We are thinking of traveling to Honolulu within the first 2 wks of Sept 2018 from Phoenix. When would be the best time to start checking airfares. The fares I am seeing now really vary in price, but still seem high.

    Lynn

  16. Hi! We are looking to travel from San Francisco to Oahu June 16, 2018. Prices are high 780 s. Should we wait or purchase now?
    thank for any help

  17. Hello,

We are planning to visit Maui from March 23-30, and will be flying from Oklahoma City. I have been checking flights here and there, but when would you suggest the best time to book is? I know that is a higher time to fly, but do you think they will lower at all?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

    1. Hi Chris.

That’s spring break, so expect to pay a little over $1,000 RT. Don’t expect that to improve unless you want a 30 hour duration or change dates.

      Aloha.

  18. Hi. We are planning a trip from Salt Lake to Kauai from March 31st to April 7th, 2018. With all the new routes/airlines that are going to be added, I’m wondering if you could please advise about when the best time to purchase is? I’m wondering if it will be best to wait until January? Thank you in advance!

    1. Hi Zachary.

We don’t expect to see new flights added on that route in your time frame. Also you’re traveling at peak of spring break, so best to buy sooner than later unless you’re flexible.

      Aloha.

      1. Thank you for your quick response. Airfare is about $1100 roundtrip/person, is this what we should expect to pay for this time of year?

        1. Hi Zachary.

Not sure how to answer. That’s what the airlines are asking for so we’d have to say yes. Unless you’re willing to change dates.

          Aloha.

  19. Hello!
I’m planning to fly to Honolulu, Hawaii from Los Angeles, California on Sept 16, 2018 and returning Sept 21, 2018. Are the plane tickets normally cheaper at that time of the year?

    1. Aloha!

We are planning a girls trip in early January 2018 to Kauai from Portland Oregon. We have been watching flights on United ranging from $477- $552 round trip flexing up and down every week. My intuition tells me prices may go down soon. I appreciate any input!

      “Mahalo for your kokua”

      Mo G

      1. Hi Mo.

It looks like prices will fluctuate in that range so buy on lower end. Doubtful anything significantly better will occur. On the other hand probably no rush if you wish to wait and watch.

        Aloha.

  20. I’m looking to book airline travel out of Oakland from March 24th-March 30th(spring Break). The tickets are $872. Should I wait or go forward and book. Thank you

    Aloha,

    Michelle

    1. Hi Michelle.

Hard to predict those high season dates. Might improve, but could also sell out.

      Aloha.

  21. Hi! We are looking to travel from Salt Lake City to Oahu during the first week of April, 2018. Prices are high $900’s. Should we wait or purchase now?

  22. Thinking of planning a trip to the big island the first week of January. Do you think that is a good time to go as far as pricing? Please advise. Thank you!

  23. Hello,
My family and I would like to book a trip to Maui through CostCo. We were planning on leaving on June 3rd-8th 2018. The package with flights is pretty high. Would you recommend booking the flights separately? We aren’t sure if we should book now or wait till April or May.

    Los Angeles to Maui

    Thank you so much!!

    Allison

    1. Hi Allison.

Don’t think Costco will save you any money but it may be more convenient for you than booking everything yourself. First week of June should have good pricing, so just keep watching with us.

      Aloha.

  24. Hi! Looking at booking flights to Oahu May 30 – June 4th out of Omaha…tickets are $927….should we wait or book now?

Thank you so much for all the valuable information.

    Aloha!

      1. Do you feel the same about mid-june flights (from the east coast)? They are currently over $1,000 for 1-stop.

        1. Hi Randall.

There could be some benefit from more west coast competition, but that isn’t for sure. That is the normal price for mid-June unfortunately. Try waiting if you’re adventuresome.

          Aloha.

  25. Hi
Good Afternoon. I am planning a trip to the Big Island around May 15-24. I plan on flying out of Sacramento, Oakland or San Francisco. I was wondering with all the changes that might happen if I should book now or wait til January or later of next year. There will be 6 of us going.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Than You 🙂

    1. Hi Cynthia.

For bay area late spring, we’d suggest waiting as it should only improve from here.

      Aloha.

  26. Hello,

My family is planning a trip to Oahu and possibly Maui or Kauai. We have a week booked in Oahu and are looking at adding 4 or 5 nights on another island. Departure date is June 17. We are flying from Denver and the prices are around $950 and up for RT to Oahu and about $1100 for a flight to Oahu, then to Maui and back. Do you think that Denver prices will improve going forward (should I wait)?

    John

    1. Hi John.

Denver is certainly a city we see as a new route possibility for Hawaiian. Should that arise in your time frame, it could favorably impact flights. If not, then you’re probably going to be staying at the prices you see now. Hard to suggest what to do, as you probably want to start planning and without air reservations that’s hard to do.

      Aloha.

  27. Planning a trip to the Big Island in May 2018. With changes coming should I wait to book early next year or book now.

  28. Hello,

Looking to book a trip to Honolulu in May 2018 from Chicago. Prices are in the mid $700-800s. Should I book now or wait a bit longer?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Emma.

Not sure it will improve. But we’d suggest waiting nonetheless for low season May travel. Look for it to come down by about $100 or so. Prices vary based on duration of flights.

      Aloha.

  29. Wondering if it is too early to book flights for July 1 – July 14 2018 to Honolulu. Dates are flexible and wondering if prices are going to come down. Any insight would be helpful.

  30. Hello,
My daughter (6YO) and I are hoping to fly from Sacramento to Maui in early August 2018, stay in Maui for a week, then from Maui to Big Island for a few days, then from Big Island to Kauai for 5 days, then from Kauai to Oahu until August 29, 2018.
Flights that I have found from Sacramento to Maui and from Honolulu back are about $690-$750.
Should I wait to book or is that probably as good as it will get? I am covering my interisland travel with airline points.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

    1. Hi Erica.

Suggest waiting for August travel. Things should improve somewhat to significantly.

      Aloha.

  31. Hoping to go to Maui with 3 adults, 2 teens mid June 2018 for 10 days. Airfare presently is 380 over and 340 back from Oakland to Maui Airport. Am thinking of watching the airlines every few days to see if prices drop, but how long would you suggest waiting. Thank you for your time.

    1. Hi Claire.

Suggest waiting until new flights are announced which should lead to improved pricing. Later this year to early next year.

      Aloha.

  32. NEED PRICES ON ACCOMODATION AND FLIGHTS FOR APRIL 27ISH FOR A WEEK. WANTING TO RENEW WEDDING VOWS (30 YEAR ANNIVERSARY) FOR 15 9 13 ADULTS 2 BABIES (A ONE YEAR OLD AND NEW BORN AT THAT TIME)

    1. Hi, We are planning a spring vacation to Hawaii. We will be flying from Boston to KOA or HNL, 2 people. We have 2 different dates we can travel, can you please tell me which dates would be the cheapest. 4/12/2018 to 5/8/2018 or 4/19/2018 to 5/15/2018. Thank you so much.

      1. Hi Nancy.

Either one should be fine in terms of lowest seasonal pricing. Target is mid $600’s (though not yet available).

        Aloha.

  33. Hello.

Thanks for the great website and info.

Would you say that travelling from Vancouver (YVR) to Honululu on March 31 – Apr 7 for $590 RT on direct flights is a good price that we should book now or wait to see if the price drops down?

  34. Hi! We will be traveling from Los Angeles to Maui March 31, returning April 7. (Dates not flexible) I’ve been watching prices and availability for a while now, and it looks like the prices up to a couple of weeks before our trip are starting to drop. I’ve noticed 5 months out seems to be the sweet spot as far as price and seats available. I’m nervous to wait too much longer though. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

    1. Hi Connie.

We’d be surprised for those dates to come down any further. It’s possible, but it’s equally likely it could go up. Prime spring break.

      Aloha.

  35. Aloha –

Thanks for the great website and travel information! Our group of 9 (7 adults, a 2.5 year old and a ~1 year old) will be traveling to Maui (OGG) from Houston (IAH (or could use HOU)) from June 9, 2018 to June 16, 2018. In your opinion, what price range represents the best deal I will find?

    Mahalo

    1. Hi Reese.

For Saturday to Saturday travel in summer, looks like $1,200. Midweek is from mid $900’s.

      Aloha.

  36. Aloha! Our family of 6 is planning to travel from Sioux Falls, SD, to Kahului, July 19-26, 2018. Currently, there is one flight available for $850 per person – all others are $1000+. The $850 seems like a good price, but why only one flight? Could you please advise whether this is a good price or if you anticipate this price to decrease or any of the other flights to go down after December/January for our area .

Thank you! We appreciate any advice you can give.

    1. Hi Julie.

Correct. That is a very good deal with a fast connection. Would suggest you grab that.

      Aloha.

  37. I plan on flying to Maui from Sacramento first week of Feb 2018, it seems that hawaiian has gone on sale from bay area airports but not Sacramento. will I see any sales out of Sacramento? How about Alaska Airlines, have not seen a sale yet either. Will Southwest have any Flights in Feb?
    thanks,
    gunner

    1. Hi Mike.

No SWA in February. Sacramento is already very well priced at from $362 to $464 RT in February. Not likely to improve.

      Aloha.

  38. Hi
Please could you help me.We want to fly to Kona,Big Island 8/6 -8/17/2018 from Seattle and the cheapest fare is £800 return at the moment with Delta.I know it is main season but I find this rather expensive.Do you think I should wait?
    Many thanks
    Danja

    1. Hi Danja.

Yes do wait. A lot could happen between now and then including more flights on that route. Once we hit August, demand is substantially lower than peak of summer.

      Aloha.

      1. Oh no,I am so sorry but I am from the UK and made a mistake and got the currency wrong.I meant to write $800 and not £800 return.
Is your advice the same and what would be a good price in $ for these dates?
        Many,many thanks
        Danja

  39. Thanks for your great website and advice!

My partner and I have a destination wedding planned to Kauai in September. We were wondering if you know of any deals for flying multiple people on the same airline? We would be flying out of Portland, Oregon.

My family is trying to fly out of Salt Lake City. Is there a better time to book for that city? Would they get cheaper fares flying out to Oregon?

Thank you for all of your help, I appreciate it!

    1. Hi Maddie.

All airlines have group rate desks for 10 people or more traveling together. And yes Portland will almost always be cheaper than SLC.

      Aloha.
