I’ve been watching fares for a few weeks to travel from Chicago to Honolulu one way on Sunday June 3rd. Haven’t seen lower than 532 with good connections thru the west coast. American has so many daily flights on this route. Shouldn’t prices drop? If so, when? Prices have been going up 5 to 10 dollars this week. Should I keep watching?

Hello,
My husband and I are planning on a trip to Kauai from NY any time next year. We are flexible. Whats the best time to travel? Thanks for all the help and time you take to reply all the messages.
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Maria.
There’s nothing specific that we can offer different than the post on which you are commenting. Spring and fall (except spring break). Great times of year for weather and less crowding. Airline of your choice since you’ll be switching planes at some point in any event.

We have a family of 4 going to Hawaii July 7-21, 2018. The closest airports are GSP, ATL, and CLT. We check into Punalu’u, Hawaii on the 7th. Then travel to Maui on the 14th. Back home on the 21st. Could you give any advice on the cheapest way to fly?
Here’s something I’ve never seen in your “Cheapest Time to Fly” section:
I’ve known for years that airfares vary by day of week, and that different departure and arrival airports can make a difference in which days are cheapest to fly. We know we may have to change planes either or both ways at HNL
* Assuming no holidays or special events are occurring, which days of the week are usually cheapest from SJC to KOA or ITO? Is there any fare difference flying into Kona or Hilo?
* Likewise, which days are usually cheapest from LIH to SJC?
* Finally, since we plan to spend time on the Big Island first, then fly to LIH, does it matter what day or from which airport we fly inter-island?
Thanks for any help you can give.
Beat of Hawaii
Hi again Bruce.
Cheapest days are mid-week. We usually say that on sales, but it isn’t 100% true. More like 85% true. That’s true in both directions, all islands. Inter-island is a little different. Fridays and Sundays can be both pricey and busy due to local traffic. Otherwise, same general suggestions.
Aloha.

We are traveling from lax to Seattle. Staying in seattle July 21 to 27 and then fly to Maui for vacation 7/27 to 8/10/2018. We have our accommodations in maui already. Can be flexible with our days in Seattle. When should I buy our tix? 5 traveling. Flights to HI are around $780 RT now. Hearing that flights will go to around $400 in July 2018 to HI. Is thast true. If so, that would be a, significant savings for us. Thoughts?

Hi Brooke.
Nothing in Hawaii is more than nice aloha wear. As for “fine dining,” come with very moderate expectations so that you aren’t disappointed. That term doesn’t really describe anything on Kauai. You can read the Yelp reviews here: https://www.yelp.com/biz/the-kauai-grill-princeville.

Hello!
We are planning a 2-week vacation to Hawaii and Maui in July (dates and itinerary are flexible but need to return no later than first week of August). Home airport is DEN. Fares have been running around $1000-1200 for a multi-stop itinerary (preferred itin is DEN-ITO and then OGG-DEN). Should we wait to see if fares go down or do you recommend we secure our flights now?
Your advice is greatly appreciated!! Thank you so much!
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Dana.
It is high season which speaks to buying now. If you are very flexible, you can try waiting and we’ll see what happens. There’s nothing we know of immediately, but it seems that more flights to Hawaii from Denver are on the horizon.
Aloha.

Aloha,
I will be traveling from PDX – HNL June 11ish – 19ish. I understand that flying during this time is expensive, but am curious if prices will drop the closer I am to June (say April?) Tickets are currently $680.00 roundtrip. Any advice would be appreciated.
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Andrea.
Possible but definitely not likely. Would suggest buying now for those June dates.
Aloha.

Aloha!! Planning a trip from SF to Oahu towards the end of July. Airfare appears to be steadily around $660 per person, ever since I’ve been tracking. (although i’m mad at myself for missing when it dropped to under $500 for a day or so !you guys posted the low fares and I was still unsure if I was going at that time. Big boo on my part) Just wondering if you anticipate it go to up, if I wait any longer to book? Thank you!!
Beat of Hawaii
Hi DH.
It is too hard to predict. SF will most likely see more competition and new flights. That could help keep downward pressure on prices for end of July. If you’re a gambling person, then wait.

Aloha!
I need to book 8 people for a family reunion from Newark to Lihue from July 25, 2018 – August 4, 2018. The price I am seeing now is about $1220 per person with a stopover in S.F. going and Denver returning. Do you think I should wait to see if the prices drop or should I just bite the bullet and purchase the tickets because my group is so large? The price actually increased $10 since Sunday…I wish there was a magic fairy who could tell me that the prices won’t drop and to just buy now. 🙂 with no regrets.
United is my preference because I have an economy plus subscription.
Thank you so much for your advice!
Penny
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Penny.
Any flexibility on dates. If not, then not sure price will improve by waiting. If you can change Saturday return by one day either way, you’ll save $100. If you come back 2 days later, you’ll save $250. On United.
Aloha.

We are traveling from San Jose California to Maui leaving March 30 and returning April 6. When would be the best time to buy tickets. I have been watching fares and they are falling a little bit but don’t know when to pull the lever. What should I expect to pay for a non-stop flight. Any help is appreciated. Thank you
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Linda.
Your peak of spring break flights are running from about $850 to $1,000, which is as expected. Doubtful those will improve and availability could become an issue. Unless you can change your dates, probably best to book now. If you have flexibility on not flying or anything last minute, then it could work to just wait it out. No other obvious options.
Aloha.

Hi,
My wife and i plan to travel to hawaii from NY in May. Now the tickets are sale by 700US$. If we can get a sale for flights departing from LA (US$400) do you think Worth travel to LA and get a plane from there to hawaii?
Or maybe this price from NY probably go down next year?
Murphy K
Aloha,
We are planning a trip from Phoenix to Maui – May 12 – 21m, 2018. Right now American Airline fares are running $729, do you think they will have a sales in the next couple of months or should I go ahead and purchase tickets now. We like flying non-stop so AA is our only choice at this point.
Mahalo!!
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Murphy.
On this route and time frame, our gut call is to go ahead and buy it. We do see better deals and more flights ahead for Phoenix. But probably just not soon.
Aloha.
Todd
Hi!
Based on your recommendation, for my May-June 2018 trip to Kauai I started looking at departing flights from New Orleans on Tuesday and Wednesday and returning Thursday or Friday. As you predicted the fare dropped from $1100+ to $878.
Do you think that will lower more or should I go ahead and book it?
Thank you so much!
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Todd.
Gut feeling again is to go ahead and get it. If it does drop further it isn’t likely going to be by much.
Aloha.

Hi!
My fiance and I are gonig on our honeymoon on Monday, March 26 (to kauai) and flying home to Atlanta from maui on Saturday April 7. Flights have recently gone up. Should I keep waiting it out, or are they only going to get worse? Thanks!
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Julie.
You’ve got yourself in the peak of spring break. No deals should be expected, it could get worse or availability may become limited. Suggest buying now for those dates.
Aloha.

Girls trip planned for May 24-30, 2018 from Houston, TX to Honolulu. Should we wait for Southwest Airline flights and fares to be published? If not, when should we purchase airline tickets and which airline?

My daughter and son in law live in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is in the Air Force. We want to plan a trip in May 2018 for at least a week or week in half. We will be leaving RDU in NC. We can plan our trip around the best rates. Can you give me some good advice on when to try to leave and return to get the very best rates and what the rates might look like?
Tj
We Re traveling from Phoenix to Maui 06/23/18 through 07/07/18. I have been watching airfare on a regular basis. Hawaiian’s fares are higher than I’ve ever seen for the June/July season in excess of $1100.00 per person for coach. I thought fares would start going down a little bit, but the opposite seems to be the case. Do you have any words of encouragement?
Thank you so much for your help!
Beat of Hawaii
Hi TJ.
No real encouragement for your dates unfortunately. Those Saturdays are the most peak dates of summer.
Aloha.

Hello! Any updates for flying from New York / New Jersey to Hawaii around mid-April? When should I purchase & at what price? Which Hawaii airport would technically be the cheapest one to fly to?
You mentioned that Seattle is benefiting the most, would it make sense to fly to Seattle first from NY then go to Hawaii from there?
Thank you! Appreciate all of your help!
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Nora.
Either EWR or JFK to Honolulu or Maui. Current pricing for those dates starts mid $600’s. Might go down by $50 or so. That is with a good connection. Nonstops running $100 or so higher. Just keep watching for sales. No one knows when that will be.
No intermediate stops don’t make sense unless you’re doing a real stopover.
Aloha.

Hello: Asking for some of your expert advice.
Love your news letter- it’s very informative and helpful.
My question is : Do inter island flights ever go on sale? We are traveling inter island from Kona to Lithue April 2nd. Will any of the new competitors be competing and offering inter island seat sales ? Should we book in advance or wait till closer to our travel date ?
Any advice will be appreciated.
Thank you

Hello!
My husband and I plan to travel from Milwaukee, WI to Maui the first week of June 2018. Can you please tell me the best time to purchase airline tickets and a good rate to look for? We’ll be first-time Hawaii visitors. Thank you!
Terri
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Terri.
Mid $700’s would be a good target. For that you’ll need to conclude your trip by June 7. Those prices could appear at any time – no one knows. Add about $100 or so if you’ll still be traveling through 3rd week in June, but after June 7. Last week in June will be much more expensive.
Aloha.

Hi, planning on going to Maui in early May from LA/OC. What would be the best time to buy tickets? Looks like they’re still pretty high at this time.
Pam W
We will be traveling July 1-9, 2018 (Sunday-Monday) to Kauai from the east coast, Charlotte NC area. We are flexible by a day or so but Saturday departure is very expensive. I have found mid $900 for a good flight, one stop to Phoenix. Should we book or wait until after the new year? I have heard prices may go down as Southwest will begin booking flights to Hawaii starting in 2018.
Thanks
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Pam.
Highly unlikely that Southwest will arrive by then or impact your pricing. $900 is a very good price for that route and dates. Bird in hand indicates buying now.
Aloha.

Hello!
What a great forum you have with wonderful information!
We are planning a trip from Las Vegas to Honolulu leaving June 17th, 2018 for 8 days. There’s a fare from AA for approx $750 a person (includes taxes and fees). The fare is part of a package that also includes a mini van rental for the duration.
I have never planned a trip to Hawaii before, so I am wondering if I should grab this fare now, or should I wait?
Thank you in advance for your response and insight. It is greatly appreciated!
Warmest regards, Lucy
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Lucy.
Good price for your dates including the car. We don’t envision anything re Las Vegas pricing that would indicate waiting.
Aloha.

Hi!
I’m planning an anniversary family trip to Kauai and to ensure I could get an oceanfront view around those dates, I booked the condo this past summer for 31 May – 9 June 2018. (I could adjust the days a bit if needed.) We’ll be leaving from New Orleans or Gulfport, MS, depending on airfares. The New Orleans’ prices have not moved in months (~$1100-1200), and where a month and a half ago the Gulfport prices were down $100-200, they have also been the same since (~$1300). Ideally, I’d like to be more around $900-1100 like from a few months ago vice the current fares.
Is it unrealistic to think those lower prices will show up again? Should I just buy the tickets now or wait?
Thanks much for your advice!
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Todd.
Yes running $1,100 plus. Problem is that your return day is the first Saturday of peak summer. Not good for pricing. If you can shift your trip to earlier by a few days, you’re likely to see much better pricing. So May 29 to June 7 would already save you $200. And that should improve somewhat if you wait a few months. Best hope target price for mid-week is $700 with fast connection.
Aloha.

Traveling to Oahu from July 2nd to July 12th, 2018. When is the best time to book flights for this time frame? Should we book now or will prices decrease if we wait.
Thank you.
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Kim.
That is the highest of peak summer dates. So generally we’d suggest those get booked as far in advance as possible. If you are very flexible, next summer may have more opportunities for deals, as we have already seen and may reoccur. We don’t know any more specifically at this time.
Aloha.

My husband and I are flying to The Big Island on March 13 and on to Lihue on March 18. Wē Purchased Our tickets back In October, but my daughter and her Family are flying to Kauai to Meet us on March 16. Could you please tell me when would be the best time for them to book their flights? Mahalo!

We may have sales that extend later into March, but we may not. That is spring break.

Hi!
Planning a family vacation from LAX-OGG at the end of july (7/26/18 – 8/1/18). I know summer is high season and you should buy early, but with the possible upcoming sales I am conflicted. So…wondering if a drop summer fares below $700 is anticipated for main cabin? What about first class, do those tickets usually go on sale at all?
Please share any thoughts and feedback…I greatly appreciate your website and wealth of knowledge!
Thank you!
Tracy
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Tracy.
No first class does not go on sale. It can go up and down, but not in the same way as economy does.
LA to Maui might be better priced for end of July, but that isn’t a certainty at all. We’re waiting to see what will happen with new flights and competition.
Aloha.

I’m looking to purchase a trip to Hawaii from (Santa Monica, CA) LAX for my husband’s 40th birthday. We will be traveling with a 6 month old. Please share your thoughts. Any of your expertise will be appreciated. I’m planning to book for the last weekend in February of first weekend in March. Should I purchase on Cyber Monday or wait ? Buy ala cart? or bundle with a vacation package?
Thank you for any help on this. I love that you have made this resource available!
Best Regards,

Beat of Hawaii
Hi Natalie.
Thank you. Suggest purchasing today. We like buying a la carte where you choose each element and contract directly with the providing company. There won’t be savings in a package, but you might find it more convenient.

Hello, I’m planning to travel from the East Coast (NY/NJ) to Hawaii in mid-April 2018, based on your post, should we wait till more routes/discounts become available? Would you keep us updated via your newsletter? It’ll be my first time going there, hoping for flights less than $700… is that possible?
Thanks so much!!
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Nora.
Please subscribe to get our deal updates. It looks like you’re flying from NYC. $700 is about what you can expect to pay. Not sure you can plan to do better except with lots of slow connections.
Aloha.

Hello. I am planning a surprise trip to Hawaii for her 40th birthday. We have access to a home on the ocean on the big island. I’d like to get a couple days in Honolulu on either end of the trip. My only firm date is that we need to be back home in SE Wisconsin by April 4-5, 2018. I’d like to spend about 10 days total on both islands. What are your thoughts on one way to the west coast the one way out there or would I be better off going one way to all destinations? If going one way yo the west coast, what cities would you reccommend flying to the islands from for the best fares?
Thank you so much for your help!!
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Scott.
Multiple tickets with no real stopover introduces issues like missed connection, inter-lining of baggage, possibility of multiple security/TSA visits, etc. It’s possible, but suggest buyer beware on that one.
You’re traveling during the peak of spring break, as I’m sure you are aware. Having said that, American has the best fares at that time, starting in low $800’s, which isn’t bad. From MKE.
Aloha.

Aloha,
We spent 2 weeks in Hawaii every year in April. Planning to spent our spring break for a family of 4 from 4/4/18 to 4/18/18. Seattle to Maui on Hawaiian Air non stop is our prefer pick. Current price is $697 same price we paid last year. Just notice the price drop from $860 this week. Should we book our tickets now or wait till 2018 when the price is expect to drop per your article?
Mahalo
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Patrick.
Your return is after spring break – that should help. Gut call on this one is to wait with a target in the mid to high $500’s.

We’ll be flying IAH/HNL July 7, 2018 and returning July 14. Right now (Nov 15) flights are > $1100/pp. Do you believe there will be price drops IAH/HNL in Apr-Jun, or should we look for tickets from SAN or SAC (or even LAX)? Thx (second post) /jrh

Hello! My husband and I are planning our first trip to Hawaii for our 25th wedding anniversary. We would like to spend one week on The Big Island and one week on Maui. We would be flying from Syracuse NY to The Big Island on Saturday 4/21/18. We would like to fly home out of Maui on Saturday 5/5/18. Prices for a multi city ticket are over $1000. Should we wait or buy tickets now. Thank you so much for your help!
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Tammy.
About the best fare you’re going to ever find in that market is low $800’s. Obviously not available yet for later spring. Also it might not happen for Saturday’s, which are typically about $100 more RT.
Aloha.

I am currently trying to plan my wedding in Koloa, Kauai. I personally have never been to Kauai, let alone Hawaii all together. I just love the idea of having a destination wedding in tropical weather & beautiful scenery. Do you have any suggestions of when is the best time to host a wedding in this island? We were thinking either some time in February or end of April. I wanted to mainly consider the airfare (from SF Bay Area-Sac) and the weather. I understand Kauai has very unpredictable rainfalls, which is why I am currently having this dilemma. Thank you so much for your advice!
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Lucky.
Weather is more predictable in April than in February. But likely either will work and the percentage of weddings that get rained out is minimal. We consider rain during a ceremony a blessing. Airfares will probably be about the same for both periods.
Aloha.

Hello!
Looking for some advice as we are heading our first trip to Maui from Portland Oregon April 7-16th. This will be a family trip with my wife and three kids (4yr old and 9yr old twins). We are finding round trip tickets between $850-$1150 on Alaska. We will have a companion ticket with our mileage plan, but aren’t sure if we should book quite yet. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!
Sam
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Sam.
Might come down if you wait. You have a Saturday departure which is a problem. Also airlines are still considering that spring break, but might not as it gets closer. Two weeks later RT on Alaska is $477.

Hi how’s it going?
I’m planning a roundtrip flight from El Paso to HNL in February 7-21 2018. When I first checked maybe 10 weeks ago, it was $676. About 2 weeks ago it was $716. Today its $616. I think I should just buy it now since I need to cement leave dates with work soon anyway. Or do you think it will continue to drop?
Appreciate what you’re doing! Thanks in advance!
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Steven.
That’s a great fare. We suggest you jump on it now.

My son is in the Army and he is stationed at Schofield and I want to go and see him for the holidays. I was hoping to get a cheap package deal from Houston to Honolulu Hawaii. The dates would be December 28th 3rd to January 2nd 2018. I’ve tried several different places and haven’t found a really good deal as of yet and the times coming really fast. I would love it if someone could help me with this. I have no family here and he’s all I’ve got and I don’t want to spend Christmas alone. Please help! Thank you
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Penny.
That will cost from about $1,000 to $1,300 for your dates, depending on stops and duration of travel. To pay less you’d either need to go in early December or in January, when fares will be less than $700 RT.
Aloha.

I want to buy two round trip tickets from San Francisco to Lihue, March 17 to March 24, 2018. Based on the current new of Southwest entering the Hawaii market in late 2017/ early 2018, and Hawaiian Airlines receiving new planes and routes in 2017/2018, when should I buy tickets? When would be too late to buy cheaper tickets. I know this a busy time to buy tickets, since it is in the Spring Break Season.
Thanks,
Walter
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Walter.
Southwest isn’t coming until the better part of a year from now as far as we now know. So that doesn’t impact you. Doubtful new HA planes will either.
Not only spring break but Saturdays, which are almost always higher anyway. Looks like $865. Could improve if you can take the change. Not likely however. If you can fly from Oakland, it is about $240 cheaper.
Aloha.

We are have a cruise scheduled for April so will fly from Orlando to Honolulu April 12-23, 2018. Today I see prices for 671 ppl.
Do you expect that price to go down? When I looked earlier the prices were in the 900s so don’t want to miss a good price. What are your thoughts?
Thank you for your help
Of course the prices change daily! Higher yesterday
Beat of Hawaii
Hi Suzanne.
That’s a good price and it is doubtful that it will get better.

We are traveling from San Jose California to Maui leaving March 30 and returning April 6. When would be the best time to buy tickets. I have been watching fares and they are falling a little bit but don’t know when to pull the lever. What should I expect to pay for a non-stop flight. Any help is appreciated. Thank you
Aloha,
We are planning a trip from Phoenix to Maui – May 12 – 21m, 2018. Right now American Airline fares are running $729, do you think they will have a sales in the next couple of months or should I go ahead and purchase tickets now. We like flying non-stop so AA is our only choice at this point.
Mahalo!!
Hi Murphy.
On this route and time frame, our gut call is to go ahead and buy it. We do see better deals and more flights ahead for Phoenix. But probably just not soon.
Aloha.
Thanks!
We Re traveling from Phoenix to Maui 06/23/18 through 07/07/18. I have been watching airfare on a regular basis. Hawaiian’s fares are higher than I’ve ever seen for the June/July season in excess of $1100.00 per person for coach. I thought fares would start going down a little bit, but the opposite seems to be the case. Do you have any words of encouragement?
Thank you so much for your help!
Thank you
Kim D
Hi Kim.
Nothing new upcoming and there is one airline. Also that is peak of spring break. Suggest buying immediately.
Aloha.
Thank you- sounds like good advice.

Hello!
My husband and I plan to travel from Milwaukee, WI to Maui the first week of June 2018. Can you please tell me the best time to purchase airline tickets and a good rate to look for? We’ll be first-time Hawaii visitors. Thank you!
Terri
Thanks
Aloha.
Aloha,
Will be traveling from PHL to Honolulu July 2nd to July 12th. When is the best time to book flights. Should we book now or will they decrease if we wait.
Mahalo!
Hi Kim.
Currently $878 on American with good connection. Very good price, would suggest buying now.
Aloha.
Traveling to Oahu from July 2nd to July 12th, 2018. When is the best time to book flights for this time frame? Should we book now or will prices decrease if we wait.
Thank you.
Mahalo!
Hi Pam.
We may have sales that extend later into March, but we may not. That is spring break.
Aloha.
Thank you!
Tracy
Hi Tracy.
No first class does not go on sale. It can go up and down, but not in the same way as economy does.
LA to Maui might be better priced for end of July, but that isn’t a certainty at all. We’re waiting to see what will happen with new flights and competition.
Aloha.
Aloha!
Best Regards,
Natalie
Hi Natalie.
Thank you. Suggest purchasing today. We like buying a la carte where you choose each element and contract directly with the providing company. There won’t be savings in a package, but you might find it more convenient.
Aloha.
Mahalo
Hi Patrick.
Your return is after spring break – that should help. Gut call on this one is to wait with a target in the mid to high $500’s.
Aloha.
Hi Tammy.
About the best fare you’re going to ever find in that market is low $800’s. Obviously not available yet for later spring. Also it might not happen for Saturday’s, which are typically about $100 more RT.
Aloha.
Aloha!
Thanks!
Sam
Hi Sam.
Might come down if you wait. You have a Saturday departure which is a problem. Also airlines are still considering that spring break, but might not as it gets closer. Two weeks later RT on Alaska is $477.
Aloha.
Hello
My husband and I have been wanting to take our kids to Hawaii, but every time we check, it is so expensive. Please advice us on what time of the year would be best/less expensive to go, and what island is more economical to visit. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Hi Sandra.
All of our advice in regards to the specific questions you asked is contained in this series of 7 posts.

Hi Steven.
That’s a great fare. We suggest you jump on it now.
Aloha.
Thank you
Thanks,
Walter
Hi Suzanne.
That’s a good price and it is doubtful that it will get better.
Aloha.
