  1. Planning a trip from May 31st – June 11th or 12th with our family and another family. Four adults, 3 (16 year olds), & 2 (12 year olds). We will be staying in Honolulu and then traveling to Maui. We live in Indianapolis, Indiana. Any flight advice? Should we try to book flights to CA then try to get separate sale flights to Hawaii?

  2. Great site that I just happened upon. Looking to travel to Maui from west coast on July 21-28. Prices seem to still be a bit elevated and haven’t changed much in the last few months. How long should I wait to see if prices adjust downward before I ought to pull the trigger?
    Thanks for any advice.

    1. Hi Jay.

Hard to predict for your dates. We do expect to see more flights announced for summer and increased competition. On the other hand airlines are savvy and will do whatever they can to keep your Saturday peak season dates from being too cheap. You also didn’t mention where on west coast and SEA and SAN are quite far apart for example. Bird in hand – best deal at the moment is from SAN at just under $700 RT on Hawaiian.

      Aloha.

  3. Hi there. We are looking to do our honeymoon in Hawaii coming up QUICK, in February or the first week in March 2018. Do yohhave any advice?
    Thanks!

    1. Hi Tiffany.

You are commenting on the post that has all of our best tips and tricks for planning a trip to Hawaii. Not sure what more specifically you would like help with.

      Aloha.

  4. We just booked our first Hawaiian vacation and we will want to fly out of STL (St. Louis, MO) into the Big Island (KOA) on Oct. 3. However, we are staying a week at the Big Island, then we will try to find an inter-island flight over to Kauai at the Lahue Airport (LIH). So 16 days after we arrive in Hawaii, we will fly out out LIH back to STL. My problem is trying to find a decent priced 1-way ticket there and back for 2 people. Will there be better prices on 1 way tickets since we are going to be leaving Hawaii from a different airport than what we arrived at? Right now the cheapest flights I have found on other travel sites is about $860 per person there and back, and that’s not counting the island hopping airfare that we will have to get.

    Any suggestions, please.

    Thank you in advance!

    1. Hi Lisa.

On United, into KOA and out of LIH $738 RT, plus inter-island. With quick connections. About as expected. Not very likely to improve, unless you want to spend 22 hours getting here and back instead of 12, in which case you might find later deals in $500’s.

      Aloha.

  5. Looking to come visit mid-late 2018…Right now flights from Nov are ranging from $700-$1000….do you think they will go down??

    Thanks

    1. Hi Brandy,

Flying we assume from Bay Area, it is too soon to book. That is unless you mean to say over holidays such as Thanksgiving, in which case you should book now. That is expected holiday pricing.

      Aloha

  6. Hello there! My husband and I are looking to fly from Phoenix to Honolulu around the 2nd week of October for about 8 days. Right now I’m seeing flights for about $700. When do you suggest buying tickets?
I appreciate your response, thank you!

  7. Wonderful Website. We are thinking of going from LAX to HNL May 19-27 2018. Prices seem to hover around $650-700. Should we wait or lock in now?

    1. Hi Dottie.

We will probably see sales in next month or two on that route for late spring. Target price about $400 and you’ll need to be patient.

      Aloha.

  8. Hi my family is planning on taking a trip to Maui March 17-25, right now we are seeing tickets at $600 round trip from SLC. Are we likely to see a drop or will they continue to rise? Thank you!!

    1. Hi Devin.

For your dates, starting $649 one-stop or about $200 more nonstop. Very high demand dates, so not looking good for improvement without a date change. New routes in that time period are not likely.

      Aloha.

  9. Hello! Thank you in advance for any suggestions you might have. We are traveling from Houston to Maui around May 14, 2018. We are a little flexible. Is it cheaper to fly on Sunday the 13th? Then we travel from Maui to Honolulu on May 21st and then back to Houston sometime Memorial Day weekend around May 27th. Once again, we are flexible on the return trip and are curious as to which day is usually cheaper to fly either Sat or Sun. Any advice you can give would be appreciated.

    Wendy

    1. Hi Wendy.

Your dates seem a bit cheaper than nearby dates. $800-$1,000 depending on stops/duration. Not sure it will improve.

      Aloha.

  10. Hi!
I am so happy to have stumbled on this site!. My family is traveling from Phoenix to Maui on August 3rd through August 10th. Should we wait to buy tickets? Will Southwest be doing flights by then? Any suggestions would be appreciated as we have 6 people flying.
    Thank you!

    1. Hi Janet.

Just a gut call – try waiting. You’re towards the end of high season, and Phoenix is starting to see better than expected pricing. That indicates something is shaking, and it could well play out in your favor. Availability should remain okay. Let us know how it works out.

      Aloha.

  11. Hi,

We are looking to fly from NYC around 10/20 and back on 11/3 most likely flying into LIH and out of OGG. Right now I am seeing between $800 and $1000 per ticket. Should we wait?

    AU

  12. My wife and I are planning on flying SJC to OGG on Fridays Aug 24-31, 2018. We usually travel there at other times of the year. Is this after the high season? Right now flights are about $580 RT. Should we wait to purchase tickets? Mahalo.

  13. Hello!!! Happy Sunday from the tundra! My husband and I are looking at flying out to Kona in mid october from the Appleton Airport a small airport near us. Right not tickets are 783 round trip. Would you suggest booking now or should we wait a few months? Thank you so much!! We are excited to soak up some sunshine!

    Heidi

    1. Hi Heidi.

We are seeing $756 RT with quick connections on multiple dates mid-October. It isn’t going to get much better than that for your airport and dates, so suggest buying now.

      Aloha.

  14. Hello,
My family and I are planning a trip to honolulu from boise id june 20 to 27 2018. We had paid for our hotel and planned on waiting to see what was going on with southwest flights. We have been looking and seeing flights for 750 to 800. There is 5 of us going. Would it be wise to wait?

    Thank you!
    Angelo

    1. Hi Angelo.

Highly unlikely that SWA will be in place and be able to help for your time frame. For your high season dates, $725 on Delta with pretty good connection is best price and isn’t bad. Not sure it will improve unless you want to drive to Seattle or someplace. Even that isn’t guaranteed. Suggest buying.

      Aloha.

  15. My wife and I would like to travel to the big island with dates floating before or after November 14. We will leave Portland Oregon and hope to spend 7 days there and then go to Kauai for 5 days. Will SWA have any effect on prices then and what will be good prices then?

    1. We are flying from Sacramento, CA to Kauai sept 13-27 2018. Finding flights at $611 now. Should we wait for better prices? Where do you see these prices dropping to? Thank you for your advice.

  16. Hello! We have a wedding date set for August 10th, 2018 and are planning to fly folks into HNL from the west coast. Tickets for arrival any day during that 2nd week of August seem outrageously expensive now ($600-$700 RT from either OAK, SAN, or SEA). When do you suggest is the best time to tell our guests to start looking at plane tickets without scaring them off with currently high prices? Do you think prices will drop to around $400-$500?

Thanks for your help (this post has been super helpful)!!!

    1. Hi Susan.

Thank you. It is hard to say with any degree of likelihood what will happen this summer, due to new competition. Seattle currently has $550 RT, while others are more in $650 range. You can just wait it out and see what happens, since August is slower relative to say June/July. Alternatively you’ll have to just pay up and not look back. We’d give 50/50 odds of seeing $500 on those routes for your dates.

      Aloha.

  17. Hi,
We are planning on going to Hawaii from Charlotte, NC the 2nd week of Nov in 2018.

Can you please let me know when is a good time to look at air fares that are reasonable?

I appreciate any information you can provide.

    Thank you,
    Dorene

    1. Hi Dorene.

Currently $818 RT for that time period on multiple airlines. That’s probably about as good as it is going to get. Suggest buying now if you can.

      Aloha.

  18. Hello!

My husband and I are planning a return trip to Hawaii this year to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. We went on our honeymoon and stayed on Waikiki beach and plan on returning to the same area. We are looking at staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village this time during the middle of September. Our dates are some what flexible, anytime between September 17th and October 1st. Right now the package deal for 7 nights flying out of Dayton, Ohio are $1300 a person. I thought that seemed very reasonable but now I’m wondering if we should wait until we are closer to going or booking the flight separately. Any advice?

  19. Hi there,
I just found your site and I appreciate the information. I’m planning my lifelong dream trip to Hawaii but I have no idea where to begin. I would like to leave from the Tampa, Florida, area any time in 2018, and I’d be happy to arrive probably anywhere in Hawaii. I was wondering if you would please give me an idea about best time to travel (I see fall and winter is best?) and best airport/cities to leave from? For example, I checked Google flights, and currently, leaving from Tampa to Honolulu in June for a 2 week trip, (June is the furthest date showing currently), range from the low $800s to the low $1000s per person (with 1-2 stops). I am in no rush, but I want to go in 2018, so do you think I will see better deals later in the year? Thank you so much in advance and I hope to hear back. Thank you. 🙂

    1. Hi Christina.

Any of the major FL airports will price somewhat comparably. Yes spring and fall. You can book flights up to 330 days in advance but for spring and fall it may work better price-wise to book in last 90 to 180 days. Best off-season price we are currently seeing is just under $800 with fast connections (or up to $200 less with very long connections). You might do a little better but that’s a good budgetary target

      Aloha.

  20. Planning my 10yr wedding anniversary for August 8-18. Booked a cruise and hotel waiting for a flight. We’re Flying out of JFK to HNL price is about $1000 right now. Any suggestions on purchasing. Thank you

    1. Hi Sabrina.

Might improve by waiting. Currently yes $1,000 for nonstop or up to a couple of hundred less with stops. On the good side, it probably won’t go up further and availability should not become an issue. No time frame when any reduction might occur.

      Aloha.

  21. We’re taking my in-laws to Kauai from April 15th-22nd leaving from Seattle. A friend of ours who lives on the Oahu told us to wait until January to buy flights but I keep seeing prices go up! We have a companion fare and miles to use on Alaska, so we’d love to fly them. Do you think prices will go down or up from this point? Thanks for all your advice!

    1. Hi Graham.

You’re flying on Sundays which, as you see in post will almost always cost more. Your exact days are low $500’s or about $100 less with a stop. Return on Monday and nonstop drops $100 and 1-stop drops $50.

Could improve but no clear indication it will.

      Aloha.

  22. Hi,

I was curious if paying 830$s for Las Vegas to Lihue in June is reasonable or if it would be best to wait (completely flexible for the entire month).

    Best,

    Sean C

    1. Hi Sean.

There are some $700 fares on Delta in June with not bad connection. Or about $100 more on Hawaiian. Could improve for first week or so in June, but might not. Hope so.

      Aloha.

  23. Hello,

My husband and I are planning a trip for our 1 year anniversary as we were not able to go on a honeymoon after we got married. Our anniversary is around Labor Day but are flexible as far as what season to go to. We live in WI and are open to fly out of Green Bay, Milwaukee, or Chicago. What season/month would you recommend for the cheapest travel? Thank you so much!

    1. Hi Abigail.

Post pretty much has everything you’re asking about. Starting mid-August through fall (except holidays). Great time to be here. Budget about $700 RT from any of those airports.

      Aloha.

  24. Hi. Looking to fly from Charlotte, NC to Honolulu sometime between March 30 and April 8 for 7 days. We’re willing to drive as far as Atlanta for the best airfare. Thanks in advance.

  25. Hi – we are planning a vacation in the second half of July (2 adults and 3 kids – one will be 2 years old). Prices from LAX to HNL are about $727 now. Should we book now or will the Southwest competition drive prices down? Thanks!

    1. Hi Lisa.

Not sure SWA will be here by then, but there are other competitive pressures that may help this summer from LA. Comes down to whether you can wait for the unknown, or need to lock something in. If you can wait, you might be in for a pleasant surprise on pricing.

      Aloha.

  26. Hello!

My husband and I are travelling from LAX to LIH on May 2nd, 2018. Pricing has dropped since September/October time frame, especially on Hawaiian. I was hoping to get your opinion on whether you think we should go ahead and book or if you think more downward pressure is expected.

    Thanks so much!

  27. Hello,
Looking to plan a trip To Honolulu anytime in 2018 when it is the cheapest. Traveling from Nashville, Tennessee. Can you please give me some details when to travel and places to stay for appx. 10 days. Like I said there will be 2 of us, and can travel whenever. We can leave from other Airports also, such as Evansville, Indiana, or Louisville, KY.

  28. Hello,

My husband and I are hoping to take a 8-10 night trip from MDT to OGG in either Sep, Oct, or Nov 2018. I have 2 questions, please:
    – Do you think that Southwest branching out to HI will affect fares across the US, or just from the West Coast?
    – Do you think that fares will decrease the closer we get to fall 2018? I’ve found some pretty cheap fares on United – about $150 less than normal, which is amazing for a little airport like Harrisburg; do you recommend booking now?

Thank you kindly for your advice!

  29. Hello,

Thank you for all of the good information about 2018. My fiance and I are planning on flying from San Jose to Honolulu in the beginning of Sept. I checked prices today and they were going for $539! I remember checking in June 2017 for Sept 2017 and prices were only a little over $400. Should we wait until summer 2018 to book for Sept 2018?

    Happy New Year!
    Andrew

    1. Hi Andrew.

Yes that should get much better by waiting. No rush for September. Stay tuned as prices will probably fluctuate pretty wildly in next few months.

      Aloha.

  30. Hello,
My husband and I are going from Toronto (YYZ) to Kauai and have booked a stay for July 3-6, 2018 then plan to leave from Honolulu on the 7th and on to Australia. When I first looked at flights, the prices for July 3rd looked the best, but I wondered if it would be worth flying to OGG on July 2 for one night. Also, now it looks like leaving HNL on Monday, July 9th shows as the best price. We also haven’t picked an arrival city in Australia due to our daughter travel nursing. Any suggestions on the best alternative YYZ to LIH and HNL to SYD or other? Also, like many other inquiries, would it be best to book now or wait a couple of months? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

    1. Hi Diane.

We don’t follow Australia prices to any significant degree. But Jetstar often has the best prices. To Honolulu July 4 has less expensive prices in low $500’s – depending on return date of course. Staying on Maui for one night sounds exhausting and not productive financially.

      Aloha.

  31. Hello. My family is planning to travel from Oakland to Kona on June 14-20. Flights currently are $516. Would you recommend buying now or waiting since it is 6 months out? Thank you for your help.

  32. Congratulations on 10 fabulous years! Your site and responses to questions have been very helpful and your efforts are truly appreciated. We are a group of four planning a first-time visit to The Big Island, April 19-29, 2018. We will be traveling from Boston to Kona and would like to keep travel time to a minimum. Can you suggest a “grab-it-now!” fare we should be watching for? Many thanks!

    1. Hi Lindsey.

Thanks!! Currently $760 for your days with fast connection (13 hrs). Suggest buying now. It probably won’t get better unless you chance return from Sunday to mid-week or extend flight duration.

      Aloha.

  33. Hi, I’m looking to book a flight for late May (around the 20th) to early June 2018. Should I book now or do you think the prices will go down? Thanks!

        1. Hi Amanda.

Okay great. With a good connection (of under 15 hours each way), right now it is low to mid $900’s. See potential for that to drop by about $100 or so. Suggest waiting a bit long until we are say 90 days out or so.

          ALoha.

  34. Hello!

3 of us are looking to travel to Kauai and Oahu from May 1-10th flying out of Toronto. Most likely fly into Kauai and then leave from Oahu but wondering how early in advance we should book an inter-island flight? Also, how many days do you recommend on each of these islands?

    Thank you!!

    Anyssa

    1. Hi Anyssa.

Since there is only one company inter-island, prices won’t vary by much. Once you know your dates it is probably best to get that purchased too. We suggest the Hawaii Revealed guidebooks online or in print so you can plan your trip. Truth is you could easily spend the entire time on either island, or divide you time equally, or otherwise, just dependent on your wants and needs.

      Aloha.

  35. Howdy!
Planning a trip from Milwaukee to Maui on Jan 2, 2019, to Jan 9, 2019. I know it’s down the pipeline a full year, but any thoughts on flight cost for our budgeting?
    Thanking you in advance.
    Dave

    1. Hi Dave.

Holiday week will extend until 1/6/19 so it will probably cost $800’s to $900’s. If you were to travel a week or two later, maybe $600’s.

      Aloha.

  36. hello, taking my son for spring break around March 26th thru April 2nd from either MLI or ORD to HNL. Right now flights at $850 for either. Any suggestions on buying now or wait?

    Thanks so much

    1. Hi Hawaiibound.

We’re seeing about $1,000 with a good connection or save a little for a much longer ride. Peak of spring break so not likely to improve unless at last minute.

      Aloha.
