Heading to Honolulu from anywhere west coast where we can get a flight cheap enough from 7/31-8/10. Do you think prices will get any cheaper in a month or two? Which west coast city would you focus on? Hanks!
It’s definitely possible. Just stay tuned as we announce new routes and deals. The west coast cities in the post are the likely ones, like SAN, OAK, SJC.
Im taking my family 5 to Maui May 30-June 9 leaving from Denver Colorado. I’ve been watching prices for a while now…wondering if I should wait to see what Southwest has to offer? Do you think $700 is a good price with it going up rather than coming down? Should I wait till after spring to break to buy?
Southwest won’t be part of the equation by then. What we are seeing is starting at low $800’s with good connection. Less for very long duration. Not sure it will improve given you Saturday return. If you choose both ways mid-week, then mid $600’s. Doubtful of improvement.
Hello, im surprising the wife with a quick vacation to either LIH or HNL from SLC. I’m looking late September or anytime in October. Is there any chance rates will improve for us that fly out of slc. not partial to any airline or non stop vs 1 stop. Thank you for your time.
Yes hang out and there could well be better prices ahead. No rush to purchase for off-season dates. So maybe think of buying in early to mid summer with target price of mid to high $400’s.
Our family of 6 has a vacation rental on Maui from May 30 to June 6, 2018. The lowest airfare from Denver to OGG seems to be increasing from when I started watching about 6 weeks ago, from the $600 range to the $700 range. Do you think they will keep going up? Or should we wait for another sale? Also, are we in danger of planes filling up?
As you see, prices vary a lot based on speed of travel. Nonstop running low $800’s, and up to $200 cheaper for painfully slow. Probably better to wait, as there is the possibility of the nonstop pricing as low as mid $500’s. Can’t say for sure that will happen of course. But your dates are good – low-season, mid-week.
Hi.My wife and I,our 19 year old daughter and mother-inlaw are going to honolulu to visit family.I have been checking on flights from Pittsburgh,Pa.,cleveland,Oh.,and Baltimore,Md.our dates are between may 5th and may 19th.we would like to stay as long as possible for our most reasonable airline flights.Would you have any suggestions on what rates we should expect to pay per person round trip?Any Help would be greatly appreciated.
We are flying from Sacramento to Honolulu on Thursday, November 8th, 2018 and coming back Saturday, November 17th, 2018. When would be the best time to buy and also, would it be cheaper to fly out of Oakland or San Francisco and if so, how much cheaper?
November 17 is of course Thanksgiving travel, so that day might be problematic. Otherwise, you’re better off waiting until perhaps early to mid-summer. Hard to predict those airports with possibility of new flights coming. SMF could price about $100 higher, but can’t say for sure how that will shake out.
Good afternoon, can you tell me how soon should i book a flight from Washington, DC to Honolulu during to month of August. It looks like that month is cheapest for the summer months. On our last trip we went nonstop and wanted to do that again. There is not particular time in August that we have to go, so whenever is cheapest is what we would go with. Thanks in advance.
As indicated in post, for middle of August and after, you can safely wait a few months. For early August, may work better to buy now. Nonstop will remain more expensive and is running about $1,100. With a stop and a bit more duration, mid-August yields prices nearly $300 less.
Hello! My fiancee and I are flying from PHL to LIH in June for one week in Kauai and one week on the Big Island and then flying out of KOA back to PHL. I’ve been following a price that is $895 RT with a connection in LAX. I’ve read some of your blog articles and I know this the beginning of high season for travel to HI so am I right in thinking we likely won’t get prices better than this? We are willing to fly out of NYC or even BWI but I am not seeing better deals from those airports. Unless you think it’s best to wait and something better might come along?
Hello, we are travelling to Kona from Spokane 11/5 through 11/17 and need to book via Alaska Airlines as we have a companion ticket. Right now regular priced tickets based on us choosing higher priced flights for earlier arrival to Kona are close to $1,000 each which is a lot higher than what we’re used to paying. Do you know what the prime time to book for November travel is?
Hello,
My husband and I are traveling from LIT to HNL Sept 26 – Oct 4. Delta has been steady at $924. I know it’s early to book but I’m afraid it’ll go up. Does $924 main cabin seem fair?
Hello! We are planning in a family vacation LAX to OGG 7/26/18-8/1/18. Prices are currently down to 696 on Hawaiian. I have never been to Maui, would you please advise me of what the target price should be? What Is the best price we should hope for if we chance it and wait for a summer sale?
All of your wonderful advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Tracy
There are generally speaking no summer sales. This summer could be a little different due to new routes about to be introduced. Hard to predict that however. $700 is a good target price on that route in summer. Since you’re towards the end of peak summer, you can try waiting. But outcome is uncertain if you do.
First of all, thanks for all the great intel you have on this website! We will be going to Oahu from Denver 12/21-28 for a family reunion. I recently checked airfare and it is running about $1100 per person. Do you think this might go down or should we book now?
Hello,
I’m planning a family vacation for 6 around these dates 12/22-1/2. I’m also flexible on which Islands to visit but was thinking to do the big Island and one or two other Islands. I must use Delta because I have vouchers to use. When is the best time to book those tickets? Also, do you have a recommendation for the second or third island? Thanks in advance!
Suggest booking right away (at 330 days in advance). Including accommodations and car. Hard to suggest which other island to visit, as all are wonderful and unique. Research is indicated to find what would best suit you. More than 2 islands in 10 days is too much, considering you’ll lose over 1/2 day of your vacation each time you change islands.
Greetings,
Thank you for your site, it is appreciated. I would like to fly one way to Kauai from Albq NM on 6/2/2018 and return from Molokai to Albq, NM on 6/14/2018.
Outgoing date is flexible. Any advice on one way ticket purchases and or dates to get best fares?
Thank you!
Stephanie
$841 on American. $654 if you can depart on 5/31 instead. Doesn’t look good for price improvement due to factors including Memorial Day, summer, and your desired weekend travel.
Good Afternoon! We would like to fly from PHX to Kauai the second week of October. (flexible dates to help with airfare cost) Any wisdom on when to purchase tickets on flights. We need five tickets and I’m looking for a good deal.
Thanks a bunch!
Sharmon
Hello,
There are two of us flying from Seattle to Maui the last two weeks of Oct. this year. Fly out on a Thursday and back home on a Tuesday. I found two direct flights that are perfect from Alaska but they have gone up over $150 in just 3 weeks time, (I wasnt quite ready to buy them yet).
Should I purchase, or do you think with competition from SW it might bring them back down a bit?
SW won’t be impacting your choice, but other competition probably will. Suggest waiting as it is quite early to be booking for low season fall travel. Perhaps late spring.
Aloha,
Could you please tell me when would be the best time to buy tickets from Toronto via LAX or SFO to Honolulu. We are planning a trip for October 30 to November 15.
Mahalo!
If you are planning a true stopover that may change when to buy. Otherwise, currently $440 one-stop on United with short duration. Excellent price – would buy now if applicable. Otherwise wait until fall airfare sales which is late spring to mid summer.
Aloha! Thanks for all your hard work on this great website, and I’m sorry this message has to be so long. There is a time-sensitive aspect of this e-mail, so it would be great if you are able to take a look at this today, but I understand if you cannot.
I will be flying to Hawaii for a wedding on 6/28/18 and only recently got the date. We will be flying from NYC to HNL for the wedding, then to LIH, then back to NYC. I know we will be paying a premium on flights because we are particular about the date, time, and duration, and of course because they are during summer vacation.
We’d like to work on Wed 6/27 and take a red-eye that night from NYC to HNL. The best and almost cheapest flight that meets this parameter is currently $608 (Hawaiian Airlines 8:59P-5A, 1 stop in Las Vegas). Should I buy or wait?
Flights I’m looking at from HNL to LIH on 6/29 are $87 to $91. A flight leaving 9 AM or earlier would be ideal. Same question please.
We would like to leave the night of Saturday 7/7, LIH to NYC. The flight I liked is American Airlines 9:57P-3:30P, 1 stop at LAX. I saw 1 remaining ticket for $707 last night and bought it – it’s not a great price, but I don’t think it’s going to get cheaper, based on an app that predicts flight prices that I often use. The price of the next bucket of tickets was $791, and I bought one of those as I am going with my wife. I’m less certain this higher price will be as good as it gets. I bought these tickets about 10 hours ago (midnight EST) so am able to cancel one or both if you think it makes sense. While that app has been more useful than not over time, I think your specific experience is more valuable.
I’d really appreciate your advice on these three legs!
Prices for your dates will not get better – availability pricing will probably only get worse. It isn’t a time for bargains obviously. Would buy all of those now at prices indicated. They are in expected range.
HI, We are planning on going to Maui from Cleveland, Ohio on Nov.2 and returning on Nov. 10. Right now I the best prices I see are around $800.00. My daughter and her family already bought tickets at that price, but I was wondering if I wait a month or two if the price will go down?
We need to get flights from IND (Indianapolis) to KOA (Kona) on July 8, 2018, returning July 16, 2018. Right now Delta is coming up at $1,100 per person (2 adults, 2 paying children). Is this a good price or should I hold off on booking? Overall duration (among shortest) and having only 1 stop is important for us.
Thank you so much for some insight. My fear is that holding off will cause the flights we’re interested in to fill up. 7:30 a.m. from IND to SFO. On Return, 8:00 p.m. KOA to DEN. It’s just such a gamble.
My family, 3 adults and 1 child, are going to Maui from Denver on Sunday, November 18, and heading back to Denver on Friday, November 23. Right now prices are around $1100 a flight. Do you expect those prices to go down, or is that a usual price due to Thanksgiving?
Not sure who Donna is but we’ll try to help. Yes that is expensive, but it’s the Thanksgiving dates that are causing it. It is not unusual. Not sure it would go down if you wait. Doubtful.
Are you aware of any changes ornewflights coming to PHX? HAL and AA seem to be the only direct and their prices seem to be in lockstep with each other. Mahalo.
We believe their will be more flights in not distant future. Perhaps HA and SW. Should be an improving environment and we’ve already seen that recently.
Family of 4 flying to LIH from SLC Aug 14 and returning Aug 24. Would like to use Alaska companion fare and some miles. I’m seeing some decent prices; should I book now, or wait?
Hello! We are a large family (30) traveling from the Midwest (Chicago and Minneapolis) over the Christmas holidays of 2018 and while not all dates are out yet we have been eyeballing the airfare and are scared. We fly over to the BI usually every year so are used to airfares in the $1,000 range (give or take $150) but seeing at the moment airfares around $2400 (ORD to KON on United and American).Yikes. Do airlines inflate their costs initially and we need to give it some time to come down? Kayak and others don’t have the dates even loaded yet so maybe we are jumping the gun and worrying to soon. Any advice you can offer would be appreciated. Thanks!
As we mention frequently, 10 or more traveling together should contact group sales desk of all potential airlines for your trip. As for $2,400, not sure what you’re referring to exactly. Fares are around $1,200 in economy and starting over $2,000 in business/first. Those are not unusual for the holidays and aren’t as you say inflated. Those dates including air, accommodations and car should be obtained ASAP.
Thank you for this site as I have read several threads and gained some great insight.
We are a couple coming from LAX to OGG Aug.2 thru Aug.12 for a wedding. From all indications in your previous comments, it seems that we should wait to see if the pricing drops.
Any change on your suggestion to wait? Our dates seem to be at the very end of peak season so im not tsure if we would make the sales cutoff. Thoughts?
Yes it’s a hard to predict scenario. Best hope is in $500’s, but unknown as to whether that might materialize if you wait. Dates are on cusp of high/low seasons. What would we do? Wait. What should you do? Not sure – depends on your comfort with not knowing. On positive side, towards end of high season availability is better.
Our family of 6 will be flying out of PHX (Phoenix) to KOA (Kona) on 9/15/18 (Sat) and returning on 9/22/18 (Sat). We have some flexibility to adjust those dates for better airfare. The best rate I find is $750 on American. Is this a good rate worth taking or should I wait for other specials that may come as we get closer to departure? My best case scenario would be if SWA started by then but I wanted to have some other options incase that doesn’t happen. Thank you very much for your help and for your great website.
All the best! Mahalo
Thank you! We don’t expect SWA by then. Fares should come down if you wait. Target price under $550. You may need to wait until late spring/early summer.
My family of three is looking to travel from Seattle to Lihue for the last half of June, approximately the 13th to the 25th, however we have flexible dates. Over the past few days we’ve noticed the prices start to increase a bit, even though we are five months out.
Should we buy now, or is waiting to buy on an upcoming Tuesday worth it? I keep reading that Tuesdays are cheaper.
You didn’t say if you were planning on a certain airline. Prices vary from about $600 with cheaper fares being with stops and longer duration.
What we can also say is that your dates are definitely high season and typically airfare for high season is best bought as far out as possible. There could be new routes that would favorably impact competition and pricing, but there’s nothing that we know about. Tuesday off-peak sales would likely have no beneficial impact for your dates.
Hi,we are a family of 3, me, my wife and our 5 year old.We are flying out Feb end, from Indiana to Honolulu and returning back to Indiana from Maui after 10 days vacation in HI. If I add both one way flights for all 3 of us,I paid $2100. Which means $700 round trip per person for Feb end to March second week, total 10 days trip.My question is, I did check various combination and various website before booking this, did I pay more than normal (keeping in mind that I am flying out from Indiana) ? I wish i could have come across this thread before to get some helpful tips, but I still want to know now for my knowledge, that I did not pay for costly tickets.Your input will help me getting some idea for future trips or to advise someone in family who is looking in to a trip to HI later this year. Thanks
You didn’t provide all details. Is Airport IND? Assuming so, then how long a duration is your flights. Prices start in high $500’s mid-week with a long duration (stopover) and go to mid $700’s with shortest 11 hour duration each way.
Aloha. Your valuable advice would be most welcome again. Current prices to Honolulu from SF are $530 return for August (22-29). I was wondering when the ‘Summer Sales’ normally are for US airlines and if you think this is likely to drop much?
Flying from SFO to OGG July 19th for a 7 night stay, then to Oahu for four nights before returning to SFO on the 30th. According to “Hopper”, the first leg of our flight “should” drop as low as $253 and the return to SFO to $251. Do you feel that’s a realistic cost for the flights?
$639 RT. That’s a good price for your dates. Could improve, and we’ll give it a 30% chance, but it is impossible to know if that will happen. Suggest buying now.
Hello! Our family is hoping to fly from Las Vegas to Honolulu July 19-July 23. Currently, it looks like prices are low $800’s flying Hawaiian Airlines. Could you please recommend when would be a good time to book flights? Thank you so much!
Sorry to say, now is probably the best time, and that’s also likely the best price. We can’t envision anything that would indicate waiting. Book everything by the way – car and accommodations right away. As we’ve said this is going to be a busy summer here in Hawaii.
Hi
We are thinking of taking a family trip from may 2-may – may7 from Las Vegas to Honolulu ive seen them so far 500-700 should I wait a bit longer? Well the prices go a bit lower?
Hello looking for flights from brisbane au to Honolulu around Sept 4 or 5 or 6 till 14 or 15 sept, do you think there will be an aussie sale? Have seen in the past for $650 return. Thanks
Hi, I am planning on traveling from Reno to Honolulu October 7th to October 13th, right now flights about 745.00 each ticket. Do you think that flights will get substantially cheaper or should I book now? thank you so much, Susan
HI
I am planning to go to Maui – “OGG- Kahului Airport” arriving on the 19th of august and departing on the 26th. 2 adults 1 teen and one infant in lap. from the NYC area or Philly if that would make the prices better. I see the cost going up over the last two weeks but I read above to be patient and wait for the late summer sales. should I buy now or wait?
.
Hi there,
My husband and I are planning a 25th anniversary trip to Oahu and Kauai in late July/early August. We will be flying out of the DFW area so we have two options on airports. So far, we haven’t seen any great deals for our area. We’re wondering if we should buy now or wait to see if prices go down.
Thanks,
Erin
To clarify, right now Kayak is recommending to buy now. But prices seem pretty standard. Also, any advice on inter-Island flights would be appreciated. Thanks for a great, informative website!
Answering inter-island part separately here. Should buy inter-island for summer as soon as long haul flights are booked. Best choices of dates and seats fill up very quickly. Don’t wait for a deal on inter-island.
You can’t expect to get “great deals” for peak summer, as post indicates. Better deals for 2nd half of August. For your dates, probably low $900’s. Something better could pop up between now and then, but not likely. So buying now or waiting depends on your flexibility/commitment to trip.
Hi
Love this website. I’ve been trying to work out what to do for months and got so much info in a few days here. Thank you Beat of Hawaii. I’m from England and we have a 3 week trip booked from Aug 9 to Aug 30 flying in and out of Oakland. I’d like to book a suprise 7 night trip to Oahu (as it seems like we’d need more time to do multiple islands) around Aug 13. I’m just not sure about timing/discounting for flights (and hotels) in the US so would like to ask if I would be better off booking now or waiting? Are they likely to come down much?
Thanks for any extra info. Fingers crossed I can afford to do this as it would likely be once in a lifetime as we are a family of 6. Aloha 🙂
Thank you. Suggest putting the Hawaii part in the middle end part of your August trip. Not near Labor Day but ending just before. Like 15th through 22nd for example. Prices will be lower. Yes, it is best to wait since it’s months too early for typical late summer sales. They will happen, for sure, so just be patient. Also consider one of the other Bay Area airports as a possibility – it may or may not impact pricing. And lastly, checking on your choice of Oahu. Would you like a largely city experience (including great history and Pearl Harbor), or would you like a more rural experience, or something in between? Have you checked out this post: https://beatofhawaii.com/which-is-the-best-hawaii-island-to-visit/.
Thank you, I’ll wait a bit longer and try to sign up to all the airlines so I’m notified when there is a sale.
I did look at that link. I’d love to do 2 islands but really want to see Pearl Harbor and also the ranch trip to see Jurassic Park and other movie locations on Oahu. If I could stretch to 8 nights then maybe it would be worth to do 5 on another island and 3 on Oahu? Really want to see the beauty of Hawaii and not just the city side that you do not get in or near England 🙂
Hi. Four of us are flying to Maui June 3-9. We were hoping SWA would be up and running but it doesn’t look like it. We can fly out of PHX (closest airport) Las Vegas, or LAX. Right now prices around $900. Should we wait to book? Thanks for any advice you can give us.
June 3 could see better pricing outbound, but June 9 will be problematic as it is a Saturday approaching mid-June. If you wait you might see better pricing. Something perhaps in low to mid $700’s. Hard to predict.
Heading to Honolulu from anywhere west coast where we can get a flight cheap enough from 7/31-8/10. Do you think prices will get any cheaper in a month or two? Which west coast city would you focus on? Hanks!

Thank you for your response! Will take your advice immediately.
Very much looking forward to our visit and also just want to thank you for your very helpful and informative website! Mahalo!

Hi Robin.
As of right now, $755 with good connection on United. Price won’t drop much if at all between now and then. Suggest buying.

Hi Terry.
It probably won’t go down for your dates. We see $1,000 on the nonstop as of right now. That’s a very fair price.
Aloha.

I’m looking for best prices for flights from Edmonton(YEG) to Honolulu. Dates traveling are July 14 – 28

Hi Scott.
$667 on Air Canada with quick connection. Doubt that will get better.

Hello,
There are two of us flying from Seattle to Maui the last two weeks of Oct.
Hi Wayne.
SW won’t be impacting your choice, but other competition probably will. Suggest waiting as it is quite early to be booking for low season fall travel. Perhaps late spring.
Aloha.
Aloha,
Could you please tell me when would be the best time to buy tickets from Toronto via LAX or SFO to Honolulu. We are planning a trip for October 30 to November 15.
Mahalo!
Hi Leo.
If you are planning a true stopover that may change when to buy. Otherwise, currently $440 one-stop on United with short duration. Excellent price – would buy now if applicable. Otherwise wait until fall airfare sales which is late spring to mid summer.
Aloha.
Hi Jason.
Prices for your dates will not get better – availability pricing will probably only get worse. It isn’t a time for bargains obviously. Would buy all of those now at prices indicated. They are in expected range.
Aloha.
HI, We are planning on going to Maui from Cleveland, Ohio on Nov.2 and returning on Nov. 10. Right now I the best prices I see are around $800.00. My daughter and her family already bought tickets at that price, but I was wondering if I wait a month or two if the price will go down?
Thanks for your time.
Lorrie
Hi Lorrie.
Because of your Friday/Saturday travel days, it probably won’t get cheaper by much if at all.
Aloha.
Hi Lindsi.
Best deal right now is $880 with a short duration on American. That’s a great price. Would jump on that if it works for you.
Aloha
Hi Donna,
Thanks in advance for answering my question.
My family, 3 adults and 1 child, are going to Maui from Denver on Sunday, November 18, and heading back to Denver on Friday, November 23. Right now prices are around $1100 a flight. Do you expect those prices to go down, or is that a usual price due to Thanksgiving?
Thanks,
Andy
Hi Andy.
Not sure who Donna is but we’ll try to help. Yes that is expensive, but it’s the Thanksgiving dates that are causing it. It is not unusual. Not sure it would go down if you wait. Doubtful.
Aloha.
Are you aware of any changes ornewflights coming to PHX? HAL and AA seem to be the only direct and their prices seem to be in lockstep with each other. Mahalo.
Hi Sean.
We believe their will be more flights in not distant future. Perhaps HA and SW. Should be an improving environment and we’ve already seen that recently.
Aloha.
Thanks!
Hi Polly.
Aloha.
Hi,
Thank you for this site as I have read several threads and gained some great insight.
Thoughts?
Hi Monique.
Aloha
Aloha,
Our family of 6 will be flying out of PHX (Phoenix) to KOA (Kona) on 9/15/18 (Sat) and returning on 9/22/18 (Sat).
Mahalo
Hi James.
Thank you! We don’t expect SWA by then. Fares should come down if you wait. Target price under $550. You may need to wait until late spring/early summer.
Aloha.
Hi there!
Thank you so much!
Caitlin
Hi Caitlin.
Aloha.
Thanks
Hi Karen.
You didn’t provide all details. Is Airport IND? Assuming so, then how long a duration is your flights. Prices start in high $500’s mid-week with a long duration (stopover) and go to mid $700’s with shortest 11 hour duration each way.
Aloha.
Aloha. Your valuable advice would be most welcome again. Current prices to Honolulu from SF are $530 return for August (22-29). I was wondering when the ‘Summer Sales’ normally are for US airlines and if you think this is likely to drop much?
Hi Colin.
It could be anytime, but most likely is late spring.
Aloha.
Thank you
Hi Karin.
$639 RT. That’s a good price for your dates. Could improve, and we’ll give it a 30% chance, but it is impossible to know if that will happen. Suggest buying now.
Aloha.
Hello! Our family is hoping to fly from Las Vegas to Honolulu July 19-July 23. Currently, it looks like prices are low $800’s flying Hawaiian Airlines. Could you please recommend when would be a good time to book flights? Thank you so much!
Hi Tracy.
Sorry to say, now is probably the best time, and that’s also likely the best price. We can’t envision anything that would indicate waiting. Book everything by the way – car and accommodations right away. As we’ve said this is going to be a busy summer here in Hawaii.
Aloha.
Thanks
Hi Deborah.
We do not regularly follow the market between Hawaii and Australia.
Aloha.
Hi, I am planning on traveling from Reno to Honolulu October 7th to October 13th, right now flights about 745.00 each ticket. Do you think that flights will get substantially cheaper or should I book now? thank you so much, Susan
Hi Susan.
Sunday to Saturday could price in mid $500’s unless something changes. Suggest waiting – probably a few months. There’s no rush.
Aloha.
Hi Erin.
Answering inter-island part separately here. Should buy inter-island for summer as soon as long haul flights are booked. Best choices of dates and seats fill up very quickly. Don’t wait for a deal on inter-island.
Aloha.
Hi Erin.
You can’t expect to get “great deals” for peak summer, as post indicates. Better deals for 2nd half of August. For your dates, probably low $900’s. Something better could pop up between now and then, but not likely. So buying now or waiting depends on your flexibility/commitment to trip.
Aloha.
Thanks!
Aloha 🙂
Hi Colin.
Aloha.
Donna
Hi Donna.
June 3 could see better pricing outbound, but June 9 will be problematic as it is a Saturday approaching mid-June. If you wait you might see better pricing. Something perhaps in low to mid $700’s. Hard to predict.
Aloha.
