  1. Hello,

My family is coming to Maui 10/6/18 through 10/14/18. We are looking to travel from Phoenix (PHX) to Maui (OGG). I’m seeing a one stop flight on American Airlines for $741 round trip. Is this a good rate? Also should I wait to book in hopes of finding a better rate and if so when would the best time to book be?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

    Cheers,

    Dan

    1. Hi Dan.

Suggest waiting until late spring to early summer or so. Should be able to do better, although the Saturday departure could be problematic. Target price about $600.

      Aloha.

  2. Hi There- My family and I (4 people) are looking to travel to Kauai from 6/17 to 7/6 from Bay Area to Lihue. The dates are not flexible, except that we may be able to fly in a day earlier. We have the option of traveling down to LAX to fly also, if that will bring down the ticket cost. Tickets prices we are finding now are in the $750 range. If we wait a bit will they drop? Can buy now, but considering waiting until April/May to purchase if we can get a better deal?

Thank you so much for your help in advance.

    Kara

    1. Hi Kara,

Very high demand period. LA is about $90 cheaper. Otherwise, not optimistic about price going down and availability is more likely to be an issue in waiting. Your one day date variability will not help.

      Aloha.

  3. Looking at flying from Detroit to Kauai for Sept 1 departure and return sept. 10 2018 to Detroit. When do you think the best time to book an airline ticket would be?
    Brad

  4. Hello, My family and I would like to come to your beautiful islands in January 2019, for my 50th:) We would like a suggestion as to when the cheapest time to book would be. Also if you could recommend a reasonably priced accommodation. Thank You.

Sorry I forgot to say that we would be travelling from Prince George, B.C. but I’m not sure to where. There are so many beautiful places, I would appreciate some advice.

    1. Hi Deanna.

Late summer to fall is probably going to be the best window for booking.

For where to visit and what to do, we suggest the Hawaii Revealed series of digital and print guidebooks, which are the most highly regarded.

      Aloha.

  5. Aloha,

First, thank you for all the great information on your site. We are flying from Kelowna, BC to Lihue on August 19/18 to 29/18. We have accommodation already booked and car booked. As this is the later summer, should we wait to book airfare or book now? The current price is coming in at $2,360 for two people via Alaska and Delta flying through Seattle.

    Thank you in advance.

    Heather

  6. Hi, we are traveling from MKE or can do ORD on January 16 to HNL, and then returning from OGG on the 25th. Our dates are firm as we’re going with a group. Will Southwest be flying by then? Otherwise, best airline to fly and should we book now or wait?

  7. Hi,
When do you think is the best time for me to purchase flights from Philadelphia to HNL staring Aug. 21-30th 2018?. So far the prices has been dropping, therefore I am not sure whetherto wait or just book it. Please help.

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Sarin.

Target price is low $600’s to about $800 for your dates. $800 is currently available with fastest connection. Keep in mind that the lower the price goes the higher the worse the connections. Over the next few months there should be more of the lower fares, with the previously mentioned caveat.

      Aloha.

  8. Hello,
Do you anticipate any sales from SFO/OAK to HNL for the end of May?
    Thank you in advance,
    Nelson

  9. Hi I’m traveling from Baltimore to Honolulu June 28-july 7…right now flights are about 1100 round trip..should I wait or buy now? Thanks!

    1. Hi Brittany.

That is one of highest demand periods. You can wait and see if you’re okay with either paying more or not coming at all. Otherwise, that period should generally be bought 11 months in advance, so buy now.

Alternatively, changing dates will reduce cost. 6/25-7/5 on United will cost $833-$887 depending on duration.

      Aloha.

  10. I and my fam 5 of us want to go to Hawaii May 17 till the 28 to visit my daughter and my grandchildren I check tickets everyday and it’s never below the 600 mark for round trip when is the best time to buy and do u think the tickets will go down in price

  11. Hello,

I am so happy that I came across this site!

We are looking to fly from Denver to Honolulu August 10 or 11th through August 16th for a surprise too for our kids. I look at flights daily and there seems to be a fluctuation in prices and I’m not sure of when I should book. There is a flight today as low as $196 one way (I have to buy one way at a time because there are 5 of us and that’s better for my budget)
, but I really want to land in the day time so that we can see the island upon arrival (we’ve never been). However, the daytime flights are significantly higher. Is it silly to wait for flights at a preferred time of day to go down? I don’t want to risk missing deals all together over a time preference, but I don’t want to book now and then the cost of the flight with my preferred time drops within the next few weeks. Please help?! Thank you in advance!

    1. Hi Dianna.

For 8/10-16 the cheapest we find at this time is $566 RT with one stop. Goes up from there. That’s an okay price, but not great. Your dates may come down some since you’re at the tail end of peak summer travel. But equally likely is that they may not. Two weeks later, the fare for the same flights on Delta is $333 RT. That’s a great price if it can work for you.

      Aloha.

  12. Aloha,

Looking to travel to Maui, OGG, from Oakland,CA from 09/22 to 09/27/2018. The dates are not flexible. Alaska has two tickets for 1,027. Should we wait for a price drop 90 days out or go ahead and book now?

    1. Hawaiian has a flight for $498 each. Saturday is an higher cost day to fly. Hawaiian has often deals from oakland, san jose and san francisco area. If you can find a ticket under $400 buy it immediately:) but anything between $400 – $500 is average and worth booking.

  13. Hi, I am planning to travel to Waikiki in May and booked an accommodation by airbnb.
I booked at studio condo and I am wondering if we still have to pay a resort fee for airbnb ?
I was not aware of these charges until I booked and searched about Hawaii.

    thank you

    1. Hi Sanae.

We have no idea what you agreed to. You need to look at your reservation and if need be contact the host and/or Airbnb.

      Aloha.

  14. Hello!

What month is the best time to travel to Hawaii, weather and price wise?

    Thanks in advance!

    1. Hi Karen.

That’s what the post you are commenting on is all about. So not sure how else to answer. Spring and fall. After spring break or after Labor Day.

      Aloha.

  15. Hello!

I have a trip from July 30 to August 3rd (mon-fri) from Vancouver, BC (YVR) to Maui (OGG) and have been monitoring prices for the last month. From what I’ve seen, it’s consistently going up, with only slight dips in prices for the flight + hotel package. (It’s spiked up since Mar 1st aswell)

My question is when is the best time to book package? I’m still 5 full months away. However, expedia does say Maui is 95% booked for my Dates.

When should i book this trip? (Dates are locked in unfortunately)

    A) I’ve read, is it always best to book on a Tuesday afternoon? (farecompare)

    B) Is it best to book 4 months to 21 days b4 departure? (farecompare)

    C) is it best to book 6 weeks to 7 weeks b4 departure? (travelandleisure.com)

When would be cheapest to book?

    Thank you
    Jason

    1. Hi Jason.

Best to book for your dates right away as those are definitely in high season. Doubtful they will go down and likely they will go up with availability being an issue.

Peak season inflexible travel is best bought when availability occurrs (330 days), unless something else occurs, such as new flights on your route being announced.

      Aloha.

  16. Hi! I’ve no time frame, really. Looking for best time to go from Washington, DC. I have an ownership in DVC sonwould be staying at Aulani on Oahu. I truly don’t care when, as long as it doesn’t rain every day and I can spend most of my time enjoying the scenery. Hawaii is a long time dream so I’m flexible if affordable. Any input/advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you in advance,
    Marti

    1. Hi Marti.

After spring break and September/October would be our distinct suggestions per your request. It’s also a great time for lower airfares, even from DC.

Expect to pay about $700 RT with a good connection. That’s available now for April/May and should be in a few months or so for fall.

      Aloha.

  17. Aloha – Please let me know if there are any flights offered from Atlanta to Maui? I ant to fly my sister here to Maui for a visit late April. Many thanks, Jeqanie

  18. Hi There,
Would appreciate your opinion on booking a flight now for 7-28-2018 return 8-4
Las Vegas TO KONA… Should I wait to see if Southwest will be flying?
There will 6 of us, of course, SAVINGS would be so welcomed..
    Thank you

    1. Hi Melanie.

No SW will not be flying. And there is no reason to think prices will go down at all by waiting.

      Aloha.

  19. Aloha!

We would like to travel to Oahu in April, 2019. Since Easter falls on April 21, when is the best time to go? We would be travelling from Portland, OR.

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Wendy.

Probably safest to avoid all of April, since at this point we don’t know how spring break is going to fall. It isn’t really related to Easter any longer.

      Aloha.

      1. Thank you! Would you suggest March, or May? We would like to avoid rain, extreme temperatures, crowds and high flight prices!

  20. Hello there!
Would like your opinion on booking a flight now for November travel from Sacramento to Maui. United is 373 RT for my dates, wondering if holding off or booking now is a better option?
    Thank you so much.

    1. Hi Stacy.

That’s a great price. Suggest you get it and nothing in our crystal ball indicates otherwise.

      Aloha.

  21. Hello. I’m planning to go to Honolulu last week of December from Chicago. Non-stop tickets are going pretty quickly and are expensive. Do you think new non-stop flights will open up or prices will drop later in the year? I’m not sure if I should wait or buy ticket now before it gets even more expensive or less tickets available.

    1. Hi Oliwia.

We have no information indicating additional flights to Chicago in any specific time frame. Thus would not suggest waiting. It will happen at some point in time we suspect.

      Aloha.

  22. We are flying from Calgary AB Dec 1,2018 to march 31,2019 to the big island. Which airline and is best to fly into Hilo or Kona and when is the best time to book airfare?
Also will need to rent a small car for 4 months. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Please and thank you.

    1. Hi Charles.

It might work best to book two one ways, since most airfares won’t span four months. Would check all carriers flying from Calgary. Outbound call be bought from late spring through early fall as sales appear for low season. Return may or may not be problematic due to spring break. We don’t really know how those high season dates are going to fall yet. If you end up being in spring break then buy the return at 300+ days in advance. If not, then wait until about 90 days before.

      Aloha.

  23. Aloha,
We want to travel to Oahu from LAX on May 31st to June 8th. Prices for the month of Feb. have been roughly around $750 (Hawaiian). Do you think prices will go down? Or should i just book? Thanks.

    Erwin

    1. Hi Erwin.

Your dates are and may remain a problem price-wise. Can you leave and return one day earlier instead? If so then $599 on Hawaiian.

      Aloha.

  24. Hi there,

I was actually looking at end of August in 2019 on flying to Maui from SFO. Do you think the prices for the flights will be about the same next year?

  25. Hello,
Thank you for your time. I am looking to book May 24 thru June 8 , 2018. I know my departure date is just before memorial weekend. The weeks before this date are in the $750 range currently.
From Washington DC to HNL. Tickets are $900-$1200. This has been the price for the past month. Should I wait a little longer?
    Thank you so much!
    Christy

    1. Hi Christy.

Nonstop is about $1,100 and one-stop only slightly less unless very long duration. If you fly on 23rd and return on 8th, then $776 one-stop with reasonable duration. Not too hopeful about improvement possibilities for your dates.

      Aloha.

  26. Aloha,

We are looking to go to Honolulu from LAX on August 11th and then come back to LAX on August 24th from Maui. How long should I wait to see good rates for airline tickets. I have read that a person should wait 4 months to 21 days in advance for a good deal. May I ask what you suggest?

    Mahalo,

    Mindy

    1. Hi Mindy.

Saturday August 11 will be a problem in terms of pricing. Currently about $550. May improve a little later in spring, but may not. If you can move from Saturday to Sunday you’ll save $50 currently and perhaps more by waiting.

      Aloha.

  27. Looking to fly to Kauai from Denver or West Coast (fly SWA to wherever Hawaiian has sale). Dates are January 5-12, 2019.

Should I wait for a while or purchase now? Current flights are 850+ from Denver and 650+ from West Coast airports.

    Thanks,

    John

    1. Hi John.

Yes wait, whether SWA is flying or not. Target prices from low to mid $500’s. Price from Denver will depend on whether or not nonstop of course, and duration. A lot easier to just take one carrier straight through, what with inter-lining, security, possibility of missed connections, etc.

      Aloha.

  28. Hi,

I’m planning on going to Maui from Colorado in mid September to early October for a week. Cheapest prices I have found are in the mid $800s. Should I wait to buy? When is the best time to buy?

    Thank you.

    1. Hi Gladys.

Target price for your dates is somewhere in $500’s, depending on routing and duration. Suggest waiting for that a few months.

      Aloha.

  29. Hi. I am trying to figure out when is the best time to purchase airfare for our family vacation in June? Sacramento to Kona. 6/20-6/27. Thank You!

    1. Hi Julie.

Probably best to purchase right away for that peak summer date. Car and accommodations as well. It is going to be a busy summer here.

      Aloha.

  30. Greetings,
We are planning a trip to both Oahu and the Big Island in late September-early October 2018, and can be flexible about travel days. From LAX, would it be cheaper to fly to/from HNL and then book a separate round trip HNL-KOA, or can we find reasonable prices for a LAX-HNL-KOA-LAX itinerary?
If it’s too soon to buy, how long should we wait? What might we expect to find in the way of fares?
    Thanks!

    1. Hi Roberta.

Yes too early to book. Perhaps a few months from now. Target price in $400’s plus inter-island. Don’t fly LAX/HNL round trip, but instead use your direct itinerary. That will save you a lot of time.

      Aloha.

  31. Hello,
Been waiting on an airfare sale for family of five RT tickets from LAX to Maui from June 25-July 8. Do you think we’ll see any sales during that travel timeframe in the $500-600 price range RT? Thank you

    1. Hi Elsie.

Expecting an airfare sale for your dates isn’t realistic. Target price is about $700 for your dates, which is as it is priced currently. Availability of air, accommodations and car will become issues if you wait.

      Aloha.

  32. Aloha,

I am just starting to look at SAN/HNL round trip ticket prices for a trip I am planning from 7/10/18 to 7/16/18. What are prices looking like?

P.S. – I am visiting my family in Waimanalo.

    Mahalo!

    1. Hi Lee.

For nonstop $730 on your dates. Via one-stop in LA, you might save up to $100. Priced as expected and not sure it will improve.

      Aloha.

    1. Hi Joe.

Our best suggestions on timing for your fall trip are already in the post you are commenting on. Avoid holidays and you should be good to go. Let us know if anything else.

      Aloha.

  33. My family of 5 will be traveling from Ohio to Oahu from mid July through mid August. Right now the cheapest ticket I have found is 860 with taxes and fees. Should I buy now or is a cheaper rate coming soon?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Jess.

Not likely to get better for your dates by waiting. Prices drop starting mid-August.

      Aloha.

  34. Hi-
First of all, THANK YOU for your work on this site. We’ve been following you for several years and several trips to Maui. This year we are going SEA-OGG non-stop HAL Mon. Oct 29-Thur. Nov 15. Currently around $590. When do you think we should book?
    Thanks again

    1. Hi Jim.

Thank you. Suggest waiting with target price in $400’s. Gut feeling is it will be be very competitive on that route this fall. Even on nonstop.

      Aloha.

  35. My family is flying to Lihue from Southern California, 12/27/18 to 1/6/18. Could you please tell me when would be the best time to by the plane tickets? Should I wait for Southwest? Thank you in advance.

    1. Hi Tami.

They could well be here by then, but no one knows of course. If not it will remain very expensive. If they are here, it could be somewhat more competitive. Availability for flights, car and accommodations could be very tight. Hard to predict unfortunately.

      Aloha.

  36. Hello,

I am going to HNL from SJC 12/20 to 12/27. The price on Hawaiian air for non stop is about $900 round trip but up to $1600+ for days around. Should I book my flight now or hold for Southwest?

    Thanks.

    1. Hi Alex.

No one knows if SWA will be here by then, so can’t really suggest waiting for the unknown. Otherwise best to buy now and price is as expected.

      Aloha.

  37. I am going to Honolulu from NYC 8/31 to 9/9. The prices on United and Hawaiian air for non stop first class have risen recently. Hawaiian Air is up to $5108 a person round-trip. We are thinking of going on United non stop to Honolulu and then taking a flight back that stops in either SFO or LAX. The flights with 1 stop are now about $2270.

Should I buy now or will this get cheaper?

    1. Hi Denise.

As of just checking, we are seeing all airlines clustered between $1,900 and $2,500 round trip. Doubtful that will improve.

      Aloha.

  38. I am flying to Honolulu from Los Angeles 12/27/2018 – 1/4/2019. When should I book my flight for cheap pricing? Should I hold out for Southwest or book with Delta?

  39. Aloha!

I am bringing my family to Maui from Dec 26th thru Dec 31st. Flying from Phoenix to Maui and back. I found a flight on American for $1072. Do you think we can find a better deal, given we are traveling over the holidays? I know SWA is soon to announce their Hawaii flights, but not sure what the rates will be over the holidays and if they will fly to Maui. Thoughts? Thank you!

    George

    1. Hi George.

Concur about your concerns. Even with more players including SWA, airlines can probably keep peak fares unchanged. Suggest buying. Don’t forget to book accommodations and car right away too.

      Aloha.
