  1. Thanks so much for providing such great information! Family of 4 looking to go from LAX to KONA Thursday 3/23/17 to Monday 4/3/17. Found $630 R/T and non-stop. Seems like a reasonable rate for peak spring break but I would appreciate your opinion on that price.
    Thanks!
    Gerry

    1. Hi Gerry,

Thank you. $616 at the moment on United nonstop. Concur that’s a good price for your spring break dates.

      Aloha.

    1. Hi Aubrey.

That is what the post is all about – including cheapest time to buy and cheapest time to travel. Fall and spring travel.

      Aloha.

  2. Hi,
My family of 5 (3 children under 9) would like to travel to Hawaii possibly in May or June 2017. What is going to be the cheapest flight for us and when should I look to start booking airfare from Minneapolis, MN.

  3. Love this website!! Thank you for your hard work.

I am looking to go to Kauai (LIH), on 9/18/16 to 9/24/16 from LAX. Prices have been fluctuating over the past month. Currently, it is $806 RT but I saw it at $659 RT back in July. Should I book now or perhaps wait a little more? Kayak says to wait.

    1. Hi Peter.

Thank you. Suggest waiting with one caveat. Your dates are weekends and those are most often excluded from better pricing. $764 on your exact dates or $626 if you can return two days later.

      Aloha.

  4. We are looking for a nonstop from Houston to Honolulu on Feb 20th and leaving on the 27th 2017 for our honeymoon. I’ve been looking at United first class, since it’s our honeymoon and it’s about $1700/person round trip. When do you feel I should try booking, so that I’ll be able to get a better deal?

    Aloha,

    Anthony

    1. Hi Anthony.

The first class fare doesn’t vary much (perhaps up to $100) so you’re probably good to go ahead and book it now.

      Aloha.

  5. Thanks so much for your website, I love your email updates too!
Looking to book pdx-hnl Nov 4-12, maybe flexible with dates. I have an app that has been telling me to wait (hopper) and then kayak tells me to buy…I feel like prices should go down a bit, but maybe that’s because I’ve purchased flights to Hawaii in the past in the high 300s- lower 400s. Do I need to embrace the $500+ as “the new normal”? I see east coast prices $1000+ so I know it could be worse for us, but I dont know what price I should feel good about. Mahalo, Lisa

    1. Hi Lisa,

Thank you! As you can see here, last week Hawaiian Air had that route priced at $426. It will probably return again. Your Saturday flight however won’t get that price. You’ll almost definitely need to fly mid-week.

      Hang in there.

      Aloha.

      1. Thanks for the encouragement! I missed the low Hawaiian fare, and it looks like your link refers to PHX(Phoenix) rather than PDX(Portland)to HNL…

  6. Hello! Thank you for this very helpful site! My husband and I are wanting to plan a trip to Hawaii in February 2017 and stay at one of the hotels on Waikiki beach. Is this a good time concerning weather, availability and prices to visit Hawaii? Also, what would be a good target price and airline if we are flying out of SLC? Any information is appreciated!

    Thank you so much!!
    Patti

    1. Hi Patti,

First, target price is just under $500 with one stop and maybe $75 more nonstop. Delta and Alaska are the best bets.

February is winter, and so storms are a definite possibility. Days will be in the high 70’s to low 80’s, and nights in the 60’s. It should be a good time in terms of pricing of accommodations. Hope that helps.

      Aloha.

  7. I am traveling from LAS to Kona on 12/12/16 and flying back on 12/18/16. Do you think prices will drop for that travel period? Thanks for any advise and your service

    1. Hi Jeff

Doesn’t look like to come down by much if at all on that route for your dates. If you do 12/13-12/19, you’d save $50 as you would if you do 2-stops.

      Aloha.

  8. Hi! Thank you for your informative emails! We’re leaving for Honolulu, Hawaii (from SLC) until March 23, 2017, and I’m anxious to get the best flight for our family of 5. Can you please help me? I checked a few months ago and the flights were running about $686 round trip right now at the cheapest (going and coming back on weekdays). Now they’re about $789 at the cheapest. Did I miss the best time to buy? Do you think they’ll get any better? How much would you guess I could save if we drove to the west coast? Oh thank you for your help! You guys are great!

    1. Hi Anne,

Thank you. You’re traveling in spring break which is why prices are so high. Nonstop is running about $900. Mixed airlines (use an OTA to check those) yields prices starting at $700. If you want to drive to the west coast, there are still fares of $428 from SJC on Hawaiian. Hope that helps.

      Aloha.

  9. Hello we are a family of 5, 2 adults, 1 12yr old and 2 9yr olds, time of year doesn’t matter for us, when would be the cheapest time to fly out? We want to go for about a week 7nights 8days, leaving from SMF, thank you.

    1. Hi Daniel.

Cheapest time is fall and spring, per dates listed in the post. For example Maui is about $460 through both periods. Might come down by a bit if you wait, but might not. Fair price. Otherwise you’re stuck driving to OAK or SJC.

      Aloha.
