  1. This may seem like a silly question, but please help me get clarification on this. I am getting close to my departure day and have to set up an appointment time for my Covid19 test. What does “72 hours before departure” mean exactly? For instance, if My plane departs Thursday at 10 am, and I take the test on Monday at 12 noon, is that considered within that 72 hr window?

    1. Hi Annie.

Yes, that’s correct. A test taken anytime at 10 am or after on Monday will qualify.

      Aloha.

  2. Thanks so much for the continued updates! We’re scheduled to leave On a cruise from San Francisco on 12/23 to Hawaii, with 5 sea days before arriving in Hilo. next day Maui, then Kauai, then Oahu. How does this one day in each port itinerary work with the testing requirements? Are the ports open? Mahalo!

    1. Hi Sally.

Great questions and yet another whole area to traverse. We’re working on it and we’ll update you soon.

      Aloha.

  3. This is a great post as it helps to fill in some of the missing gaps from the state’s FAQs. Thank you. But I have one more to add to the list: What is the process for opting into the second test after 3 days of arrival on Kauai ? This is a great idea and one that I wish weren’t voluntary. I suppose this is still being worked out as I write this. Thank you Beat of Hawaii.

    1. Hi AW.

Thanks. We are looking for that information about lost arrival testing. So far nothing. We’ll update as we learn more.

      Aloha.

  4. One question I have, which I thought was answered, but then with the latest news conference I am now not so sure is…

If we fly to Honolulu and then to Kona immediately, we are not considered inter-island travel, correct? And our test can be 72 hours prior to the departure for the flight to Honolulu. When we land in Kona we hope the expectation won’t be that the test is within 72 hours of the departure of the flight from Honolulu to Kona. And the results from 72 hours before our flight departure from LAX to Honolulu will be sufficient.

    Mahalo!

    1. Hi Kyle.

That is definitely how we read it. Also, you should expect a second, free test on arrival at Kona.

      Aloha.

  5. FYI re testing: VAULT was a 24 hour turn around on results! I took test yesterday at 2 pm PST, UPS’d it yesterday at 5 pm, and i just received results at 3:30 pm today (next day!).

  6. I think the 24 hours for the questionnaire and uploading of your negative test means that you can’t do it before 24 hours previous to your flight. Once you have registered at Safef Travels and have entered your travel info, it won’t let you access the travel questionnaire until 24 hours before your flight.

  8. I have to comment on two things…one is the Beat of Hawaii saying “we assume” when talking about things that are not clear…NEVER ASSUME ANYTHING! If you don’t know, say so! Assuming doesn’t resolve or answer anything and could cost you a bundle of money and much wasted time.

    The second is this comment

You do realize that these are Americans coming to visit right? The worst tourists in the world? I’ve been many places and the Americans never take more than a minute to pick out of any crowd, too loud, too obnoxious, too entitled and condescending to the locals, and embarrassing far too often. Having an expectation that Americans will follow all your Covid rules is about as sensible as letting 500 kindergarteners loose in a museum with an expectation that they will all read and follow directions and not touch anything! Good luck with that…

    1. I am an American tourist and I do not fit any of Ron G’s adjectives. I think that is a very unfair statement. I follow all the rules, I love Hawaii, respect the aina. and respect the locals.

      1. Hi! Thanks for your good work guys – a real abstract puzzle to solve. My husband and I have been traveling nonstop since 2003 (worldglobetrotters.com) Yes there are a few loud, ugly Americans out here. As there are a few loud ugly citizens of every country. It is our job to change that image by example. Once safety measures are in place for Hawaiian residents, let’s remember to welcome visitors with Aloha. Reality check says it’s time to face the fear and get the economy going again. Thanks for listening.

    2. You just stereotyped an entire country. Instead of spouting hate and generalizing there are better ways to make your point. We are from the continental US and plan to get tested, wear masks and most importantly will respect others. The world would be a better place if we all try to take a glass half full approach while of course acknowledging the reality of the difficult situation we all are in.

      Mahalo.

  9. For Canadians: Fly to SFO and do the test courtesy of United Airlines before departure. Cost is $250 per test. That seems to be the only choice at this time.
