  1. We are planning a trip with 4 adults for mid January 2019.
We are flying from Cincinnati CVGor Dayton DAY. Are we better off flying on United or Delta all the way to Hawaii or going to a place on the West Coast to fly on Hawaiian Airlines? What is the best way to fly to the Big Island and home from Oahu? Do you fly to Honolulu and take a round trip to Kona? Your guidance is greatly appreciated. I really love all the advice you give people.
    Thank you!

    1. Hi Susan.

Suggest you’d probably be happier to just take one carrier straight through, what with issues associated with inter-lining, security, possibility of missed connections, etc. Should not be a problem to build an open jaw as you said flying into one island and out of another. That will also save you time and expense compared with RT from Honolulu.

      Aloha.

  2. travel from MCI to Maui 0ct. 19 thru nov.3rd will southwest be flying there then or should i book now thru another airline…or should i wait for prices to maybe drop??? any info would be helpful…

    Thanks Jim…

    1. Hi Jim.

Until further announcement is made, we just won’t know about SW’s arrival date. Our gut says their best hope is for the end of year holidays at this point.

      Aloha.

  3. Hi, I’ve been watching flights from Oakland to Kona in early/mid-August and see an Alaska flight for $597 roundtrip. Hawaiian’s flights have been jumping around from high $600s to over $1000 and then back down a little. Should I keep watching or is $597 a good price to fly mid-week in August? My dates are somewhat flexible except that we have to be back by August 19 for school. Thanks!
    –eowyn

    1. Hi Eowyn.

By mid-August fares on that route should be in mid-$400’s. Earlier than that may not go down. Since you’re saying you need to return by 8/19, return part may drop but not ongoing. Gut feeling is to wait on this for several months, if your nerves can take it. 🙂

      Aloha.

  4. Looking at travelling to Maui for 2 weeks from Toronto, Canada over the December holidays (Dec 24 to Jan 7). Found a United Airlines flight for $777 Canadian per person ,return, (with layover in Chicago). All other airlines show fares of $1000 Canadian per person or more.
I’m trying to decide whether to jump on the United price or hold out to see if prices will drop for other airlines.
It’s so far out and I’m not sure the best course of action.
    Any advise is greatly appreciated!
    Thank you.

    1. I’d go for it! I bought a ticket from Honolulu to NYC in October for travel in December and it was over $950 American, round trip!

  5. Hi,
I’m planning to travel from Los Angeles to Kauai on June 16-June 23. Right now the prices are over $800 round trip. Do you anticipate better rates in the coming months? Any info is appreciated. Thank you!!

    1. Hi Nicole.

We’re seeing closer to $900. Not likely to improve. Availability can also be an issue for 2nd half of June. Other than changing to mid-week, hard to suggest course of action other than to buy at that price.

      Aloha.

  6. Hi,
I clicked on the link provided in the add for a $163 fare from Phx to Maui. No such fare was able to be found. Am I looking in the wrong place?

    Thanks

    1. Hi John.

Phoenix to Maui is still available for $335 RT. Mostly on Delta and United, depending on date. Currently only available for departures through May 16. The fares change up to 5x daily.

      Aloha.

      Aloha.

  7. Hello: I used the link in your newsletter for Hawaiian Airlines to get your posted rate of $198 to $212 for Oakland to Maui on 10/13/18 – 10/20/18. However, the rate I’m given is $295 each way. Please let me know how to get the rate you posted?

    1. Hi Terry.

As of today, $198 goes through May, then about $217 in fall. Your dates about $10 higher than that. So play with your dates or pay a bit more, up to you. If you weren’t aware, airlines change prices up to 5 times each weekday. Thus while fares we post are valid at time of posting, they may not be a few hours later.

      Aloha.

  8. Hi!
I just came across your site! Thank you for the information. We are traveling from Oakland or San Francisco in the busy time (leave on or about 7/29/18 and return on or about 8/5/2018). I saw some of the flights listed as good through December, but I am not getting close to the rate. Sorry if I missed something, but can you enlighten me? Thank you!

    1. Hi Carl.

If you’re talking about the SFO-OGG airfare for summer, it is still available today. It has moved from AA to UA, and we so indicated in post. All fares are available when posted, for dates indicated.

      Aloha.

  9. I will be traveling to Honolulu June 11th – 25th from Phoenix, Arizona. I’ve been watching the flights and Hawaiian Air just dropped from $815 to $767. LAX just dropped $667. Will the fares go down in the next couple of months before going back up? $767 is still a bit high.

    1. Hi Liane.

Phoenix is seeing some movement recently, as you’ve undoubtedly noticed. Thus a drop even in summer is a remote possibility. Say should new flights get introduced. Not entirely likely, however, so hard to say what might serve you best.

      Aloha.

  10. This is the second time on your site where I have searched for the deals and they are double or sometimes triple the price you quoted, what gives. I planned to go from SFO to maui in June and it comes up $802 round trip not 198 one way.

  11. Aloha and thanks for the constant updates! I’ve noticed a really good fare (south of $500 per person) from San Diego to HNL in early June but it includes a stop at LAX. Trying to book via LAX directly is much more expensive. I’m wondering if this is typical. It seems a bit cumbersome to drive to San Diego only to get to Hawaii via LAX. Thanks!

    1. Hi Jeff.

Yes that is typical. We’ve done it ourselves and probably wouldn’t do so again. It was on AA and we even had to change terminals at LAX. Ugg. Sometimes want to shoot selves for things we do to try to save money. 🙂

      Aloha.

  12. I appreciate Beat of Hawaii publishing these fares, but travelers must be careful because the airlines are very misleading. Some of them advertise their Basic Economy rates. These rates are cheaper but you don’t get your seat until you get to the airport. Those are usually middle seats. You cannot use the overhead storage on the plane just the area under the seat in front of you. If, you’re flying with no luggage, don’t mind a middle seat with less legroom on a long flight, I guess it’s a deal.

I am traveling to Hawaii for three weeks going to Maui, Kauai and then Honolulu for three weeks starting June 11th. During late summer, I read the posts about the price wars and Southwest potentially starting flights to Hawaii in 2018. I have a companion pass with Southwest so I thought maybe I could get a good deal. I waited until mid September and decided to purchase my ticktets in September and I’m glad I did. I paid total $663 per person for all three islands from San Diego. The prices have not only increased but the times have worsened for the cheaper fares. The cheaper fares now have much longer layover times so th travel times are longer. You can lose a day in travel and that’s on the west coast.

I’m just sharing this because I know a lot of people focus on their fares to Hawaii, but they don’t always factor in these other variables.

  13. Greetings from Dallas! We would love to hear about anything from Texas. We rarely see anything for less than $750-$1000 because of the AA domination. Looking forward to Southwest flights. Thanks for all the great info.

    1. Hi Randall.

We’re definitely thinking of Texas. New longer range single-aisle planes will bring Texas cities within reach of Hawaii. It’s just a matter of when.

      Aloha.

  14. I love reading the updates and tips. I have hard dates for our Honolulu trip. Every time I see the low fares, I jump on trying GTO find them but have zero success. 6/7-6/13 Bay Area to HNL. I just don’t see what you’re seeing.

  15. Hi, I am curious regarding when these sales first came up, were the airfare prices you listed roundtrip or the cost for each way (to & from)? You got my attention regarding the $200 range Phoenix airfares where I live – I have not seen $200 range roundtrip airfares from Phoenix for probably at least five years but often it was closer to $300-400 roundtrip, which is still a good deal. Thank you for clarifying.
    Carrie Ann

  16. HI Guys!
I’m so glad I found your site.. Love it..

So I thought I sent you a note yesterday, but I think I forgot to send it..We are leaving Cleveland, Ohio to go to Maui on Nov.2, 2018 and coming back on Nov. 10. Our daughter owns a condo in Maui and said that now is the time to buy the tickets. They paid over $800 for theirs. I am wondering if we wait a few months or buy now…

Thanks so much for all of your help…

    Lorrie

    1. Hi Lorrie.

You did ask on 2/3, and we did reply as follows:

“Because of your Friday/Saturday travel days, it probably won’t get cheaper by much if at all.”

      Aloha.

  17. Hello. I am looking to fly from PDX to HNL in June, departing either June 18 or 19 and returning June 25 or 26. Prices right now seem to be about $700 for decent flights. Not interested in a 3 stop milk run!

Do you think that there will be another sale?
Any impact from when(if) SWA announces flights?

    Thanks!

  18. hello, looking to book from seattle to either maui (or kauai) and wondering if the new hawaiian fleets may impact pricing. Ideal times would be first week in april but that is looking pretty pricey – or first or first week in august but wondering if you suggest trying to go late april or early may in terms of flight prices?

  19. Hello,
I left a comment but I cant find it anymore. Sorry!
    Love your website.
We are planning to travel big Island on December 20 for 10 days. When do you think we can buy a plane ticket?
    Thank you in advance

    Karen

    1. Hi Karen.

No problem. Last time you didn’t say what dates in December you were traveling. We said if it was first two weeks then to wait. But given your peak season holiday plans, you should buy when first available which is in a couple of weeks.

      Aloha.

  20. First, thank you for this wonderful site! Very helpful.
however, I am a bit confused. for example the flights to Kauai you mentioned at $186 until December: I was on the United site and could not find these prices. I started looking for flights in June, whichis before December…
How must I understand this: until December means flights in December booking now?
    Thanks for the clarification guys
    Nadja

    1. Hi Nadja.

Still available in December to book on their website. Last departure is December 11 from San Diego. Connecting in SF.

      Aloha.

  21. Thanks for the information but I don’t see any flights one way for 208.00 especially from california the cheapest one way in 289 and that is within the next couple of months otherwise one way from sacramento is no lower than 400 each way I sure SWA would open their schedule to hawaii these rates are crazy

  22. I found some Alaska Air round trips between HNL and SAN for $356 ($178 each way) when I was just looking up some March travel. I guess they’re matching Hawaiian!

  23. Hi! I just found your site! What a treasure !

We are looking for fares from either SFO, San Jose or Oakland, non-stop, to Kauai for October of this year. Am I starting to look too early? Seems if I wait, then the seats we want for a party of 9, might not be available…

    Thanks!

    Judy

    1. Hi Judy.

Thank you! Yes it is too early for those routes. Target price is about $400 – or if new routes are announced, might even be less. You may have to wait several more months. Availability should not be an issue for October low-season travel.

      Aloha.

      1. Thanks ! I guess I’m wary of waiting too long, because, if we want a better seat selection, I am guessing that the better seat choices will all be taken by the time the lower fares come around?

        1. Hi Judy.

Yes there are always trade-offs including what which you mentioned. Might still work out if you’re very flexible but hard to say. Also prompt online check-in based upgrades can often rectify bad seat issues.

          Aloha.

  24. Hello and thank you for the wonderful information you provide. I’m currently trying to find deals from TPA to HNL 4/14/18-4/21/18 for some family members and am wondering if you have any suggestions. I’m currently seeing about $900/person round trip on United or American. Hawaiian seems to be sold out. Have they missed the deals? Should they wait longer? Is it better to buy tickets on a specific day? Thank you for any suggestions you may have!

    1. Hi Cindy.

$845 on Delta with good connection. Flying on Saturday is hurting pricing. About $100 less if you fly mid-week.

There are no deals from Tampa to Hawaii per se. Pricing is as expected. Doubtful it will improve by waiting.

      Aloha.

      1. Hello. Thank you so much. I’ll let them know about the Delta pricing. They, unfortunately, can’t fly out on another day, so it’ll be best for them to buy now, then. Thank you, again!

  25. Mahalo BOH for all you do to keep us up to date on the most economical fares! My family, like Tracy the reader above, are flying Phoenix to Maui 6/23/18 through 7/07/18. We too have flexibility of a couple days. However, I can’t find $800/$900 flights anywhere as Tracy from Phoenix did. Also, I’ve looked at flying from San Francisco or Los Angeles using United and their fare finder and I can’t find any of the low fare prices. Do you have any suggestions for me?

I’ve been following BOH since you began in 2008. When we’re traveling to Hawaii I follow BOH everyday in search of lower fares. Thank you so much for all you do!

    1. Hi TJ.

Thank you. Tracy’s dates were different, leaving 7/13. You have picked a pair of some of the most expensive dates possible in the year. The airlines have it nailed so that it probably won’t matter where you fly from. You can come out of SJC for just over $800 or from SAN for about $50 more. But getting there – oh my. Doubtful that anything will improve either, and more likely that availability will be disappearing. Suggest booking something now.

      Aloha.

  26. Looking for flight from Detroit to Maui (family of 5) in June 2018. Prices seem to be holding steady @$1200-$1300. Do you foresee any drop in price in the future or would it be best to purchase now?

  27. I’m a huge fan of you! Thank you so much for all your helpful tips. I was hoping you could give me some advice.
I see a one way flight from Maui to Portland, ME for $323 on Thursday, May 3. I’d rather fly home on Friday and that price is $343. Is this the lowest it’ll be? These
    Flights are United.
    Thank you so much!

    1. Hi Heidi.

Thank you. Kind of looks like that. Their best fares in that market are consistently just Monday through Thursdays. Suggest grabbing that for just $20 extra. Not bad, especially when you consider that Saturday is an additional $50.

      Aloha

  28. Thank you, thank you!!! Your information is SO valuable and appreciated. I’m a loyal follower, though new to Hawaii vacations.

I would love to think Southwest will be flying by then, but alas, I’m getting worried. We are looking for Phoenix to Maui flights with some flexibility to leave 7/12 vs. 7/13 for example. Is the $465 range one way a price we should grab now or do you foresee opportunities at a lower price approaching?

    Any insight is appreciated! Mahalo!

    1. Hi Tracy.

Thank you. No Southwest is not likely to fly until later in the year at the earliest. No one exactly when until SW announces.

For either 7/12 or 7/13 departure, looks like about $859 RT on the non-stop, depending on your return date. Doesn’t seem that will improve by waiting.

      Aloha.

  29. If I need to attend a wedding in Maui the beginning of July 2018, when would be the best time to purchase airline tickets? I realize this is high summer season but, of course, my dates aren’t flexible with the wedding. Just wondering if I should buy now at close to $1000 round trip from Austin, TX to Maui or wait. Your advice? Should they fall in price or just keep going up? Sincerely hoping there will be a price drop soon! Thanks.

    1. Hi Anne.

Probably best to bite the bullet and buy now for early July. Availability will be an issue. Bet sure to get whatever else you need right away too. As in accommodations and car rental. Summer is shaping up to be a very busy one.

      Aloha.

  30. Hi–I was looking at fares from LAX to Lihue in the middle of May and found a fare of $367–which is really low. Now we are thinking of changing plans and going around May 29-June 10 instead. Fares are about $610 for those dates. Do you think we should wait to see if the fares in June go down or should we buy tickets now? Thanks so much for your help!

    1. Hi Debbie.

May 29 should yield good prices if you wait another few weeks or so. But June 10 will be problematic because that is high season and a weekend. If you could return a weekday of prior week then probably wait. For June 10, however, hard to predict what might happen, and thus perhaps better to buy. Hard call.

      Aloha.

        1. Hi Debbie.

Most welcome. Concur it will also be better for crowding, car rental, activities, etc. Tourism here has been pretty much off the map. So whatever you can do to come at less popular times, the better.

          Aloha.

  31. Hi, Thank You for all the great information on your site and in your newsletters! My husband and I are flying to Maui from pdx on Aug 14th for one week. I’ve been watching prices and many sites say only 3 or 4 seats left at the cheapest price $380 rt. Is this true? Are only 3-4 seats left on the plane? I’ve been waiting for Southwest to make their announcement but I’m wondering if I should just book tickets now. Please advise. Thanks sooo Much!

    1. Hi Julie.

We wouldn’t personally be troubled by those messages, as they may or may not be marketing driven. Quite doubtful that Southwest will 1) be flying here by then and 2) be flying from PDX at any time.

It’s too early to buy for your travel dates for the most part. Probably will work better about 3 months out. There are no fares for $380 on your exact dates as of right now. Cheapest is $500. Also might tend to avoid the $377 fare that may show up for your dates on United, as it will require a stop.

      Aloha.

  32. Hello and thank you for all the wonderful tips and advice!! Currently, Google flights search is showing me an amazing price of 443 RT DEN/HNL 3/21-4/5 but I can’t seem to get that price no matter how I try. (Travel agent, various search sites or even directly with Delta/Hawaiian). Do you have the magic wand/secret? Thank you in advance for any assistance.

    1. Hi Stephanie.

We confirm what you found. That fare, which should be on Delta if it exists, doesn’t really work. Some type of error. It could work later, or it might just disappear entirely.

      Aloha.

      1. Thank you! At least I know I’m not crazy even if the price was too good to be true! Looking up the Delta flight #’s provided by Google shows LAX to SEA to probably an unfortunate (for me) glitch. I really appreciate the quick feedback and hopefully *fingers crossed* I can find a real deal here soon!
