Aloha. My wife and I are traveling to Hawaii for our first time end of May 2019. We are using LAX as our departure airport (inbound from Florida under separate already booked reservations). Our plan is to book multi-city airline reservations from LAX to fly into Oahu (HNL) on 5/24/19 for 2 nights with the return flight out of Kauai (LIH) back to LAX on 6/1/19. The Inter-island flight will be booked separately.
Can you please recommend (1) the best time to purchase our multi-city tickets from LAX (2) recommendation on how far in advance we should book the inter-island flight from HNL to LIH and (3) best fare $ costs to expect for the LAX to Hawaii multi-city booking reservations?
Mahalo in advance!
Hi Dave.
Best to wait until after SWA announces flights on that route. Should happen for your time frame. Were that not to happen, best spring airfares should occur around first of year. Inter-island should be booked immediately after booking trans-Pacific. Perhaps budget for $150 each way and be pleasantly surprised if it is any cheaper.
Aloha.
Hi!
What a great recourse BOH is – thanks! Watching late June 2019 flights from LAX to KOA. Found a HA round trip for $722-752 range. 1-stop going, NS returning. Doesn’t feel like a bad price but wondering whether BOH thinks SWA impact may drive prices down or if I should purchase now at that price????
Matthew
Hi Matt.
Thank you! Good question. Of course end of June is 2nd most expensive time to fly to Hawaii. But even then there will be some benefit from SWA. We’d optimistically be looking at a target price in high $500’s.
Aloha.
Looking for a good non-stop airfare from LAX to Maui in mid-September of 2019? When should I start looking at low airfares? Thanks in advance for your response.
Hi Elaine.
Wait until SWA gets going. You should be in for very good airfares for next fall. No rush to buy for now. Expect to pay from $100 to $150 each way.
Aloha.
I forgot to say Thanks!!
I love this website!! Our family of 6 are taking our first trip to Hawaii Spring 2019. We are planning for Las Vegas-KOA 3/28 to 4/8, with a flight into Honolulu early 4/8 to see the island before continuing on that night to Las Vegas. (looking at Hawaiian Air who flies through HNL, so it’s about $650 with the extra flight from KOA to HNL since the layover isn’t long enough for us.) Hawaiian has had many sales recently into early March so we planned to wait for sales for late Mar/April. However, I saw in a comment on this site that we are coming during Spring Break in Hawaii. Will inventory be low on these flights such that we should buy now or can we safely wait to buy a little longer?
Hi Kristi.
Thank you! Spring break isn’t a time when you can expect to find deals to Hawaii. Your dates are solidly within spring break. Inventory can also be a problem, although with your mid-week travel dates, that is decidedly less likely. Given the Las Vegas to Hawaii market and its limited competition, we’re of mind that it might not improve and to book sooner than later.
Southwest effect could help – that is also a possibility, albeit unknown at this time.
Sorry to not be able to say more definitely what will happen.
Aloha.
Hello, I am flying out of Oakland, Ca and landing in Honolulu on the 4th of March, and currently shopping for return flights on the 9th of March (Saturday). Unfortunately fares went up from 220 to 300 in the last few days, and I need 5 tickets so thats a large difference (400). Do you believe that flights will drop below 300 again anytime soon?
Because there’s no competition from other carriers for the inter island routes.
Please help me find a flight from LAX/San Diego or any LA airport to HNL on Dec 22 to Dec 28. I am confused by the following on your site and cant seem to find this price, please help, thank you
Peter W
Honolulu Deals
↘ San Diego $225 $142 November until March
Los Angeles $224 $144 October until March
↘ Long Beach $284 $198 October until March
Hi Peter.
Holiday periods such as Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Years are not included. Sale prices on both LAX and SAN routes are available until December 12 and then again starting January 7. Your dates are running over $900. Not sure if they will improve or not. Also possibility they will sell out.
Aloha.
Why do inter-island fairs continue to be the most expensive flights per mile than any other airfare in the country, if not the world?
Are the fares you quote one way fares or RT?
Hi, can you please advise how to obtain the unadvertised fares for this sale? It says “not published on the airline’s website” but the link takes you to — the airline’s website.
The airline pricing for Phoenix (PHX) to Kauai (LIH)) is $800+ when the price advertised (above) is:
Kauai Deals
Phoenix $279 January until March
I searched January 2-6 just to check pricing.
Thanks for your reply!
Hi Sherry.
Outbound availability starts January 7, then is pretty wide open. Use the airline’s monthly view to find fares.
Aloha.
Aloha I am looking for a flight from Dallas TX (DFW) to Maui (OGG). Please advise what is the best time to purchase a ticket and when will they be cheaper from Dallas? I wanted to go this fall, or Jan of 2019. Please help me find a cheaper ticket and Mahalo.
Hi Lourae.
Last week of November and first week of December has fares in mid $500’s with good connection on Alaska.
Aloha.
Please, advise when it would be a good time to book our flight from LAX to Kona for Saturday June 15, 2019 one way? Was hoping Southwest would be flying and the fares would reduce. There would be six adults flying.
Thank you,
Karen H
Hi Karen.
We don’t know when SW might start flying from LA – it will not be at the beginning. Very much peak travel day – Saturday in summer. Hard to predict. Currently just under $400. Might go down by up to $100 or so if you wait but that is anything but guaranteed. So what to do depends on your threshold for pain of not knowing by waiting.
Aloha.
Planning trip from PHX to Lihue between Jan 1 and April29 2019. What is your best price thot? Two seniors. Thx.
Hi Vergie.
We’ve had some good prices this fall, so suspect that will resume in your time period, other than end of march to mid April (spring break). Target price $400. We’ll keep fingers crossed with you. Let us know how it goes.
Aloha.
There are so many times that the red highlighted links don’t take you to where they are supposed to. Like right now again for the 123.00 airfares by Hawaiian Air.
I am looking for the cheapest flights from SLC to Honolulu for 2 adults from March 5-12. Not willing to fly through the night and want to keep total travel time under 11 hours. Best flights I am seeing right now are $523.80 per person. Our son in Hawaii keeps telling us to wait for prices to come down to closer to $400. Do you think we should take a chance and wait or just book now? Thanks!
Hi Julie.
Not likely that you’ll see both good connection/no overnight and price in $400’s. Suggest buying if you can find in $500’s. Best flights we’re seeing are on Delta, nonstop outbound and one stop in LA return. Meets your criteria and price is about $700.
Aloha.
Do you think that one way lax-koa will drop at all around oct 12th back below $200? Thank you!
Hi Theron.
Not sure if you mean back to the $250 RT fares in September. That is possible but not likely. More likely is mid $300’s, which is a very good price nonetheless. 10/12 is a Friday and those are often somewhat more – something to keep in mind. We should see some better October fares coming out soon.
Aloha.
Hello!
We are planning on visiting Kauai Jan 16-21, 2019. Currently there is s nonstop flight from Oak to LIH for $377. I was waiting for the Southwest triggered fare wars but I’m starting to think those might happen further down the road. Do you think we will see better deals as it gets closer or should we go ahead and book?
Thanks so much!!
P.s I appreciate and look forward to your newsletter daily 😊
Hi Melanie.
Thank you. It could really cut either way. We certainly expect to have them flying by then, and every indication is that they will have that route covered. But no one knows for sure. On the other hand, $377 is a good price. Overall, it seems more likely that prices will go down from $377 rather than up, should you choose to wait. For your mid-week travel you should be good in terms of availability.
Aloha.
Aloha,
Traveling roundtrip to ITO Feb 22, 2019 to March 2, 2019 from BWI. Avoiding ORD, Denver for layover flights. Flying via United/Hawaiian airlines. Any suggestions on the best cities for connecting flights, and how soon / best time should the flights be booked?
Mahalo,
Dee
Hi Dee.
Over $800 RT any way you do it. ITO doesn’t really get deals, and BWI to Hawaii is limited in its deals (there are some but not a lot). You can fly via LAX and avoid those airports you mentioned.
Not sure anything is going to improve much, especially with Friday/Saturday travel dates.
Aloha.
Hi! I have a cruise booked from Honolulu starting December 1st and plan to arrive a couple of days early to explore the island as it will be my first time in Hawaii. I have Southwest’s companion pass and have been holding out hope that Southwest will be flying in time. However, as I will be flying from Tulsa, Oklahoma, any advice would be appreciated. I follow all of your updated sales fares but not sure if my best bet would be to fly from Tulsa to the west coast and then on to Honolulu or just keep hoping for a more direct approach. What do you feel would be the most economical? Please and thanks for any and all advice. – Sara
Hi Sara.
About $700 RT on Delta, with very good connection. Fair price. Not sure waiting for SWA right at the beginning will be a good thing to do.
Aloha!
We are planning a trip from DC to Honolulu on March 27-April 4th. I see some flights for $813. Is that a good price for that time period? Or should we wait? Thank you!
Hi Cindy.
Well coincidentally today we have a sale from DC. So you see how good fares can be. However, your dates are at spring break and that is always significantly more money. Low $800’s is fair for mid-week at holiday period. Not sure it will improve.
Moreover consider the nonstop at $870 RT. For hardly any more, you’ll save 5+ hours in each direction. Suggest buying that.
Aloha.
Hi! THANK YOU so much for your reply. I ended up booking a flight on September 10th. American Airlines had a sale out of the blue. Anyway, I paid $655 for round trip DCA to HNL. It does have one layover. I thought that was a good price during spring break. We putchased 3 tickets so we saved quite a bit. Thanks again…
Cindy
Hi Cindy.
Thanks for your update and glad that it worked out for you!
Best Aloha.
I must be doing something wrong. As soon as I receive the Beat of Hawaii email–I immediately click on the route I want within the dates mentioned and never see anything close to the prices mentioned. The price I see available is between $230 and $237-Seattle to Hilo. Cheapest I can find is $674. I have tried one way and round trip and no luck. Am I missing something?
Hi, we’re traveling from Oak or San Jose to Honolulu mid November. I found flights for about $376. Should I wait or get these flights. Just wondering if prices will down…your input is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Hi Karen.
That is too hard to call. Could go either way. Might have Southwest by then but then again no one knows. Bird in hand theory suggests buying.
Aloha.
Hello,
We have a family of 5 traveling from Sacramento, Oakland or SF to Maui (OGG) the month of July for 9 days. What kind of prices could we expect per person? Any suggestions on the best travel dates during this month?
Much thanks,
Jennifer N
Hi Jennifer.
Could be “some” benefit from Southwest flying then, so do wait. We’d anticipate $400’s to $500’s for July. Later in July may be better than early July.
Aloha.
Mahalo for your hard work!
You think these price wars may continue into the fall? We are really crammed in our schedule so maybe a mid Oct trip to Kauai (from LAX), if we can get it would be a nice get away.
Also, has Lane contributed to any issues on Kauai? I always wonder if that influences the fare wars. Our Ohana is looking forward to it!!
Hi Jon.
Thank you. Yes there’s a very good chance of the September fares being extended into October. No guarantee, but that is our sense.
Lane was just very wet on Kauai. Doubtful that is influencing prices however.
Aloha.
Aloha,
I need some advice for two adults traveling from Wisconsin to Kauai Jan 13 thru Jan 23, 2019. We are a bit flexible by a day or two either way. We will be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary and are looking for flights and a car. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Barb
Hi Barb.
Fares are from high $500’s to $800, depending on number of stops and duration. Might improve, but not necessarily. Could be some impact when SWA starts, but again, not for sure.
For car rentals, suggest looking at this post: https://beatofhawaii.com/ten-ways-to-save-money-on-hawaii-car-rentals/.
Aloha.
Mahalo for your amazing blog, I have actually found my last (super cheap) air dare deal s through your website and the alerts I had signed up for! Love it!
I’m planning on moving to Maui in January, therefore looking for a one-way flight from Chicago to Maui (both airports work) any time between January 2-12. I’ve been waiting on Chicago deals, since that’s the kind of deal I found last time via Beat of Hawaii (with delta Airlines, stop in Seattle). I’m also hoping southwest airlines announcing their flights will help with this, but not sure since they’re flying from the west coast. Question is :Should I keep waiting for deals for Chicago specifically or book as soon as possible? I’d be extremely thankful for your input!
Thank you in advance, and Mahalo for everything you do!
Hi Bea.
Thanks very much. SWA is sure a possibility, albeit unknown until announced. Most reasonable at the moment in terms of both price and duration/convenience is still Delta via Seattle for $371. Might improve if you wait and doubtful of it getting worse. Suggest target of about $300. Let us know how it goes.
Aloha.
Thanks for all you do! I come on here daily 🙂 We are looking into traveling the week of Feb 16-24 to Honolulu. We can travel out of many different airports from Southern California LAX, San Diego, Long Beach, Palm Springs. Just wanted to get your thoughts on what a good deal (price range) would be, we are ready to buy tickets but trying to make sure we get a good deal. Appreciate all your work!
Thanks,
Ronnie
Hi Ronnie.
Suggest waiting until after SWA announces since San Diego will be part of their equation. Target is under $300 round trip.
Aloha.
Hi- Family of 3 flying roundtrip SEA to OGG 11/6-11/15/18 (somewhat flexible on return date). Flying with kids so we need non-stop direct flights with no red-eyes. Prices were down to $535 each on Hawaiian Air. Please let me know if you think there’s any chance we can get an even better price if we wait? Thanks for any help 🙂
Hi Amber.
The 15th is a bit problematic as it sits right before the beginning of Thanksgiving week. Hawaiian is not very competitive with Alaska/Delta out of SEA at the moment and that also has the possibility to change for the better.
Aloha.
My husband and I have a condo in Maui reserved Jan 29 to Feb 5 (Tues-Tues). We generally fly direct from PDX on Alaska, taking advantage of a companion pass and free checked bags because we have their credit card. Right now Alaska airfare (with companion pass!) is pricier than paying full price on Hawaiian. We are open to adding a day or so either side of our original dates to get the best fare during that timeframe. Would you book now, or wait a bit to see if things change?

Hi! The link to the sale doesn’t seem to be working for me in any browser, can you help?
I’d like to get married on January 24, 2019 in Kauai. We live in Nebraska. I heard labor day weekend is a good time to try and get tickets. What kind of prices should I anticipate to pay?
Just checking if the San Diego fare to Maui for $28 is a typo! I’m sure that would sell out in seconds.
Thanks John. Fixed.
Aloha.
Traveling to OGG June 1, 2019 to June 8, 2019 from Utah. Can fly out of Las Vegas or Salt Lake or (Sacramento, LAX or San Diego if cheap enough). What kind of fare can I expect and when would be the best time to book that fare? Thank you for your help!
Hi Mike.
We aren’t necessarily anticipating much change in the SLC market. But SMF, LAX and SAN will have a lot of deals due to Southwest driven competition. Also, you’re flying on Saturday and that will be a price problem no matter where you are traveling from.
$771 right now from SLC. Might come down by $100 or so if you want until about 90 days in advance. On the other markets, we’ll all have to wait and watch.
Aloha.
Aloha!
I need to book flights for first week of April, PDX or SEA to HNL. We prefer Alaska Airlines, but i have been tracking the last few months, and they seem to be consistently higher (by a lot!) than Hawaiian and other airlines. Is this typical? Or am I just looking too early?
Mahalo!
Hi Wendy.
First week of April is technically spring break so might not improve, especially for weekends. Only deals are the United ones with stops at $376RT. Might work out later, but again, not likely for weekends.
Aloha.
Hi there, I am trying to get a ticket for my son who “changed his mind” and wants to join us on our Maui trip Nov 8-13. We got tix for $357, last week they were $436, and now they are $532! Yikes! Do you think there is a chance they may go down again? This is SJC-OGG. Mahalo (and I know you do not have a crystal ball (= )
Hi Lauraine.
Yes it is very likely you’ll see prices for your dates go back to under $400 for your low season, mid-week dates. Be patient.
Aloha.
Hi! Looking for flights for next June/July. I am coming from the east coast. Currently one way tickets are around $460. That seems pretty good, but I am so far out (11 months). Do I keep waiting for our return dates to come out, or is that a good price to get the one way now? Thanks!
Hi Saundra.
Without specific dates and routes, it isn’t possible for us to suggestion with much precision. $900 RT from east coast in summer is a good price though.
Aloha.
Thanks for your reply! I am looking to fly out on June 17th and return late July- around July 21st or 22nd. We can fly from any Washington DC airport, but could also fly from JFK if we take an inexpensive flight to there. We are even considering Phoenix as my sister lives there, so if it’s a low enough fare, we could fly to her place the day before as well. I’d love any tips or advice if you think it’s a good idea to wait or book.
Hi Saundra.
You did not say where you are flying to. It probably won’t make much difference if any, in terms of which of the airports mentioned you choose. If you are able to find tickets for $1,000, that’s an excellent price target for your peak summer dates.
Also, you’ll need to wait about a month to be able to purchase, since ticketing is only up to 330 days in advance. It would be a good idea to buy very soon thereafter.
Hope that helps.
Aloha.
hey thanks for all the great updates,
We (3 adults 1 child under 2) are traveling from New Orleans to Kauai in January 5th but heading home from Maui 2 weeks later
Is it best to book 2 one way tickets? or round trip?
What is a realistic price range? Most options have been $700-900 range so far
Thanks in advance for any insights
Hi Tommy.
You should expect to pay about $800 RT plus inter-island. That’s reasonable for your dates and since you want to travel on Saturdays. Fly into one island then out of the other – no round trip.
Aloha.
Hi,
I really appreciate all the tips I read on this page. We will need to purchase 10 tickets from Seattle to Kona for March 22-31 (Friday through Sunday). These dates are not flexible. At this time, the flights are very expensive and lengthy, often overnight. From watching your website, it appears that the best deals appear from 3-5 months ahead of travel times. Please, do you have any advice or warnings for purchasing flight tickets for these travel dates to Kona from Seattle?
Thank you very much,
Susan
Hi Susan.
You are traveling during peak of spring break, on weekends, so finding a deal at any time is not likely. In fact suggest buying now. And you’ll be looking at close to $700 RT. For possible discount of up to 10%, try calling the group travel desks at various airlines. That works if the 10 will be traveling together.
Alternatively, changing by even a day will bring in the possibility of $363 RT, albeit with one or two stops.
Aloha.
