  1. Planning our Honeymoon in Hawaii the second and third weeks of November and would love to be able to see both National Parks (The Big Island and Maui) and then spend some time on Kauai. We’ll be flying out of Detroit.

Do you have any advice on when to look for flights or the most efficient way to get from island to island once we get there?

    1. Hi Jason,

Since Detroit requires connecting flights anyway, you might consider flying into one island and out of the other That way you’ll only require one time consuming and relatively expensive inter-island flight. That is the only way to get between islands and that will be on Hawaiian Airlines (although Mokulele Airlines does have Cessna flights if you’d prefer a more up close and personal type of flight).

The summer should reveal somewhat lower prices for fall travel. Currently $800 (2 stops) to $1,000 (1 stop and shorter time). You could save a couple of hundred or more by waiting.

      Aloha.

  2. I am planning a trip to Hawaii in October. I already have a cruise booked from the 10/1 – 10/8, leaving from Waikiki. I have tons of Southwest points and wanted to use them to get to the best West Coast location for the cheapest RT to Hawaii. I see that Oakland may be the best location for this, and we wanted to spend some days in San Francisco anyway. What are your suggestions?

    1. Hi Tim,

That sounds like a very good plan. Fares from Oakland to Honolulu are already down to $438 on Hawaiian for mid-week in October. If you want to lock that in now that is very reasonable, though it will probably drop by up to $100 if you’d rather wait until perhaps summer.

      Aloha.

  3. Hi!
When should I start waiting some good deals from NY to Kauai?
I’m planning a trip to there in July’16.

    Best,
    K

    1. Hi Kitty,

Prices in July start at about $1,000. That is to be expected for summer travel and no price reductions are likely.

      Aloha.

  4. Planning a first trip to Hawaii!! Looking for advice on best time to buy airfare from EWR/NYC to HI for travel period of 11/24/16-12/9/16… So far there will be 4 ppl & we plan on hitting 3 islands (Big island, Oahu & Maui) & which one we hit 1st, 2nd or 3rd is flexible.

Advice on the usual or anticipated cheapest flight to one of these destinations & our return to EWR/NYC as well as best time to buy inter-island flights would be greatly appreciated!

Also any tips, hints or other notes for our trip would great! Thank you in advance!!

    1. Hi ML,

Airfare is running about $800 on the Hawaiian nonstop to HNL, plus inter-island flights. Might or might come down a little given that you’re flying on Thanksgiving day itself with your return being in low season. Gut feeling is to wait to book until sometime this summer when we start to post fall deals.

      Aloha.

  5. Hi 🙂

It’s really nice of you to take the time to answer everyone’s questions, so here comes another, slightly different one:
I might have to go to Hawaii on personal business but I’m not a US citizen. I would have to fly from Norway or somewhere in Asia (I’m not sure how I’ll do this) – what months are cheapest for international flights to Big Island, and what continents are the best to fly from? I don’t know if there are any big hubs with good deals for Hawaii from Europe and Asia (like Hong Kong and Singapore often has good deals for specific places etc.)

Hope you have some advice 🙂 Thank you so much!!

    Iris

    1. Hi Iris,

We don’t regularly follow deals from Europe or Asia to Hawaii. We do see them and they tend to move around from time to time in terms of best places to fly from. Also contacting a airline consolidator comes to mind (though not a recommendation exactly).

      Aloha.

  6. We are planning to fly from Oakland, CA to Maui, HI on 10/12/16 to 10/18/16. The price for round trip is currently $438 pp. Is this a good fare?

    Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

    1. Hi Juliet,

Yes that is a very good fare – if you want to lock it in. On the other hand if you prefer to wait, that is among the most competitive markets and we’ve had prices up to $100 less. It’s a case of the bird in hand vs. the one in the bush.

      Aloha.

  7. Hi! We are planning a trip from Las Vegas to Kauai 4/3-4/11. Last week I saw prices were around $545 and I didn’t jump on it. They rose to the $700s, and now are at $670. Would you suggest buying now or waiting to see if there is another deal?

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Ariel,

Gut reaction is that they may well drop some if you care to wait. You’re at the tail end of spring break.

      Aloha.

  8. Hello We are planning a trip from Houston to Maui March 12 to 18th ,s it too late to get a good deal. what is an average fare. Whats the best airline too. It seems I’ll have to take different planes.

    1. Hi Kwame,

$1234 to $1264 on American or United. If you could do 14th to 20th or 22nd, it would be $750 – $832 on United. These prices are all with good connections. Spring break dates with expected prices.

      Aloha.

  9. We have accommodations in Kauai May 5-12, 2016 and found airfares with Hawaiian Air traveling from Phoenix for $551. Is that a good fare or could we expect lower prices out of Phoenix?

    What’s your advice?

    Thanks

    1. Hi David,

Because Phoenix isn’t seeing good deals, it seems likely that the price will improve either not at all or by very little if you wait. Suggest buying.

      Aloha.

  10. Me, my wife, brother in law, and his wife are flying to Honolulu June 15-22 from St. Louis, MO. When would be the best time to purchase our tickets? Is there a airline you would recommend over American Airlines?

    Thank you!

      1. Thank you. We are in search for a early flight 5-6am and hope to get out there by 2-3. I have seen several United flights and American Airlines for around $1050 but I was not sure if that is a good enough deal or not.

        1. Hi Doug,

That is the price that’s to be expected for your peak of summer travel dates unfortunately.

          Aloha.
