  1. I’m traveling to Maui dec 14-21st, SMF is closest, but can also fly out of San Jose. Do you think fares will go down at all by then. Looking at $650-$750 right now. They were $500 a couple months ago…wishing I would have bought those then!! Thanks!

    1. Hi Kristy,

Those mid-December dates are not going to be economical and they might or might not go down.

      Aloha.

  2. We are planning a trip to Maui from 12/23/14 – 1/2-15. The fares are $1200 right now. Is it better to wait until August or September to book the flights?

    1. Hi Pat,

Normally we’d say no fares won’t go down. But this year peak season airfares are the same or lower than are traditional. So if you’re set on those dates and coming to Hawaii you may be better off buying now. If you’re willing to take the chance, then keep watching and it could come down several hundred dollars. Let us know how it goes.

      Aloha.

    2. We just booked a time share spot in Kauai from 12/13/14 thru 12/20/2014. When should we book flights? they are jumping around right now in terms of price. What would be a good deal? It will be my wife and 3 kids on the trip.

      1. Hi John,

That is not an economical time to visit. Suggest buying quite soon. A good deal from where?

        Aloha.

    1. Hi Fahmy,

The most likely airlines are Hawaiian and Alaska. You might also try a search tool like Expedia or Kayak. We aren’t sure what fall airfares will look like at this point, but we suspect $500 from major west coast gateways.

      Aloha.

  3. I purchased 4 tickets out of ATL to OGG on April 2nd for $501 person on AA for Sept 2 – Sept 11th. Reading your article, i now know that I got a pretty good deal. I have a few more friends who would like to join us on the trip but the prices have been really high. Do you think they will lower the closer to Sept? Not sure the $501 will show up again but hoping maybe $600 – $650.

    1. Hi Sheri.

Yes you got in on a very good deal. Other readers did as well. We don’t have any indication of what the fall airfares will be, and the airlines are going to hold the line as hard and as long as they can.

      Aloha.

    1. Hi Bianca,

Perhaps Allegiant isn’t flying the route you’re looking for on the dates you would like. The mostly only fly seasonally and then just once or twice a week.

      Aloha.

  4. I am trying to plan a trip for a large group in 2015, for my parents 60th birthdays. We are flexible as far as dates, especially for a cheap price but the hurdles right now are 1. We are a group of 11 adults and 5 kids aged 7 and younger , so any recommendations on where to stay and; 2. We are flying from both east and west coast- not that I expect to have all the same flights but it just adds to the juggling of planning – any suggestions for us?!?

    1. Hi Abby,

For that size group we suggest you contact the group sales department of each of the airlines flying your routes. Please let us know how that turns out.

      Aloha.

  5. I am planning a wedding in Kona for the week of June 27 – July 5 and have been watching the flghts daily and there hasnt been any change in the past several months. We can fly out from PDX or SEA. Should I just bite the bullet and buy the tickets now? They have been hovering around the $900+ range and the seats are filling up. I have the $99 companion fare with Alaska and was going to use that so that would bring it down to about $500-$600 per ticket.

    1. Hi Lisa,

Suggest buying now as those are the peak dates of summer and could even sell out.

      Aloha.

  6. Hi, I am planning a trip from Boston or New York to Maui and Oahu at the week between Dec 23rd to Dec 30th. Now I can find Alaska Airline offer $1200 (BOS to OGG and HNL to BOS) with 1 stop each way. From some forums, people previously got good deals on early fall for the airfare during Christmas week (~$800 to $1000, depart from East coast). Is it too early now to book a flight on Christmas? What will be the good time and good price to book a Christmas trip based on your expectation? Thank you very much.

    1. Hi Joe,

You can’t really draw conclusions from what happened before. We are in an entirely new situation in Hawaii travel. Having said that, $1,200 is probably fair for your dates. If you wait you may see lower airfares on the actual holiday days and the eves (12/24 and 12/25) for example. And there could even be somewhat lower prices for the holidays, although probably not lower by much if at all and no one knows when that could occur. None of it is guaranteed and if you are determined to visit, you may need to just pay the price.

      Aloha.

  7. Good Morning,
I live on the eastcoast (phl) looking for a flight to maui for 11/1-11/8/2014. When should i purchase airfare? Would it be better to flight to the west coast to connect to maui? Thanks for any help you can provide.

    1. Hi Helen,

If you travel on 11/2 instead of on 11/1 the fare is $857 instead of $961. You could wait for the potential of fall airfare sales (which could happen from June on) from either New York or a west coast city like Oakland. But traveling with another city brings in the possibility of missed connections that even travel insurance does not cover. And PHL doesn’t see many Hawaii deals as you probably know.

      Aloha.

  8. Hi,
I’m planning on taking my husband to Honolulu Hawaii for his birthday in August. We would like to leave Friday 8/22- Sunday 8/24 round trip, when would be the time to buy and what would the cost look like?

    1. Hi Bianca,

Are you traveling from Los Angeles? If so you might want to try checking Allegiant as they have fares around your dates for about $400 round trip. Otherwise it will be around $600 round trip on other airlines. It isn’t clear that there will be any sales before then.

      Aloha.
