  1. Hello, I am planning a wedding in Hawaii with travel dates 8/9 to 8/17. I am not sure which island to visit. Deciding from kauai, maui or the big island. I just checked flights to each of these from pdx and maui was the least expensive. Is this pretty typical? I have been to maui before and love it but wanted to explore a new island. Maui was around $150 less per ticket.

    1. Hi Farnaz,

Yes at this time Maui has more flights, seats and competition generally and therefore is blessed with somewhat better pricing.

      Aloha.

  2. Hi there,

I’m looking to travel to Oahu + Kauai on my October 13-21 honeymoon with my fiance. Do you have recommendations on when to book our hotel and airfare?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Jordan,

There are few deals from Chicago. Right now the airfare is about $720 with a stop or $100 more nonstop to Honolulu. Seems about right unfortunately. Those are to Honolulu. Flights to Kauai will add approximately $150 round trip depending on the date and flight. Don’t forget to buy inter-island as soon as possible.

      Aloha.

  3. Flying to Kona from 9/8/14-9/15/14. Got a group quote for $521.68 out of oakland on alaska. Should we book?

    1. Hi Brittany,

Sounds reasonable. And given that a bird in hand is better than one in the bush….

      Aloha.

  4. Hi, I need to know when best time to buy ticket from LasVegas to Hawaii … We not decide which island ..Oahu or Big Island ….we like to go there on November and which months is best time to buy tickets August to September ? Three adult and two children and one infant.
Please give us advice or tip.
    Thanks,
    Jessica

    1. Hi Jessica,

From Las Vegas, you might want to consider Allegiant Air as they generally have the best prices. You need to go to their website to check.

      Aloha.

  5. Aloha! My wife and I will be going to Hawaii for a wedding at the end of March 2015…. when do you think would be the best time for us to buy flights? Is there a trend in cost of flights that I should look out for?

    Thanks,

    Tim

  6. Do you know if there’s a price war going on between United and Usair today? Roundtrip First class tickets on United from TPA to HNL for November 1 were only slightly more than economy. $1300. For the extra comfort and no baggage fees etc it’s a steal.

  7. Aloha,

I visited Kauai last year and fell in love with the islands. I’m wanting to plan a trip to Oahu this September. 2 weeks ago flights were $650 RT from Detroit. But now they are $1000! Should I book now or wait? My travel dates are open from June-Sept. Thanks for any advice!

    1. Hi Josh,

You might try waiting as there would not appear to be much potential for fares to go higher, while there is a lot of opportunity for them to come down again for travel dates starting mid-August.

      Aloha.

  8. We’re planning on going to Maui from LAX in late August before kids start school on Sept 4th. Flexible on dates and length of stay (preferably 7+ nights). So according to your info, should be on/after August 18th. The price has stayed at $617 for some time. It jumped up to $637 last week, then went back to $617. Should we wait for lower price or buy now. Thanks.

    1. Hi Wayne,

It simply isn’t clear what the airlines will do this year. There is wide open availability in August, so the possibility exists for lower fares. On the other hand the airlines are preferring to fly with empty seats rather than to discount prices. No one knows what they will ultimately decide to do.

      Aloha.

  9. Considering traveling Sacramento to Honolulu in February 2015. Fares today on Hawaiian Air are $530 RT.

When is the best time to purchase?

Is there much chance February fares will go much lower?

And, I can purchase 2 tickets for 35,000 miles each or buy one and buy the second with a Hawaiian Air 50% companion fare discount. Given the cost to buy HawaiianMiles, would you purchase tickets with miles or with cash using the discount and save the miles?

    Thank you.

    1. Hi Randy,

February is a relatively expensive season albeit it not as high as Christmas so fares may not go lower. We consider miles to be worth 1 cent each, so at 35,000 miles that is good value. However if you have to buy miles, that is different as you will pay significantly more than 1 cent each. The companion fare however seems like a good idea.

      Aloha.

  10. Hi,
I am flying to Hawaii for a friend’s wedding 8/7-8/12. Hawaiian Airlines has their summer fare sale, but the cheapest I can find out of SMF to HNL is $708 a ticket. Do you think this price will go down or should I buy now? I don”t want them to sell out.

    1. Hi Tanya.

There is a slight chance of the price dropping but it is not altogether likely. Therefore, it depends on your threshold for the unknown.

      Aloha.
