  1. Great site!!!

I’d like to take my wife to Hawaii for the first time. I have been a couple times but it’s been 15 years (Maui and Kauai).

If I want to schedule a trip in the next 6-8 months (now through April 2017) when would be the best time to go (taking into consideration weather and flight tickets)? Some people are recommending after Thanksgiving/beginning of December. Thoughts?

What airline would you recommend and what price should I be looking for?

FYI – I will be traveling from SLC, Utah.

We are active and like hiking, etc. Which islands are lush, and have really fun/beautiful hiking trails to lakes, rivers or pools, etc. Which have the best beaches?

    Any info would help!

Thanks again for the wonderful content and website.

    Jason

    1. Hi Jason.

Thank you! On airfares, we see lots of availability this fall at about $450 across multiple carriers. Doesn’t matter which you fly, so long as you avoid long layovers. And just stay away from holidays. Early December isn’t as cheap as September through November right now, but it could come down later. As for personal opinion, we’d suggest September through early November. More reliable weather than December and warmer evenings. Perfect time to visit. Not sure which island you’re thinking of but suggest you head to the Hawaii Revealed guidebooks for guidance. You can easily find what you’re looking for on the Big Island, Maui and Kauai. If you want to really go off-grid, beautiful and remote Molokai also comes to mind.

      Aloha.

  2. Hello, we are planning a trip for 2 from Seattle to Maui October 19th through 26th. R/T Flights right now is $998. Is that a fair deal or should we wait to puchase a little later in August or September? Thank you. 😀

    1. Hi Joan,

Seems like it will come down somewhat to lower in $400’s per person if you wait. That’s what we’d suggest.

      Aloha.

  3. my husband and I are seriously planning a trip from Toronto to Hawaii in March. we are 6 people. 2 children 9 and 11 boys. one likes nature the other one sports. my son in law loves sailing. love to give him one opportunity to do that. I know that we cannot see everything but just get a wonderful holiday in Hawaii. aloha

    1. Hi Berta,

Lots of fares at about $500 RT early in March to Honolulu. Great price with quick connection.

      Aloha.

  4. Hello,

I will be traveling with my family (3 adults 3 kids) 6/11-6/22/17 to Lihue. When would be a good time to start booking, especially for airfare deals. Right now it looks to be about 900.00 a person roundtrip give or take. I have an option to fly out of San Diego or Los Angeles.

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Norma,

That is running between $750 and $800. Alaska nonstop from San Diego is cheapest and from LA on Hawaiian is the higher amount. Fair price for those dates and suggest buying now.

      Aloha.

  5. Hi, We are traveling to Maui 4/19/2017. When would be a good time to start shopping for airfare deals. There will be a group of (8). This timeframe is right after spring break, what prices should I expect to pay? Thank you.

    1. Hi Georgia.

About $450 to $475 is the target. We’ll post spring airfares as soon as they are available. Maybe this fall. Definitely no rush to book.

      Aloha.

  6. Hi There,

I would appreciate your feedback. Flights recently dropped to $818 round trip from DTW to Maui, short connection in Seattle, 2/25 – 3/2 2017. Is this a fair price or should I expect to pay less?

    Aloha!

    1. Hi Mac.

Yes that is a fair price given the 12 hour transit time. You can pay up to $200 less but the transit time will be about 30 hours.

      Aloha.

  7. Oahu, Hawaii dates June 8 to June 15, 2017. (Dates flexible) 2 persons. Ambassador Hotel or nearby preferred.
Air & Hotel or Air only. Depart from DFW or LAX.

  8. This site is such an amazing resource, thanks for all the tips I’ve already relied on! A couple of questions about my upcoming trip from October 9-19:

    1) is there much price fluctuation in the small flights between islands, eg. from HNL to LIH ($74), LIH to KOA ($110), or KOA back to HNL ($107)? Are there other ways to get around
    2) Can I expect much decrease in one-way flight from LAX to HNL on Sunday Oct 9, currently at $304?
    3) What about return from HNL to JFK on Wednesday October 19, currently at $390 through LAX or $474 nonstop (thinking might pay a bit more to avoid the stop…)

    Thanks in advance!!

    Brian

    1. Hi Brian.

First thank you! Here are answers to your questions: 1) Very little fluctuation. Also limited availability for best times and for seats, so suggest buying those ASAP. 2 & 3) Hawaiian Air nonstop is $678 routing LAX-HNL-JFK. Excellent price.

      Aloha.

  9. Aloha! Your site is wonderfully run and has been useful in our travels to the islands previously. This year we are taking the littles to Aulani, very excited! Our travel dates from LAX to HNL are Sunday November 13th to Saturday November 19th. What is the most I should expect to pay and the least? I’ve been looking everyday but don’t plan on jumping on anything unless it’s less than 520/person round trip earlier than end of August. Am I wrong to expect most of the deals to start then?

We are flexible if staying an extra night will save enough to cover a night at a hotel closer to Honolulu. Thank you for your time!

    1. Hi Avon.

Thanks for nice words. Competition on that route is okay but not great, even with entry of Virgin America. Also, 13th is fine (though Sundays don’t have best deals), but 20th could be quite problematic as that is a big Thanksgiving travel day. Currently $661 to $704 RT. Unfortunately not sure it will improve for your dates. Other dates in fall could see about $500.

      Aloha.
