  1. Hi, trying again on this one. What would you say is a good price for roundtrip airfare between (1) LAX and KOA, and (2) PDX and KOA, travel dates 8/5/17 and 8/12/17? Our family has a reunion planned on the Big Island, prices seem quite high right now (and not sure if they will come down until we get closer to August) – current range appears to be between over $800 to $1,000+ roundtrip.

Thanks in advance for your always sage advice!

    1. Hi Robert.

If you need to stick with Saturdays, then $850+ for LA and $750+ for Portland. It is the first half of August and that’s what these posts talk about – it is high season. We would not expect the LA fare to go down. Portland is a little less certain due to more competition in that market. If you can chance from Saturdays, you’ll do better.

      Aloha.

  2. Hello, we are looking at flying to Maui on 9/23 and returning on 10/1. Alaska is $578 and Hawaiian is $588. I’m watching fares weekly to see if they come down. When would you book these flights and do you think they will go lower? Let me know, thanks for your advice!

    1. Hi Michelle.

You didn’t say where you’re flying from – but, it doesn’t matter. Too early for fall airfares. They’ll be out in a few months.

      Aloha.

      1. Sorry, it is from Seattle to Maui. So May/June would be a good time to look? What should we expect to pay???

        1. Hi Michele.

Around $450. Can’t say when – that’s up to the airlines and their needs. Perhaps by mid-summer.

          Aloha.

  3. When is the best time to buy tickets to Kona / Maui for Thanksgiving holiday, traveling out of Anchorage? Waiting too long and all flights are sold out, but tickets right now are PRICEY!

    Thank you!

    Peter

    1. Hi Peter.

As described in the post, Thanksgiving isn’t a time to wheel and deal. Suggest buying now.

      Aloha.

  4. Hi,

Just purchased tickets today from Seattle – Lihue, Dec 21 – 31 on Delta, $863 person. Do you think that was a good deal? Wasn’t sure if a deal would come up for those dates and for a direct flight was considerably cheaper than Alaska, the other direct option. Flights are a good time too!

    Kim

    1. Hi Kim.

The price is fair and availability at the holidays is a big issue. Don’t forget to snag a car and accommodations right away of course.

The airfare has been $700+ at the holidays for decades without exception. You’re sure to have a great time!

      Aloha.

  5. Good afternoon,
My wife and I are going on a trip to Hawaii with another couple. I am planning the entire trip and we are wanting to go in late March or early April. Ideally I have been searching a combination of date from 3/22 – 3/31. We are located in North Carolina and are willing to fly out of RDU or CLT, whatever is the most cost effective.

I am also trying to figure out what the best island is for us to stay on or if we should spilt it up and visit multiple islands. The one thing we are certain of, is that we would like to visit O’ahu to at least visit Pearl Harbor. With this being 2 couples, we think it may be cost effective to do a 2-3 bedroom condo, as opposed to the individual cost of 2 resort rooms. Aside from that, we are wide open and I greatly welcome all suggestions.

    1. Hi Adam.

Your dates are somewhat pricey because of spring break. So expect to spend about $850 and RDU is cheaper most but not all days.

Inter-island takes up a minimum of 1/2 day of your vacation and when doing so, suggest you consider returning directly from another island. A resounding yes on a vacation rental. The only way to go!

      Aloha.

  6. Hello,
I am wanting to take my 2 children (16 & 3) to Honolulu to visit their military uncle & aunt. We would be traveling from Orlando FL. What would be the cheapest month to go, as i am pretty open. Also is there a better day of the week to purchase flights or to fly for the best rate. Looking for flight only, no hotel no car

    Thank you in advance

    1. Hi Rosalynn.

About $750 is typically the best price for spring and fall dates with reasonably fast connections. Midweek. Fall prices haven’t gone down yet. The rest of the information is already in the post.

      Aloha.

  7. Good afternoon ! We’re looking for 4 tickets but can’t fly until after may 26….. should I be buying now or waiting for another deal/ fare sale?

Flying to big island from San Jose / Oakland/ San Fran or Sacramento.
    Thank you!!!

    1. Hi Steph.

Especially if you’ll be returning within first week of June then yes do wait.

      Aloha.

  8. Two questions please:

1- I live is SF Bay Area – which is cheapest place to fly out of? SFO, Oakland or Sac. (I think Hawaiian Air has Economy Plus only from OAK)

2- We are going May 27 to June 4. I saw low flights last month and should have booked then but didn’t and now they’re more than doubled. Will they drop at all before May?

    Mahalo, Tess

    1. Hi Tess.

Definitely not Sacramento. Usually Oakland or San Jose are cheapest. And yes, prices should come back down again for your dates.

      Aloha.

  9. Hello, I am looking to book flights from San Francisco or San Jose to Honolulu 12/21/17-12/27/17. I’m not sure what would be a good deal on those flights. Should I be looking to book now or should I hold out? I’ve never booked a flight during Christmas and really don’t have anything to compare it to. Thank you so much for your help and advice!

    1. Hi Erica.

Just over $650 from San Jose and about $50 or so more if you fly from SFO. Reasonable prices for your dates. Suggest buying tomorrow (first date that 12/27 return will be available for purchase).

      Aloha.

  10. Hi there My wife and I are traveling from Michigan to Maui from the 2nd of August and hoping to return on the 6th for a friend’s wedding. Most airports in Michigan are reasonable for travel for us. Could you help with a ballpark airfare for us, or when we should be expecting to book our flights please? Thank you so much in advance.

    Chris

    1. Hi Chris.

Budget $1,100 for your dates. Save about $70 if you return a day later. Price is as expected for that season.

      Aloha.
