  1. Hi Beat of Hawaii,

I am looking to travel around the time period of June 20, 2016 to week of July 4, 2016. I will be departing from San Diego and traveling to Oahu. Does $651.00 sound reasonable, or should I wait it out?

    Thank you,
    Al

    1. If my family of 6 wants to travel to Kona Hawaii on March 19-March 26th 2016 how much am I going to pay per person and how soon should I buy?

      Thank you

  2. Hi, family of 4 flying out of San Diego to HNL Sunday April 24 and returning Thursda April 28. Non stop flights (which i really want) are running around $468 right now. Should I buy now or will that price for a non stop drop? This is our first time flying to HNL.

    Thanks

  3. My wife and I would like to go to either Kona Hi. or Kauai The first part of November. When would be the best time to purchase tickets, now or wait till when? What price difference is there between the flights to these islands?

    1. Hi Tom,

Kona or Kauai will probably be equally priced. Not the time to buy for November, as indicated in post. In honestly, we’ll know when we know. Best to just subscribe to our email updates.

      Aloha.

  4. Hello,

I want to fly to Oahu mid April for a week from SEA and my friend is flying from RDU.

Kayak shows cheapest is around $500 for SEA and RDU is at almost $900. Just wondering if you think this is the lowest it will be? Or should we wait a month to see if these prices drop?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Katherine,

We haven’t seen lowest fares for after spring break so those may very well improve. Those should happen reasonably soon – next 30-60 days.

      Aloha.

  5. Hello, we are going to Kona June 23-28 for the Kona marathon. Right now flights are $1053/person from Albuquerque. Should we look at booking from LA or Oakland and then figure out how to get from Albuquerque to either of those cities? If we wait until March to book will that be bad?

    1. Hi Amanda,

Fares for exact dates start at $965 with two stops and $1030 with great connection and one stop on AA. It probably will not improve but also not get worse if you wait.

      Aloha.

      1. I just checked AA as I have been all day and now the flight from Albuquerque to Kona is $1306/person. Why do they change the rates?

        1. Hi Amanda,

Oh yes, isn’t that fun (not). The airlines typically change rates 2 or more times every day. It does keep us on our toes.

          Aloha.

  6. Family (4 of us) traveling to HNL and onto MKK May 19-29 from SMF. Right now fares about $2700 for multi-city ticket (spending time in HNL before going to MKK). Should I wait a month or so to see if fares drop?

    1. Hi Erin,

$571 SMF-HNL has the potential to come down by about $125 per person. How long to wait is dependent on when the airlines decide to change rates. HNL-MKK probably won’t change at about $140 RT.

      Aloha.

    1. Hi Leilani,

Per post, that is the price to be expected. A bit less from most competitive cities like bay area.

      Aloha.

  7. Hello,

Looking to travel to Waikoloa April 20-29th from Houston. I cannot find any flights under 10 hours, $806 RT and nothing direct. Any suggestions or is this the best I should expect?

    Thanks!!

    1. Hi Kim,

Suggest waiting. Having said that, pricing today starts at $785 on specific dates, or $675 if you leave and return a day earlier. Fastest routing costs more (a relatively new invention from the airlines). So with only one stop in LA and 10 total hours, $903.

      Aloha.

  8. Aloha!

Fantastic guide full of wonderful information. My family of 4 will be returning to the islands for a reunion late May but won’t be flying back until late June. I understand the return is in high season and we’re pretty much out of luck there. To date however, we are only finding flights $880+ with horrific layovers (over 7hrs some up to 15). We will be flying from Central Florida and I was wondering if we can expect more flights to become available this spring, reducing the layovers and cost, or if we should be happy with what we can find now and make the best of it?

    Mahalo nui loa!

    Damian

    1. Hi Damian,

Yes the $868 fare on Alaska has an overnight layover which is grueling. Most direct is United (12 elapsed hours total) for $1,048. If you wait a month or two it could get a little better inasmuch as the outbound may be cheaper. No guarantee, just a gut feeling.

      Aloha.

  9. Hello,

My fiancé and I will be honeymooning in Maui and Kauai from June 5th-18th. Departure city is Springfield, Kansas City, or Tulsa flying to Kauai, Kauai to Maui, Maui to Springfield on the 18th. Tickets are around 1550 currently. Should I book tickets or wait ? Is there a risk of prices rising ?

    Thanks!

    Darren

    1. Hi Darren,

We found prices starting at about $1,300 and up. Depending largely on layover time. It doesn’t seem prices can go up from that. However availability on the return might be problematic. Tough one to call unfortunately.

      Aloha.

  10. Hoping to visit Hawaii in July. Four adults, flying from West coast to Hawaii and boarding cruise ship. I’ve read a lot on less expensive times to fly. But have conflicting data on July. Any advice?

      1. Hi Nancy,

The weather is almost always great in Hawaii. That is among our greatest attractions. July is no exception.

        Aloha.

  11. Hi my husband and I and 8 other family members from Canada are planning a trip to HNL July 22 to July 29. We are flying in from Houston and my family are flying from different city in Canada, Vancouver and Calgary. Per your suggestion on purchase timing my husband and I should purchase our tickets now which is $1117/person with United. Does that sounds right or should I wait? Also for my family in Canada, it’s around $500 currently. Should they wait or purchase now? Thanks in advance for your advice.

    1. Hi Ronnie,

Yes $1,118 on the nonstop sounds about right unfortunately. Not sure it will improve as it is the expected price. If it improves, it might only be at the very last minute. Probably best to purchase all tickets now.

      Aloha.

  12. $488 rt from sjc to hnl for travel May 15 – May 21. Hawaiian airlines. Should I get or wait? Any chance it will down? Thanks! Have a great day!
    Best,
    Amy

  13. I’m planning on flying to Maui from Phoenix on May 29 or 30 for 7 days. My travel dates are flexible after May 29. When should I book and through whom?

    Thanks!

  14. Hi there,
I’m planning a trip for 2 to Honolulu from Los Angeles May 31st to June 5th and the airfare is quite a bit higher than I expected. Is it possible the fares will fall? This is my first time traveling to Hawaii and I wasn’t sure what to expect.

  15. Hello… looking to travel to maui on June 10th thru 24th out of chattanooga or nearby airports. Need 3 tickets and can leave the day before or stay over. Which airlines should i be watching and whats a good price? Can also fly out of atlanta or nashville if necessary.

    1. Hi Charlene.

Chattanooga $1333, Atlanta, $1159, Nashville $1153. Atlanta June 9 to 23 is $990 on Alaska Airlines, but has a very long layover. That is peak summer travel. It might come down some if you wait. Probably won’t get worse.

      Aloha.

      Aloha.

  16. Going to Maui from Spokane on April 30. Watching prices but now wondering with lower gas what amount should we expect to pay? And when to book? Using Alaska air.
    Thank you

    1. Hi Deb,

Prices have nothing to do with fuel prices at this point. It is just a supply and demand driven market. Price is $570 on weekends and about $50 less on weekdays. Not bad. Might or might not improve. Potential savings is $130 per person should it happen. Safe to wait.

      Aloha.

  17. My mom, sister and I are looking to go to Hawaii for a conference May 29-June 2. Dates traveling there and back are flexible as we want to visit my cousin so we are thinking of going between May 26-June 3. Flying from Des Moines, Iowa and Rochester, NY (or potentially Buffalo). I’m finding tickets are between $800-$950 for DSM and $1,100 for Rochester. Is it better to wait until February to find the best deals?

    1. Hi Jo,

Right now from Des Moines to Honolulu for your dates it’s over $800. There’s the possibility of about $100 drop if you wait a while. Also Buffalo is generally quite a bit less than Rochester.

      Aloha.

  18. You guys have a great website for information; thanks so much! Question, our family of 4 plans to go to Maui (leaving from Seattle) around August 8th. I would like to go through Alaska Airlines to utilize my miles and companion fare discount. Currently, the fares are coming in around $812 per person. Do you anticipate fares going any lower or should we be purchasing tickets now?

    1. Hi Julie,

That is a very competitive route so that’s good news. Unfortunately August 8 is still high season. If those dates are fixed, prices might not improve. If you can go a week later, you’ll do much better.

      Aloha.

  19. We are considering spending our 15th anniversary in Hawaii. Anniversary is in December 2016. Would like to go as close to that as possible. When’s the cheapest time to fly and how early would we be able to book it?

    1. Hi Jake,

All that we can suggest is already in the post in terms of then deals might come out and the best travel dates.

      Aloha.

  20. Found tix for my husband and I from Chicago to Hawaii (main) for about $903 roundtrip non-stop. Is that about right. We will be going April 15-April 22?
    thanks

    1. Hi J.

If you’re talking about Honolulu, flights are from $719 for your exact dates. If you vary by a day or so either way, you can get down to the $600’s.

      Aloha.

  21. Hello and happy new year!

My fiancée and I considering getting married in Hawaii. We’d be traveling from Vancouver, BC. The time slot would be mid-late August. We are looking for a very small and private wedding with family only. What island/place do you recommend and what would be the cost (approximately) for airfare?

    Thank you

    1. Hi Stacey,

Any island would be great for a Hawaii wedding so suggest you do research. You might start with what we use, Hawaii Revealed..

Vancouver airfares have been very competitive recently. If that remains the case in August, prices could be back in the $300’s.

      Aloha.

  22. We are going to a wedding Aug. 6th 2016 to Maui. Flights are running $727.00 from Las Vegas and from Lax nonstop $764.00. Should we book now or wait for lower airfare.
Or will prices go up? Approx. dates Aug 4th thru Aug 11th. Please help This is for 2 of our family members.

    Thank you

    1. Hi Sherry,

That’s towards the end of the high summer season. So prices and availability will “probably” remain the same. It isn’t likely that they will go down and if they did it would only be at the very last minute.

      Aloha.

  23. We are planning a trip from LAX to OGG for June 5th-12th – when would be the cheapest time to buy tickets? Thanks!

    1. Hi Matt and Jessy,

Return is in very high season so price will never come down. Departure probably will if you wait. Tough call given your dates. $717.

      Aloha.

  24. My family is planning on a trip to Maui the week of August 8, 2016. Is it too soon to book the trip, or should I wait to see if prices will go down?

    1. Hi Letty,

As you can see your departure is in high season and prices will not go down. Depending on your return date that leg could be less if you wait. Gut call is to wait until spring to summer when we see late summer prices come out.

      Aloha.

  25. Family of 5 traveling from Salt Lake City to Maui in mid July We got tickets in December for $517 on United. (Yea–lousy flight but I was happy with the price.) Now we are trying to find tickets for 2 family members from St. Louis, to Maui, same dates. They are not yet sure of the exact date they can travel so we can’t book quite yet. Better to have them fly St Louis to Maui (with a couple of stops) or St. Louis to SLC for a day, then to Maui and back to SLC and to St Louis? (Two separate flights?)

    1. Hi Diana,

Separate flights unless there is true stopover have issues like inability to inter-line baggage which can result in a second trip through security. Also what if the first flight is late? $1,000 from STL to OGG.

      Aloha.

  26. Hi,
    Awesome blog.
My new bride and I planning on coming to Hawaii for our Honeymoon next month Mid Feb. We have yet to book anything and are a little scared by how expensive we’re seeing everything. What are the best tips for keeping costs down as far as accomodation, car rentals (we want the freedom to explore) and hopefully getting to Maui, Kauai, The Big Island.
    Thanks!

    1. Hi Ryan,

Hawaii (and frankly any good destination) isn’t a bargain in 2016 the way it was a number of years ago. Having said that you can do it economically if you plan carefully. Vacation rentals are always a good idea, or hotels with kitchens since that really helps with food costs. Car rentals should be somewhat reasonable in mid February so just search around. As for where to go, we use and suggest Hawaii Revealed.

      Aloha.

  27. Hi,

Our family (4) is flying from Portland, OR, to Lihue, Kauai, last week of September, 2016, and returning early October. Should we book now, or, is it best to wait until we get closer to our departure date (i.e., book our flight after labor day)? Thanks!

    1. Hi Lon,

Best to wait, per post. Can’t say labor day is the time, we won’t know until it happens. If you’d like our help, please get our free email updates and we’ll let you know as soon as anything is released.

      Aloha.

  28. Your site and blog are so helpful – we greatly appreciate your time and effort!

Reading through some posts, I’m correct in expecting another drop like the current one to the mid $650 range for travel from New York to Oahu in early May ?

    Thanks again!

    1. Thanks so much for the nice words Beth. Much appreciated.

Yes NYC remains very competitive so it is likely and is worth waiting for.

      Aloha.

  29. My fiancee and I are planning on honeymooning in Hawaii and would like to know what you suggest for a destination. Also, what are the rates looking like from Detroit in March?

    1. Hi Ryan,

Any place in Hawaii is great for a honeymoon. For destination planning we use and suggest the excellent Hawaii guidebooks from Hawaii Revealed.

There are some $568 mid-March round trips available today on Alaska Airlines. If you’re ready that’s a great price!

      Aloha.

  30. Planning to take a trip with my boyfriend late May this year to Hawaii. From San antonio, Texas where can I find the best (and cheapest) deal?!

    Thanks!
-Sincerely, a nursing student that needs to save!

    1. Hi Amanda,

Early may is in low $600’s but late may about $700. Might improve if you wait. Per details in post. It isn’t a matter of where to buy but rather it is all about timing and location. Suggest buying from airline website when you find the deal you want.

      Aloha.

  31. My husband and I will be going from Kansas City to Oahu over Thanksgiving to see my son and the Golden Regiment Marching Band (Blue Springs HS) perform. We are looking at Nov 22 or 23, returning on the 26th or 27th. What fare is fair (sorry :)0 and when is the best time to book this? Thanks!

    1. Hi Ellen,

Nearly $1,200 with reasonable connection (11 hrs) or $937 with 20 hours time. Might not improve if you wait. On other hand it probably won’t get worse.

      Aloha.

  32. We are planning a trip to Kona Hi 10/21/16 to 10/28/16 and am wondering when the best time to buy tickets would be. We would be leaving from Minneapolis, MN.

  33. I am planning a trip to the Big Island in spring of 2017. We currently have dates of April 4 to 11. Are you able to tell now if those dates fall into “Spring Break” time and therefore higher priced airfares? With Easter being April 16, 2017 I’m afraid to push it out a week but earlier seems risky as well. Thanks!

    1. Hi Peggy,

Sorry but it isn’t clear quite yet when spring break will happen in 2017. Easter is in mid-April but schools are publishing vacations in mid-March. Check back again. We should know in a few months.

      Aloha.

      1. In your experience, is it better to avoid flying close to Easter in terms of fares? Ie would it be safer to fly/book after mid-April in 2017 or it might not matter as much as when Spring Breaks fall?

        Thanks! Your site is amazing.

        1. Hi Peggy,

Thanks for your nice words! It isn’t about Easter, but rather about spring break. Yes plan to fly after mid-April and before mid-June and you’ll be in great shape.

          Aloha.

  34. Hi! My husband and I are visiting Hawaii for the first time mid May 2016. Currently a roundtrip ticket from Austin,TX to the big island is $1050. I’ve seen it come down to $850 a few months ago, should I expect it to drop again or should I book now? Thanks!

      1. I just checked United and I’m seeing $533 one way from Austin to Kona…Sorry am I missing something? Is there a specific website I should be looking at other than the airline’s official website?

Thanks for your help and quick replies!

        1. Sorry, now we’re getting prices from $681RT. Try Expedia or something similar to initially build itinerary. The better the connection the higher the price. At that amount might be worth waiting.

          Aloha

  35. Hello, ready to book a flight to Maui from Boston mid May (19th/20th?) for two adults to Maui (OGG). Seeing flights from lower $800 for 13hr-14 hr flight times. A few lower but that’s jumping up to 20 hour flight times…

Book now? Wait – or flip a coin?

    1. Hi Karyn,

Yes that’s one of the games in air travel. For the best price it gets very painful time-wise. On a 13 hour total elapsed time itinerary we’re finding $727 as of today on United Airlines which is reasonable. Could improve if you wait but that’s no guarantee.

      Aloha.

  36. Planning a trip to visit family in July during week of the 4th on Oahu, flying from the east coast. When is the best time to buy tickets for this time frame?

    1. Hi Danielle,

Best time is now. That is one of the most expensive weeks for airfare, accommodations and car rentals. Don’t wait.

      Aloha.

  37. Can you please let me know what you feel the best airline would be to fly to Maui from Orlando, FL and when to book to get the best rates? We will be taking our honeymoon in late November 2016 (week of Thanksgiving). Any tips would be helpful – this is my first time taking a trip of this caliber.

    1. The best airline is subjective. UA and AA have equally good connections (under 13 hours) at about $1,100. If you want to spend 16 hours, the price drops by about $100.

Thanksgiving is very high season and should be booked now.

      Aloha.

  38. hi, i am looking to travel to honolulu in feb from los angeles, what is usually a good price for travelling. is $398 a good deal?

  39. Hi,

I am looking for flights for Oahu around late April (22/23). I’m currently seeing RT prices for $398 from westcoast (sfo). Do you think these prices will decrease as the date gets closer? Thanks!
