  1. Look for cancellation holidays. Some package holiday companies sell off last minute trips for a huge discount when their customers can no longer travel.

  2. We have a family of 6 wanting to travel from Kansas City to Maui over christmas break this coming year. We are looking at Dec 26-January 3rd. We are wanting to fly first class and wanted to know if you have any airline recommendations to keep RT prices no more than $2000 per person.

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Ross,

No special suggestions. It is too early to see what the airlines will be pricing that at. Earlier in December is about $1700+.

      Aloha.

      1. Thank you! Do you think we should jump on tickets as soon as the airline calendars open up? Or would we best be to wait a couple of months? I just don’t want to miss out on seat availability, but prices are crazy!

        1. Hi Ross.

Most welcome. Yes those are crazy prices, but it isn’t at all clear that they will ever improve. If your dates and set and you’re ready to book, it would be best to get them as soon as possible.

          Aloha.

  3. Hello,

Our family is planning to go to Oahu for Christmas 2016. Flying from either San Francisco/Oakland/Sacramento area to Honolulu leaving Dec 17th & returning Dec 27th. Dates may be flexible within a day or two. Should we book right when the flights become available or wait a while considering it’s peak season? Not sure if prices would fluctuate that much vs. waiting?

    1. Hi Natalie,

It is generally best to buy as soon as they become available for the holidays. Oakland will probably be lowest price but SFO might work too with the additional competition.

      Aloha.

  4. Me, my wife, and 2 kids will be traveling from San Diego to Maui from 6/4/16 through 6/11/16. HA is approximately $900 each round trip. Will prices go down any before then?

  5. We looking to travel from Portland Oregon 3 of us to Kauai in November around the 2nd week in November staying for 7 nights when the cheapest time to buy our plan tickets
    Jennifer

  6. Hello! My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Maui in January 2017 (14th to 21st). The tickets look so expensive! Can we expect a decrease in price? When would be the best time to buy? Thank you!

    1. Hi Victoria,

The time to look for those tickets is probably not until the fall. Prices may well come down. Airlines only sell tickets within next 330 days.

      Aloha.

  7. we would like to fly from the Bay Area to Maui around the middle to late June – Round Trip. Fares seem kind of high right now….$700 RT is best I have seen. We flew last year on Alaska for about $350 RT and we booked them around now…do you think the carriers will have better pricing in the next 30 days or so?

  8. Looking to fly Salt Lake City to Maui in September over Labor Day Weekend. Hacker flights for $530 (but it takes all day to get to Maui) or $586 to get to Maui by 10:25 AM. Should we plan to buy tickets sooner or later?

  9. Husband and I traveling from CLE to OGG – May 30th through June 9th .. prices are approx $1100 r/t. I realize that the Midwest does not get any deals .. but should we buy now or wait. Thank you ..

  10. Hello!

I’m planning my honeymoon from 9/28-10/8 flying from the east coast to maui. We wanted to fly first class and I wasn’t sure when was the best time to book to get the best price? Should we start looking now?

    Thank You!

    1. Hi Sheila,

It’s running about $1700 (NYC-HNL) with one stop or double that for either the UA or HA nonstop. We don’t follow first very closely, and we’re not sure if it will improve or not.

      Aloha.

  11. We are planning a trip to Maui April 23 for a week and have been watching airfare prices from the Milwaukee/Chicago areas (with not much change). How much of a window do we have before prices start to increase? Really appreciate your input as we don’t want to cut it too close. Thanks!

    1. Hi Kathy,

Those should be increasing but rather decreasing as you wait. It is just too soon. Has the potential to come down by as much as $200.

      Aloha.

  12. we are looking to go for thanksgiving week 2016, I know not the cheapest week, but with kids weeks are limited. fares are really high right now for that week, do you think they will lower as we get closer?

  13. Are there ever any good travel deals from Salt Lake City International to Honolulu? I want to fly my son, his wife, their 4 year old and a baby to Oahu.

    1. Hi Susan,

Many dates through February are about $500. There are occasional sales but it doesn’t get a lot cheaper than that from SLC.

      Aloha.

  14. Best time to purchase flight from OAK or ONT to HNL (but are flexible with any flight out of California). We prefer Hawaiian Airlines. Currently about $646 RT. Thank you!

  15. Hello,
My fiancé and I are planning our honeymoon. Trying to go after our wedding early June. However all flights I have found round trip for both of us have been about $1300. We’re flying from the Bay Area to Honolulu. Do you suggest waiting or choosin a difference destination in Hawaii??

    1. Hi Mary,

As we’ve said repeatedly it is too early for spring. Also you’ll need to conclude trip by first week of June to stay in low season. Subscribe to our email updates and we’ll let you know asap.

  16. Hi There

Planning a trip to Kahului(OGG) and Oahu(HNL) with my family of 5 all adults May 22 to May 29 in Kahului then May 29-June 2 in Oahu. Three of us will be traveling from New Jersey and 2 will be traveling from Phoenix. Would is be wise for three of us from NJ to fly to Phoenix (PHX) then on to to Kahului(OGG) or HNL ? Or direct flight from New Jersey? Also should I buy airfare now or will airfare drop for may22-June2 . Any suggestions hotels for a family of 5? In Kahului and Wakiki. Booking 2 rooms can be very expensive.

    1. Hi Maryann,

Intermediate stops can to be problematic when you aren’t really having a stopover unless you stay with the same airline. Otherwise, it is a matter of personal preference. We prefer the JFK nonstop but other people prefer to get off the plane half way.

Fares should come down for your travel dates at some point in the next month to two.

      Aloha.

  17. What the best airline to fly out of Boston,Mass to Hawaii the big main island? I don’t have any dates except to go when it is the cheapest. I be bringing 3 adults plus me and a kid under 5. Are there any good vacation packages suggestions u have with hotels etc?

    1. Hi Andrew,

From checking, it appears the fastest connections are on American. Vacation packages vs. purchasing flights, air and car rental separately is largely personal preference. Suggest you price it both ways.

The cheapest dates are already in the post as well as how early we expect to see such fares released.

      Aloha.

  18. My family of 4 are looking to travel to Hawaii some time in Mid to late July of 2016. We plan on going to Maui or Kauai for about a week, then fly to Oahu for about 3 days and then fly back to Nashville. The best rate (with decent flight durations & times) including taxes and fees I have found at this time for flights to Maui, then to Oahu and then back to Nashville is about $1,350. Does this sound about right and should I go ahead and book these now?

    1. Hi Rad,

Unfortunately given inter-island flight costs and month you’re travelling that does sound about right. Some days vary by about $100 more or less so do play around with that using a flexible date search.

Also would be good to get the inter-island fights locked down since availability for most convenient times becomes an issue.

      Aloha.

  19. Looking for best deal out of Spokane wa 2 people, not sure where to go. Been to Maui and Waikiki

Loved Maui prob Alaska have companion ticket

    1. Hi Sally.

There are some mid-$400’s to low $500’s fares this month and next on Alaska to all the islands. After that you either have to wait for future deals or the prices are dramatically higher.

      Aloha.

  20. Hello. My wife and I are trying to find tickets to Maui for the last week of May from Washington DC but are not sure if the rates we are finding at this time are fair. For RT, I’m finding them to be ~$1,000/person. Am I looking too early or does this seem to be the going rate for our situation? Thanks!

    1. Hi Jay,

Has good potential to come down to perhaps $700’s if you can wait. Spring deals will be out reasonably soon.

      Aloha.

  21. Hi! We are planning to visit Maui for our honeymoon on August 1-8, 2016. Right now roundtrip from San Jose for each person is about $600+. Is this an average price? When would be the best time to purchase?

Also, are packages always a cheaper way to go? Or just purchase separately. We need flight, hotel, and car. Thank you!

    1. Hi Stephanie,

That’s a good price for summer. Best to buy now.

Suggest you try pricing it both ways – package and separately. It will probably work out about the same.

      Aloha.

  22. My husband and I are sending his parents to Maui for their 30th wedding anniversary. They would be traveling July 11-15, 2016 out of Indianapolis. When do you suggest to buy tickets and how much should we expect to spend? Right now airfare prices are around $1,200 per person. Is that a normal price flying from the Midwest?

    Thanks,
    Heather

    1. Hi Heather,

It isn’t likely that fares will go down but they probably won’t go up. If dates are set perhaps best to book now. Nearby airports weren’t priced any better. Those are just very expensive dates. In the off season prices can be up to $500 less.

      Aloha.

  23. Our family of 5 will be traveling to Oahu from Phoenix June 19-27. Right now Hawaiian Airlines roundtrip is $732 per person. Can we expect that this price will go down at all? Or should we go ahead and book?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Emily,

Probably best to book now for those peak season dates as it is not at all likely that fares will decrease.

      Aloha.

  24. We are flying to Oahu 7/23-8/2/16. Flights are really expensive right now. When should i buy? What can i expect to pay? Thanks!

    1. Hi Tom,

You didn’t say where you are flying from but your IP address says you’re in New York. Fares are about $1,000 for nonstops which is what is to be expected for your dates. That is peak summer season.

      Aloha.

  25. Our son is enlisted in the USMC and we are palnning a trip for later this year to visit. I have a question..1 when would be a good time to purchase from say Atlanta (it is significantly cheaper)

    1. Hi Misty,

Are you thinking this fall? Mid-August and beyond is a perfect time. Some dates are already in $775 range with long layovers or around $1,000 for nonstop. Infrequent discounting on nonstop unfortunately.

      Aloha.

  26. Hi,

We are thinking of traveling to Maui from SMF Nov 18-26, 2016. What price should I budget for airfare for a family of 4? We will be traveling on Alaska Airlines due to the non-stop flight availability.

    Thank you

    1. Hi Alicia,

$1,190 per person. Thanksgiving break is very expensive. Should be booked now or if there is any availability (not likely) at the very last minute.

      Aloha.

  27. Hi,
We are planning a family vacation from San Jose to Honolulu June 22, 2016 – June 28,2016. Right now the tickets are over $600. Is that the normal price or will the prices go down ?

    Thanks,

    1. Ho Joanne,

Starting at $626 today. Good price actually for summer because SJC is most competitive. Buy now or wait until last minute if there is any availability. Price may well go up.

      Aloha.

  28. Hello there,
I Am trying to buy tickets for about 10 people traveling to Oahu from NYC from March 3 to 12. It’s about 800 right now. Do you think it will go down? And do you know if there are deals since we are purchasing so many tickets, please help thank you!

  29. Hi, I’m planning a trip to Maui 5/13 – 5/23. I have reserved the hotel, but not purchased airfare because it’s almost $700 a person for 3 of us. I read here to wait for the spring sale, but when do you think the spring airfare would be released? I like to plan ahead and I’m nervous about waiting and then not be able to book travel.
    Thank you!

    Aloha,

    Lilly

    1. Hi Lilly,

Those dates will without doubt see price reductions from many if not most west coast locations. Looks like you’re traveling from Los Angeles and LA isn’t as certain as for example San Diego. No one knows how long exactly – that is up to the airlines and their need for price reductions in order to fill seats. Best guess would be in the next 6 weeks.

      Aloha.

  30. Hi, my husband and I are planning a trip to Maui the 22nd of may to the 30th with a couple friends. What’s the cheapest we can expect to find leaving from Las Vegas to OGG? right now they’re between $650 and $720 RT/person. I’ve been reading all the comments and just looking for a little more info, thanks!

  31. Hello,
We will be traveling to Maui from Los Angeles on September 2 (or 1st if we can get cheaper tickets), 2016 thru September 9, 2016. When would be best the time book our plane tickets (for the cheapest possible per ticket)?

  32. Hi there! We’re wanting to fly from BOI around Oct 25-Nov 2 to OGG. We noticed airfare right now on Alaska is about $676..Should we book now?
    Thank you, Sharon

    1. Hi Sharon,

By waiting (and no one knows precisely how long) there is potential to save up to $175/per person.

      Aloha.

  33. Hello, Been reaching on when, where and how much we are needing for our trip to Ouha it’s our 30th wedding anniversary and we’ve never been. We have not had a (real honeymoon) So anything great tips would be greatly appreciated.

    Aloha Maureen

  34. Hello,

Thanks for a helpful website about Hawaii!

Question: Should I buy airfare now or wait until later in spring? We are traveling Aug. 19-29 from Portland, Ore to Lihue, Kauai. We will fly Alaska Airlines as we have a $121 companion ticket. Will fares for 1 person drop below the listed price of $542? Your thoughts are much appreciated!

    1. Hi Alison,

The “potential” savings by waiting is about $75 if that is worth it. And you don’t know how long you’ll have to wait or even if it will materialize. That’s why we say the best deal may not be the rock bottom price. As of today the airfare is $559 on Hawaiian.

      Aloha.

  35. we flying from Southern California to Lihue on Nov 19th 2016 and returning Nov 26th. I know this is busy and expensive thanksgiving week. When is the best time to buy 4 tickets?

    1. Hi Elliott,

About $1,100 right now. Keep watching. Better target price would be $800’s. Not sure if it will happen or when. You have the absolutely worst dates price-wise. Other dates nearby are in the $600’s (11/17-11/24).

      Aloha.

  36. Hi there, my family of 6 will be vacationing in Oahu from June 6-13 (only 5 seats needed as our youngest is an infant sitting on my lap). When is the best time to buy our flights, and which airline do you recommend? We can fly out of Oakland or SF, whichever is cheapest. Thanks!

  37. Aloha! Planning to fly from LAX-HNL 10/19/16. Prices are currently $600-$700 round trip. Is this about right for the season? Mahalo!

  38. My family of 6 is flying to Honolulu from Atlanta. What should I expect a good deal to be? Our travel dates are May 22-31 but can be flexible a day or so either way. And how far out should I expect on booking them? Thanks so much!

    1. Hi Christie,

Right now about $1,000 on the nonstop or a bit better with long connections. Wait a bit for airlines to release better spring airfares since there’s potential for savings of up to $200.

      Aloha.
